College World Series Day 8 Recap

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tyler Campbell’s bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Vanderbilt a 4-3 win over Texas on Saturday night and sent the Commodores to the College World Series finals against Virginia.

Campbell was in his second game filling in for third baseman Xavier Turner, who was ruled ineligible Friday for a violation of NCAA rules. Campbell had only 21 at-bats this season when he stepped to the plate in the 10th. He sent a slow grounder toward shortstop C.J. Hinojosa, who charged the ball, but couldn’t get it to first in time to get Campbell.

Freshman Hayden Stone (3-0) struck out eight in 5 2-3 innings of relief of Carson Fulmer. Vanderbilt (49-20) gives the SEC a team in the CWS finals for the seventh straight year.

John Curtiss (2-3) took the loss for Texas (46-21).

Earlier in the day Robbie Coman’s two-run, bases-loaded single gave Virginia the lead, and Josh Sborz and two relievers limited Mississippi to six singles in a 4-1 victory Saturday that sent the Cavaliers to the College World Series finals.

Virginia (52-14), in the CWS for the third time, will go to the championship round looking for its first national championship in baseball. The Cavaliers will play Vanderbilt in the best-of-three finals, starting Monday night. Vanderbilt beat Texas 2-1 in 10 innings Saturday night.

The Rebels (48-21) lost to Virginia for a second time in the CWS, ending their first trip to Omaha since 1972.

Sborz (6-4) threw 12 pitches on Friday before a heavy thunderstorm forced suspension of the game in the second inning. He was on the mound when play resumed and worked through the fifth inning. Artie Lewicki took over to start the sixth, and closer Nick Howard worked the ninth for his 20th save.

Ramirez Helps Brewers to 9-4 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Aramis Ramirez had three hits, including a solo homer, and Wily Peralta won his fourth straight start as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the error-prone Colorado Rockies 9-4 on Saturday.

Carlos Gomez extended his hitting streak to 17 games to help the Brewers improve to 5-1 on their seven-game trip.

Peralta (8-5) went 7 2-3 solid innings and allowed four runs, three earned. He gave up a two-run single to Justin Morneau in the first and then shut down the league’s best offense until Corey Dickerson’s two-run homer in the sixth.

Christian Friedrich (0-1) lasted six innings and surrendered nine runs, four earned, in his season debut. He was betrayed by his defense as the Rockies committed a season-high four errors.

Friedrich is the 11th starting pitcher the Rockies have used this season.

Mariners Edge Royals 2-1 on Ninth Inning Run

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dustin Ackley drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out ninth inning single as the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Saturday.

Ackley’s single to right on a 2-2 count scored Kyle Seager, who doubled with two outs to start the game-winning rally. Seager moved to third on Stefen Romero’s infield single before Ackley’s hit. Ackley is 5-for-10 off Jason Vargas (7-3), who took the loss.

Yoervis Medina (4-1) worked a flawless eighth, striking out two to pick up the victory. He has not allowed a run and only three hits in his past 10 outings, covering 10 1-3 innings. Fernando Rodney worked the ninth for his 20th save in 22 opportunities, getting Eric Hosmer to ground into a game ending double play.

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies recalled Christian Friedrich from Triple-A Colorado Springs and the left-handed pitcher will make his season debut Saturday against Milwaukee.

The Rockies also selected the contract of reliever Wilton Lopez from the Sky Sox.

To make room for Friedrich and Lopez on the roster, the team optioned utility player Kyle Parker and reliever Chris Martin to Colorado Springs. The Rockies also transferred outfielder Michael Cuddyer to the 60-day disabled list. Cuddyer has been out since early June with a fractured left shoulder.

Friedrich missed most of last season with back inflammation.

The 26-year-old Friedrich was the 25th overall pick of the Rockies in 2008. He was 1-8 with a 7.89 ERA for the Sky Sox this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals put outfielder Nori Aoki on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a left groin strain.

Aoki, who grounded out as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning Friday, is hitting .263 with 14 extra-base hits, in 68 games, while batting leadoff in 64 games.

The Royals purchased the contract of outfielder Justin Maxwell from Triple-A Omaha, where he was hitting .316 with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and 18 RBIs in 25 games.

Maxwell began the season with Kansas City, but was designated for assignment on May 15 with a .138 average. Maxwell started in right field Saturday against the Seattle Mariners.

The Royals transferred left-handed pitcher Bruce Chen, who went on the disabled list May 2 with a bulging disk, to the 60-day disabled list to make space for Maxwell on the 40-man roster.

