Elway: Broncos Want Manning Back, Still Awaiting Word

Peyton-ManningINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The ball is in Peyton Manning’s court.

Broncos executive John Elway said as much Thursday at the NFL scouting combine, making it clear he’s still waiting to hear whether the 38-year-old quarterback wants to return for a fourth season in Denver.

Manning and Elway met last week in Denver, but Manning left without a definitive answer about his return.

Elway said he wanted No. 18 back. He was less clear about what financial terms Manning might return under.

Asked if there was a holdup because of contract considerations — Manning is scheduled to make $19 million next season — Elway said he didn’t like to discuss contracts, but that he does believe Manning will be the Broncos quarterback next season.

Chiefs’ Andy Reid Using Cane after Knee Replacement Surgery

Andy Reid Kansas City ChiefsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid vowed Wednesday that he will be ready for the start of the season despite needing a cane to get around the scouting combine following knee replacement surgery.

Reid skipped attending the Senior Bowl because of the procedure, which occurred after the Chiefs finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs. He joked that he “won’t be starting on PUP” — the physically unable to perform list for players that are recovering from injuries.

“I’ll be ready to go,” the Chiefs coach said.

Reid is entering his third year in Kansas City. But the team he takes to the field this fall figures to be much different than the one he inherited. The Chiefs have numerous holes to fill through free agency and the draft, and the combine is one step in that process.

Chiefs Begin Clearing Space by Releasing WRs Avery, Jenkins

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs released wide receivers Donnie Avery and A.J. Jenkins on Tuesday as they began to clear roster and salary cap space ahead of what could be a busy offseason.

Kansas City is facing the loss of All-Pro linebacker Justin Houston and center Rodney Hudson in free agency. The Chiefs are expected to meet with Houston’s representatives about a long-term deal on Wednesday in Indianapolis, and the possibility remains of using the franchise tag on him.

Either way, the Chiefs could be facing some difficult financial choices if they want to keep Houston or Hudson, or both. Releasing Avery and Jenkins saved the Chiefs nearly $5 million, though it makes targeting a wide receiver in free agency or the draft a priority.

Study: Coaching Education Can Cut Risk of Football Injuries

fox-footballINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A study released Monday concludes that youth football coaches who are educated in the sport make the game safer for players.

The Indianapolis-based Datalys Center for Sports Injury Research and Prevention collected data from 2,108 football players ages 5 to 15 last fall. It found that players who competed for coaches who been trained in USA Football’s “Heads-Up Football” program were 34 percent less likely to get a concussion in practice and 29 percent less likely to get a concussion in a game.

The study was commissioned by USA Football, the sport’s national governing body.

Researchers also monitored blows to the head of 72 players ages 9 to 15. The organization monitored injuries of 100 teams in 10 youth leagues and four states.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos coach Gary Kubiak has finished building his staff by hiring Marc Lubick as assistant wide receivers coach and Samson Brown as assistant defensive backs coach.

Kubiak, who replaced John Fox, has a 22-man staff that includes nine offensive coaches, seven defensive coaches, two special teams coaches and four strength and conditioning coaches.

Lubick is the son of longtime Colorado State University coach Sonny Lubick. He’s coached in the NFL six seasons and in the college ranks for nine. Last season he coached wide receivers at Vanderbilt after spending the previous four seasons on Kubiak’s staff in Houston.

Brown is in his fifth season in the NFL. He spent the last two years as assistant defensive backs coach with the Buffalo Bills.

NEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made $35 million in 2013, according to tax returns submitted by the league.

The NFL on Friday released the amount Goodell earned in salary, bonus and pension compensation. Goodell made $35.1 million in 2012, with an additional $5 million in incentive pay and $4.1 million pension payment from the 2011 lockout year that was paid in 2012.

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, a member of the league’s compensation committee, said in a statement that compensation packages are reviewed annually. The committee will “conduct a thoughtful review and make a determination of 2014 compensation in March.”

Goodell was heavily criticized this season for his handling of the domestic violence case of former Baltimore Raven Ray Rice.

The league’s revenues have approached $10 billion and its TV ratings dominate all other programming.

Unnecessary Roughness Rule Changed for High School Football

fox-footballINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The National Federation of State High School Associations has changed a football rule involving unnecessary roughness to minimize the risk to players.

The association said Friday that its board of directors has approved revising the rule to ban unnecessary roughness against defenseless players. The group also has revised its spearing rule. That rule now bans players contacting an opponent at or below the shoulders with the crown of their helmets.

Brad Garrett is chair of the NFHS’s football rules committee. He says minimizing risk to players must be “at the forefront of the game.”

The association says its 2013-2014 survey shows football is the most popular high school sport for boys with more than 1.09 million players. About 1,800 girls played football during the 2013-2014 season.
