Huskers Can’t Make it in Time to Play Creighton

husker baseballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s baseball game against Creighton scheduled for Tuesday night at TD Ameritrade Park has been cancelled because of the Cornhuskers’ travel issues.

Nebraska spokesman Jeremy Foote said the Huskers’ problems started in East Lansing, Mich., on Monday. Their 4-1 win at Michigan State was shortened to seven innings because of delays caused by rain and a shooting near campus. The team’s flight to Chicago was canceled because of inclement weather.

After an overnight bus trip to Joliet, Ill., the Huskers spent a few hours at a hotel. Another bus that was supposed to take the team to Omaha was two hours late, making it impossible for the Huskers to make it to the ballpark on time for the Creighton game.

The Huskers won two previous games against Creighton this season.

Escobar and Giavotella Homer in Royals Win

kc-royalsSEATTLE (AP) — Alcides Escobar hit a grand slam and Johnny Giavotella added a three-run shot to give the Kansas City Royals a comeback 9-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Escobar had provided a 4-0 lead for the Royals in the second with his first career home run off starter Roenis Elias.

But the Mariners rallied behind Dustin Ackley’s two homers and Kyle Seager’s one to take a 7-5 lead in the fifth.

Kansas City took a 9-7 lead in the seventh, scoring four runs off reliever Danny Farquhar (1-1), highlighted by Giavotella’s three-run blast over the left-field wall.

Entering the game, the Royals had hit just 14 home runs, lowest in baseball. But seven of their nine runs scored via the long ball.

Louis Coleman (1-0), who worked a scoreless sixth, earned the victory.

Greg Holland came on in the ninth to pick up his ninth save in 10 opportunities.

Frazier, Bailey Lead Reds to 4-1 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesCINCINNATI (AP) — Aroldis Chapman made his first major league appearance since being hit above the eye by a line drive during spring training, striking out the side in the ninth with his 100 mph fastball to close out the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies 4-1 Sunday.

Todd Frazier hit his second 400-foot home run in three days to back Homer Bailey’s shutdown pitching as Cincinnati won the rubber match of its three-game series with Colorado.

Chapman was greeted by a standing ovation from the crowd of 33,143. He reached 100 mph with his first pitch and topped out at 102 mph in earning the save. Chapman had been out since being hit above the left eye by a line drive during a spring training game on March 19.

Skip Schumaker drove in two runs and the Reds capitalized on two Colorado throwing errors to send the Rockies to their third loss in four games.

Dickerson 2 HRs and 2 Doubles, Rockies Rout Reds

colorado-rockiesCINCINNATI (AP) — Corey Dickerson hit two home runs and two doubles, driving in a career-high four runs Saturday night as the Colorado Rockies routed the Cincinnati Reds 11-2.

Charlie Blackmon, Justin Morneau (mohr-NOH’) and Troy Tulowitzki (too-loh-WIT’-skee) also homered for the Rockies. Nolan Arenado doubled twice, a day after his 28-game hitting streak ended.

The Rockies got 11 extra-base hits, making things easy for Jordan Lyles. He struck out eight in six innings and left with a 10-2 lead.

Alfredo Simon was tagged a season-high eight hits and five runs in three innings.

Votto’s Homer Gives Reds 4-3 Win over Rockies, Arenado’s Hit Streak Ends

colorado-rockiesCINCINNATI (AP) — Joey Votto hit a game-ending solo homer, and the Cincinnati Reds shut down Nolan Arenado in a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.

Votto drove a 3-0 pitch from Boone Logan over the wall in center for his fifth homer. Votto’s fourth career game-ending shot traveled an estimated 437 feet.

Arenado went 0 for 3, snapping his hitting streak at a club-record 28 games, the longest in the majors this season. But Arenado walked and scored on Justin Morneau’s tying double in the ninth, handing Jonathan Broxton his first blown save in six opportunities.

Royals Get 16 Singles in 6-1 Win over Seattle

kc-royalsSEATTLE (AP) — Jason Vargas used his “accelerator” to control the strike zone and it meant his first road victory of the season. It came at a place where he felt like home.

Vargas allowed three hits over seven innings and the Kansas City Royals had 16 hits — all singles — in a 6-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night.

Vargas (3-1), who pitched for the Mariners for four seasons (2009-12), struck out six without a walk. He is 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA in four career starts against his former team. His 2.30 ERA at Safeco Field is tied for the seventh best for a starter in park history

Vargas signed a four-year, free-agent deal with the Royals in November.

“When he’s on his game, like he was tonight, he really works the accelerator really well,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He pushes down with the fastball, backs off with the changeup. Good curveball.

“What pitchers like Vargie do so well is they disrupt the opposition hitters’ timing. He did that extremely well tonight.”

Vargas said controlling the strike zone is always his goal “but the execution is not always the same. … Tonight I was able control counts and able to make pitches down in the strike zone.”

Salvador Perez, Eric Gordon and Eric Hosmer had three hits each for the Royals while Nori Aoki and Lorenzo Cain had two each.

The Mariners have scored just two runs and have 10 hits over the past three games.

Brandon Maurer (1-1) took the loss, allowing 14 hits, six runs — four earned — and did not walk or strike out a batter. The 14 hits Maurer allowed were just one short of the team record set by Greg Hibbard on May 24, 1994.

“This was a weird, weird game,” Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. “Maurer threw the ball extremely well, gave up two hard hits. They were persistent, put the bat on the ball and found some holes.

“It was one of those nights. I didn’t look up to see if it was a full moon or not. It was weird.”