Segura Homers Twice as Brewers Beat Rockies 13-10

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Jean Segura homered twice and Ryan Braun had three hits in his 1,000th career game, helping the Milwaukee Brewers hold off the Colorado Rockies 13-10 on Friday night.

Khris Davis also homered and Carlos Gomez extended his hitting streak to 16 games as the Brewers scored their most runs of the year and tied a season high with 19 hits.

Marco Estrada (6-4) gave up seven runs and a career-most 10 hits, yet still earned the win thanks to the Brewers’ bats.

In their first game since being no-hit by Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, the Rockies got their league-leading offense back on track with a 16-hit evening, which included homers from Justin Morneau, Corey Dickerson and Brandon Barnes.

Christian Bergman (0-2) was roughed up as he surrendered up seven runs in three innings. The righty departed soon after taking a liner off the left forearm.

Mariners Score 2 in 9th to Beat Royals 7-5

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brad Miller homered off Royals closer Greg Holland to break a ninth-inning tie, and the Seattle Mariners beat Kansas City 7-5 despite blowing an early five-run lead Friday night.

Charlie Furbush (1-4) inherited a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth, but the Mariners reliever calmly retired Mike Moustakas on a lazy popup to shallow right field. Furbush then struck out Alcides Escobar to silence a sellout crowd of 38,475 and keep the game tied 5-all.

Miller’s homer off Holland (0-2) came on the fifth pitch of his at-bat, and just skirted the foul pole in right field. Logan Morrison drove in another run later in the ninth.

Fernando Rodney allowed two singles in the ninth, but the veteran bounced back to retire pinch-hitter Nori Aoki on a groundout and Alex Gordon swinging to earn his 19th save.

College World Series Day 7 Recap

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The College World Series game between Virginia and Mississippi was suspended after a 93-minute lightning and rain delay at TD Ameritrade Park on Friday night.

The game, tied 0-0, will resume Saturday at 3 p.m. EDT with Virginia batting in the top of the second inning. The Cavaliers have runners on first and second base.

Virginia would advance to next week’s best-of-three finals with a win. If Mississippi wins, the teams would play again Sunday.

Texas and Vanderbilt will play a second bracket final on Saturday at 7 p.m. following the Longhorns’ 4-0 win on Friday.

Friday night’s game originally was delayed because of lightning. Heavy rain moved in and forced the suspension of the game. More than an inch of rain fell in a half-hour at TD Ameritrade Park.

Earlier in the day Nathan Thornhill and John Curtiss pitched Texas’ second straight shutout at the College World Series, and the Longhorns forced a second bracket final against Vanderbilt with a 4-0 victory Friday.

The Longhorns (46-20) and Commodores (48-20) will meet again Saturday, with the winner advancing to the best-of-three finals against Virginia or Mississippi. Those teams played a bracket final Friday night.

For the second straight game, Texas pitchers didn’t allow a runner past second base. The Longhorns have held opponents scoreless 19 straight innings and have given up four runs in their four games in Omaha.

Texas scored twice in each of the first two innings to lead 4-0, with a couple of the runs crossing the plate as a result of quirky plays.

Tobacco Use Still High in College Ball, Off Field

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The death of Hall of Fame baseball player Tony Gwynn might give some pause to college players who use chewing tobacco. Whether it makes them stop is another matter.

Virginia pitcher Josh Sborz says he chews tobacco once a month or every two weeks, and he said Gwynn’s death should make players think.

According to an NCAA survey on substance use, baseball players acknowledging they used spit tobacco at least once in the previous month rose from 42.5 percent in 2005 to 52.3 percent in 2009. Results of the 2013 survey have not been released.

The NCAA banned tobacco in 1994, a year after minor-league baseball did the same. Tobacco is not banned in the major leagues.

College players and coaches caught with tobacco during games are to be ejected.

College World Series Day 6 Recap

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Will Allen drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Mississippi relievers held TCU without a hit after Kevin Cron’s homer in the fifth, and the Rebels stayed alive in the College World Series with a 6-4 victory Thursday night.

Ole Miss (48-20) will play Virginia on Friday night in a bracket final. The Rebels would need to beat the Cavaliers (51-14) on Friday and again Saturday to reach next week’s best-of-three championship series.

It was the most runs allowed by TCU (48-18) in 16 games.

Allen, who was 0 for 8 in the CWS when he came to bat in the third inning, went 3 for 5 with three RBIs.

Josh Laxer (3-2) worked 2 2-3 innings of relief for the win, and Aaron Greenwood earned his fifth save. Jordan Kipper (8-3) took the loss.
