Brady Outduels Manning, Patriots Romp 43-21

DenverBroncosFOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady outdueled Peyton Manning, throwing for four touchdowns, and Julian Edelman returned a punt 84 yards for a score in leading the New England Patriots past the Denver Broncos 43-21 Sunday.

The 16th matchup between the all-time great quarterbacks wasn’t particularly competitive after the first quarter.

New England (7-2) won its fifth straight, halting the four-game winning streak for Denver (6-2) in emphatic fashion. Brady has 18 TD passes and one interception in those five victories.

Manning fell to 2-7 at Gillette Stadium and 5-11 overall against Brady, even though he threw for 438 yards and two touchdowns. He has at least two TD passes in 14 consecutive games, an NFL record.

In his 200th career start, Brady passed for 333 yards. He has won 155 of those, the most for any quarterback in that many starts.

Missing Broncos Fan says He had ‘Fill of Football’

DENVER (AP) — A man who disappeared during last week’s Denver Broncos game told police he had “his fill of football” and walked and hitchhiked about 130 miles to a city in southern Colorado.

Paul Kitterman was found safe Tuesday night in Pueblo after police got a tip that he was in the city. Police Sgt. Franklyn Ortega says the 53-year-old looked tired but was otherwise unharmed.

Kitterman told police that he hadn’t watched television in several days and wasn’t aware that people were looking for him.

He was last seen leaving his seat at halftime at Thursday’s game against the San Diego Chargers at Sports Authority Field.

His stepson, Jarod Tonneson, reported him missing, and friends and family scoured the stadium and searched Denver for him. The family has asked for privacy.

DENVER (AP) — Authorities say a Denver Broncos fan who disappeared during last week’s game has been found safe.

Denver Police Sgt. Steve Warneke says 53-year-old Paul Kitterman was found Tuesday night in Pueblo, about 100 miles south of Denver. Warneke did not have any information about Kitterman’s disappearance but says no charges are expected.

Family and friends of Kitterman had been searching for him since Thursday night’s game against the San Diego Chargers at Sports Authority Field.

Jarod Tonneson told investigators his stepfather had not been seen since he left his seat to meet friends during halftime.

The two went to the game with two of their friends after a day spent working and hunting at another friend’s ranch in Kremmling, a small town in the mountains of northern Colorado.

Broncos are Unanimous No. 1 in AP Pro32 Rankings

DenverBroncosNEW YORK (AP) — Going into Sunday’s highly anticipated matchup against the New England Patriots, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos are the unanimous choice as the NFL’s top team.

Denver received all 12 first-place votes Tuesday for the AP Pro32 power rankings, which are decided by a media panel that regularly covers the league.

The Broncos are 6-1 and coming off a 35-21 win over the San Diego Chargers on Thursday.

“The most complete team in the game right now,” Newsday’s Bob Glauber said. “Everything’s working on Peyton’s offense, but now the Broncos have the defense to match. Barring a string of key injuries, looks like another run to the Super Bowl.”

Tom Brady threw five touchdown passes and the Patriots (6-2) overwhelmed the Chicago Bears 51-23 on Sunday, helping New England move from No. 8 to No. 3 in the poll.

“The Patriots have won four in a row to seize control of the AFC East,” Rick Gosselin of The Dallas Morning News said.

Sunday’s game will be the 16th time that Manning and Brady will play against each other.

“Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady never gets old,” Foxsports.com’s Alex Marvez said. “Round 16 comes Sunday in Foxborough.”

Brady is 10-5 against Manning, but Manning won the most recent matchup in the AFC title game last season.

Sunday’s game is the first in NFL history where two starting quarterbacks with at least 150 career regular-season wins each will face off. And Brady will be making his 200th career start.

The Arizona Cardinals, coming a 24-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, moved from No. 5 to No. 2 in the poll.

“That’s no desert mirage Bruce Arians has artfully crafted in Glendale,” Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune said.

The Cardinals (6-1) have a two-game lead in the NFC West entering Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys (6-2), who dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 after Monday’s 20-17 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins’ aggressive defense was effective in slowing down the Cowboys, who had their six-game winning streak snapped.

“Cards D will be blitzing after watching Washington,” said Tony Dungy of NBC Sports.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo left the game with a back injury before returning late in the loss.

