NPCC Coach’s ‘Gatorade Bath’ to be Shown on America’s Funniest Home Videos on May 18

Dick Thurin Gatorade Fail NPCC Knights BasketballIn his 48 years of coaching high school and college basketball, North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball coach Dick Thurin never imagined that he would gain national recognition for a play he never even saw coming.

It was March 2013. Caught up in the excitement of winning the district competition and advancing to nationals, three of Thurin’s players decided to celebrate the victory by dousing their beloved coach with a bucket of ice water. The celebration, however, did not go exactly as planned.

The water was tossed and, with barely a moment to brace for impact, Thurin found himself face down on the slick wood floor.

“When football players celebrate wins with ‘Gatorade baths’ they are usually outside on grass, but we happened to be inside on a basketball court,” he said. “Water on gym floors is never a good thing.”

The laughter and excitement of the players and crowd quickly turned to gasps and hushed silence as Thurin struggled to his feet in the slippery puddle. After assuring everyone that he was fine, the coach dried off and continued the celebration.

His slip on the court might have quickly faded to a distant memory had it not been for Thurin’s granddaughter, who was in the stands filming the entire event.

“She put it up on Facebook and YouTube and before we knew it, it was everywhere,” Thurin said. “When she and my son told me it ‘went viral’ I didn’t even know what that meant. I thought it was something bad.”

As the viewer count grew, the clip of the “Gatorade Fail” soon captured the attention of news media across the county.

“They showed it on ESPN, the Today Show, Fox News, and even Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Thurin said. “It was just everywhere.”

Always a good sport, Coach Thurin played along and laughed with the folks who were laughing at him.

“Once I realized it wasn’t bad publicity for the college I was fine with it,” he said. “It really was funny.”

It was so funny, in fact, that when his son submitted the clip to America’s Funniest Home Videos, they agreed. The video is expected to be shown this Sunday, May 18, at 6 p.m. CT on ABC. (The clip can also be viewed at http://www.mpcc.edu/videos)

As he prepares for another round in the spotlight, Thurin still isn’t taking himself too seriously.

“I just have to laugh about the whole thing,” he said. “I tell people, ‘If you want to be famous in that manner, just do something stupid.’”

Shyquinn Dix of Stamford Academy Signs Letter of Intent with Knights

Shyquin Dix NPCC KnightsNorth Platte- The North Platte Community College men’s basketball team announced Tuesday the signing of Stamford Academy’s Shyquinn Dix to a Letter of Intent to play basketball with the Knights next year as the second member of the 2014 signing class. Dix comes to North Platte from Stamford, Conn. the same hometown of recently graduated Tim Simmons.

“Shyquinn is a speedy guard with great court awareness,” said coach Barry Woods. “He has the ability to create his own shot off the dribble and create scoring opportunities for his teammates.”

Dix was a First-Team Westchester Independent Athletic Association (W.I.A.A.) selection as senior in which he averaged 25 points, six rebounds and six assists.

“We are excited to welcome Shyquinn to the Knights basketball program,” said head coach Kevin O’Connor. “We are excited with what he brings to the table and can’t wait to get him on campus this fall.”

The 6’1″ 175 pound combo guard scored 30 points five times this season including a high of 38 points. Dix also holds the school record with 43 points scored in a game.

“He is an aggressive defender who loves to pressure opposing guards,” said coach Woods. “He is automatic from 3 pt range but 15 ft and in is really his playground! His ability to play above the rim not only catches opposing teams off guard but makes him a surprising shot blocker as well.”

“A true leader by nature Shy led his team to the W.I.A.A (Westchester Independent Athletic Association) Championship and was named Tournament MVP.”

Rules Committee Wants Stricter Block-Charge Calls

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA men’s basketball rules committee wants a stricter interpretation on charge-block calls next season.

It still must be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel in June.

The most significant change would require defenders to be set in legal guarding position before an offensive player jumps to draw a charge. If the defender moves in any direction, other than vertically to block a shot, it would be called a block.

