Royals Awaiting MRI Exam Result on Pitcher Ventura

Yordano Ventura Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals are awaiting MRI exam results on pitching prodigy Yordano Ventura and have learned top prospect Kyle Zimmer will miss additional time with his own injury.

Ventura’s 100 mph fastballs have made him a budding star. He was removed from Monday night’s loss to Houston with discomfort in his right elbow, but the Royals are hopeful that his injury is not to a ligament because it was on the opposite side from where those injuries are typically felt.

Meanwhile, the team said in a statement Tuesday that Zimmer, the fifth overall pick in the 2012 draft, will be kept from even playing catch for at least six weeks because of a strained back muscle.

Zimmer was already getting a slow start to the season because of biceps tendinitis.

Minor Leaguer’s 1st Home Run Caught by Dad

baseballA 22-year-old Houston Astros prospect’s first home run of the season was caught by a familiar fan: his father.

Quad Cities first baseman Conrad Gregor launched a go-ahead, three-run shot in the sixth inning of the Class-A River Bandits’ 5-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa, on Saturday night. A fan beyond the fence in right-center field caught the ball and proudly waved his arms. Turns out it was Gregor’s father, Marty.

The Quad City Times reported that Gregor’s parents made the five-hour drive from Carmel, Indiana, to attend the River Bandits’ weekend series.

“When I got back to the dugout,” Gregor said, “I heard he made a pretty good catch.”

ATLANTA (AP) — Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki says he avoided an injury when he hit his left foot on his backswing late in Colorado’s game against the Braves.

Tulowitzki left the game in the eighth inning. He limped slightly as he walked slowly off the field after a groundout in Sunday’s 7-0 loss to Atlanta. A trainer walked onto the field and accompanied Tulowitzki back to the dugout.

Josh Rutledge replaced Tulowitzki at shortstop.

Tulowitzki’s assurance that he is not hurt was important news for Colorado.

The Rockies lost third baseman Nolan Arenado to a broken left middle finger in Friday’s game. Arenado was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday and Rutledge was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
