Broncos Rookie Cornerback Comes Up Big in Debut

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — On back-to-back August afternoons, Denver Broncos rookie cornerback Bradley Roby was torched by Peyton Manning’s long touchdown passes to Demaryius Thomas.

The first time, Roby trudged off the field knowing his technique, leverage and his reaction time could have been better.

The next day, same play, same result.

This time, Roby plodded back to the sideline in frustration.

He knew he’d done all he possibly could have and yet he’d still come up short.

The following week, Roby was a different player entirely.

New Broncos Incentive for Great Play: Nice Parking

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — John Elway’s Bentley with the six-figure price tag was replaced by Jacob Tamme’s old white Volvo clunker in the prime parking spot outside the Denver Broncos headquarters Wednesday.

Peyton Manning revealed the reason — but didn’t know whose car it was.

When talking about tight end Julius Thomas winning his first AFC Offensive Player of the Week award, Manning mentioned the Broncos’ new parking policy.

The three Broncos who are named the team’s players of the week — one each on offense, defense and special teams — get to park up front where Elway and coach John Fox used to park their cars.

Broncos Waive WR Nathan Palmer

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have waived wide receiver Nathan Palmer from their active roster and signed tight end Dominique Jones to their practice squad.

Jones takes the place of tight end Gerell Robinson, who was signed to Cleveland’s active roster Tuesday.

Jones (6-foot-3, 270 pounds) is a third-year player who has appeared in 12 career games, including three starts, with Indianapolis (2012-13) and Kansas City (2013), totaling three receptions for 42 yards. He was with Buffalo this preseason.

Palmer is a second-year pro who played in all four of Denver’s preseason games and caught one pass for 7 yards. He was promoted to the team’s active roster following Wes Welker’s suspension. But he was inactive for Denver’s game against Indianapolis.

Former Denver Broncos great Gonsoulin dies at 76

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — Austin “Goose” Gonsoulin, the former Pro Bowl safety for the Denver Broncos and a member of the team’s Ring of Fame, has died. He was 76.

Kathy Levingston of Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, Texas, says Gonsoulin died Monday while in hospice care in nearby Beaumont. She did not have a cause of death but says Gonsoulin was battling prostate cancer.

He was a member of the first Broncos team, fielded in 1960. The team said on its website that he still holds the Broncos record for single-season interceptions with 11. He was a five-time Pro-Bowler. He also was named to the second-team AFL All-Time Team.

Gonsoulin was a standout at Baylor before being drafted in 1960.

Services for the native of Port Arthur, Texas, are scheduled for Saturday.

Broncos Hold on to Beat Colts 31-24

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning sure didn’t need Wes Welker in this heart-pounding opener. He threw three touchdown passes to tight end Julius Thomas in the first half and the Denver Broncos held on to beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-24 on Sunday night.

In his second try, Manning beat his old team and joined Brett Favre as the only quarterbacks to beat each of the current 32 NFL franchises.

The Broncos raced out to a 24-0 lead thanks to Thomas, then turned to their revamped defense to fend off a furious comeback attempt by Andrew Luck, who was working wonders behind a patchwork offensive line.

Luck brought the Colts within a touchdown when he found Hakeem Nicks for a 9-yard scoring strike with 3:26 remaining. But Indy’s last drive stalled at midfield when rookie Bradley Roby broke up a fourth-and-6 pass to Reggie Wayne.

Welker is serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. But if there’s an offense that can weather the loss of the NFL’s premier slot receiver, it’s the Broncos.

Welker, Mathis, Gordon Among Suspended

A solid quartet to put on any NFL field. Except that they are among 29 players suspended by the league heading into the 2014 season.

Among those big names, Cleveland’s Gordon got the longest ban, sidelined for the entire season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. His absence might be the most damaging, too, and not only for its length. A Pro Bowl wide receiver, Gordon was the only established target on the Browns, who figured to be an also-ran even with him in the lineup.

That Gordon’s case lingered for weeks while appeals were heard, and was not decided until just before the season, didn’t help the Browns, either.

Broncos Promote WR Nathan Palmer

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have promoted wide receiver Nathan Palmer from their practice squad to take the place of suspended slot receiver Wes Welker.

The Broncos also signed guard Ryan Miller to their practice squad. Palmer and Miller were among the final cuts last weekend.

Palmer is a second-year pro who was on Denver’s practice squad at the end of last season. He played in all four preseason games and caught one pass for 7 yards.

Miller also is in his second NFL season. The Colorado native played eight games as a rookie for Cleveland in 2012.

Earlier this week, the Broncos signed long snapper Kevin McDermott to their practice squad after guard Vinston Painter was signed to the Browns’ active roster.

Reports: Broncos WR Welker Suspended for 4 Games

Wes Welker Denver Broncos FootballENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Wes Welker is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy, according to published reports.

ESPN reported the violation had to do with amphetamines.

The Broncos didn’t immediately return a message from The Associated Press requesting comment Tuesday.

NFL Media reported Welker was notified Tuesday he had lost his appeal, which was heard two weeks ago.

Welker returned to practice Monday for the first time since suffering a concussion Aug. 23. It was his third concussion in 10 months.

Welker caught a career-best 10 TD passes last year.

Welker Returns to Practice Following Concussion

Wes Welker Denver Broncos FootballENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Wes Welker returned to practice Monday for the first time since sustaining a concussion in an Aug. 23 preseason game against the Houston Texans.

The Denver slot receiver ran short routes during the 20-minute viewing period open to the media.

Welker’s concussion was his third in 10 months. He got hurt on a hard hit from D.J. Swearinger that prompted Peyton Manning to swear at the swaggering safety.

That earned the five-time MVP the first taunting penalty of his career along with an $8,268 fine.

Welker caught 73 passes for 778 yards and a career-high 10 TDs last season despite missing the last 3 1-2 games. He also had 18 grabs for 160 yards and a TD in the playoffs.

Deeper Denver Broncos Cut Vickerson, Ihenacho

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have released nine-year veteran defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson and third-year safety Duke Ihenacho, a starter last season who had nine tackles in the Super Bowl.

They also let go of third quarterback Zac Dysert, who made the 53-man roster last year.

The Broncos added plenty of depth following their Super Bowl loss to Seattle, and Vickerson and Inhenacho paid the price.

Slow to recover from a dislocated hip that sidelined him down the stretch in 2013, Vickerson was unable to fend off free agent Marvin Austin.

Ihenacho was the odd man out in a crowded secondary that features free agent acquisition T.J. Ward at strong safety.

Teams must trim rosters to 53 active players by 4 p.m. ET.
