colorado-rockiesPHOENIX (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki homered, had two doubles and drove in three runs to lead the big-hitting Colorado Rockies to an 8-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday night.

Tulowitzki led off the sixth with his sixth homer and Justin Morneau added a two-run shot later in the inning to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Nolan Arenado had one of Colorado’s six doubles to stretch his hitting streak to a baseball-best 18 games and the Rockies had 12 hits overall.

Franklin Morales (3-1) allowed four runs in five innings and LaTroy Hawkins worked a perfect ninth for his eighth straight save.

Gerardo Parra homered, Miguel Montero drove in two runs and Paul Goldschmidt had three hits for Arizona.

The Rockies won their fourth straight series after beating San Diego, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

De La Rosa (2-3) allowed a run and four hits. The left-hander has won his last three starts against the Dodgers after going 0-8 with a 7.32 ERA in his 10 previous career starts against them.

Pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu’s two-out single in the second inning was Los Angeles’ last hit until Matt Kemp doubled to right-center with two outs in the eighth against Adam Ottavino.

Ryu (3-2) gave up six runs and nine hits in five-plus innings. The Korean-born lefty is 0-2 with a 9.69 ERA in his three starts at Dodger Stadium, but 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in four road starts.

Maholm threw 84 pitches over seven innings, allowing two runs and six hits in his fourth start with the defending NL West champions. Chris Withrow struck out Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki (too-loh-WIT’-skee) with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to help preserve the win.

Rockies Score 3 in 11th, Hold off Dodgers 5-4

colorado-rockiesLOS ANGELES (AP) — Charlie Blackmon hit an RBI single in the 11th inning and the Colorado Rockies got home runs from Troy Tulowitzki and Corey Dickerson to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 on Friday night.

Adam Ottavino took over in the eighth for Rockies starter Jordan Lyles as a steady drizzle sent many in the crowd of 44,866 for cover. Ottavino retired the side in order before Boone Logan struck out his first two batters in the ninth — including Matt Kemp, who was ejected by umpire Angel Hernandez for arguing a called third strike.

It was Kemp’s seventh career ejection and the Dodgers’ first this season.

The drizzle had turned into a downpour by the 10th. Brandon Barnes pinch-hit for reliever Rex Brothers (2-2) with one out in the 11th and doubled to right field against Jamey Wright (1-1).

Baseball Will Look at Pine Tar Rule After Season

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig says the sport will wait until after the season to study whether the rule preventing pitchers from using pine tar should be changed.

New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda was suspended for 10 games Thursday, a day after umpires found pine tar on his neck during a game against Boston. Pineda said he was trying to get a better grip on balls on a cool night, and pitchers say they suspect pine tar use may be routine — although usually discreet.

Baseball rules prohibit pitchers from using foreign substances.

“When the year is over, we ought to look at all this,” Selig told the Associated Press Sports Editors on Friday.

No, No: Illinois School Puts up Pair of No-Hitters

baseballHARDIN, Ill. (AP) — Not again!

Calhoun High School in the small southwestern Illinois town of Hardin pulled off a pair of no-hitters Thursday over Greenfield High School.

According to The Telegraph in Alton (http://bit.ly/QLEdLY), the Warriors baseball team blanked Greenfield 9-0. Pitcher Mitch Bick struck out 18 and walked one.

Classmate Grace Baalman threw a no-hitter for the Warriors softball team in its 10-0 win over Greenfield. Baalman struck out nine over five innings and didn’t walk anyone. The lone Greenfield batter to reach base (on an error) was picked off.

Hardin is about 40 miles north of St. Louis.

MLB Clarifies Possession on DP Forceouts

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Baseball clarified the meaning of possession for infielders trying to turn double plays on forceouts, saying they must have complete control of the ball but may drop it after intentionally opening their gloves for transfers to their throwing hands.

In the first season of expanded instant replay, when infielders have possession while trying to turn double plays has become controversial.

Major League Baseball said the interpretation of the Playing Rules Committee was agreed to by MLB, the players’ association and the umpires’ union.

MLB said Friday the committee, chaired by New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, determined “a legal catch has occurred … if the fielder had complete control over the ball in his glove, but drops the ball after intentionally opening his glove to make the transfer to his throwing hand.”

Known for Glove, Nolan Arenado Improving at Plate

Nolan Arenado Colorado RockiesDENVER (AP) — Already known for his hit-robbing glove, Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado is working on becoming more of an all-around player.

