Broncos Promote Shaquil Barrett from Scout Squad

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have promoted linebacker Shaquil Barrett from their practice squad to take the roster spot of injured linebacker Danny Trevathan.

The Broncos also signed defensive end Gerald Rivers to their practice squad Wednesday.

Barrett is an undrafted rookie from Colorado State who spent the last six weeks on Denver’s practice squad.

Barrett started 35 of 38 games at CSU, collecting 246 tackles, 18 sacks, 32 1-2 tackles for loss, three interceptions, six pass breakups, seven forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and three blocked kicks.

Trevathan is on recallable IR with a broken bone near his left kneecap. He’s not eligible to return until mid-December.

Rivers, undrafted out of Ole Miss, played in two games for the Rams and Jaguars last season.

Broncos are No. 1 in AP Pro32 Rankings

DenverBroncosNEW YORK (AP) — As he nears yet another milestone, Peyton Manning has the Denver Broncos back as the top team in the NFL.

Denver received eight first-place votes Tuesday for the AP Pro32 power rankings, which are decided by a 12-member media panel that regularly covers the league.

Manning threw three touchdown passes in a 31-17 win Sunday over the New York Jets and is two touchdown passes shy of Brett Favre’s record of 508 regular-season TD throws. Manning can set the mark Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers.

“Peyton creeps ever closer to Brett Favre’s record of 508 career TDs with three more against the Jets,” Newsday’s Bob Glauber said. “Three to go for another slice of history for the great one.”

San Diego, which moved to 5-1 after rallying past the winless Oakland Raiders 31-28, moved up a spot to No. 2 and received three first-place votes.

The Broncos and Chargers will meet for the first time this season on Thursday, Oct. 23.

“(Philip) Rivers ready for Peyton showdown,” Fox Sports’ John Czarnecki said.

After facing San Diego, Manning will travel to Foxborough, Massachusetts, to take on Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on Nov. 2.

“Peyton Manning is bracing for a Murderer’s Row — 49ers, Chargers and Patriots,” Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune said.

The surging Dallas Cowboys (5-1), who have won five in a row and are tied for first in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles, received the other first-place vote.

“The Cowboys not only won in Seattle, but they were the more physical team against the Seahawks,” said Jenny Vrentas of The Monday Morning Quarterback. “Both are rare feats.”

The Eagles stayed in fourth place after their 27-0 rout of division rival New York Giants.

“Philadelphia eased concerns about its offense with a dominant win over its division rival,” ESPN’s Herm Edwards said.

The Seattle Seahawks dropped from No. 1 to No. 5 after their 30-23 loss to the Cowboys. The San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and the Patriots rounded out the top 10.

NBC’s Tony Dungy was impressed with Arizona after its 30-20 win over Washington, which gave the Cardinals (4-1) a half-game lead over the 49ers in the NFC West.

“If (Carson) Palmer can stay healthy, they can make some noise,” he said.

The Patriots have scored 80 points in the past two games and host Rex Ryan’s reeling Jets on Thursday night.

“The Patriots are more than just Tom Brady,” Rick Gosselin of The Dallas Morning News said. “They lead the NFL defensively with seven fumble recoveries and 14 takeaways.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Oakland Raiders and the Jacksonville Jaguars filled the bottom three spots in the poll.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan’s broken leg will keep him out longer than expected.

The Broncos placed Trevathan on recallable injured reserve Tuesday.

That means the team’s top tackler from last year can’t practice until Nov. 26 and isn’t eligible to play in a game until Denver visits San Diego on Dec. 14.

Trevathan reinjured his left leg Sunday in his second game back from a broken bone under his kneecap. On Monday, coach John Fox said this latest injury was to the top and side of his knee.

Trevathan’s teammates were told Monday he’d be out six weeks, about the same timeline for his first injury. Now, it’ll be eight weeks.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan has another fracture near his left kneecap and is expected to miss several weeks.

Trevathan was hurt Sunday in his second game back from a broken bone below the left kneecap.

Coach John Fox said Monday this latest injury is above and to the side of the same knee but isn’t related to the initial injury, which occurred Aug. 12.

Fox wouldn’t say when he expected Trevathan back on the field. Trevathan returned in the sixth week after his first knee injury.

