NPCC Knights Win a Tight Battle against McCook

npcc-knightsWhen the North Platte Community College Knights men’s basketball team plays the McCook Community College Indians it is a tough fought ball game.  Wednesday’s game was no exception. The Knights defeated the Indians 80-77.

McCook jumped out to an early lead 9-3 in the first minute and a half in the game.  The Indians led by as many as seven 25-18 with 10 minutes to go in the first half.  The Knights outscored the Indians over the next four and a half minutes 15-7 to take a 33-32 lead on a field goal by Marco Pascolo.  Through the rest of the half the Knights held on to the lead and led 42-38 at halftime.

In the second half, the Knights stretched out their lead by going on a 15-10 run to lead 57-48.  The run was highlighted by seven consecutive points by Shyquinn Dix.

With the Knights leading 67-57, the Indians began to cut away at the Knights lead.  The Indians trailed by one with less than 15 seconds to go in the game.  CJ Polk was fouled and sent to the free throw line, where he made both shots.  The Indians had the ball on their side of the court with 4.3 seconds left.  The Knights protected the 3-point circle to make sure that the Indians didn’t have a free shot to tie the game.

The Knights had six players score in double figures led by Marco Pascolo who ended up with 14 points.  Cameron Williams was next in the scoring column with 13 points.  The other four Knights in double figures are Tyree Peter with 12 points,  Matt Thomas, Polk and Dix each added 11 points in the contest.

The Indians had four players hit the double digit mark.  Clint Thomas led the way with 21 points, former North Platte High School and Papillion-LaVista stand out Trey Moore added 17, Cody Wudtke scored 13 points and Dominic Cain had 11 points.

The Knights improve to 18-4 overall and 9-1 in the Region IX.  McCook falls to 13-9  and 5-5 in the region.

The Knights play Central Community College at home on Friday in a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference game.  The Knights beat Central on their home court 78-47 earlier this year.

The game is designated as “Mentoring Night”.  All mentors and mentees will receive free admission and a bag of popcorn.

NPCC Lady Knights Fall Short at McCook

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights went down in defeat to the McCook Community College Lady Indians 69-59 on Wednesday at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center in McCook.

The Lady Knights jumped out to an early 12-9 lead with 14:51 to play in the first half.

McCook Lady Indian Chante Church started on a 3-point barrage, hitting five 3-pointers in the first half to give the Lady Indians a 29-24 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Knights rallied to tie the score at 37 with 12:47 to play. With the score tied at 41 the Lady Indians went on a 15-4 run to lead 56-45.

The Lady Indians were able to maintain their lead and win by 10.

The Lady Knights were led in scoring by April Stull, who finished with 17 points. Stull was the only Lady Knight to score in double digits.  Aliyah Brown finished with 9 points and Zulema Viescas chipped in 8 points.

Church led the Lady Indians with 30 points.  The only other Lady Indian to score in double figures was Brooksie McWilliams with 12.  Kendra Baucom grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Indians

The Lady Knights play Central Community College at home on Friday in a National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX Division II game.  The Lady Knights beat Central on their home court 74-58 earlier this year.

The game is designated as “Mentoring Night”.  All mentors and mentees will receive free admission and a bag of popcorn.

Creighton Snaps 9-Game Skid, Beats St. John’s 77-74

Creighton-Jays-BasketballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Toby Hegner had 21 points, James Milliken nailed a pair of late 3-pointers and Creighton snapped a nine-game skid, beating St. John’s 77-74 on Wednesday night.

Hegner made a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to put Creighton (10-12, 1-8 Big East) up 75-72.

D’Angelo Harrison’s missed a 3-point attempt going the other way and Amar Alibegovic grabbed the offensive rebound. Alibegovic elected for two points with a 15-foot jumper, leaving St. John’s (13-7, 2-5) down by one with four seconds.

Hegner made both free throws for Creighton with 2.3 seconds and Harrison missed a 25-footer off the back of the rim at the buzzer.

Millikin scored nine of his 17 points in the final 3:15, starting with a 3-pointer that gave Creighton the lead for good at 65-62.

Harrison had 18 points to lead the Red Storm. Jamal Branch added 17 but fouled out with 2:43 left.

Denver Snaps 7-Game Skid with 93-85 Win over Pelicans

Denver_NuggetsNEW ORLEANS (AP) — Arron Afflalo scored 20 points and the Denver Nuggets snapped a seven-game losing streak, 93-85 over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night.

Afflalo hit four 3-pointers, the last with 2:32 left to increase Denver’s then-tenuous lead to 89-85. After that, the Pelicans were unable to score another point and saw their four-game winning streak end.

Jusuf Nurkic scored 15 for Denver, while Kenneth Faried had 14, highlighted by his soaring dunk over Anthony Davis and Dante Cunningham.

