NPCC Knights to Face Central Wyoming in Region IX Quarterfinals

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights will continue their season when they face the Central Wyoming College Rustlers in the quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletics Association Region IX men’s basketball tournament in Powell, Wyoming on Thursday, March 5.

The Knights, who are the second seed in the south sub-region, defeated Otero Junior College 79 – 73 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Rustlers, the No. 3 seed in the north sub-region, defeated Sheridan College 82 – 79 to advance.

This is the second year in a row that the Knights have faced the Rustlers in the Region IX tournament.  The Knights defeated the Rustlers 71 – 69 in the first round of last year’s tournament.

The Knights are 23 – 8 heading into the game. They are led by sophomore Cameron Williams from Omaha South in scoring with a 21 points per game average.  Williams is currently 18th in the nation in scoring and seventh on the Knights all-time scoring list.  Williams also averages 3.3 rebounds per game and 2.4 assists per game.

Other players to watch for the Knights are sophomore Marco Pascolo from Udine, Italy, Shyquinn Dix, a freshman from Stamford, Connecticut, and CJ Polk, a freshman from Milwaukee.

Pascolo is averaging 10.7 points per game and leads the team in rebounding with 7.5 rebounds per game and has recorded seven double-doubles this season. Dix is averaging 10.5 points per game, 1.9 assists per game and 2.4 rebounds per game coming off the bench. Polk, who has stepped into the starting lineup following the injury to Xavier Hall, is averaging 9. 2 points per game.  He has averaged 13.2 points per game the past seven games.

The Knights are averaging 78 points per game while allowing 70.7 points per game.

The Rustlers, are 19 – 9 on the season. They are averaging 79.3 points per game and allowing 72 points per game.  The Rustlers have two players averaging in double-figures.  Sophomore Bryce Canda leads the Rustlers with 19.7 points per game. Canda also averages 6.2 rebounds per game to lead the Rustlers.  The other Rustler to average in double-figures is sophomore Elmer Lopez, who is averaging 13.4 points per game.

The Rustlers like to shoot from behind the arc.  They average 25.5 three-point attempts per game and make 9.9 three-pointers per game.

The winner of the matchup will play the winner of host school Northwest Wyoming and Western Nebraska Community College in the semi-finals on Friday.

Four Huskers Earn Big Ten Awards

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – Emily Cady and Rachel Theriot earned second-team All-Big Ten honors, while Tear’a Laudermill added honorable-mention recognition when the Big Ten Conference announced its postseason awards live on BTN on Monday.

Cady, a 6-2 senior forward from Seward, Neb., averaged a double-double with 12.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game to help the Huskers record their fourth consecutive 20-win season in 2014-15. A four-year starter who has made 129 straight starts since the first game of her freshman season, Cady owns 1,415 points while ranking third in school history with 1,089 rebounds. She enters the Big Ten Tournament needing just five rebounds to join the conference’s all-time top 10 in that category. Cady also ranks No. 5 in Husker history in blocked shots (111), while recording more assists (302) than any other post player in Nebraska history.

Cady, who earned second-team All-Big Ten honors as a junior, was also an honorable-mention All-Big Ten choice as a freshman and sophomore. She was also a Big Ten All-Freshman selection in 2012.

Theriot, a 6-0 junior point guard from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, joined Cady with second-team All-Big Ten honors despite missing Nebraska’s final eight Big Ten games with an ankle injury that required season-ending surgery on Feb. 19. A first-team All-Big Ten choice as a sophomore when she led the Huskers to the Big Ten Tournament title as the tournament’s MVP, Theriot averaged 16.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists before her injury as a junior.

An honorable-mention All-American as a sophomore, Theriot was a preseason candidate for the Wade, Naismith, Wooden and Lieberman awards, while earning preseason first-team All-Big Ten recognition.

Laudermill, a 5-9 senior guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., added 13.7 points and 3.6 rebounds as a junior while joining Cady in the Husker starting five for all 29 games. It marked the second straight season for Laudermill to earn postseason honors, after claiming a second-team All-Big Ten award in 2014.

Senior Hailie Sample rounded out Nebraska’s All-Big Ten honorees as the school’s Sportsmanship Award winner. The 6-1 forward from Flower Mound, Texas, has produced 7.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game as a senior. Last season, Sample was a member of the Big Ten All-Defensive Team.

