NBA Commissioner: All-Star Rosters Could Expand in Future

Adam Silver
Adam Silver

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says the league will look at expanding All-Star rosters and the way players are selected.

Speaking before the Kings-Warriors game in Sacramento on Tuesday night, Silver said the NBA will discuss increasing the number of spots for the All-Star game with the players’ union in the future. He says he’s mostly happy with the voting process but could see players getting a vote, too.

Currently, 12 players are selected for the Eastern and Western Conference teams. Fans vote for the starters and coaches choose the reserves. Silver selects any replacements, as he did last week when he chose Kings center DeMarcus Cousins to take Kobe Bryant’s spot in the West.

Silver said it was a difficult decision to select Cousins over Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard. He says he felt for Lillard, and the two exchanged text messages about the decision.

Thompson has Career-High 23, 76ers beat Nuggets 105-98

Denver_NuggetsPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hollis Thompson scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 105-98 victory over the slumping Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.

Michael Carter-Williams had 15 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds and Robert Covington added 17 points for the improving 76ers, who won their third straight home game for the first time since March 2013.

Danilo Gallinari scored 22 points to pace the Nuggets, who dropped their 10th in 11 games. Denver has lost its last three games by an average of 21.7 points.

The 76ers were the laughingstock of the league while starting the season with 17 straight losses. But they have begun to click.

Philadelphia has won three of five, with the two losses in competitive games on the road against Eastern Conference contenders Atlanta and Cleveland.

No. 19 Huskers Open East Coast Swing at No. 21 Rutgers

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe No. 19 Nebraska women’s basketball team makes its first-ever trip to Piscataway, N.J., to take on No. 21 Rutgers in a Big Ten Conference top-25 showdown on Thursday night.

Tip-off between the Big Red (17-4, 7-3 Big Ten) and the Scarlet Knights (16-5, 7-3 Big Ten) is set for 6 p.m. (CT), with live national television coverage by the Big Ten Network. Ed Cohen and Vera Jones will be on the call for BTN. Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, with Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch calling the action on stations across the network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln, 93.3 FM in Omaha and 880 AM in Lexington.

The Huskers, who have won seven of their last eight games, take a 17-game February winning streak with them to New Jersey. Nebraska has not lost a game in the month of February since a 73-53 loss at Michigan State on Feb. 23, 2012. Three of Nebraska’s 17 wins in their February streak have come to top-25 foes, including a pair of top-10 wins over No. 8 Ohio State in 2012 and No. 8 Penn State in 2014. The Huskers have not beaten a top-25 team on the road during the 17-game February winning streak.

Nebraska rebounded from an overtime loss at No. 20 Iowa on Jan. 26, to sweep a pair of home wins against Illinois (Jan. 29) and Michigan (Feb. 1).

Senior Tear’a Laudermill led the Big Red in scoring in all three games. The 5-9 guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., has produced double figures in six straight games, including 24 points in a road win at Wisconsin on Jan. 22. Laudermill, who was a second-team All-Big Ten pick last year, has pushed her season averages to 13.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

The Huskers continue to be led in scoring by junior point guard Rachel Theriot. The All-America candidate is averaging 16.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. A first-team All-Big Ten pick a year ago, Theriot has produced double figures in 19 of 21 games this season.

Senior Emily Cady, a second-team All-Big Ten pick, adds a potent inside presence. The 6-2 forward from Seward, Neb., averages 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists. In Sunday’s win over Michigan, she became the fifth Husker and 17th player in Big Ten history to record 1,000 career rebounds.

The Huskers (12-9, 4-5 Big Ten) ran into tough sledding in their last outing, falling at Minnesota, 60-42, Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis. Nebraska shot just 37 percent from the field against the Gophers, and were doomed by 20 turnovers, which was twice the Huskers’ average in Big Ten play entering the contest. NU had 15 of the turnovers in the first half, as the Huskers dug themselves a seven-point deficit.  Despite the turnovers, the Huskers were within seven and had a chance to cut into the lead in the final four minutes, but Minnesota closed out the win by scoring the final 11 points.

Junior forward Shavon Shields led Nebraska with 11 points in Saturday’s loss and is now nine points away from reaching 1,000 career points. The 6-foot-7 junior is enjoying his best season as a Husker, ranking sixth in the Big Ten with 16.3 points per game and has topped NU in scoring in each of the past two contests. Shields also received good newsSaturday night, as his father, Will, was announced as one of the 2015 inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Northwestern (10-11, 1-7 Big Ten) is looking to snap a seven-game losing streak, as the Wildcats fell to Purdue, 68-60, on Saturday. Northwestern has had its fair share of close games in conference action, as six of its eight Big Ten games have been decided by five points or less or in overtime.

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Tear’a Laudermill scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half when No. 15 Nebraska took control for a 75-60 win over Michigan on Sunday.

Hailie Sample and Rachel Theriot added 14 points apiece for the Cornhuskers (17-4, 7-3 Big Ten), who shot 36 percent in the first half and trailed 31-25. Theriot had 12 points in the second half when Nebraska shot 59 percent and made all nine of its free throws after no attempts in the first half. Theriot and Cady had three-point plays before Theriot’s jumper tied the game at 33. Later, the Wolverines led 51-45 on Siera Thompson’s 3 before the Cornhuskers reeled off 11 straight, capped by another three-point play by Theriot.

Cody Zeller Scores 21, Hornets Rout Nuggets 104-86

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Cody Zeller scored a career-best 21 points, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 17, and the Charlotte Hornets routed the reeling Denver Nuggets 104-86 on Saturday night.

Al Jefferson and Jason Maxiell added 14 points apiece for the Hornets, who have won 10 of their last 13 games.

They have held their opponents to under 100 points in 12 of those games. And their solid play has continued in the absence of Kemba Walker, who underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will be out at least six weeks.

Danilo Gallinari’s 15 points led the Nuggets, who were dealt a blow before the game. Star forward Kenneth Faried and Darrell Arthur, a key reserve, were both held out because of illness.

Walker leads Minnesota’s Romp past Nebraska, 60-42

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mo Walker led Minnesota with 19 points and eight rebounds and Andre Hollins added 12 points, helping the Gophers avenge a recent loss to Nebraska with a 60-42 victory over the sputtering Huskers on Saturday.

Hollins had six assists and five rebounds, too, and the Gophers (14-9, 3-7) bounced back from their latest of six Big Ten losses by five points or fewer. One of those was a 52-49 decision at Nebraska 11 days ago, when Walker had a woeful four points, three turnovers and four fouls.

Shavon Shields had 11 points for the Huskers (12-9, 4-5), who were outscored in the paint 30-18. Terran Petteway scored 10 points, but this was the second straight lackluster performance by the high-caliber duo. After combining to shoot 5 for 23 from the floor in a 58-44 loss at Michigan on Tuesday, they were 8 for 23 this time including a 2-for-11 from 3-point range.
