Umpires in Kansas City-Detroit Game Overturn 2 Calls on Review

mlb bigDETROIT (AP) — Instant replay is a hit so far at Comerica Park.

The Detroit Tigers benefited from a pair of reviews that overturned calls at first base in Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

In the sixth inning, Tyler Collins of the Tigers was initially called out at first, giving Kansas City a 4-6-3 double play. The play was reviewed and Collins was ruled safe, although Detroit didn’t score that inning.

In the 10th, Kansas City’s Norichika Aoki was called safe at first, and it looked like the Royals would have first and third with two outs and the game tied.

But upon further review, the throw barely beat Aoki. He was called out to end the threat.

Eovaldi Helps Marlins Beat Rockies 4-3

colorado-rockiesMIAMI (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi pitched six innings and the Miami Marlins made the most of five hits to beat the Colorado Rockies for the second night in a row Tuesday, 4-3.

The Marlins’ 2-0 start hints at big improvement from last year, when they began 14-41 en route to a 100-loss season. The Rockies are 0-2 after finishing last in the NL West in 2013.

Miami’s rotation — the youngest in the majors — stifled the Rockies for the second game in a row. Eovaldi (1-0) allowed two runs and struck out six after Jose Fernandez limited Colorado to one run in the season opener. Eovaldi gave up six hits, walked one and reached 99 mph on the radar gun.

Percentage of Foreign MLB Players Drops Slightly

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — The percentage of Major League Baseball players born outside the United States declined slightly for the second straight season.

The commissioner’s office said Tuesday that 223 players among the 853 on opening-day rosters and inactive lists were born outside the 50 states. At 26.1 percent, the share is down from 28.2 percent last year and 28.4 percent in 2012.

Players come from 16 countries and territories, the most since 2008.

The Dominican Republic has topped the list each year since MLB began tracking in 2005. But its 82 players are down from a high of 99 in 2007.

Venezuela was next with 59, followed by Cuba, which set a high with 19 — four more than its previous mark set last year.

Fernandez, Marlins Beat Rockies 10-1

colorado-rockiesMIAMI (AP) — Jose Fernandez looked just as good as he did last year in the season opener, and the Miami Marlins’ batting order looked much improved.

Fernandez struck out nine and allowed one run in six innings Monday, and Marlins newcomer Casey McGehee drove in four runs with two doubles to help Miami beat the Colorado Rockies 10-1.

The sellout crowd of 37,116 was the largest yet at Marlins Park, which opened two years ago.

The 21-year-old Fernandez earned the victory while becoming the youngest NL opening-day starter since Dwight Gooden in 1986, according to STATS. And he picked up where he left off last season, when he went 12-6 and was voted NL Rookie of the Year.

The right-hander’s strikeout total matched Josh Beckett’s team record for an opener. Fernandez threw 73 strikes and only 21 balls to 23 batters.

husker baseballFAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — The University of Arkansas is set to hosting Nebraska in mid-week college baseball.

The Razorbacks and Cornhuskers are to play starting at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday and at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.

Arkansas is 17-10 overall while Nebraska is 15-12.

Rockies’ Chatwood to go on DL with Sore Hamstring

Tyler Chatwood Colorado RockiesMIAMI (AP) — Colorado Rockies right-hander Tyler Chatwood will be placed on the disabled list Tuesday and will miss his scheduled start Wednesday at Miami because of a strained left hamstring, manager Walt Weiss said.

Right-hander Jordan Lyles will be recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take Chatwood’s turn, Weiss said before Monday’s opener.

Chatwood was hurt running out a triple in a spring training game Friday. He threw fine in a bullpen session Sunday, Weiss said, but is having trouble covering first base.

Colorado already is without right-hander Jhoulys Chacin, expected to be sidelined until early May because of a shoulder injury.

The move involving Chatwood might be retroactive, meaning he would be out less than 15 days, Weiss said.

Ump’s Call Overturned, 1st Time by Expanded Replay

mlb bigMILWAUKEE (AP) — An umpire’s call has been overturned for the first time under Major League Baseball’s expanded replay system, with Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun ruled out instead of safe.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez challenged the sixth-inning play at Miller Park on Monday. Braun was originally called safe at first base by umpire Greg Gibson on an infield single.

The call was reversed to out after a review that lasted 58 seconds.

Minutes later, another call on opening day was overturned in Pittsburgh when a Chicago Cubs runner was eventually ruled out at first base on a pickoff.

Earlier in the day, expanded replay was used for the first time in the majors in the Cubs-Pirates game at PNC Park. That umpire’s call at first base was confirmed.

Gonzalez’s Single Lifts Tigers over Royals 4-3

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Alex Gonzalez drove in the winning run in his Detroit debut, lining a single to left off Greg Holland in the ninth inning that gave the Tigers a 4-3 opening-day victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday.

Acquired by Detroit following an injury to shortstop Jose Iglesias, Gonzalez made a costly error in Kansas City’s three-run fourth but made up for that with a tying triple in the seventh. He then singled with men on first and third in the ninth.

Joe Nathan (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth in his first appearance for the Tigers.

Wade Davis (0-1) allowed a one-out walk to Alex Avila and a single to Nick Castellanos in the ninth. Holland couldn’t escape the jam.

Umps Headed by Kellogg, Vanover Work Replay Room

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Crew chiefs Jeff Kellogg and Larry Vanover head the eight umpires working in Major League Baseball’s replay room for the first eight days of video review.

The league plans to have a pair of four-man crews man the replay room each week at Major League Baseball Advanced Media’s Manhattan office. Brian O’Nora, Dan Bellino and D.J. Reyburn are part of Kellogg’s crew that started its shift Monday night, and Angel Hernandez, Paul Nauert and Adrian Johnson are part of Vanover’s crew.

MLB plans to announce which eight umpires are in the room each week but will not identify which umpire reviews a specific replay.

Royals’ Teaford Sold to Korean Club LG Twins

Everett Teaford Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The rights to Royals left-hander Everett Teaford were sold to the LG Twins of the Korean Baseball Organization after it became clear he was not going to make the team out of spring training.

Terms of the sale Sunday were not disclosed.

The 29-year-old Teaford was 4-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 31 appearances at Triple-A Omaha last season. He made one appearance at the major league level, and is 3-5 with a 4.25 ERA in 45 major league outings with Kansas City.

The Royals have plenty of pitching in the bullpen, and Teaford appeared to be one of the odd men out. He was assigned to minor league camp on March 14.

Kansas City opens the season Monday in Detroit.