Danilo Gallinari scored 11 points and hit three of Denver’s 10 3-pointers. Ty Lawson had 13 assists.

Davis had 24 points and 12 rebounds, but briefly left the game late in the third quarter after a collision with Faried under the basket. Davis returned with more than 8 minutes left, but the Pelicans were unable to regain the lead.

Tyreke Evans had 25 points for New Orleans.

No. 15 Huskers Return Home to Face Fighting Illini

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe No. 15 Nebraska women’s basketball team hopes to get back on the winning track at home when the Huskers take on Illinois Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Tip-off between the Huskers (15-4, 5-3 Big Ten) and the Fighting Illini (11-9, 2-6 Big Ten) is set for 7 p.m., with tickets available now at Huskers.com. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone in advance of the game by calling the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-8-BIG-RED, or in-person on game day beginning two hours prior to tip-off at the Pinnacle Bank Arena Box Office.

Nebraska had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 78-72 overtime loss at No. 20 Iowa on Monday night. The Huskers led 61-60 after a clutch Rachel Theriot jumper with 4.5 seconds left, but the Hawkeyes got a Whitney Jennings free throw with 1.3 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Iowa scored on each of its overtime possessions to get its first Big Ten win against the Huskers in nine tries.

Senior Emily Cady led the Huskers with 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds to notch the 30th double-double of her career and eighth of the season. The 6-2 forward from Seward, Neb., increased her season averages to 13.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. She is averaging 12.3 points and 11.6 rebounds in Big Ten play, including 19 points and 15 rebounds per contest over the last two games.

Theriot continues to lead the Huskers with 16.9 points and 5.0 assists per game, while senior Tear’a Laudermill is coming on strong in conference play. Laudermill has produced double figures in four straight games to increase her season averages to 12.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, including 13.4 points and 4.1 boards in league play. The 5-9 guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., is averaging 21.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals the past two games.

Illinois comes to Lincoln hoping to snap a five-game losing streak since handing Iowa its only Big Ten loss this season on Jan. 8. The Fighting Illini are coming off a 70-57 loss at Michigan on Monday night.

Michigan beats Nebraska 58-44

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Zak Irvin had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Michigan rode a strong second-half start to a 58-44 victory over Nebraska on Tuesday.

The Wolverines (13-8, 6-3 Big Ten) led 23-18 at intermission and blew the game open after starting the second on a 13-2 run. Irvin closed the spurt with a 3-pointer and the Cornhuskers never got closer than eight points the rest of the night.

Aubrey Dawkins scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and Max Bielfelt added 12 points and nine boards for Michigan. The Wolverines shot 49 percent and were perfect (8 of 8) from the line.

Shavon Shields had 14 points to lead Nebraska (12-8, 4-4), which fell to 0-5 against the Wolverines since joining the conference before the 2011-12 season. The Huskers were outrebounded 34-26.

Clippers Ride Crawford’s Shooting to 102-98 Win over Nuggets

Denver_NuggetsLOS ANGELES (AP) — Jamal Crawford scored 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, and the Los Angeles Clippers held off the Denver Nuggets 102-98 Monday night for their fifth straight victory.

Crawford scored their final five points and had a key save that led to a basket in the closing seconds, when the Clippers completed their biggest comeback of the season after being down by 16 earlier in the game.

Matt Barnes added 18 points for Los Angeles, and Blake Griffin had 14 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists. Chris Paul scored 15 points.

Ty Lawson led the Nuggets with 19 points and 11 assists.

No. 20 Iowa Women Rally, beat No. 15 Nebraska 78-72 in OT

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballIOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Ally Disterhoft scored all 20 of her points in the second half and overtime to lead No. 20 Iowa to its first victory against No. 15 Nebraska in nine tries as a Big Ten opponent, 78-72 on Monday.

Bethany Doolittle had six of her 12 points during the extra period while Iowa outscored Nebraska 17-11. Samantha Logic finished with 22 points and eight assists and Disterhoft had 13 rebounds.

Iowa (16-3, 7-1 Big Ten) rallied with a 17-6 run to lead 60-57 on Disterhoft’s layup with 2:33 left in regulation.

Rachel Theriot’s jumper gave the Cornhuskers (15-4, 5-3) a 61-60 lead with 4.5 seconds. Iowa inbounded long and handed off to Whitney Jennings who drew a foul with 1.3 seconds left. She made one free throw to force overtime.

Tear’a Laudermill and Emily Cady led Nebraska with 19 points each. Cady grabbed 18 boards and Theriot added 15 points.

Huskers Head to Michigan for Super Tuesday

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska men’s basketball team hits the road for an important Big Ten contest, as the Huskers take on Michigan Tuesday night in Ann Arbor.