No. 7 seed Nebraska returns to action on Thursday at the Big Ten Tournament to take on No. 10 seed Illinois. Tip-off between the Huskers and Fighting Illini at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., is set for 6 p.m., with live TV coverage by BTN.

It will be the third meeting of the season between Nebraska and Illinois, with the Huskers coming from behind in the closing minutes to win a pair of possession games in the first two meetings.

Kentucky No. 1, Change Hits Rest of AP Top 25

basketballKentucky remains the unanimous No. 1 during a tumultuous week in The Associated Press Top 25.

The Wildcats (29-0) received all 65 first-place votes from a media panel on Monday.

Virginia remained at No. 2, but the next three spots changed after Gonzaga and Wisconsin lost.

Duke moved up one to No. 3, Villanova climbed two spots to No. 4 and Arizona was up two to No. 5.

Wisconsin dropped at spot to No. 6 and Gonzaga fell four places to No. 7.

Wichita State moved back into the top 10 at No. 8 and Kansas dropped to No. 9 after losing to Kansas State.

Maryland moved into the top 10 for the first time since 2003 and No. 25 Murray State is ranked for the first time since 2012.

Pelicans hold off Nuggets 99-92 for 5th Straight Win

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Tyreke Evans scored 22 points, Dante Cunningham drew a key charge late in the fourth quarter and the New Orleans Pelicans extended their winning streak to five games by holding off the struggling Denver Nuggets 99-92 on Sunday night.

Eric Gordon added 18 points and Omer Asik grabbed 16 rebounds for the Pelicans, who were without All-Star forward Anthony Davis for a fourth straight game after he re-injured his right shoulder on Feb. 21. The Pelicans are 4-0 in Davis’ absence to remain in the playoff conversation.

Denver dropped its 10th straight at the Pepsi Center, its longest home skid since losing 11 in a row during the 1997-98 season.

Danilo Gallinari had 21 points for Denver, including a half-court shot to end the third quarter that revved up the crowd. The Nuggets fell to 0-6 since the All-Star break.

Cady, Jeffery Notch Double-Doubles in Senior Day Setback

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – Emily Cady and Brandi Jeffery both recorded double-doubles, but Ohio State used a 15-0 run to end the first half to propel the Buckeyes to a 78-60 women’s basketball win over Nebraska on Senior Day for the Huskers at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

With the loss, Nebraska ended the regular season with a 20-9 overall record and a 10-8 Big Ten mark. Ohio State improved to 21-9 and 13-5 in the conference. The Buckeyes secured the No. 3 seed and a double bye at next week’s Big Ten Tournament in Hoffman Estates, Ill., while Nebraska earned the No. 7 seed and a first-round bye.

The Huskers will play their first game at the Sears Centre Arena on Thursday, when they take on 10th-seeded Illinois. Tip-off between the Big Red and Fighting Illini is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be televised live by BTN.

Cady, a 6-2 senior forward from Seward, Neb., led the Huskers with 21 points and 13 rebounds to produce the 33rd double-double of her career and 11th of the season. Jeffery, a senior from Vacherie, La, notched the first double-double of her career with 10 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

Fellow senior Hailie Sample, a 6-1 forward from Flower Mound, Texas, pitched in nine points, six rebounds and three assists, while senior guard Tear’a Laudermill (Moreno Valley, Calif.), contributed eight points on the afternoon.

Nebraska’s four seniors ended their home career with a combined 55-11 record, on their way to a school-record 95 victories over the past four seasons The group combined for more than 500 appearances and more than 350 career starts.

The seniors, who combined for 48 points on the afternoon, had their Senior Day spoiled by Buckeye freshmen Kelsey Mitchell, Asia Doss and Shayla Cooper. Mitchell, the Big Ten’s leading scorer, erupted for 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Doss scored a season-high 14 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Cooper added 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Ameryst Alston gave Buckeyes four players in double figures with 12 points.

As a team, Ohio State hit 43.8 percent of its shots, including 10-of-23 three-pointers. The Buckeyes matched the Huskers on the glass, while winning the turnover battle, 12-9.

Nebraska, which matched Ohio State shot for shot for the first 16 minutes, went cold at the end of the first half and the cold shooting carried over to the second half.

The Huskers ended the game at just 31.4 percent (22-70), including just 6-of-22 from three-point range. NU hit just 27.5 percent of its second-half shots.

