Aldridge has 28 and Blazers beat Nuggets 116-100

Denver_NuggetsPORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — LaMarcus Aldridge scored 28 points and the Portland Trail Blazers handed the Denver Nuggets their fifth straight loss with a 116-100 victory on Sunday night.

Wesley Matthews added 21 for the Blazers, who have won three of their last four.

Ty Lawson had 18 points for Denver after missing the team’s 110-101 loss at home to Cleveland on Friday night because of a sore left ankle. Kenneth Faried led the Nuggets with 19 points.

Portland was coming off a 106-102 loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles the day before but showed no sign of fatigue, leading by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter.

The Nuggets closed within 102-94 on Lawson’s driving layup with 3:11 left, but Damian Lillard hit a 3-pointer that extended it to 111-98 with just over a minute left to seal it.

Nuggets F Darrell Arthur Suspended 1 Game

NEW YORK (AP) — Denver Nuggets forward Darrell Arthur has been suspended one game without pay for shoving Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters in the back as he went up for a layup.

NBA President of Basketball Operations Rod Thorn made the announcement in a news release Saturday night.

The play occurred Friday night with 4.4 seconds remaining in the first quarter of Cleveland’s 110-101 victory in Denver. Arthur was called for a flagrant 2 foul and ejected.

The league says he will serve his suspension Sunday when the Nuggets play at Portland.

James helps Cavs to 110-101 Win over Nuggets

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — LeBron James had 22 points and 11 assists on a poor shooting night by Cleveland’s Big Three, helping the Cavaliers hold on for a 110-101 win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday.

James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving were a combined 19 of 45 from the floor. The Cavaliers had seven players score in double figures and finished 1-2 on their road trip.

Cleveland wound up with 25 assists two nights after the team tied a franchise record with just six in a loss at Utah.

Randy Foye scored 28 points for the Nuggets, who have dropped four in a row.

Kings Beat Nuggets 131-109 for 4th Straight Win

Denver_NuggetsSACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — DeMarcus Cousins had 30 points and 11 rebounds, Rudy Gay scored 29 and the Sacramento Kings beat the Denver Nuggets 131-109 Wednesday night to extend their best start in more than a decade.

Darren Collison added 10 points and eight assists, and Carl Landry had 18 points off the bench to help Sacramento to its second win over Denver in three days and fourth straight overall following a season-opening loss to Golden State.

The Kings improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2001-02, when they won the Pacific Division and grabbed the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They haven’t been back to the postseason since 2007.

Ty Lawson had 13 points and nine assists for Denver (1-3).

Sacramento scored 40 points in the first quarter, led by as many as 36 and had six players in double figures.

Collison Helps Kings Hold Off Nuggets 110-105

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Darren Collison scored 21 points, including three free throws in the final 16.2 seconds, and the Sacramento Kings held off the Denver Nuggets 110-105 on Monday night.

DeMarcus Cousins added 19 points and Reggie Evans grabbed 14 rebounds as the Kings started the season 3-1 for the first time since 2010-11. Sacramento showed no signs of fatigue after beating the Clippers the day before in Los Angeles.

Collison secured the win by hitting two free throws with 8.7 seconds remaining.

The Nuggets had seven players in double figures, led by Arron Afflalo and JaVale McGee with 16 points apiece. Wilson Chandler scored 12 of his 14 in the fourth quarter.

Short-Handed Thunder Beat Nuggets 102-91

Denver_NuggetsOKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Perry Jones and Serge Ibaka each scored 23 points to help the short-handed Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Denver Nuggets 102-91 on Saturday night for their first victory of the season.

The Thunder, already without MVP Kevin Durant for at least a month with a broken right foot, announced that star point guard Russell Westbrook had successful surgery on his broken right hand Saturday morning and also will miss at least a month.

The Thunder led 29-17 at the end of the first quarter, earning a standing ovation, and held off a late rally.

Kendrick Perkins scored 17 points and Steven Adams added 13 for the Thunder.

Ty Lawson scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half for the Nuggets.

Nuggets Open with 89-79 Win over Pistons

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Kenneth Faried scored 22 points and had 17 rebounds and the Denver Nuggets opened the season Wednesday night with an 89-79 win over Detroit, spoiling the debut of Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy.

Aaron Afflalo, in his second tour with Denver after being acquired in an offseason trade with Orlando, had 15 points. Timofey Mozgov added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, coming off a 36-46 campaign marked by losses of key players to injuries, including Danilo Gallinari, JaVale McGee, J.J. Hickson and Nate Robinson, though all four are healthy now.

Josh Smith, Detroit’s leading scorer last season, had 25 points to lead the Pistons. D.J. Augustin added 15 points.

The Pistons managed only one basket in the last three minutes.

Nuggets Waive Forward Quincy Miller

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — The Nuggets have waived forward Quincy Miller after failing to find a trade partner for the 6-foot-10 third-year pro.

The Nuggets drafted Miller out of Baylor in 2012 and he appeared in 59 games over the last two seasons for Denver. He averaged 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 13.8 minutes. He played in 52 games last season.

In seven preseason games this year, Miller, 21, averaged 3 points and 2 boards.

DENVER (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations says Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried has agreed to a four-year, $50 million contract extension.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night on condition of anonymity because the team has yet to announce the deal.

Denver had until Oct. 31 to negotiate a new contract for Faried or he would have become a restricted free agent next summer.

The high-flying Faried averaged 13.7 points and 8.6 rebounds last season.

Faried also was a member of the U.S. team that captured a gold medal at the Basketball World Cup last month. He was asked by coach Mike Krzyzewski to be one of the leaders on the American team, a role he’s hoping to bring to the Nuggets this season.

Nuggets’ Hickson Suspended 5 Games by NBA

JJ-Hickson-Denver-NuggetsNEW YORK (AP) — Denver Nuggets center/forward J.J. Hickson was suspended for five games without pay by the NBA on Wednesday for violating the terms of the anti-drug program.

Hickson averaged 11.8 rebounds and 9.2 rebounds in 69 games last season, his first with Denver. He has played six seasons in the NBA with Cleveland, Sacramento, Portland and Denver, averaging 10.1 points and 7.2 rebounds.
