Romeo leads Nebraska Women past Illinois 86-71 in Big Ten

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballHOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) — Natalie Romeo hit seven 3-pointers and scored 26 points, both career highs, to lead seventh-seeded Nebraska to an 86-71 win over Illinois in the second round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday.

Nebraska (21-9) will play 14th-ranked Iowa, seeded second, in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Hailie Sample and Tear’a Laudermiller had 14 points apiece for the Cornhuskers while Allie Havers added 13 and Emily Cady had 11. Brandi Jeffery had nine rebounds and eight assists to go with her six points.

Ivory Crawford had 19 points and Amarah Coleman 18 for the Illini (15-16), who shot just 34.6 percent.

Romeo, a freshman who has started nine straight games since All-American Rachel Theriot was lost for the season with an ankle injury, was 5 of 7 behind the arc in the first half when the Cornhuskers (21-9) opened a 49-29 lead. She broke her career marks early in the second half with a layup, which she turned into a three-point play. Nebraska shot 61.7 percent and led by 28 with 8:21 to play.

Year After Rule Changes, Game Looks a Lot Like it Used To

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsCINCINNATI (AP) — One year after the NCAA changed how rules were enforced to open up the men’s basketball game, it looks a whole lot like it once did.

Fouls, free throws and scoring increased at the start of last season with a new emphasis on eliminating some of the physical play, especially around the basket. Those statistics leveled off as the season went along, and they’re now back to near where they were two years ago.

Coaches and players say officials went back to calling the game the old way for the most part, and they’re glad to see it. One of the athletic directors involved in the changes says players adjusted as well, and the game is better because of it.

Illinois Holds Off Nebraska for Badly Needed Win, 69-57

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballCHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Rayvonte Rice scored 23 and led Illinois to a badly needed win over Nebraska Wednesday, 69-57.

The Illini (19-11, 9-8 Big Ten) have won two straight as they look for a way into the NCAA tournament.

Nebraska (13-16, 5-12) has lost seven games in a row and nine of its last 10.

Rice had a quiet six-point first half but scored 17 in the second 20 minutes. That included seven straight over a key stretch midway through the half that brought Illinois back from a 40-39 deficit to a 46-42 lead.

He drilled home a long 3-pointer with 1:35 left in the game to give Illinois a 59-50 lead.

Kendrick Nunn and Leron Black added 11 each for Illinois.

Shavon Shields led Nebraska with 14 points. Terran Petteway added 13.

Nuggets Win 2nd Straight Under Interim Coach Melvin Hunt

Denver_NuggetsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kenneth Faried had 18 points and 14 rebounds to help the Denver Nuggets win their second straight since firing coach Brian Shaw, 100-85 over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

Will Barton scored 17 points off the bench and the Nuggets outscored Minnesota 52-28 in the paint to make interim coach Melvin Hunt 2-0 since taking over for Shaw. The Nuggets have won back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 14.

Andrew Wiggins scored 20 points for the Timberwolves, who delivered their first lackluster effort since acquiring Kevin Garnett in a trade from Brooklyn two weeks ago. They shot just 39 percent and shot 3 of 18 on 3-pointers in losing their fourth straight game.

Arcidiacono Saves No. 4 ‘Nova in 76-72 Victory over Bluejays

Creighton-Jays-BasketballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ryan Arcidiacono converted a three-point play to give No. 4 Villanova the lead in the last minute and came up with the game’s final rebound, allowing the Wildcats to turn back Creighton’s upset bid and win its 11th straight game, 76-72 on Tuesday night.

Austin Chatman’s 3-pointer pulled the Bluejays within 74-72 with 6 seconds left, and Creighton got the ball back after Arcidiacono ran into Chatman as Villanova tried to inbound. Will Artino missed what would have been the tying layup, and Arcidiacono grabbed the ball, got fouled and made the free throws.

Arcidiacono finished with 23 points and Dylan Ennis matched his career high with 19 for the Wildcats (28-2, 15-2 Big East), who trailed by nine points in the first half.

Chatman scored 21 points to lead the Bluejays (13-17, 4-13), who lost for the seventh time when leading in the final minute.

Khris Middleton led Milwaukee with 20 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Bucks, who have lost five of six.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets have fired coach Brian Shaw after 1½ seasons.

General manager Tim Connelly said in a statement Tuesday: “You won’t find a better guy than Brian and he is one of the brightest basketball minds I’ve ever been around. Unfortunately things didn’t go as we hoped, but we know with his basketball acumen that he has a very bright future ahead of him.”

Assistant coach Melvin Hunt will serve as interim coach.

Shaw went 56-85 for a .397 winning percentage. Denver takes a 20-39 record and a six-game losing streak into its game against Milwaukee on Tuesday night.

Shaw replaced George Karl, who was ousted after Denver won a franchise-record 57 games in 2012-13 only to be bounced from the first round of the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

The Huskers had their longest break since the start of Big Ten play, as Nebraska has been off since a 81-57 loss at Ohio State on Thursday evening. In that game, the Buckeyes shot 54 percent, including 11-of-19 from 3-point range, and put four players in double figures.

Freshman Tarin Smith was one of the highlights for the Huskers in the loss to the Buckeyes, scoring a career-high 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including all three of his 3-pointers. Smith has become more of an offensive threat in the last month, averaging 6.2 points per game on 57 percent shooting over Nebraska’s last six contests. He has shot 50 percent or better in all six games dating back to Feb. 7.

Junior Terran Petteway had 12 points and three assists while David Rivers came off the bench for 10 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. Rivers’ 10-point effort was his highest total since scoring 12 points in the season opener.

The Huskers are in a tie for 11th place entering the last week of the season, one game back of Minnesota, in hopes of avoiding the first-round game in the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago.

Illinois is 18-11 on the season and 8-8 in Big Ten play following an 86-60 win over Northwestern Saturday evening. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Illini.
