Watt gets 2 Turnovers, Dances in Friendly Pro Bowl

Pro Bowl NFLGLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Some of the best played football on Sunday, a gentler, friendlier version of the game.

The Pro Bowl never has intensity. That will come a week from now, boiling over when Seattle meets New England on the same field.

Few moved very fast, no one flattened a quarterback and there were no bone-jarring hits in Team Irvin’s 32-28 victory over Team Carter.

But everyone seemed to have a good time, and there were a few plays to remember.

J.J. Watt intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble and danced for the crowd. Jimmy Graham dunked over the crossbar twice after TD catches — this time with no penalty.

Odell Beckham Jr.’s diving grab at midfield might have been the day’s most impressive play.

AP Explains: What Makes the Super Bowl such a Big Deal

Super Bowl XLIXPHOENIX (AP) — The Super Bowl, at its most basic level, is a game that determines the NFL championship.

It has become so much more since the first game was played in 1967.

Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial holiday in the United States, a day when families and friends to gather to watch the game, the over-the-top commercials and big-name musical acts at halftime.

The game and the two weeks of hype, parties and the annual Media Day leading up it have turned the Super Bowl into a spectacle along the lines of the Olympics or World Cup, a royal wedding or papal celebration, the Oscars or Grammys.

A rundown of what makes the Super Bowl so special:

___

FABRIC OF AMERICA

Baseball is known as America’s pastime, but football is woven into the country’s fabric.

The NFL’s rise came at the same time as television’s and turned into a $9 billion enterprise. The NFL season has far fewer games than the other major North American sports — 16 compared to 162 in baseball — which makes every game an event.

But once the season gets to the Super Bowl, many of the fans don’t get a chance to go. Tickets started around $800 for this year’s and most are snapped up by corporations, creating an American version of the Prawn Sandwich Brigade, those European soccer fans who attend games for the corporate hospitality rather than cheer on the teams.

___

WHERE IT’S PLAYED

Cities bid for the right to host the Super Bowl and many use the game as a rallying point to build a new stadium and bring in revenue.

The game is rotated every year, usually to a warm-weather city or one with a domed stadium.

Last year’s game was played in the stadium the New York Jets and Giants share in East Rutherford, New Jersey — the first outdoor game in a cold-weather city — and future games will be in San Francisco, Houston and Minneapolis.

Arizona’s University of Phoenix Stadium, site of this year’s games, has a retractable roof and a field that is wheeled outside so the grass can get sunlight.

___

TELEVISION AUDIENCE

The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched events in the world, routinely drawing more than 80 million viewers every year since 1990. The game has eclipsed 100 million viewers each of the past five years, with a record 111.5 million watching Seattle roll over Denver a year ago.

Millions more watch the game around the world.

___

THE COMMERCIALS

Super Bowl commercials have become a part of the show, luring in non-sports fans who might not otherwise watch the game.

The trend of making get-them-talking commercials started in 1984, when Apple created a memorable 1-minute spot based on George Orwell’s 1984. Since then, the commercials have included talking animals and babies, supermodels and Clydesdales, sophomoric humor and tear-jerking moments.

The rate for this year’s game is $4.5 million for a 30-second spot.

___

GAMBLING

According to the American Gaming Association, Americans will place $3.8 billion in illegal bets on the Super Bowl this year. Nevada sports books hauled in a record $19.7 million in legal wagers on last year’s game.

The Super Bowl also has some of the most exotic proposition bets anywhere.

For this year’s game, bettors can put money on the what color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach, how long Idina Menzel will take to sing the Star-Spangled Banner, whether Patriots coach Bill Belichick will smile on camera during the game and the color of pop star Katy Perry’s hair when she performs during the halftime show.

___

HALFTIME SHOW

The halftime show has become must-watch TV instead of just a throw-in with the game.

This year’s halftime show will feature Perry and rock guitarist Lenny Kravitz, extending a long line of big-name performers that has included Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Prince, Madonna and Bruno Mars with the Red Hot Chili Peppers last year.

And, of course, everyone remembers Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” while performing with Justin Timberlake in 2004.