Other potential changes include expanding the restricted area in front of the basket, calling fouls for defenders who push a leg or knee into the rear end of a player of an opponent and calling a foul on the offensive player if he gained position by pushing back. Those changes would only be used on an experimental basis.

Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament Heads East with Verizon Center Set to Host in 2017

Big-Ten-LogoRosemont, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference announced today that the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will make its first appearance on the East Coast when the 2017 event is held at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. The 2017 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will mark the conference’s 20th annual event and will feature all 14 conference institutions in action from Wednesday, March 8, through Sunday, March 12, with the winner earning the Big Ten’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

“We’re thrilled to announce plans to host the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament in Washington, D.C.,” said Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany. “We have a great amount of respect for basketball in this region of the country and are pleased that we were able to place this tournament at the Verizon Center at this first possible opportunity in March 2017.”

“We’re very excited the Big Ten Conference has selected our nation’s capital as the site for the 2017 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament,” said University of Maryland Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson. “This is yet another example of the Big Ten’s commitment to our region and provides fans of Maryland and all conference teams on the East Coast easier access to enjoy this outstanding event.”

“We are looking forward to and are honored to host the Big Ten Tournament here in Washington, D.C. for the very first time,” said senior vice president and general manager of Verizon Center, David Touhey. “The excitement that surrounds this conference event is unparalleled and with Maryland becoming a part of the fold officially next season, the tournament is sure to have some added local flair here in the nation’s capital.”

The Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament has been held in either Chicago or Indianapolis through the first 17 years of its existence, and returns to Chicago’s United Center for the ninth time in 2015. Indianapolis’ Bankers Life Fieldhouse will host the tournament for the 10th time in 2016. Each of the last two tournaments have been sold out, including a conference record of more than 124,000 fans at the United Center in 2013 and over 111,000 fans at Bankers Life Fieldhouse earlier this year, the largest attendance in Indianapolis. More than 1.6 million fans have enjoyed the tournament since the inaugural event in 1998.

Six different programs have won the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament – Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin – while 10 different schools have advanced to the championship game. History has indicated that any team, regardless of seed, can advance to the title game, as the final matchup has featured teams seeded as high as first, second and third and as low as eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th.

Verizon Center is a 20,000-seat multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue, owned and operated by Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), in downtown Washington, D.C. The arena is home to three professional sports teams, also owned by MSE, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, NHL’s Washington Capitals and WNBA’s Washington Mystics. Hosting an average of 220 events per year, inclusive of games, concerts, family shows and world-class sporting events, Verizon Center sits at the heart of an $8.1 billion redevelopment of downtown that began 16 years ago when the arena opened.

The Big Ten has made a series of announcements highlighting the conference’s increased presence on the East Coast, beginning with the addition of Maryland and Rutgers as future conference members in November 2012.  Last June, the Big Ten announced the acceptance of Johns Hopkins University as the conference’s first sport affiliate member for men’s lacrosse and also announced an agreement to take part in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, sending conference football teams to play at Yankee Stadium on an annual basis. In April, the Big Ten announced that it would open a second office in New York City while securing access to satellite office space in Washington, D.C. And yesterday in Madison Square Garden, the conference unveiled plans to take part in the Gavitt Tipoff Games, an annual early-season men’s basketball series with the Big East named in honor of Dave Gavitt, founder of the Big East and basketball visionary.

Maryland and Rutgers are set to officially join the Big Ten on July 1, 2014, giving the conference more than 520,000 total students and 5.7 million living alumni. The broad-based athletic programs of the 14 institutions will feature almost 9,500 student-athletes on 350 teams in 43 different sports. With the debut of men’s and women’s lacrosse during the 2014-15 academic year, the Big Ten will sponsor 28 official sports. Maryland and Rutgers are already members of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, an academic consortium of Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago that is a model for effective and voluntary collaboration among top research universities. In 2012, Big Ten institutions produced over $9.5 billion in research expenditures.

Conferences to Start Series in 2015-16

Big-Ten-LogoNEW YORK (AP) — The Big Ten and Big East will begin a series of games in 2015 and the multi-day event will be named for the late Dave Gavitt.