“The Cowboys were due for a rough game, but this one could have big implications with Tony Romo’s injury,” ESPN’s Herm Edwards said.

The Eagles dropped from No. 3 to No. 5 after the loss to the Cardinals.

The Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers, Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks rounded out the top 10.

The Lions (6-2) overcame a 21-0 halftime deficit before rallying for a 22-21 win over the Falcons at Wembley Stadium in London. They lead the Packers by a game in the NFC North.

“(Matthew) Stafford continues to shine minus Calvin Johnson, (Reggie) Bush,” Fox Sports’ John Czarnecki said.

Bailey Calls it a Career after 15 Years in NFL

Champ Bailey
Champ Bailey

DENVER (AP) — Champ Bailey has decided to retire after a 15-year NFL career that included 12 Pro Bowl berths, a record for a cornerback.

Bailey’s agent, Jack Reale, said from Atlanta that Bailey had opportunities to play this season but decided to pursue other opportunities.

Those presumably include television.

Bailey spent five years in Washington and 10 in Denver after the Broncos traded running back Clinton Portis to the Redskins for the game’s premiere cover cornerback.

Bailey, 36, was released by the Broncos after the Super Bowl and he signed with the New Orleans Saints. But a left foot injury that sidelined him for all but five games last season continued to bother him during training camp and he was released.

Big Audiences for New CBS Thursday Night NFL Games

DenverBroncosNEW YORK (AP) — CBS’s new Thursday night NFL package drew big audiences despite a string of blowouts.

The Broncos’ 35-21 win over the Chargers on Thursday was the last of seven straight games to air on CBS, with simulcasts on NFL Network. The broadcasts now switch to NFL Network only.

Five of the matchups were decided by at least two touchdowns, including three by more than 30 points.

The seven games still averaged 16.5 million viewers between CBS and NFL Network, nearly double the 8.5 million for last year’s games that aired on NFL Network with simulcasts on local channels in each team’s home market. CBS is available in nearly 60 percent more households than NFL Network.

Manning, Sanders lead Broncos past Chargers 35-21

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — Emmanuel Sanders waited six long weeks to join the list of players who have caught a touchdown pass from Peyton Manning. Now, he has four in less than a week.

Manning and Sanders connected for a trio of touchdowns Thursday night in the Denver Broncos’ 35-21 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

With the Chargers’ banged-up secondary double-teaming red-hot receiver Demaryius Thomas, Sanders caught TD throws of 2, 31 and 3 yards. The last one followed Chris Harris Jr.’s interception of a flustered Philip Rivers.

Rookie running back Juwan Thompson added two TD runs as the Broncos (6-1) tightened their grip on the AFC West over the Chargers (5-3), who lost their second straight game.

Manning finished 25 of 35 for 286 yards. Sanders caught nine passes for 120 yards, and Ronnie Hillman added 109 yards on 20 carries.

Broncos Release Safety Boyett Following Arrest

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos have released safety John Boyett from their practice squad a day after he was charged with assault, theft and harassment.

Police said Boyett, 24, assaulted a cab driver, stole a shovel from a construction site and tried to hide from officers by covering himself in mulch early Wednesday in Greenwood Village, according to court documents.

Police said Boyett drunkenly head-butted and punched a cab driver they had hailed for him after he became belligerent at a bar.

Authorities said he also repeatedly slammed his head into a patrol car window while yelling and spitting after telling arresting officers to contact his boss, GM John Elway.

Manning Passes Favre’s TD Mark in Broncos’ Big Win

Peyton-Manning-Denver-Bronc

DENVER (AP) — Leave it to Peyton Manning to plan his own prank.

After breaking Brett Favre’s NFL record with his 509th touchdown toss, Manning’s teammates played keep-away with his milestone memento, and Manning played right along.

Manning went into the Sunday night showdown two TDs shy of Favre’s record of 508 and finished with four touchdown passes on 22-of-26 passing for 318 yards in just three quarters of work.

He surpassed Favre with an 8-yard strike to Demaryius Thomas just before halftime in Denver’s emphatic 42-17 thrashing of the San Francisco 49ers.

As he went to retrieve the ball, his teammates had some fun.

