‘Field of Dreams’ Hosts 25th Anniversary in Iowa

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa farm where the baseball film “Field of Dreams” was filmed is hosting a 25th anniversary celebration this weekend.

Stars such as Kevin Costner and Timothy Busfield joined thousands of people from all over the Midwest at the remote locale.

Fans were treated to a viewing of the movie in the outfield on Friday night and parents were allowed to play catch with their children in the grass on Saturday.

Costner, who played Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella in the film, says the movie remains a “high mark” in his career.

Rockies Score Twice in Ninth to Stun Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Brandon Barnes hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the ninth inning and the Colorado Rockies rallied for the second straight day to stun the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Saturday.

Charlie Blackmon singled with two outs off Giants closer Sergio Romo (3-3) before Barnes lined a hit to center field. San Francisco’s Angel Pagan misplayed the ball and it skipped to the fence as Blackmon and Barnes raced around the bases.

Barnes, who had a walkoff triple to beat the Dodgers on June 7, had flown out to center in three consecutive at-bats before helping Colorado extend its winning streak to four games.

It’s the second consecutive blown save and fourth this season for Romo, who gave up five runs in the ninth inning of Friday’s 7-4 loss to Colorado.

Duffy Fans 9 as Royals beat White Sox 9-1

CHICAGO (AP) — Danny Duffy matched a career high with nine strikeouts, and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to six with a 9-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

Duffy (4-5) scattered five hits over seven-plus shutout innings for Kansas City.

Mike Moustakas homered among his three hits as the Royals won their second straight in this weekend series.

The Royals scored five times in the fourth — four with none out — to chase Chicago starter Hector Noesi (2-5).

Noesi allowed five runs — two earned — and eight hits while walking one and striking out four.

Duffy last struck out nine on June 19, 2011, at St. Louis. He’s now 2-0 against Chicago.

The left-hander was chased in the eighth inning after a leadoff single by Adam Eaton.

White Sox designated hitter Paul Konerko spoiled the shutout with a homer off Michael Mariotoff to open the ninth.

Rockies Score 5 in Ninth to Edge Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — D.J. LeMahieu hit a tiebreaking single in a five-run ninth inning, lifting the Colorado Rockies to a 7-4 win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night.

The Rockies were listless at the plate for most of the night, trailed 4-2 and had gone five straight innings without a hit before rallying off Giants closer Sergio Romo, who went into the night tied for most saves in the majors.

Troy Tulowitzki opened the ninth with a single off Romo (3-2) but was replaced by pinch-runner Charlie Culberson after injuring his foot reaching first base. After Justin Morneau singled, Romo retired Wilin Rosario on a fly to center field. He then intentionally walked Corey Dickerson to load the bases.

Pinch-hitter Ryan Wheeler hit a two-run single before LeMahieu’s soft single to center drove in Dickerson.

The First Nationals Win Third Straight in Colorado

The North Platte First Nationals beat Longmont, Colo. 12-9 in a Canon City, Colo. tournament on Friday.

The high scoring game featured 21 runs between the two teams but only 16 hits and North Platte was only responsible for four of those hits. The First Nationals (13-10) took the early lead by scoring four runs in the second inning before Longmont scored six runs in the top of the fourth to go up 6-4. North Platte responded by regaining the lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning with four runs to go up 8-6. The First Nationals added three more runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth to secure the 12-9 win.

Luke Volz led the way for North Platte with two of the team’s four hits, including a triple. He also scored two runs in the game. Alec Wesslund went 0-3 at the plate but still managed to get three RBI. Riley Vierya didn’t have an official at bat after drawing three walks, scoring three times and getting an RBI. The First Nationals drew 10 walks as a team.

Volz started on the mound and pitched the first four innings for North Platte. He gave up six runs, three earned, on nine hits. Jack Kenny came in for the final three innings and gave up three unearned runs on three hits while striking out four batters.

The two teams also combined to commit eight errors in the game.

The First Nationals have Saturday off during the tournament before returning to the diamond Sunday in Canon City. It is yet to be determined who or when North Platte will play to finish the tournament.

Guthrie Snaps Winless Streak in Royals’ 7-2 Win

CHICAGO (AP) — Lorenzo Cain had a two-run double to highlight a five-run first inning, Jeremy Guthrie pitched into the sixth inning and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to five games with a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night.

Guthrie (3-6) allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings to snap an 11-game winless streak. Guthrie’s last win was on April 9, against Tampa Bay.

Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler of the White Sox each had two RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the first inning.

Jose Quintana (3-7) never recovered from the slow start, allowing six runs and eight hits in six innings.

Jose Abreu went 1 for 4 with an RBI for the White Sox.

The Royals staked Guthrie to a five-run lead before he took the mound.

The first four batters — Nori Aoki, Omar Infante, Hosmer and Butler — all singled to make it 2-0 and fifth-place hitter Alex Gordon followed with a double to right field to make it 3-0.

After Quintana struck out Salvador Perez for the first out of the game, Cain stroked a double to left to drive in two more and made it 5-0.

The White Sox got a run back in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Abreu. The Royals got it back in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Hosmer.

Chicago loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning as Alexei Ramirez and Dayan Viciedo singled and Alejandro De Aza walked, but the White Sox pushed across just one run — on a walk to Adam Eaton — to make it 6-2.

Guthrie struck out Tyler Flowers with no outs and then struck out Gordon Beckham with one out following the walk to Eaton. Conor Gillaspie then flied out to center to end the inning.

The starters then settled down and neither team scored over the next four innings. Kansas City added a run in the seventh on Hosmer’s run-scoring single to make it 7-2.

