NEW YORK (AP) — Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney says the College Football Playoff selection committee could be better served grouping teams in tiers rather than ranking them early in the season.

“It seemed to me there are some rankings that are fairly clear,” Delaney said Wednesday at the Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, sponsored IMG and Sports Business Journal in Manhattan. “But more often than not you have insufficient data points.”

Delaney said he wants to hear from the selection committee first before making any decisions about changes.

Selection committee chairman and Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long says the 12-member committee will meet in April and discuss possible recommendations for changes to the selection process, though he doesn’t expect to suggest wholesale changes.

Alabama, Oregon, FSU, Ohio State are in Playoff

College Football Playoff NCAAGRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) — Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State have been selected to play in the first College Football Playoff.

Alabama is the top seed and will play Ohio State in one semifinal at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Oregon is the second seed and will play Florida State in the other semifinal at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Both games will be played New Year’s Day.

The winners will advance to the national championship game to be played Jan. 12 at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.

The Big 12 co-champs, TCU and Baylor, were left out.

A 12-member selection committee set the field, revealing its selections Sunday morning.

The College Football Playoff is replacing the Bowl Championship Series this season. The BCS matched the top two teams in the country in a national championship game.

Conferences’ Calls with Committee Coming Up

College Football Playoff NCAAThe second of three informational calls between members of the playoff selection committee and officials from each FBS conference are scheduled to be held this week.

Two members of the 12-person committee have been assigned to be point people for each conference. Former Lieutenant General Mike Gould and former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne are the point people for the Pac-12.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said Saturday night the calls are a chance for the conference to give the committee a full picture of what’s going on within a league.

Scott says the conferences provide committee members with stats and injury information.

Archie Manning Steps Away from Playoff Committee

College Football Playoff NCAAIRVING, Texas (AP) — Archie Manning is taking a leave of absence from the College Football Playoff selection committee, which will not replace him this season and go forward with 12 members as it chooses four semifinalists for the first time.

Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock said Manning will have surgery next month to help relieve discomfort he has while moving around and will be unable to travel to the meetings.

The committee will issue its first rankings Oct. 28 and announce the four teams in the national championship field on Dec. 7. The semifinals will be Jan. 1 at the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. The title game will be Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Mike Tranghese will take Manning’s spot to work with Oliver Luck on the Mountain West and Steve Wieberg will join Tom Jernstedt in evaluating the Atlantic Coast Conference.
