Arenado’s 27-Game Hit Streak Ties Rockies’ Record

Nolan Arenado Colorado RockiesARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado has tied the team record with a 27-game hitting streak.

Arenado needed little time to extend his string Wednesday night. He hit a two-run double in the first inning against the Texas Rangers to equal teammate Michael Cuddyer’s 27-game streak from last season.

Arenado’s streak is the longest for anyone 23 years or younger since Albert Pujols had a 30-gamer in 2003 when he was 23.

The streak for Arenado began April 9, a week before his 23rd birthday. According to Elias, his streak is the longest that began when a player was 22 or younger since Benito Santiago’s 34-game hitting streak in 1987, which is still a major league rookie record.

Shields Pitches Royals past Padres 8-0

kc-royalsSAN DIEGO (AP) — James Shields scattered seven hits over seven innings, Eric Hosmer drove in a season-high four runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the San Diego Padres 8-0 Wednesday.

The Royals scored three times in the first and that was plenty for Shields (4-3). He struck out four, walked two and threw 118 pitches.

Two relievers finished for the Royals. The Padres were shut out for a major league-high sixth time this season. San Diego has lost six of eight overall.

Andrew Cashner (2-5) lasted a season-low four innings.

Rockies Beat Rangers 12-1 with Season-High 21 Hits

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Carlos Gonzalez had five of Colorado’s season-high 21 hits and Nolan Arenado made several slick plays at third base on a night he extended his hitting streak to 26 games as the Rockies routed the Texas Rangers 12-1 on Tuesday night.

It’s the third time in Gonzalez’s career he’s had five hits in a game. Arenado waited until his final at-bat in the seventh to extend his streak, lacing an RBI double that hit just inside the left-field line. He’s one away from tying the team record of 27 set by Michael Cuddyer last season.

Juan Nicasio (4-1) got through five innings without his best command, giving up two hits and one run. He also walked a season-high five.

Robbie Ross Jr. (1-2) had a rough outing as he allowed six runs and 12 hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Tulowitzki’s 2 Homers Lead Rockies past Rangers

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki homered twice, Jordan Lyles pitched eight strong innings and the Colorado Rockies beat the Texas Rangers 8-2 on Monday night.

Nolan Arenado also homered to extend his hitting streak to 25 games. It is the longest in the majors this season.

Tulowitzki, who was named the NL Player of the Month for April before the game, had his first multi-homer game of the season and the ninth of his career. He hit a two-run shot off Texas starter Martin Perez in the fifth and hit another two-run homer off reliever Shawn Tolleson to give Colorado a 7-1 lead in the seventh.

It was more than enough for Lyles (4-0), who came within three outs of the second complete game of his career.

kc-royalsSAN DIEGO (AP) — Will Venable hit a two-run single in the 12th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

Denorfia led off the inning with a single off Louis Coleman before Collins came on. After a sacrifice, Alonso reached a bloop double to left to bring up Venable.

Mike Moustakas hit an RBI single in the 12th off Tim Stauffer (1-0) to give the Royals a brief lead.

Jedd Gyorko’s solo homer with one out in the ninth inning off Royals closer Greg Holland tied the game at 4. It was Holland’s first blown save in eight chances.

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have called up right-hander Nick Masset from Triple-A Colorado Springs and sent down infielder Ryan Wheeler.

Masset is available to pitch out of the bullpen in Monday night’s game against the Texas Rangers.

The 31-year-old Masset has not pitched in the major leagues since 2011 when he was with Cincinnati. He has dealt with an injured right shoulder for the past two seasons.

The Rockies signed Masset to a minor league contract on Feb. 1. He made eight scoreless appearances in Triple-A this year.

In 308 career games with Texas, the Chicago White Sox and the Reds, Masset is 16-14 with four saves and a 3.78 ERA.

The Rockies selected Masset’s contract from Triple-A and optioned Wheeler to Colorado Springs.

The team also transferred righty Tyler Chatwood from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL with a strained right elbow.

Gee Guides Mets to 5-1 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Dillon Gee threw six scoreless innings and David Wright had one of New York’s four RBI doubles as the Mets salvaged the final game of their series against Colorado, beating the Rockies 5-1 on Sunday.

Gee (3-1) kept the Rockies off balance to run his scoreless string to a career-best 16 innings. The righty, 13-6 with a 2.66 since last May 30, surrendered six hits and struck out five, helping the Mets avoid being swept for the first time in a four-game series at Coors Field.

Jhoulys Chacin (0-1) was rather rusty his first start this season, lasting five innings and giving up four runs. Chacin spent the first month on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder.

Nolan Arenado ran his hitting streak to 24 games with a double in the fourth, the second-longest hitting streak in Rockies history. Justin Morneau accounted for Colorado’s only run with a ninth-inning homer off Jeurys Familia.

Rockies Recall McKenry, Option Bettis to Minors

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies reliever Chad Bettis has been optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs, and catcher Michael McKenry has been recalled from the minors.

McKenry’s promotion from Colorado Springs coincided catcher Wilin Rosario being unavailable for Saturday’s game against the New York Mets because of the flu.

Earlier this week, the club placed infielder Josh Rutledge on the 15-day disabled list because of the flu and recalled infielder Ryan Wheeler from Colorado Springs.

McKenry, 29, began the season at Colorado Springs, where he was batting .300 with two home runs and 11 RBIs.

Bettis, 24, was optioned to Colorado Springs for the second time this season. In 12 appearances with the Rockies, Bettis is 0-1 with an 8.78 ERA.
