LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska defensive backs coach Charlton Warren is leaving the Cornhuskers to take a similar job at North Carolina.

A person with knowledge of Warren’s hiring told The Associated Press on Friday that Warren would replace cornerbacks coach Dan Disch, who was fired. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the North Carolina has not made an announcement.

The departure of Warren is a blow for new Nebraska coach Mike Riley. Warren was the only assistant retained from Bo Pelini’s staff, and he was considered one of the Huskers’ best recruiters.

Riley said Warren told him he is taking a job at another university, but Riley did not name the school.

The statement below was made by the University of Nebraska football coach Mike Riley:

“Charlton Warren has informed me of his plans to take a similar coaching position at another university. This is an opportunity that Charlton feels is right for him and his family, and I respect his decision. We appreciate the valuable role Charlton has played in our transition to the University of Nebraska and wish him and his family nothing but the best. Charlton is an outstanding man and a bright, energetic football coach with a great future ahead of him in this profession.

“We will search for a talented teacher, coach and recruiter to fill the open position on our defensive staff. This is a high priority, but we will take the necessary time to find the individual who is the right fit to help lead the young men in the University of Nebraska football program.”

Big Ten Drops Bowl-Revenue Sanction against Penn State

Penn State Nittany Lions LogoHARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Another sanction against Penn State from the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal is going away.

Big Ten officials said Thursday that the conference will restore Penn State’s share of the conference bowl revenues next season after a three-season ban.

The school says the financial hit from losing three years of bowl revenues is about $9.6 million. Next season, it’ll get an estimated $6.6 million.

The Big Ten’s decision follows the NCAA’s agreement last month to drop its remaining sanctions, including restoring 112 football wins it had stripped and reinstating Joe Paterno as the winningest coach in major college football history.

Last fall, the NCAA agreed to reinstate Penn State’s full complement of scholarships and end a four-year bowl ban a year early by letting the team participate in post-season play.

Helmet Cams, Sideline Computers Coming to College Football

NCAA-Football-CollegeThe NCAA football rules committee wants to experiment with helmet cameras, wireless communication between coaches and players on the field and the use of computers on the sideline.

The committee announced Wednesday after two days of meetings in Indianapolis that it was hoping to gather data about expanding the use of technology in college football with an eye toward implementing rules as soon as possible.

The NCAA says several conferences proposed experimenting with these rules and committee chairman and Air Force coach Troy Calhoun suggested the technology be used in some December bowl games during the 2015 season.

The committee also passed a proposal to adjust the ineligible downfield rule from 3 yards to 1 yard past the line of scrimmage and to allow for eight-man officiating crews.

Nebraska Football Games Will Have a New Radio Home in Omaha

Husker Sports NetworkOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska football games and other university sports will be broadcast on a new group of radio stations in Omaha starting next fall.

Journal Broadcast Group and university multimedia partner IMG announced a five-year affiliate agreement Tuesday. Stations involved are KXSP (590 AM), KKCD (105.9 FM) and KEZO (92.3 FM).

The contract with the current affiliate, KFAB (1110 AM), expires June 30.

KXSP will carry football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball. Football games also will be carried on KEZO. KKCD will air women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball games when there is a scheduling conflict.

KFAB had been the university’s longtime Omaha radio partner. Except for 1996 to 2001, KFAB has aired football games since the 1920s.

Terms of the new agreement weren’t announced.

Pace of Play Not Expected to be College Football Rules Issue

NCAA-Football-CollegeThe NCAA coordinator of college football officials says he does not expect pace of play to be a major topic when the rules committee meets this week.

Rogers Redding said Monday the use of technology on the sideline will be a focus during committee meetings Tuesday and Wednesday.

Redding said the conversation about pace of play has been “muted.”

“There hasn’t been an awful lot of concern about that this year,” Redding said. “We’ll probably talk about it in the meeting, but I don’t anticipate any changes in the rules as a result of that.”

The NCAA football rules committee does not usual stir up much controversy, but last year it made headlines and talk-radio fodder for weeks with its proposal aimed at slowing down the game and limiting the number of plays for safety reasons.

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt has been appointed to the College Football Playoff selection committee.

Hocutt will replace Oliver Luck, the former West Virginia athletic director who has moved to a position with the NCAA. Luck was the Big 12’s pick for the selection committee last season. Each of the five power conferences in FBS has one current athletic director on the 13-member committee.

Hocutt grew up in Sherman, Texas, and was a linebacker at Kansas State from 1991-94. He has previously been athletic director at Ohio University and Miami. He took over at Texas Tech in 2011.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby nominated Hocutt, and he was approved by the other commissioners who make up the playoff management committee.

Bills to Sign Incognito, Key Figure in Bullying Scandal

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have agreed in principle to sign Richie Incognito, the offensive guard who has been out of football since 2013 after being one of the central figures in the Miami Dolphins’ bullying scandal.

The Bills announced the move in a two-paragraph release Saturday night.

Incognito has nine seasons of NFL experience, and briefly played for the Bills in 2009. He has not played since being suspended and missing the final eight games of the 2013 season.

The discipline came after an NFL investigation determined Incognito and two other Dolphins offensive linemen engaged in persistent harassment of teammate Jonathan Martin, who left the team. Martin spent last season with San Francisco.

Randy Gregory Planning to ‘Turn a lot of Heads’ at Combine

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Former Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory says he’s going to “turn a lot of heads” at the NFL scouting combine in two weeks.

Gregory is a two-time, All-Big Ten first-team pick and is considered one of the best pass rushers available for the draft.

Gregory said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday that he would be most comfortable as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. Nebraska typically used a four-man front, with Gregory occasionally dropping to linebacker.

Gregory said he knows some draft analysts are concerned about his strength and ability to maintain weight. His goal is to bench press 225 pounds 20 times at the combine. He said he expects to weigh in at about 250 pounds. He sometimes was 20 pounds lighter at Nebraska.

Rece Davis Taking over as Host of ESPN’s ‘College GameDay’

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Rece Davis is taking over as host of ESPN’s “College GameDay,” with Chris Fowler focusing on calling the Saturday prime-time games.

Davis has signed a contract extension through 2021, the network said Thursday.

“I’ve cared deeply about college football my entire life,” Davis said in a release from ESPN. “As a result, I’m humbled and grateful to join the brilliant men and women who have built GameDay into the sport’s defining show.”

Fowler had hosted “GameDay” since 1990. Last season, he became ESPN’s lead play-by-play announcer for college football, replacing Brent Musburger.

That meant sometimes hosting “GameDay” in one location in the morning and traveling to another site for ABC’s “Saturday Night Football.” Analyst Kirk Herbstreit does the same, but the double duty is more challenging for a play-by-play announcer because of the extra preparation involved.

Still, Fowler initially said he wanted to continue with both roles, as he did in 2014. Thursday’s announcement allows ESPN to keep Davis and give him a broader role, with Fowler still in a prominent position.

“It was important to me that GameDay be left in excellent hands,” Fowler said in the release. “It certainly will be with someone as talented and dedicated as Rece Davis.”

Davis, who joined the network in 1995, will no longer call Thursday night games.

“This agreement reflects our belief that Rece Davis is one of the very best in the industry,” said John Wildhack, ESPN’s executive vice president for programming and production.