Trevathan was hurt when he was run over by two Jets players on a screen pass to Eric Decker on the second play from scrimmage Sunday. Brandon Marshall replaced him in Denver’s 31-17 win.

Manning Throws for 3 TDs, Broncos Beat Jets 31-17

DenverBroncosEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Peyton Manning threw three touchdown passes, leaving him two shy of Brett Favre’s career mark, and the Denver Broncos beat the New York Jets 31-17 on Sunday.

Julius Thomas caught two of Manning’s scoring passes, and Ronnie Hillman ran for 100 yards on 24 carries for the Broncos (4-1). Demaryius Thomas finished with 10 catches for 124 yards and a TD.

Manning has 506 career touchdown passes, and could tie or break Favre’s record next Sunday at home against San Francisco.

The Jets (1-5) had a chance to tie with less than a minute left. But with the ball at the 1, Geno Smith was intercepted by Aqib Talib, who returned it 22 yards for a sealing touchdown that sent New York to its fifth straight loss.

Eric Decker caught a touchdown pass for the Jets in his first game against his former team.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the penalty says that Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas was fined $8,268 for his chop block on Arizona Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the fine hadn’t been announced yet by the NFL. ESPN first reported the fine, the first of Thomas’ four-year career.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians had called the chop block Sunday the worst play he’s seen in his 37 years of coaching and hoped Thomas would be suspended for as long as Campbell is out.

Campbell is expected to miss several weeks with a strained right MCL.

Thomas, who leads the NFL with seven TD catches, expressed remorse for hurting Campbell.

Favre Says He’s Glad Manning Will Break His Record

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Brett Favre says he couldn’t be happier to see Peyton Manning on the brink of breaking his NFL record of 508 touchdown throws.

Manning has 503 heading into Denver’s road game Sunday against the New York Jets.

Favre told The Associated Press he’s thrilled for Manning, who’s coming off a career-best 479-yard passing performance against Arizona that included four TDs.

That made Manning the second QB to reach 500 and moved him within striking distance of Favre’s record.

In a phone interview from his home in Kiln, Miss,. Favre told the AP, “I’m glad it’s Peyton that’s doing it. I think a lot of Peyton. I know him well. I know his family well. His dad was one of my idols.”

Julius Thomas Says Chop Block Wasn’t Intentional

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Julius Thomas said Monday that he never intended to hurt Calais Campbell despite Arizona coach Bruce Arians calling the Pro Bowl tight end’s chop block the “dirtiest play I’ve ever seen” in 37 years in the NFL.

Thomas said he and tackle Ryan Clady would never try to hurt anyone and the play Sunday that sent Arizona’s star defensive end out with a sprained right MCL was a matter of miscommunication, not malice.

Broncos coach John Fox passionately defended Thomas, too. He said he’s been in the league just two years less than Arians and “it’s not the dirtiest play I’ve seen this year, let alone in 35 years.”

Manning’s 500th TD Leads Broncos past Cards 41-20

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning joined Brett Favre in the NFL’s most exclusive of clubs with his 500th touchdown pass Sunday when the Denver Broncos handed the Arizona Cardinals their first loss, 41-20.

Manning finished with four TD throws, moving him within five of Favre’s record 508.

Manning found tight end Julius Thomas twice in the end zone, including the touchstone touchdown, a 7-yard dart in the first quarter.

Yet, it was wide receiver Demaryius Thomas who had the biggest day for the Broncos (3-1) with eight catches for a team-record 226 yards and two TDs. That beat Shannon Sharpe’s mark of 214 yards set against Kansas City in 2002.

Arizona (3-1) lost for the first time and saw quarterback Drew Stanton leave with a possible concussion.

Peyton Manning Throws 500th Career TD Pass

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncDENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning has thrown his 500th career touchdown pass, joining Brett Favre as the only members of the exclusive club.

Manning threw a 7-yard dart to tight end Julius Thomas to give Denver a 7-3 lead over Arizona in the first quarter Sunday. Thomas has caught six of Manning’s nine TD throws this season.

Manning reached the mark in his 244th career regular season game, 49 fewer games than it took Favre.

It was Manning’s 101st TD pass since coming to Denver in 2012 following his tearful goodbye in Indianapolis, where he played his first 13 NFL seasons before sitting out all of 2011 following neck fusion surgery.

Manning figures to surpass Favre’s record of 508 TD throws later this month.
