Man Dies After Fall from Turner Field Upper Deck

Turner-Field-Baseball-AtlanATLANTA (AP) — Police say a man who fell more than 60 feet from an upper-level platform at Atlanta’s Turner Field onto a parking lot during a baseball game has died.

Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee confirmed the death of the unidentified man late Monday.

He said the man fell before 9 p.m. during Monday night’s game between the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.

Chafee said witnesses described the fall as accidental. He was not sure whether wet conditions contributed to the fall.

Heavy rains had led to a nearly two-hour delay of the game, which was scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m.

Davis Returns, Leads Royals over Marlins, 6-2

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Wade Davis came off the family emergency leave list and pitched six solid innings, Billy Butler homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Miami Marlins 6-2 on Monday night.

The Royals won for the 17th time in 20 games, while the Marlins are 1-8 in their past nine.

Davis had not pitched since Aug. 2, returning to Florida to be with his family after the death of his stepbrother on Aug. 3.

Davis (6-9) allowed two runs and six hits while striking out three and walking two.

Marlins starter Tom Koehler (3-8) held the Royals hitless until two out in the fourth, when they pieced together four straight hits.

Little League to Introduce Drug Education Program

Little League Baseball LogoSOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Little League Baseball plans to introduce an educational program for coaches and volunteers intended to raise awareness about the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs.

Working with the Taylor Hooton Foundation, Little League hopes to have an online program ready for next season. Little League had been speaking with the foundation for more than a year about a program, well before Major League Baseball’s recent suspensions of more than a dozen players.

The suspensions Aug. 5 came less than two weeks before the start of the Little League World Series on Thursday.

The Hooton Foundation is named after a high school pitcher who committed suicide in 2003. Doctors attributed Taylor Hooton’s behavior to depression caused after he stopped using PEDs.

Royals Activate 2B Getz from Disabled List

Kansas City Royals v Boston Red SoxKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have activated Chris Getz from the 15-day disabled list and put him in the starting lineup at second base.

Getz was set to play Monday night in the series opener against the Miami Marlins.

Getz has been out since July 28 with a sprained left knee. He hit .300 in five rehab games with Triple-A Omaha. Getz hit .209 with one home run and 14 RBIs in 53 games for Kansas City before the injury.

The Royals also put infielder Jamey Carroll on the roster after acquiring him in a trade Sunday with the Minnesota Twins.

Kansas City optioned left-handed pitcher Will Smith and infielder Irving Falu to Omaha. Falu was with the big league club for one game and did not play.

Arenado, Rockies Sweep NL Central-Leading Pirates

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning and the Colorado Rockies beat Pittsburgh 3-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep of the NL Central-leading Pirates.

The Pirates came to Coors Field this weekend with a five-game winning streak. They hold a three-game edge over St. Louis, and host the Cardinals in a three-game series starting Tuesday night.

Pedro Alvarez homered for the Pirates.

Twins Trade INF Jamey Carroll to Royals

Jamey-Carroll-Kansas-City-RKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have added infield depth by making a trade with the Minnesota Twins for Jamey Carroll.

The Twins will get either a player to be named or cash. The deal was announced after both teams played Sunday.

The Royals beat Boston 4-3 and are in playoff contention.

The 39-year-old Carroll singled and scored for the Twins in their 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. He is hitting .230 with nine RBIs.

Shields Gets Rare Home Win, Royals Beat Red Sox

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — James Shields earned his first home win in more than three months, Alex Gordon homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Sunday.

The Royals improved to 18-5 since the All-Star break, winning seven consecutive series.

Shields (7-8), who had not won at Kauffman Stadium since an April 30 victory over Tampa Bay, limited the Red Sox to three runs and seven hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Gordon hit a 2-2 pitch from John Lackey (7-10) out to right in the third for his third homer in five games.

Lackey, who is 0-4 in his past five starts, walked David Lough and Eric Hosmer to lead off the first. Gordon’s two-out single scored Lough to tie it at 1.

Royals Place Miguel Tejada on DL

Miguel-Tejada-Kansas-City-RKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have placed Miguel Tejada on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf.

Tejada was injured while diving for a ball in the seventh inning on Saturday. The 39-year old was hitting .288 in 53 games and had won the starting second base job.

The Royals also activated All-Star catcher Salvador Perez from the concussion list after he missed seven games. Perez was in the lineup Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, batting fifth.

The Royals recalled infielder Irving Falu, who hit .341 in 24 games last season, from Triple A-Omaha and optioned left-handed pitcher Donnie Joseph, who threw two scoreless innings Saturday, to their Pacific Coast League affiliate. The Royals designated for assignment catcher Brett Hayes and activated right-handed pitcher Wade Davis from the family emergency leave list.

Rockies Rally in 6th to Top Pirates, 6-4

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Dexter Fowler had two hits and two RBIs and the Colorado Rockies used a big sixth inning to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 Saturday night.

The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 48 minutes because of a weather cell that slowly moved into the area before the first pitch. Heavy rain and lightning hit Coors Field after the scheduled 6:10 MDT start.

The Pirates have lost two straight after winning 14 of 19 and lost left fielder Starling Marte to a left hand injury in the seventh inning.

The Rockies put together a two-out rally in the sixth against A.J. Burnett. Nolan Arenado doubled to score Michael Cuddyer, Jonathan Herrera walked and pinch-hitter Charlie Blackmon doubled to tie the game 3-all.

Fowler laced a two-run single to end Burnett’s night.

Burnett (5-8) allowed six runs — five earned — on eight hits while striking out eight in 5 2-3 innings.

Ellsbury Leads Red Sox to 5-3 Win over Royals

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jacoby Ellsbury matched a career high with four hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Ellsbury had RBI-doubles in the fourth and sixth innings and also stole his major league-leading 42nd base.

Red Sox starter Felix Doubront gave up three runs on six hits and four walks in four-plus innings

He was replaced by Brandon Workman (3-1), who picked up his second victory of the week with 1 1-3 scoreless innings. Koji Uehara pitched a flawless ninth to collect his 12th save in 15 chances.

Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie (12-8), who had won his previous four starts, threw a season-high 123 pitches in seven innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits and a walk.