Thomas tossed the ball over Manning to Emmanuel Sanders, who lobbed it to Wes Welker. From there, Welker dished it back to Sanders, who flipped it to Julius Thomas — all of Manning’s favorite targets getting into the act as Manning ran around like a kid trying to get his lunch sack back.

“Those guys are all great athletes, and my vertical leap isn’t what it used to be. I haven’t played keep-away since I was 8 years old,” Manning said. “That is something I will always remember.”

The Broncos (5-1) had actually talked about doing something like that but Manning said he was surprised his teammates went through with it.

He shouldn’t have been, Demaryius Thomas said, revealing that Manning actually had them practice it Friday.

“It’s easy. You did that when you were kids,” Thomas said. “It’s like keep the ball away from the guy in the middle.”

Come to think of it, Manning said he deserved to get picked on “based on my non-graceful play when I tripped on the play before.”

Manning finally got the ball along with congratulations from his teammates and coaches. The souvenir won’t end up on Manning’s mantle, however — the Pro Football Hall of Fame has a nice spot all ready for it.

Manning had a hand in most of the game’s biggest moments, from Emmanuel Sanders’ first TD catch as a Bronco to Wes Welker’s record-tying 39-yard catch and run against the exasperated 49ers (4-3).

“I’m not sure what their coaches do,” 49ers safety Eric Reid said. “They probably don’t have to do much. When he’s out there on the field, he recognizes the defense and makes audibles, he does it all. You’re playing against a coordinator when he’s out there. He’s definitely one of the best, if not the best ever.”

Here were some other highlights on this historic night:

DOMINANT DEMARYIUS: The Broncos’ big receiver didn’t stop at the record-breaking TD. He added a 40-yard touchdown grab in the second half and set up another score with a 49-yard catch.

After getting off to a slow start this season, Thomas has come on strong. He caught eight passes for 171 yards, giving him an eye-popping 27 catches for 521 yards receiving and five TDs over the last three games.

That’s the best three-game stretch by a receiver in Broncos history.

“He’s one of the first guys that I really spent a lot of time throwing with when I first got here,” Manning said. “It looks like the hard work paid off for both of us and for our team. I have a great appreciation for how hard he works and the way he plays the game. It’s been a lot of fun to be his teammate.”

The feeling is mutual.

“He’s the best that ever played the game,” Thomas said.

GROUND GAME: The Broncos have finally found some footing in their ground game even without Montee Ball, who is out with a groin injury.

Ronnie Hillman, coming off his first career 100-yard game, gained 74 yards on 14 carries (5.3-yard average) to go with four receptions for 29 yards. He scored on a career-long, 37-yard run and plowed over rookie linebacker Chris Borland, subbing for Patrick Willis (toe), for a 1-yard score.

“Once you start getting in there and you start getting a role and getting comfortable with everything, you kind of get in a rhythm,” Hillman said. “Every running back needs rhythm. I don’t care what anybody says. I’m starting to get a rhythm, and it’s starting to pay off a little bit.”

WARE & MILLER: Broncos pass-rushers DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller are in a sacks race, and together they posted five of the six sacks of San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick.

Ware had three, giving him seven for the season, and Miller had a trio, giving him nine, so far.

“We talked about don’t rush timid this week,” Ware said. “We have to get pressure on the quarterback, and the offense was able to really get points on the board and make them one-dimensional where they would have to pass the ball. That’s when me and Von and the others really open up and rush the passer.”

LINE DANCE: Kaepernick had no time to operate behind a patchwork offensive line, spending most of his night on the run or on his back.

The 49ers were already missing left guard Mike Iupati (concussion). In the third quarter, center Daniel Kilgore was carted off the field with what might be a broken left ankle.

“The Broncos played a great game. They were good and better in every phase,” coach Jim Harbaugh lamented.

Linebacker Patrick Willis was among several nicked-up Niners who sat this one out.

“I’m not going to say the score would have been any different or that I would have stopped that offense by any means,” Willis said. “It hurt because I want to be out there with my guys fighting and going through that tough time with them.”

NOTES: Manning reached the career TD milestone in his 246th regular-season game. Favre needed 302. … The Broncos lost LB Steven Johnson (ankle) and CB Omar Bolden (possible concussion).