He sends Troy Tulowitzki batting practice video for evaluation and has cool hitting conversations with Justin Morneau in the cold tub.

The education of Arenado as a hitter is coming along quite well, with the second-year player off to a sizzling start at the plate. He’s in the midst of a 14-game hitting streak that’s elevated his average to .290 and his place in the batting order to the second spot.

Colorado opens a three-game trip to Los Angeles on Friday with a chance to take over first place in the NL West.

Royals Dominated by Kluber in 5-1 Loss to Indians

kc-royals

CLEVELAND (AP) — One by one, the Royals went to the plate and came back empty.

Corey Kluber had them flailing and failing. They missed the right-hander’s pitches, popped them up or hit weak groundouts against Cleveland’s starter.

He controlled them — completely.

Kluber struck out a career-high 11 and allowed Kansas City just four hits in his first complete game, leading the Indians to a 5-1 win over the Royals.

“He handcuffed us,” Royals manager New Yost said. “He threw a great game. We couldn’t do anything with him, nothing all day long.”

Kluber (2-2) didn’t walk a batter and let Cleveland manager Terry Francona give some needed rest to his bullpen. Kluber is the first Cleveland pitcher with a complete game, 11 strikeouts, no walks and no earned runs since Len Barker’s perfect game in 1981.

David Murphy and Asdrubal Cabrera delivered two-run hits in the Indians’ five-run fifth off Bruce Chen (1-2), who controlled Cleveland’s lineup for four innings.

“Obviously I’m not very happy with the fifth inning,” said Chen, who had retired 11 straight heading into the fifth. “I wasn’t able to make good pitches. Early in the game I was mixing my pitches well. There were some key at-bats where I could have made better pitches.”

The Royals scored their only run — and unearned one — off Kluber in the seventh when Omar Infante singled and scored when Indians first baseman Nick Swisher made a half-hearted attempt at Mike Moustakas’ grounder, which got by him for an error and rolled all the way into the right-field corner.

Other than that, Kansas City’s hitters were unable to do much against Kluber, whose previous long outing was 8 2-3 innings last July against the White Sox. He’s 3-0 in four career starts against the Royals.

“He put it to us,” said Alex Gordon, who went 0 for 4 and struck out to end the game. “Give him credit. You look at our offense today and say we stunk. That’s how it was.”

Chen coasted through four innings, dominating the Indians with a mix of off-speed pitches before they touched him for five runs and chased him in the fifth.

The left-hander gave up a leadoff single to Cabrera in the first but clamped down on the Indians until the fifth when Carlos Santana led off with a double, snapping an 0-for-16 slide with just his third hit in 48 at-bats. Michael Brantley followed with a single to center for his team-leading 19th RBI, giving Cleveland a 1-0 lead.

The Indians didn’t stop there as Murphy slapped a two-run single to left, and Cabrera made it 5-0 with his double down the left-field line to end Chen’s outing. It was Cleveland’s biggest inning this season.

“It’s part of the game,” Chen said. “I have to be more consistent. The first four innings I was able to establish all my pitches. I just need to do it the whole game.”

Kansas City managed just one hit off Kluber in the first four innings, and then the Royals ran their way out of a scoring chance in the fifth.

Alcides Escobar singled with two outs and Jarrod Dyson followed with a base hit. Escobar hesitated rounding second, and his indecision cost him as Brantley threw him out from center trying to take third.

The Royals turned a nifty double play to end the first.

With a Cabrera at third, first baseman Eric Hosmer fielded Jason Kipnis’ hard grounder, stepped on first and threw home. Catcher Brett Hayes made a sweeping tag on Cabrera, who was called out. Crew chief Bill Miller called for a review to see if Hayes had blocked the plate, but the call was confirmed.

NOTES: Royals 1B coach Rusty Kuntz returned to the team after undergoing surgery on his broken left arm. Kuntz was struck during pregame batting practice on Monday. He had a plate and eight screws inserted. There’s no timetable on his return to the coaching box. … The Royals open a three-game series in Baltimore on Friday with Yordano Ventura (1-1) facing Ubaldo Jimenez (0-3). … Royals RF Nor Aoki is batting .111 (5-for-45) on the road and .441 (15-for-34) at home. … Slumping catcher Salvador Perez got the day off. He’s in a 1-for-26 slide.
