Montalvo Commits to Texas State

Ethan Montalvo
Ethan Montalvo

North Platte Community College sophomore guard for the men’s basketball team, Ethan Montalvo committed on Thursday to play at Texas State University.

Montalvo received interest from a number of NCAA Division I schools but made his decision after his visit to the campus in San Marcos, Texas.

Montalvo will go down as one of the greatest players in North Platte Knights history. He was named the Region IX South Sub-Region player of the year this past season to go along with being named to the Region IX First Team and the Region IX All-Tournament team. Montalvo finished his career at NPCC without ever losing at his home gym of McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on the South Campus of North Platte Community College with a 28-0 record. He also ranks fifth all-time on the Knights career scoring list with 1,173 points. Montalvo started every game of his Knights career and tied for the most games played in a Knights uniform at 68.

This past season Montalvo led the Knights to a second-place finish in the South Sub-Region of Region IX and to the semifinals of the Region IX Tournament. He led the team in scoring at 18.9 points per game. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

The Bobcats of Texas State University play in the Sunbelt Conference and finished with an 8-23 overall record this season. Montalvo will likely have opportunities to play against some of the nation’s top talent and top teams while in San Marcos. This past season the Bobcats played Texas out of the Big 12, Utah from the PAC 12 and Larry Brown’s SMU Mustangs.

Fun Tournament, Cloudy Future for NCAA

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The tournament that began with the lure of a billion-dollar bracket will come to a close at a billion-dollar stadium outside of Dallas.

Big as March Madness and the Final Four have become, they’re not big enough to blot out the storm clouds on the horizon. The NCAA has issues looming — among them, the possible unionization of players and a lawsuit challenging the NCAA’s ban on paying players.

If the NCAA loses either case, it would threaten almost everything. That includes its most lucrative and intoxicating event: The basketball tournament, which is celebrating best-in-a-generation TV ratings, a record number of overtime games and a staple of big-name programs — Florida, Wisconsin, Connecticut and Kentucky — that made it through hours of entertaining action en route to the Final Four.

AP Player of Year: Creighton’s Doug McDermott

Doug McDermott Creighton BluejaysARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Doug McDermott, who finished his career at Creighton as college basketball’s fifth-leading scorer, is a near-unanimous selection as The Associated Press’ player of the year.

McDermott is the 11th three-time All-American and first in almost 30 years. He led the nation in scoring with a 26.7 average while shooting 52.6 percent from the field including 44.9 percent from 3-point range.

The 6-foot-8 McDermott averaged 7.0 rebounds in leading the Bluejays to a 27-8 record in their first season as a member of the Big East. He finished his career with 3,150 points.

McDermott received 64 votes Thursday from the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Russ Smith of Louisville got the other vote. The voting ended on Selection Sunday.

Faried Leads Nuggets’ 137-107 Rout of Pelicans

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Kenneth Faried scored a career-high 34 points and added 13 rebounds to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 137-107 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night.

The Nuggets raced out to a 40-26 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back, making 15 of 27 3-pointers compared to 2 of 9 for New Orleans.

The Pelicans also had no answers inside for Faried, who went unchecked numerous times for backdoor dunks and easy short jumpers in surpassing his previous career best, 32 points against the Lakers on March 7.

Tyreke Evans scored 27 points for New Orleans, which was without All-Star forward Anthony Davis in the second half because of back spasms. He finished with six points and three rebounds.

Nuggets reserve Aaron Brooks had 24 points, going 6 of 8 from beyond the arc.

Murren, Tvrdy are Leaving Cornhuskers Women’s Team

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska women’s basketball players Sadie Murren and Hannah Tvrdy have decided to transfer.

Coach Connie Yori said Wednesday that Murren plans to move to an NCAA Division II or NAIA school so she can play next season. Yori said Tvrdy also plans to continue playing basketball.

Murren, a guard from Wahoo, played in 25 games as a sophomore this past season, averaging 2.6 points and one rebound. Tvrdy, a guard from Seward, appeared in 21 games as a freshman and averaged 1.5 points. Murren and Tvrdy each played about eight minutes a game.

Nebraska is set to return four starters from its 2013-14 team that finished 26-7, won the Big Ten tournament and made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Grizzlies Hold on to Beat Nuggets, 94-92

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Zach Randolph had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Mike Conley added 19 points and the Memphis Grizzlies kept pace in the playoff race with a 94-92 win over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night.

The Grizzlies moved into a three-way tie with Dallas and Phoenix for seventh in the Western Conference. Memphis plays both teams once more — at the Suns on April 14 and home against the Mavericks in the regular-season finale two days later.

Courtney Lee also scored 19 points for Memphis, which stopped a two-game skid.

Timofey Mozgov tied a career high with 23 points to go with 10 rebounds and Kenneth Faried had 17 points for the Nuggets, who have dropped four in a row.

Contrast the Name of the Game at Final Four

2014 North Texas Final Four LogoThis year’s Final Four will be filled with contrasts.

One of the biggest will be in the second national semifinal between Kentucky and Wisconsin in North Texas on Saturday.

The Wildcats are athletic, play fast and run past opponents. The Badgers are much more deliberate, hounding teams defensively, then working for the perfect shot.

Kentucky also relies on seven freshmen. On the other side of the bracket is Florida, which has four seniors who had played 400 games before one of the young Wildcats had ever played one.

Wisconsin has a unique big man in long-range-shooting 7-footer Frank Kaminsky, who plays a different game than Florida’s powerful Patric Young.

There also are two coaches who are Final Four regulars and two who will be there for the first time.

Doug McDermott Leads AP All-America Team

Doug McDermott Creighton BluejaysDoug McDermott of Creighton is a unanimous choice for The Associated Press All-America team, the first three-time selection in 29 years.

McDermott is the nation’s leading scorer at 26.9 points a game. The senior is joined on the team Monday by freshman Jabari Parker of Duke and seniors Russ Smith of Louisville, Shabazz Napier of Connecticut and Sean Kilpatrick of Cincinnati.

Smith, Napier and Kilpatrick all played in the first-year American Athletic Conference, the first time a conference had three players on the first team since the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2000-01.

McDermott finished his career with 3,150 points, fifth on the all-time list. He is the 11th three-time AP All-American and the first since Patrick Ewing of Georgetown and Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma from 1982-85.