Tipoff is set for 6:02 p.m. (central) from the Crisler Center, and the contest will be televised nationally on ESPN with Mike Tirico, Dan Dakich and Sam Ponder on the call.Tuesday’s game is also available online and on mobile devices on the WatchESPN app. Tuesday’s matchup with Michigan is the first of two Super Tuesday appearances for the Big Red, as the Huskers will host Wisconsin at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Feb. 10.

The game will be broadcast across the state of Nebraska on the 37-station IMG Husker Sports Radio Network, including KLIN 1400 AM in Lincoln, 1110 KFAB in Omaha and KRVN 880 AM in Lexington with Kent Pavelka calling the action and Matt Davison adding color commentary. The game can be heard for free on Huskers.com and is available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as on TuneIn Radio and on SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

The Huskers (12-7, 4-3 Big Ten) broke out of an offensive slump on Saturday against Michigan State, scoring 79 points against a Spartan defense that was surrendering 61.9 points per game. Nebraska, which averaged a league-low 58.2 points per game in its first six Big Ten games, hit 49 percent from the field and went 27-of-39 from the foul line to earn its fourth win in the last five games.

While All-Big Ten performers Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields combined for 53 points, it was the performances of a pair of role players that helped propel the Huskers above the .500 mark in Big Ten play for the first time in 2014-15. Leslee Smith stepped into the starting lineup after David Rivers suffered a knee injury in practice Thursday night and gave the Huskers seven points and seven rebounds in a career-high 30 minutes. Sophomore Tai Webster came off the bench and played extended minutes after starting center Walter Pitchford was ejected four minutes into the contest and gave the Huskers 13 points, three rebounds and a pair of steals in 28 minutes after playing just 21 minutes in NU’s previous four contests.

Michigan (12-8, 5-3 Big Ten) is coming off a tough 69-64 overtime loss to Wisconsin on Sunday. Derrick Walton Jr. led the Wolverines with 17 points, including a 3-pointer to send the game to overtime, while Zak Irvin added 12 in a losing cause. Michigan was dealt a blow earlier in the month with the season-ending injury to Caris LeVert, as the junior led the Wolverines in scoring (14.9 ppg), rebounding (4.9 rpg) and assists (3.7 apg).

NPCC Basketball Teams Travel to Play McCook CC

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights and Knights travel to McCook on Wednesday, January 28 to play the McCook Community College Indians at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

The women’s game is a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference (NCCAC) game.

The Lady Knights come into the game with a 10-9 overall record and 1-1 in the NCCAC. The Lady Knights are led in scoring by sophomore April Stull of Sweeny, Texas with an average of 15.7 points per game.  Stull currently is third in scoring in Region IX Division II.  Stull also leads the Lady Knights in rebounding with 9.2 rebounds per game, which leads Region IX Division II. Aliyah Brown is the only other Lady Knight to average in double figures in scoring with 10.1 points per game.  Brown is second in Region IX Division II in steals with 3.7 steals per game.

The Lady Indians are 12-10 overall and 1-1 in NCCAC play.  Chante Church leads the Lady Indians in scoring with a 20.2 points per game.  Church is currently second in Region IX Division I – South in scoring and 14th in the nation in scoring. The only other Lady Indian to average double figures in scoring is Lucia Archuleta.  Archuleta is averaging 12.9 points per game.  Kendra Baucom leads the Lady Indians in rebounding with 14.5 points per game, which is third in the nation in rebounding.

The men’s game is a crucial matchup for both teams in the Region IX South Sub-region standings.  The Knights are currently tied with Northeastern Junior College for the number one spot in the sub-region.  The Indians are currently in fourth place.  The top four seeds in the sub-region hosts first-round games in the Region IX Tournament at the end of February.

The Knights are 17-4 on the season and 8-1 in Region IX play.  They are led in scoring by sophomore Cameron Williams of Omaha with a 23.1 points per game average.  Williams is leading Region IX in scoring and is 8th in the nation.  Marco Pascolo, 11.8 points per game, and Shyquinn Dix, 11.3 points per game are the other two Knights averaging in double figures.  Pascolo leads the team in rebounding with eight rebounds per game.

The Indians are 13-8 overall and 5-4 in Region IX. The Indians have five players averaging in double figures led by Clint Thomas, who is averaging 17.8 points per game. Thomas is third in Region IX- South in scoring. Thomas also averages 6.8 rebounds per game to lead the Indians.  Hakim Davis is second on the Indians with a 13.7 points per game average.  Former North Platte High School and Papillion – La Vista standout Trey Moore is averaging 13.2 points per game and 5.2 assists per game.  The other two Indians to average in double figures are Dominic Cain, 12.0 points per game, and Karim El-Amin, 10.6 points per game.