___

MEDIA DAY

Originally set up for media members to have access to every player on both teams, the annual Media Day has become an event in itself, a spectacle filled with sometimes-wacky questions and attention-grabbing stunts.

In 2008, a reporter from Mexico’s TV Azteca wore a wedding dress and asked New England’s Tom Brady to marry her. Another media day featured a reporter showing up with a puppet of Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu, calling it his son.

Thousands of media members attend Media Day and fans can buy tickets to watch the festivities for $28.50.

___

THE PARTIES

Outside of the Oscars or Grammys, there may not be a bigger place for celebrity parties than the Super Bowl.

The parties before the big game are almost all star-studded and this year’s bashes include DirecTv Saturday Night with Rihanna, Nelly performing at Playboy’s and Drake at Bootsy Bellows’ Pop Up. There also will be live performances in the Phoenix area by Snoop Dogg, Imagine Dragons, Enrique Iglesias with Pitbull and Zac Brown Band.

Millions of fans also gather in households around the country to watch the game together.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah rushed for 73 yards and added 40 receiving while leading the North to a 34-13 victory over the South on Saturday in the Senior Bowl.

The Cornhuskers’ No. 2 career rusher won MVP honors, and the running backs and defenses came up with the some of the biggest plays in a game that showcases senior NFL prospects.

Texas cornerback Quandre Diggs and Miami-Ohio’s Quinten Rollins had third-quarter interceptions for the North.

Abdullah, an Alabama native, made the most of his 11 touches. Minnesota running back David Cobb gained 69 yards on 11 carries, including a 4-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.

The top passers were Baylor’s Bryce Petty of the North and Colorado State’s Garrett Grayson on the South. Petty was 9 of 13 for 123 yards with an interception. Grayson completed 8 of 15 passes for 118 yards.

Pro Bowl Officials to use Tablets for Video Reviews

Pro Bowl NFLGLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The NFL will test having game officials use tablets for video reviews in Sunday’s Pro Bowl

Coaches and players for the first time have been using the Microsoft Surface tablets on the sidelines all season to look at photos of previous plays.

Having the referee look at replays to determine if calls were correct could lead to eliminating the official going “under the hood” for reviews.

An NFL staffer will wear a backpack containing wireless radios, and will hold a Surface Pro 3 tablet and headphones during the game.

When a video review is needed, that staffer will hold the tablet and the referee will don the headphones. It is hoped this will speed up the entire process.

The league also will debut use of in-game video on the tablets for coaches and players to review during the Pro Bowl.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Bill Kollar, who has 26 years of experience coaching defensive lines in the NFL, is the Denver Broncos’ new D-line coach.

Kollar spent the last six seasons in Houston, five of them under new Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak. With the Texans, he worked with stars J.J. Watt and Mario Williams.

He’s also served as defensive line coach for Buffalo (2007-08), St. Louis (2001-05) and Atlanta (1990-2000).

Kollar spent eight seasons in the NFL with the Buccaneers and Bengals, who drafted him in the first round out of Montana State in 1974.

Players Union Files Grievance Against NFL on Conduct Policy

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — The NFL players union has filed a grievance against the league over changes to its personal conduct policy.

League officials said Friday they want players and others in the NFL to be held to stricter standards. The NFL said in a statement: “Clearly, the union does not share that belief.”

Officials for the NFL Players Association did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The union and the league have been at odds over the personal conduct policy since both groups began navigating the Ray Rice domestic violence case.

Union officials have said they want to open up the personal conduct policy to collective bargaining to negotiate changes, while NFL executives have said the current contract gives them the leeway to make necessary changes.

The NFL said in its statement Friday that it consulted with the union, plus current and former players and other experts before making changes.

All 3 NFL Games in London Next Season to Have Early Kickoffs

nfl_logo2011-medLONDON (AP) — All three NFL games in London next season will have early afternoon kickoffs in the U.K., meaning fans back in the U.S. will have to get up early to watch.

The NFL announced Thursday that the Nov. 1 game between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs at Wembley Stadium will start at 2:30 p.m. local time — 9:30 a.m. on the U.S. East Coast.

