MLB Sets Record with 239 Extra-Inning Games

mlb bigThis has become an extra special season in Major League Baseball.

MLB has set a record for the most extra-inning games in a year, breaking the mark Tuesday night when a pair of games ran long.

There have been 239 extra-inning games so far, STATS said. That tops the 237 from 2011.

Toronto beat Baltimore 3-2 in 10 innings to break the record, then Arizona topped San Diego 2-1 in 12 innings.

The Diamondbacks also set a major league record for most extra innings played in a season with 79. They surpassed the 76 played by Minnesota in 1969.

Arizona has played the most extra-inning games this year, going 17-7.

NU BSB: Huskers Open Fall Practice

husker baseballLincoln – The Nebraska baseball team opened fall practice on Thursday afternoon with a three-hour workout at Hawks Field.

Head Coach Darin Erstad met with the media before the start of today’s practice and discussed what he wants to see this fall.

“Our older guys know what we expect out of them, the pace we want to play at,” Erstad said. “We have a lot of versatile pieces. We want everyone to complete and we’ll see how things fall into place.”

The Huskers will practice over the next six weeks, before ending the fall season with their annual Red-White Series. The three-game series is set for Oct. 15-17, with game times yet to be announced.

The Huskers return a solid nucleus from a team that was one win away from winning the Big Ten Tournament last season. The Huskers fell to Indiana in the bottom of the ninth of the Big Ten title game to end the season, while the Hoosiers went on to play in the College World Series.

Competition should be high during the fall, as 18 new players are on the fall roster.

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Todd Helton homered twice and matched a career high with six RBIs to power the Colorado Rockies past the Cincinnati Reds 9-6 on Friday night.

Jorge De La Rosa pitched six effective innings for his 15th win. Helton’s 28th career multihomer game and first since 2011 left him one hit shy of 2,500.

The first of his two three-run homers came in the fourth off Bronson Arroyo (13-10) roughed up for six runs and nine hits over 3 1-3 innings in his shortest outing of the season. He issued a one-out walk in the first, ending a 30-inning string without one, and had his four-game winning streak snapped.

Helton homered again in the seventh off reliever Logan Ondrusek, his 11th of the season.

kc-royalsTORONTO (AP) — Mark Buehrle pitched seven shutout innings to win his sixth straight decision and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Kansas City 3-2 on Friday night, ending the Royals’ winning streak at five games.

Adam Lind drove in two runs for the Blue Jays, who have won 10 of 14 meetings with Kansas City dating to 2011.

The Royals, who came in six games behind Oakland for the second AL wild-card berth, lost for the first time since Aug. 24 against Washington, the final defeat in a seven-game skid.

Buehrle (11-7) allowed four hits, walked one and struck out five to match his longest winning streak since 2005, when he won a career-best nine consecutive decisions. The left-hander is 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his past eight outings. He’s gone 8-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 14 home starts this season.

Rockies RHP Betancourt to Have Tommy John surgery

Rafael-Betancourt-Rockies-CDENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt has decided to have Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his pitching elbow.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Friday that the 38-year-old Betancourt wants to pitch again, so this is probably the best course of action.

Betancourt was injured a week ago while attempting to close out a game against Philadelphia. An MRI confirmed he had torn his ulnar collateral ligament, and he was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Initially, Betancourt considered undergoing platelet-rich plasma therapy, followed by a rehab program. But he changed his mind, deciding he should get the damaged ligament repaired to give him the best chance to resume his career. He is likely to be sidelined for at least a year.

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Bruce Chen bounced back with a solid start and the Kansas City Royals completed a sweep and won their fifth straight game, beating Minnesota 3-1 Thursday to hand the Twins their fifth loss in a row.

The Royals took all three games at Target Field.

Greg Holland earned his 36th save in 38 chances.

Alcides Escobar, Chris Getz and Alex Gordon hit RBI singles for the Royals.

Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota, which has totaled just six runs during its losing skid.

Samuel Deduno (8-8) allowed three runs in three innings before leaving because of soreness in his right shoulder.

Rockies’ Chacin Takes No-Hitter into 7th

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Jhoulys Chacin did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the seventh inning and hustled for a crucial RBI to help the Colorado Rockies beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 Wednesday night.

Vying for the second no-hitter in franchise history and second ever at Coors Field, Chacin (13-7) tied a season high with nine strikeouts. Brandon Crawford’s single to center field was the only hit Chacin allowed in seven innings. He also yielded an unearned run.

The crowd of 27,268 gave Chacin a standing ovation after Crawford’s hit.

Troy Tulowitzki and Wilin Rosario had two hits each for Colorado, which built a 5-1 lead through six innings.

Perez Homers Twice, Leads Duffy, Royals Past Twins

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Salvador Perez had four hits and two home runs, Danny Duffy pitched 6 2-3 shutout innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 8-1 Wednesday night.

Perez hit two-run homers in the fourth and eighth innings to power the Royals to their fourth straight win.

Duffy (2-0) was called up from Triple-A before the game and replaced the struggling Wade Davis in the rotation. He allowed five hits and struck out seven in his third start for Kansas City since having elbow surgery last June.

The Twins struck out 10 times and set the club record for strikeouts in a season with 31 games to go. Minnesota batters have fanned 1,127 times, breaking the previous mark of 1,121 set in 1997.

Royals Option Davis and Coleman to Minors

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Kansas City Royals optioned pitchers Wade Davis and Louis Coleman to Class A Wilmington on Wednesday to make room for Danny Duffy and Luke Hochevar.

By sending Davis and Coleman to Class A, the Royals can recall them by Tuesday since Wilmington finishes its regular season on Monday and likely won’t make the postseason.

Players optioned to the minors must remain there for 10 days, but that rule doesn’t apply if the minor league club finishes its season.

Duffy is replacing the struggling Davis in the rotation and is starting Wednesday’s game against Minnesota. Hochevar returns from three days of paternity leave and has a 1.93 ERA in 44 games out of the bullpen.

Pence, Sandoval Help Giants Beat Rockies 5-3

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval hit back-to-back homers and Yusmeiro Petit won his first game in four years, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Pence and Sandoval went deep in the opening inning, marking the first time all season the Giants have hit back-to-back homers.

Brandon Belt kept up his torrid hitting with four singles. He also scored twice to help San Francisco win for the third time in four games.

Petit (1-0) was recently called up from Triple-A Fresno to fill in for Matt Cain, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list last week with a bruised right forearm.

Petit lasted six innings, allowed six hits and two runs. He also struck out six.

Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his 32nd save in 36 chances.