The conferences will have a news conference on Monday to announce the deal. The games will take place the first Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the regular season. The games will be played at home sites, four from each conference.

The first series of the Gavitt Tipoff Games will be at the start of the 2015-16 season. The matchups will be announced.

The Big Ten will continue its challenge with the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Gavitt, a Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer, was the founder of the Big East.

ACC/Big Ten Challenge Expands to 14 Matchups this December

ACC Big Ten Challenge ESPNThe 16th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, played over three days from December 1-3, will be highlighted by an expanded format of 14 games – two more than previous Challenges – and the debut of Maryland and Rutgers as members of the Big Ten, and Louisville with the ACC.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the three-day event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioners Cup. All 14 games will also be available via WatchESPN.

Three of the games will feature a showdown between teams ranked in an ESPN.com early preseason top 25 poll: No. 2 Duke at No. 4 Wisconsin, No. 25 Iowa at No. 6 North Carolina and No. 21 Syracuse at No. 24 Michigan. Additional teams in the Challenge that made the poll include No. 7 Virginia, No. 8 Louisville and No. 18 Michigan State.

All 14 Big Ten teams and 14 of the 15 ACC teams will participate in the 2014 Challenge.

The ACC and Big Ten have split the past two events, winning six Challenge games each in 2012 and 2013. In the event of a tie, the Commissioner’s Cup remains with the conference that won the previous year, which was the Big Ten in 2011. The ACC won the first 10 Challenges (1999-2008) while the Big Ten won the next three (2009-2011).

2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge schedule (times and networks will be announced in August):

Date Game
Mon, Dec 1 Nebraska at Florida State
  Rutgers at Clemson
Tue, Dec 2 No. 21 Syracuse at No. 24 Michigan
Ohio State at No. 8 Louisville
  Pittsburgh at Indiana
  NC State at Purdue
  Illinois at Miami (Fla.)
  Minnesota at Wake Forest
Wed, Dec 3 No. 2 Duke at No. 4 Wisconsin

  • ·        Tourney Teams: 13 teams from the two conferences played in the 2014 NCAA Championship: Duke, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Virginia from the ACC, and Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State and Wisconsin from the Big Ten.
  • ·        First Challenge Matchups: Nine of the 14 games will mark first-time Challenge matchups including Syracuse at Michigan, Michigan State at Notre Dame, Iowa at North Carolina, Pittsburgh at Indiana, Illinois at Miami (Fla.) and Nebraska at Florida State, plus three involving a new member of one of the conferences: Rutgers (at Clemson) and Maryland (against former ACC foe Virginia) in the Big Ten and Louisville (against Ohio State) in the ACC. Highlights:
  • ·        Seconds Please: Pittsburgh and Syracuse – two of the three ACC members that played in the Challenge for the first time last season – will look for a second consecutive win in the event (Pittsburgh defeated Penn State and Syracuse beat Indiana).  Notre Dame, which also made a Challenge debut last season, lost to Iowa.
  • ·        A First at 16: Maryland will appear in its first Challenge as a member of the Big Ten after playing in the previous 15 events with the ACC, compiling a 10-5 record. Maryland will host Virginia in the Challenge, marking a rematch of the Terrapins’ 75-69 overtime victory in their final regular-season game as an ACC member.
  • ·        Rubber Match: Duke and Wisconsin will square off in the Challenge for the third time with each winning one game, both as the home team (Duke in 2007 and Wisconsin in 2009).
  • ·        Three’s a Charm: Northwestern and NC State will look for a three-peat over their 2014 Challenge opponents with the Wildcats defeating Georgia Tech in 2010 and 2011 and Wolfpack beating Purdue in 1999 and 2004.
  • ·        Looking for 14: Duke has won more Challenge games than any other team, taking 13 of its 15 matchups with its only two losses coming to Wisconsin and Ohio State.
  • ·        Second Time Around: Minnesota and Wake Forest and Virginia Tech and Penn State will play each other in the Challenge for the second time. Wake Forest (in 2001) and Penn State (in 2007), the home teams in the first meeting as well, won the games.
    • Michigan and Syracuse last met in a 2013 National Semifinal game from Atlanta with the Wolverines defeating the Orange 61-56.
    • Michigan State and Notre Dame will meet for the first time in 35 years when the Spartans defeated the Irish 80-68 in the Regional Finals on its way to the 1979 National Championship.
    • In addition to first-time Challenge games, several of the teams are infrequent opponents: Iowa won two of its three matchups against North Carolina, despite losing the last meeting in 2004; Illinois and Miami (Fla.) have split their two previous meetings, with the Hurricanes winning the last contest in 2012; Florida State holds a 1-0 record over Nebraska with a victory in 2005; and Clemson will look to go 2-0 against Rutgers after a win in 1999.