Nebraska and Ohio State were locked in a back-and-forth battle for the first 16 minutes, until Laudermill, who was guarding Mitchell for most of the first half, was whistled for her second foul of the game with 4:40 left.

Mitchell hit a pair of free throws to put Ohio State up 32-30 at that point, before Chandler Smith scored on a putback to tie the score at 32 with just under four minutes left. But the Buckeyes took control of the game, finishing the half on a 15-0 run that included Nebraska missing three layups and two open short jumpers.

Mitchell, who finished the half with 16 points, scored 10 without Laudermill on the floor in the final 4:40. Doss also had a big first half for the Buckeyes, knocking down her first three three-pointers of the half on her way to 11 points. Doss entered the game with 15 straight misses from long range.

Cady, Jeffery and Sample kept the Huskers in the game in the first half on Senior Day. Cady finished the half with 13 points and four rebounds, while Jeffery added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Sample pitched in seven points.

Nebraska cut the lead to 12 points early in the second half, but was unable to pull closer the rest of the way in the 18-point setback.

Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament Bracket Announced

Big-Ten-LogoROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten announced the bracket on Sunday for the 2015 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament, which features a five-day format for the first time in conference history. Maryland secured its first outright Big Ten Championship and the No. 1 seed in the tournament in its inaugural season. The tournament is set for March 4-8at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The Terrapins received the tournament’s top seed after recording an 18-0 Big Ten record, joining Ohio State and Purdue as the third team to have an undefeated conference record in Big Ten women’s basketball history. Maryland has won 21 consecutive games, closing out the regular season with a 27-2 overall record. The Terrapins will play their opening tournament game on Friday, March 6, at 11:30 a.m. CT, the first game of the day.

Iowa enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed after compiling a 14-4 conference record and a 23-6 overall mark this season. The Hawkeyes open tournament play on Friday at 6 p.m.

Ohio State secured the No. 3 seed, going 13-5 in Big Ten play and 21-9 overall. The Buckeyes’ first tournament game will be the last game on Friday night at approximately8:30 p.m.

Northwestern and Rutgers finished tied for fourth place with matching 12-6 conference records. The Wildcats won the tiebreaker based on their win over the Scarlet Knights in the regular season. At 22-7 overall, Northwestern earned the No. 4 seed and will play in Friday’s second game at approximately 2 p.m.

The fifth-seeded Scarlet Knights went 21-8 overall and will play in Thursday’s second game at approximately 2 p.m.

Minnesota enters the tournament as the No. 6 seed after finishing 11-7 in the conference and 22-8 overall. The Golden Gophers will play in Thursday’s final game at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Nebraska receives the No. 7 seed after closing out the regular season with a 10-8 record in conference play and a 20-9 overall record. The Huskers will take on No. 10 seed Illinois in Thursday’s third tilt at 6 p.m.

As the No. 8 seed, Michigan squares off against ninth-seeded Michigan State in Thursday’s first contest at 11:30 a.m. The Wolverines finished the regular season at 8-10 in Big Ten games, while Michigan State recorded a 7-11 mark in conference play.

The tournament will open on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. matchup between No. 13 Penn State and No. 12 Indiana, followed by No. 14 Purdue taking on No. 11 Wisconsin at approximately 7:30 p.m.

BTN will carry 10 games of the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while Wednesday’s opening games will appear on BTN Plus. The championship game will be televised by ESPN.

Entering the 2015 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament, seven teams have been crowned champion. Nebraska is the most recent team to earn a title, claiming the program’s first-ever title in 2014. Purdue leads the way with nine tournament titles, while Ohio State owns four tournament championships. Iowa and Penn State have each had two, while Indiana and Michigan State each have one title in program history.

NPCC Knights Advance in Region IX Tournament with Win over Otero

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights basketball team defeated the Otero Junior College Rattlers 79 – 72 at McDonald – Belton Gymnasium Saturday in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX Tournament.

The game was tied at nine with 12:35 minutes to play in the first half when the Knights went on a 12 – 2 run to take the lead with 8:08 to play.  The Knights maintained the lead throughout the first half to lead 39 – 28 at halftime.

