ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning seems to be having a lot more fun this summer.
He’s still grinding through training camp like always but he’s also showing a loosey-goosey side that he rarely flashed in Indy or in his first two seasons in Denver.
One morning, he’s doing a dorky dance to “Rocky Top” during stretch time at Broncos headquarters — dancing like nobody’s watching even though he knows everybody is.
Another day he’s taking snaps from Brandon Stokley’s 10-year-old boy on the side during special teams drills.
Or letting his twin toddlers tackle him after a practice at Sports Authority Field.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos leading tackler Danny Trevathan is out six to eight weeks after fracturing his left knee during a particularly intense padded practice Tuesday.
The Broncos said their weakside linebacker has what’s called a medial tibial impaction fracture but, fortunately, no torn ligaments.
Trevathan, who didn’t put any weight on his left leg after being carted off the field during team drills, is expected to return to the Broncos right around their bye week in late September, meaning he’d only miss three regular season games, at most.
He was hurt on an 11-on-11 run play in which center Will Montgomery rolled over him.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Weakside linebacker Danny Trevathan, the Denver Broncos’ leading tackler, has been carted off the field with a left knee injury.
Trevathan was injured during 11-on-11 drills toward the end of Tuesday morning’s workout.
There was no immediate word on the extent of his injury or how much time he’ll miss.
Earlier, Trevathan was involved in one of several scrums that erupted between the offense and defense during team drills.
Trevathan is coming off a breakout season in which he led the Broncos with 124 tackles and picked off three passes. He also led the team with two dozen tackles in the playoffs.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — There was a time when Brock Osweiler wanted to seek out Aaron Rodgers to pick his brain about how he waited so patiently for his shot while serving an extended apprenticeship under Brett Favre.
Peyton Manning’s protege, however, decided to figure it out for himself.
After all, mimicking one great quarterback is plenty.
Although he has more mobility than the five-time MVP, Osweiler does his best imitation of Denver’s star quarterback on the few occasions he gets onto the football field.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are content to wait for running backs Montee Ball and C.J. Anderson to heal.
Coach John Fox said Saturday he doesn’t plan to bring in any free agent running backs in light of Ball’s appendectomy or Anderson’s concussion.
“We are always looking to improve the team. That goes on 24/7, 365, really, but right now there is nothing pressing,”
Fox says the Broncos feel good about the backs they have.
That group includes just one back who’s ever played in an NFL game, Ronnie Hillman, plus three undrafted free agents in Juwan Thompson, Brennan Clay and Kapri Bibbs and first-year pro Jerodis Williams, who played for Minnesota in last year’s preseason.
DENVER (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks’ preseason opener against the Denver Broncos devolved into a game of flag football, which wasn’t unexpected in light of the NFL’s renewed emphasis on illegal contact and holding.
Surprisingly, only a handful of the 25 penalties called in Denver’s 21-16 win Thursday night fell into those categories — and all of those were whistled on the Broncos.
Many believe the NFL’s crackdown is in direct response to the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” defense and the Super Bowl champs’ habit of pushing, pulling, tugging and shoving wide receivers.
Most were for old-fashioned transgressions, some stemming from the bad blood that developed between the teams in the wake of Seattle’s 43-8 shellacking of the Broncos in the Super Bowl.
DENVER (AP) — The Super Bowl teams slogged through a preseason opener delayed by lightning and a flurry of flags Thursday night before linebacker Steven Jackson’s end zone interception of Terrelle Pryor’s pass sealed the Denver Broncos’ 21-16 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
In between a 46-minute delay, both starting offenses put together long touchdown drives that ate up more than 9 minutes and were kept alive by a wave of yellow flags.
Altogether, there were 25 accepted penalties, 13 on Seattle and a dozen on Denver.
Ronnie Hillman’s 1-yard TD run capped Denver’s 14-play, 61-yard drive in which Peyton Manning completed 9 of 11 passes for 63 yards and the officials threw six flags, including one for offsetting penalties.
DENVER (AP) — When the Seattle Seahawks visit the Broncos for a preseason kickoff Thursday night, they’ll see a Denver defense that was reshaped with them in mind — along with a team still smarting over all that trash talk during and after the Super Bowl.
The Broncos responded to that 43-8 shellacking by adding thumpers DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward and Aqib Talib in free agency.
Bruised leg permitting, Ware will make a cameo appearance in what promises to be an intense start to the preseason at Sports Authority Field before the starters give way to backups for the bulk of the night.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Marvin Austin was an afterthought in the Denver Broncos’ $110 million defensive makeover this offseason.
Long after fellow free agents DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward signed their mega deals and posed with their orange jerseys, Austin slipped into town in May and quietly began his latest comeback.
The fourth-year defensive tackle who signed a one-year, $570,000 contract might just prove to be general manager John Elway’s latest rummage-sale find to produce a big payoff.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos starting running back Montee Ball is sidelined with appendicitis.
Ball was scheduled for an appendectomy Monday afternoon.
Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson shared snaps with the first-string offense at practice.
The Broncos haven’t said how long Ball will be out, but it’s a possibility that he’ll miss the entire preseason.
In a tweet, Ball said, “I appreciate the get well wishes everyone! I will be ok and come back stronger than ever!!”
Ball, who set an NCAA record with 83 touchdowns at Wisconsin, assumed the No. 1 running back job this offseason. He was Knowshon Moreno’s backup last year and ran for 559 yards and four touchdowns in 2013.
DENVER (AP) — Prosecutors have agreed to drop charges against Denver Broncos safety T.J. Ward in exchange for community service.
A judge accepted the deal on Monday during a brief hearing in Denver.
Ward previously pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault and disturbing the peace charges for allegedly throwing a glass mug at a female bartender at PT’s All Nude Club in May.
Ward told the judge he understood the conditions of the program but said nothing else.
A judge will review the status of the case on Oct. 31.
The deal comes as the Broncos get ready for their preseason opener Thursday night against Seattle.