Dan Dakich & Seth Greenberg Talk ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Scheduling and More

ESPN college basketball analysts Dan Dakich and Seth Greenberg talked with ESPN Front Row about the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, interesting games in the event, scheduling of games and more. Excerpts of the Front and Center Podcast include:

Greenberg on perception of the Challenge as a coach: “As a coach, I looked at it as the Ryder Cup. We wanted to win and we were worried about what that game would mean for our resume. It was one of the few times during the course of the season where I was really locked in on where we were in the standings for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. We had to find a way to win and represent the conference.”

Dakich on Challenge creating top matchups for fans of opposing teams: “This is a little like, back in the day, when you were a kid and they only hadSaturday baseball on and you were waiting to see a team that maybe you read about in a magazine.

Greenberg on scheduling: “Scheduling, in your top five things, has got to be number one or two. The problem is coaches, innately, are afraid to overschedule so they under-schedule. I was as big of an offender as anyone. It depends on where you are in your program and who you are. There are some coaches – their players are buying no matter what. Like a bunch of coaches in these two conferences. But some coaches – they are selling every single day. So having the right schedule is key to them selling, because they have to show progress, show they are winning games to keep their jobs. The ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Maui, preseason NIT – the major preseason events – are so pivotal in helping you build your program or maintain the program.”

Dakich on benefit of Challenge for scheduling“This is one of the great scheduling pieces for schools, regardless of who you play. Obviously, it helps if you’re the better team that’s playing, where you’re playing and if you get a win. Without question it helps scheduling, without question it helps exposure of the league and helps fans.”

Greenberg on the Challenge as a whole: “Every one of these games has a storyline. Each one of these games has a little bit of a personality. It’s not just the Duke’s and the Wisconsin’s.”

Nebraska Women’s Aide Smallwood Heads to Boise St.

Sunny Smallwood Nebraska Boise State HuskersLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska associate head coach Sunny Smallwood is returning to Boise State, her alma mater, to take a similar job on its women’s basketball staff.

Boise State announced Smallwood’s hiring Tuesday. Smallwood spent nine years as an assistant on Connie Yori’s staff at Nebraska, including the past six seasons as associate head coach. Boise State’s head coach is Gordy Presnell.

Smallwood graduated from Boise State in 1983. She began her coaching career by spending seven years at Boise High School from 1983-90. She had coaching jobs at Washington State, Washington and California before joining Yori at Nebraska.

Yori said the search to replace Smallwood is underway.

Sterling Banned for Life by the NBA

Donald-Sterling-NBANEW YORK (AP) — Issuing about the strongest rebuke that he could, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life Tuesday for making racist comments in a recorded conversation, the first step toward forcing a sale of the club and permanently removing Sterling from the league.

Silver also fined Sterling $2.5 million, and again expressed outrage.

“I fully expect to get the support I need from the other NBA owners to remove him,” Silver said.

Several owners immediately chimed in with support of Silver’s decision. Sterling, the league’s longest-tenured owner and someone with an estimated net worth of about $2 billion, did not offer any immediate comment.

The penalties, which were announced only three days after the scandal broke, are the harshest ever issued by the league and among the stiffest punishments ever given to an owner in professional sports. Silver said a league investigation found that Sterling was in fact the person on the audiotapes that were released over the weekend and immediately sent shock waves throughout the game.

“We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling’s views,” Silver said. “They simply have no place in the NBA.”