In the second half the Knights increased their lead to 64-49.  The Rattlers weren’t finished as they went on a 24 – 11 run to cut the Knights lead to two 75 – 73 with 11 seconds to play.  The Rattlers fouled CJ Polk who hit both of his free throws to put the lead up to four.  On the ensuing play, the Knights Shyquinn Dix stole the ball and went to put up a shot.  He missed the shot but Cameron Williams was right there to seal the victory with a slam dunk.

The Knights improve to 23-8 on the season.  They were led in scoring by Williams, who finished the game with 19 points.  Polk added 17 points and Dix added 14 points.  Tyree Peter also scored in double figures with 11 points.

The Rattlers, who ended their season at 16 – 14 were led in scoring by Josh Blaylock with 18 points.  Shun Williams had 17 points and Brandon Wilson added 11 points.  Wilson recorded a double – double as he also grabbed 10 rebounds.

With the win the Knights advance to the quarterfinals of the Region IX tournament in Powell, Wyoming.  Northwest College, who came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the North Sub –Region defeated Little Big Horn College 104 – 74 to retain the top seed and host the remainder of the tournament which will be held March 5 – 7.

The Knights next opponent is unknown.  Region IX will re-seed the eight remaining teams for the matchups.

Delgado Late Basket helps Seton Hall Snap 6-Game Skid with Win over Jays

Creighton-Jays-BasketballNEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Angel Delgado grabbed a rebound and scored with 16 seconds to play and Seton Hall rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to defeat Creighton 67-66 on Saturday, snapping a six-game losing streak.

Delgado finished with 13 points — all in the second half — and 11 rebounds. Khadeen Carrrington added 13 points, including six in the closing 2:40 as the Pirates (16-12, 6-10 Big East) rallied from five points down to take a 65-64 edge with 1:22 left, their first lead of the game.

Austin Chatman, who had a game-high 23 points, put Creighton ahead with a jumper with 30 seconds to go but Delgado got the rebound of an Isaiah Whitehead miss and scored.

The Bluejays (13-16, 4-12) had at least three chances underneath in the closing seconds but James Milliken and Geoffrey Groselle each missed one.

Favors has 21 Points, 10 Rebounds for Jazz in Win over Nuggets

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Derrick Favors had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, Trey Burke came off the bench to score 19 points and the Utah Jazz beat the struggling Denver Nuggets 104-82 on Friday night.

Gordon Hayward added 15 points and Rudy Gobert had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Jazz. Utah has won five of its last seven.

Will Barton had 22 points for the Nuggets. They have lost nine straight at home and 18 of 20 overall. Denver was in the playoff conversation after a five-game winning streak in mid-January, but has fallen into 13th place in the Western Conference.

Huskers Hope to Send Seniors Off Sunday with Win Over Buckeyes

Tip-off between the Big Red (20-8, 10-7 Big Ten) and the Buckeyes (20-9, 12-5 Big Ten) at Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 4 p.m. (CT) with tickets available now at Huskers.com. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the game at the Pinnacle Bank Arena Box Office beginning at 2 p.m.

Live national TV coverage will be provided by BTN with Kevin Kugler and Brenda VanLengen on the call. Nebraska, which is coming off its most complete game of the season in a 74-50 pounding of Minnesota on Tuesday in Lincoln, will celebrate the careers of Emily Cady, Brandi Jeffery, Tear’a Laudermill and Hailie Sample with Senior Day ceremonies following the game with Ohio State.

The win over Minnesota secured NU’s seniors their fourth consecutive 20-win campaign, becoming the first senior class in school history to accomplish that feat. It was also the 95th win of their impressive careers in Lincoln, establishing a record for the most victories by any class in Husker history.

The senior class has combined for 3,734 points, 2,411 rebounds and 815 assists in their careers. Cady 6-2, F, Seward, Neb.) leads the group with 1,396 points, 1,076 rebounds and 301 assists while starting all 128 games over the past four years. Laudermill (5-9, G, Moreno Valley, Calif.) has joined Cady in NU’s 1,000-point club with 1,086 while adding 291 rebounds and 146 assists. Laudermill has started 58 straight games alongside Cady.

Sample (6-1, F, Flower Mound, Texas) has made 127 starts and owns 700 points, 687 rebounds and 218 assists. Jeffery (5-7, G, Vacherie, La.) owns 35 starts, 552 points, 357 rebounds and 150 assists. Together, the seniors have combined for 500 appearances and are 55-10 at home.