NOTES: The White Sox have signed RHP Henry Rodriguez to a minor league contract. Rodriguez, released by Miami earlier this season, has been assigned to Triple-A Charlotte and will begin on the DL. . The last time LHP Chris Sale had a high pitch count he landed on the DL for a month, but manager Robin Ventura had no problems with the Chicago ace throwing 116 on Thursday. “He felt great going there and he didn’t have that inning where he really had to fight through it and battle,” Ventura said. . LHP Danny Duffy (3-5) takes on RHP Hector Noesi (2-4) in the second game of the series Saturday.

Kelly and Sinclair Earn ABCA All-Region Honors

Lincoln – A pair of Nebraska baseball players earned all-region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association on Friday afternoon, as Pat Kelly was a first-team pick at second base and Chance Sinclair was one of three starting pitchers that earned second team honors in the Midwest Region.

Kelly led the Huskers in hits (76), RBIs (55) and home runs (4) as a junior in 2014, while also fielding at a .990 clip. His 55 RBIs were the most by a Husker since 2010 when Adam Bailey drove in 57 runs. A 12^th-round pick by the Minnesota Twins in last week’s MLB First-Year Player Draft, Kelly has declared that he will not return for his senior season at Nebraska.

Kelly became the 22^nd player in school history to notch 200 career hits, and ended his three-year career ranked 20^th in school history with 212 hits. He started the past 135 straight games for the Huskers, including every game of the past two seasons. Defensively, he leaves Nebraska ranked seventh in school history with 468 assists.

Sinclair transferred to Nebraska after spending two seasons at Neosho County CC and was part of NU’s weekend rotation all season in 2014. The Spring Hill, Kan., native led the Huskers with a 9-1 record, while also posting a 2.15 ERA. During Big Ten play, Sinclair was a perfect 6-0 in eight starts with a 2.10 ERA, including a 10-strikeout performance in his final home start of the year against Illinois on May 15. It was the most strikeouts in a conference game by a Husker since Thad Weber sat down 11 against Kansas on March 18, 2008.

Sinclair started Nebraska’s NCAA Tournament opener, its first since 2008, at the Stillwater Regional and had a no hitter through 6.0 innings against Cal State Fullerton.

On the year, Sinclair went 6.0 or more innings in 13 of his 16 starts, including nine outings of at least 7.0 innings or more and a 9.0-inning complete game against Ohio State on April 5. Sinclair’s complete game against Ohio State was one of three by the Husker pitching staff that weekend, as Christian DeLeon and Aaron Bummer also tossed complete games. No other staff in the country threw three 9.0-inning complete games in a weekend series during the 2014 season.

Sinclair also earned third-team All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball and was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection following his first year at Nebraska.

Garrido, Gillespie Will Meet again when CWS Opens

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The College World Series opens on Saturday with Texas playing UC Irvine in the afternoon and Louisville taking on Vanderbilt at night.

The afternoon game matches the 75-year-old Augie Garrido of Texas against 74-year-old Anteaters coach Mike Gillespie.

It’s been an improbable run to the CWS for both. Texas (43-19) went from last place in the Big 12 in 2013 to fifth, beat old rival Texas A&M twice in regionals and swept Houston in super regionals.

UC Irvine (40-23) lost eight of its last nine in the regular season and was one of the final four at-large teams picked for the NCAA tournament. The Anteaters won at No. 1 national seed Oregon State in regionals and knocked off Oklahoma State on the road to reach the CWS.

First Nationals use a Walkoff to Win the First Two in Colorado

The North Platte First Nationals Seniors team won the first two games they played at a tournament in Canon City, Colo. on Thursday.

North Platte (12-10) played Canon City, Colo. to start the tournament and beat them 5-1. The First Nationals wasted no time jumping out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning en route to the win. Jack Kenny led the way at the plate by hitting an RBI triple in the first inning and scoring a run. Kenny’s triple was the only extra-base hit of the game for North Platte. Drew Callaghan and Luke Volz each had two hits in the game. Marcos Silos shut down Canon City from the mound. Silos pitched six innings, giving up just one unearned run on one hit while earning the win.

North Platte’s second game of the day was closer than the first, but still resulted in a First Nationals victory as they beat Carlsbad, N.M. 4-3. Carlsbad jumped on top of North Platte 2-0 after the first inning and led 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. Callaghan reached on an error to begin the bottom of the seventh followed by back-to-back singles by Ty Brockmoller and Silos. Austin Chitty hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one run before Carlsbad got the second out of the inning with a strikeout. Alec Wesslund then hit an RBI double to tie the game before Kenny hit a walkoff single to win it.

Brockmoller earned the win on the mound by pitching a complete game and giving up three runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out four batters.

The First Nationals continue play in the Canon City tournament on Friday. North Platte plays Longmont, Colo. at 5:45 pm then they have an off day Saturday before wrapping up the tournament on Sunday.

Tempers Flare as Rockies Beat Braves 10-3

DENVER (AP) — Corey Dickerson hit Atlanta catcher Gerald Laird with his backswing and tempers quickly flared, setting off a tense sequence and leading to several ejections Thursday as the Colorado Rockies beat the Braves 10-3.

The Rockies led 8-3 in the eighth when Dickerson knocked off Laird’s facemask with his swing — it appeared accidental.

Laird was down for several minutes before walking off the field on his own and being replaced by Evan Gattis.

With his next pitch, Atlanta reliever David Carpenter hit Dickerson in the thigh and was ejected.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss bolted from the dugout and yelled at Carpenter, as well as in the general direction of Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. Weiss was held back by plate umpire Jordan Baker before being ejected.

In the ninth, Rockies reliever Nick Masset hit Gattis in the hip with a pitch. Both Masset and Rockies bench coach Tom Runnells were tossed.