Sterling acknowledged he was the man on the tape, Silver said.

Sterling still owns the team, but going forward he is immediately barred from attending any NBA games or practices, being present at any Clippers office or facility, participating in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team, or being part of any league business.

It’s unclear how Sterling will respond.

“This league is far bigger than any one owner, any one coach and any one player,” said Silver, who as commissioner has broad powers under what’s typically called the “best interest of the game” clause of the NBA constitution.

But Silver works for the owners, and he will need 75 percent of them — if all 30 teams vote, he’ll need 23 on his side — to force Sterling out of the league completely.

The fine will be donated to organizations dedicated to anti-discrimination and tolerance efforts that will be jointly selected by the NBA and the Players Association, Silver said.

“This has all happened in three days, and so I am hopeful there will be no long-term damage to the league and to the Clippers organization,” Silver said. “But as I said earlier, I’m outraged so I certainly understand other people’s outrage. This will take some time and appropriate healing will be necessary.”

After the announcement, the Clippers’ website had a simple message: “We are one,” it read.

“We wholeheartedly support and embrace the decision by the NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver today. Now the healing process begins,” the Clippers added in a statement.

Sterling’s comments were released over the weekend by TMZ and Deadspin, and numerous NBA owners and players have condemned them. Even President Barack Obama weighed in on the crisis, the first of Silver’s brief tenure as commissioner.

“Commissioner Silver thank you for protecting our beautiful and powerful league!! Great leader!!,” Miami Heat star LeBron James wrote on Twitter.

The league’s investigation started Saturday and players immediately began expressing intense displeasure with the situation, even going so far as to ask Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson to get involved on behalf of the players’ union.

“When one rotten apple does something, or if you see cancer, you’ve got to cut it out really quickly,” Kevin Johnson said at a news conference in Los Angeles, flanked by NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and players like Steve Nash, Tyson Chandler, Luke Walton and Roger Mason Jr., among others. “And Commissioner Silver did that in real time. We’re so proud and thankful for him.”

The sanctions came a few hours before the Clippers were to play Golden State in Game 5 of a tied-up Western Conference first-round playoff series.

“When you get this many Lakers to stand up for the Clippers, you know something big is happening in L.A.,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said. “We are a single team here today, a team not only speaking out for what we’re against — racism, hatred, bigotry, intolerance — but what we’re for. We’re for great basketball.”

Before Silver took the podium, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted out a photo of the NBA Constitution, saying “It exists for a reason.”

Several sponsors either terminated or suspended their business dealings with the team on Monday, though individual deals that some of those companies have with Clippers stars like Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will continue and were not affected. Still, it was a clear statement that companies, like just about everyone inside the league, were outraged.

“Commissioner Silver showed great leadership in banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life,” Magic Johnson, who was referenced on the taped conversation involving Sterling, tweeted shortly after the league’s decision was announced.

Johnson’s role on the tape stemmed from Sterling’s female companion apparently posting a photo of her and the Hall of Fame player on her Instagram account. That photo has since been deleted, but raised Sterling’s ire nonetheless.

“It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?” Sterling asks the woman on the tape.

The issues raised when the tapes were released over the weekend represent just another chapter in Sterling’s long history of being at the center of controversy.

In the past, he’s faced extensive federal charges of civil rights violations and racial discrimination in his business dealings, and some of his race-related statements would be described as shocking.

He has also been sued in the past for sexual harassment by former employees, and even the woman who goes by the name “V. Stiviano” — purportedly the female voice on the tapes at the center of this scandal — describes Sterling in court documents as a man “with a big toothy grin brandishing his sexual prowess in the faces of the Paparazzi and caring less what anyone else thought, the least of which, his own wife.”

Stiviano is being sued by Rochelle Sterling, who is seeking to reclaim at least $1.8 million in cash and gifts that her husband allegedly provided the woman.

Silver said when he first heard the audio, he hoped it had been altered or was fake — but also said that from his 20-year relationship with Sterling, he suspected the voice was his.

“This has been a painful moment,” Silver said, “for all members of the NBA family.”