The first hit Vargas allowed came in the third, a one-out single by Mike Zunino. Shortstop Alcides Escobar knocked the hard grounder down but it rolled a few feet away. The other hits were Dustin Ackley’s line single to center in the fifth and Robinson Cano’s ground single to right in the seventh.

“He mixed it up and threw strikes,” Mariners third baseman Will Bloomquist said of Vargas. “I saw a couple changeups and they were kind of Jamie Moyer-like, coming out of the back of his hand and falling off pretty good. He threw the ball well.”

The Royals pieced together rallies off Maurer. Only one run scored on a hit. The rest scored on an error, a sacrifice fly, a double play and two on fielder’s choices.

“We don’t care how we get the runs,” Hosmer said. “Any way we can produce them. That’s what we need to do. As an offense, we just have to bear down and find ways to produce runs.”

Aoki opened the game with a single to right followed by Hosmer’s single to right, with Aoki sprinting to third. Aoki scored on Billy Butler’s bouncer to Bloomquist, who tried to start a double play but threw wildly to second, pulling Cano off the bag.

Initially, the umpires ruled Hosmer safe on an apparent error but Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon challenged the call. After a review, it was ruled that Cano dragged his left toe across the bag while in possession of the ball. Hosmer was ruled out. Perez bounced into a double play to end the inning.

Hosmer’s sacrifice fly in the third put the Royals up 2-0.

Mariners shortstop Brad Miller’s throwing error in the fourth allowed two more runs.

Perez opened with a single followed by a clean bunt single by Gordon. Johnny Giavotella then bounced a potential double-play ball to short but Miller’s flip to second sailed into right field and Perez scored.

Gordon would later score the second run on Cain’s double-play grounder.

Kansas City made it 5-0 in the sixth when Butler scored on Giavotella’s fielder’s choice.

Cain’s one-out single in the eighth scored Perez from second to make it 6-0, ending Maurer’s evening.

The Mariners scored in the eighth off reliever Aaron Crow. Miller drew a one-out walk. Pinch-hitter James Jones then stroked a two-out double into the right-field corner. Miller had stopped at third then trotted home on right-fielder Aoki’s throwing error.

NOTES: Mariners LHP James Paxton, who started the season at 2-0 before suffering a strained lat muscle, threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session before the game. RHP Taijuan Walker (right shoulder impingement) will have his first bullpen session Sunday. There is no timetable for either pitcher. Also, RHP Stephen Pryor, coming off shoulder surgery, is back with Triple-A Tacoma. . Kyle Seager was a late scratch for the Mariners because of flu-like symptoms. Bloomquist replaced him. . The Royals pre-game move to promote Giavotella was necessary because of Omar Infante’s ailing back. Infante missed Thursday’s game and will be rested for the series. Giavotella was hitting .352 for Triple-A Omaha. To make room, the club sent RHP Michael Mariot to Omaha.

Arenado’s 28-Game Hit Streak Breaks Rockies Record

Nolan Arenado Colorado RockiesARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado has broken the team record with a 28-game hitting streak.

Arenado had a two-out single in the third inning Thursday night against the Texas Rangers.

The streak is one game longer than teammate Michael Cuddyer’s 27-gamer last season.

Arenado’s streak is the longest for anyone 23 or younger since Albert Pujols had a 30-game run in 2003 when he was 23.

The streak for Arenado began April 9, a week before his 23rd birthday.

Rangers Rebound for 5-0 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Prince Fielder homered, Matt Harrison earned his first win of the season and the Texas Rangers beat Colorado 5-0 Thursday night after being overwhelmed by the Rockies the previous three games.

Harrison (1-0) and four relievers combined on a five-hitter, the Rangers’ major league-best seventh shutout. Joakim Soria worked a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.

Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado extended his hitting streak to 28 games with a single in the third. That broke the team record he matched Wednesday night.

Colorado was the only National League team without a shutout loss. The Rockies, whose 22 wins are tied for most in the majors, had 50 hits and outscored the Rangers 29-5 the previous three nights — the first two in Denver before the interleague matchup switched to Texas.

Rockies 1B Justin Morneau Out with Stiff Neck

Justin Morneau Colorado Rockies BaseballARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Justin Morneau has been scratched from the Colorado Rockies’ lineup because of a stiff neck.

The first baseman had been set to bat sixth Thursday night against the Texas Rangers. Jordan Pacheco, who was in the original lineup at catcher, played first base instead. Michael McKenry was inserted at catcher.

Morneau was hitting .331 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs.

During the 2011 season, Morneau had operations on his neck, left knee and right foot. He missed the second half of the 2010 season because of a concussion and then had a recurrence during the 2011 season after diving for a ball.

Arenado Record Streak, Rockies Rout Texas 9-2

colorado-rockiesARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nolan Arenado had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 27 games, matching Colorado’s team record, and the Rockies had their third lopsided victory over Texas in as many nights, 9-2 on Wednesday.

Arenado’s two-run double in the first inning put the Rockies ahead to stay and equaled teammate Michael Cuddyer’s record streak from last season.

Carlos Gonzalez homered for Colorado, which has outscored Texas 29-5 in three games this week. The Rockies won 8-2 and 12-1 at home with a combined 34 hits before the teams shifted to Texas for two games.

Every starter had a hit for the Rockies, who finished with 16 and got 12 of them in 3 2-3 innings off Colby Lewis (2-2).

Jorge De La Rosa (4-3) struck out four and walked three. The lefty gave up two runs over six innings.