Early kickoffs had already been announced for the Oct. 4 game between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins (2:30 p.m. local; 9:30 a.m. EDT) and the Oct. 25 game between the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars (1:30 p.m. local; 9:30 a.m. EDT).

The first NFL game at Wembley played with an early afternoon kickoff was this season’s game between the Lions and Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 26. All other London games had kicked off in the early evening, translating to a 1 p.m. start in the U.S.

NFL UK managing director Alistair Kirkwood says “our fan research has shown overwhelming support for early kickoffs.”

The timing also allows the teams to fly home later the same day to begin their bye weeks.

Pelini Hires Longtime Huskers Assistant Ron Brown

Ron BrownLongtime Nebraska assistant football coach Ron Brown is joining Bo Pelini’s staff at Youngstown State as associate head coach and running backs coach.

Brown said Thursday he wanted to stay at Nebraska but never was in line for a job on new coach Mike Riley’s staff.

Brown has attracted national attention for using his position as a platform for expressing his Christian faith. He was lauded in 2011 for leading a prayer at midfield at Penn State after the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal broke. He was also criticized in 2012 for testifying to the Omaha City Council against an ordinance to protect gay and transgender people from discrimination.

Brown came to Nebraska in 1987 when Tom Osborne hired him to coach wide receivers.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Defensive lineman Avery Moss has transferred to Youngstown State a month after Nebraska denied his appeal seeking re-admission.

Moss confirmed in a text message to The Associated Press on Wednesday that he was enrolling at the Ohio school. Bo Pelini was named Youngstown’s head coach after his firing from Nebraska in November.

Moss was banned from the Nebraska campus for exposing himself to a woman at a convenience store in 2012. He pleaded no contest and was fined $500.

Moss, from Tempe, Arizona, had hoped Nebraska would lift his ban and allow him to re-enroll this month. He continued to live in Lincoln and worked at a car dealership.

The Lincoln Journal Star first reported Moss’ move to Youngstown, where he’ll be eligible to play this fall.

Williams Hired as Nebraska Assistant Coach

Keith Williams at Tulane

Keith Williams has been hired as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska, completing Coach Mike Riley’s first full-time coaching staff with the Cornhuskers.

Williams will coach the Nebraska wide receivers and joins the Husker program from Tulane University, where he has spent the previous three seasons.

“Keith Williams is a tremendous addition to our Nebraska staff, and brings a great background in coaching wide receivers,” Riley said. “With Keith’s addition, I’m excited about the completion of our full-time staff. It is a mix of quality individuals who bring great skills as teachers, coaches, mentors and recruiters.”

Williams, who had eight former receivers in the National Football League in 2014, is eager to join Riley’s staff at Nebraska.

“I am really excited to join Coach Riley’s staff and thankful for the opportunity he has given me at Nebraska,” Williams said. “I have had a great respect for Coach Riley’s career from afar, and I’m ecstatic to be here at Nebraska and be a part of this program. This is one of those places that if you pay any attention to college football, you know about Nebraska. I have seen that ‘N’ my whole life.”

In his role on the Tulane staff, Williams coached the Green Wave wide receivers the past three seasons, and was also the out-of-state recruiting coordinator in 2014. This past season, the top target in the Green Wave passing game was true freshman Teddy Veal, who led Tulane with 40 receptions in his first season under Williams’ direction.

Williams was instrumental in the success of Tulane wideout Ryan Grant who completed his career in 2013. Grant finished his career with 196 receptions for 2,769 yards. Grant topped 75 receptions in each of his final two seasons, and produced a pair of 1,000-yard receiving campaigns. Grant spent the 2014 season with the Washington Redskins.

In 2013, Williams’ receivers combined for nearly 1,900 receiving yards and 18 receiving touchdowns, helping the Green Wave to a 7-6 record and trip to the New Orleans Bowl.

Before his time at Tulane, Williams served as the receivers coach at Fresno State for three seasons. While with the Bulldogs, Williams coached three All-Western Athletic Conference receivers and helped Fresno State to two bowl appearances.

Williams also has NFL experience, spending the 2008 season with the San Diego Chargers in a minority internship coaching position. He was also an assistant coach at San Jose City College, San Jose State and Solano (Calif.) College.
