KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — First baseman Eric Hosmer and the Kansas City Royals avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $13.9 million, two-year contract.

Hosmer gets $5.65 million this year under Wednesday’s agreement and $8.25 million in 2016.

The 25-year-old hit .270 for the AL champions with 35 doubles, nine homers and 58 RBIs. He won his second straight Gold Glove.

He made $3.6 million last year and had asked for $6.7 million when the sides exchanged proposed arbitration salaries last month. The Royals had offered $4.6 million.

Kansas City has not gone to a hearing since Dayton Moore became general manager in 2006.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — First baseman Eric Hosmer was activated from the disabled list and first-round draft pick Brandon Finnegan was promoted from Double-A Northwest Arkansas in a flurry of roster moves by the Royals on Monday.

Hosmer, who had been out with a fractured right hand, was 3 for 10 in two rehab games for Triple-A Omaha. Designated hitter Billy Butler had started in his place.

Finnegan had a 1.33 ERA in three minor league appearances.

The Royals also purchased the contract of outfielder Carlos Peguero from Omaha and recalled left-hander Casey Coleman, infielder Johnny Giavotella, outfielder Lane Adams and catcher Francisco Pena from minor league affiliates.

In corresponding moves, left-hander Chris Dwyer and right-hander Blake Wood were designated for assignment.

The Royals open a series against Texas on Monday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer has been cleared to begin swinging a bat after missing the past month with a stress fracture in his right hand.

Hosmer had another round of X-rays before the Royals’ game against the Yankees on Monday, and they showed enough progress that he can begin taking dry swings. The hope is that Hosmer can ramp it up to hitting off a tee and in the cage in the next week.

Hosmer says he expects to be back for the final couple weeks of the regular season, and that he plans to be in the starting lineup when he returns. Designated hitter Billy Butler has been having his best stretch of the season while filling in at first base.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer will be out three to six weeks with a stress fracture of the third finger of his right hand.

He aggravated a previous injury on a check swing in the fourth inning of a 6-3 victory Thursday night over the Minnesota Twins. Billy Butler hit for Hosmer in the sixth and X-ray’s revealed the fracture.

Hosmer was hit by a pitch by Jon Lester on July 20 at Boston and did not start six of the next seven games.

“Very frustrating, bad timing,” Hosmer said.

Hosmer, who will go on the disabled list, had a 16-game hitting streak before Lester’s pitch hit him.
