Pelini Ripped Nebraska’s AD in Last Talk with Players

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — On the day he was introduced as Youngstown State’s new head coach, the ugly nature of Bo Pelini’s departure from Nebraska was revealed.

Pelini, who was fired on Nov. 30, lambasted Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst in a profanity-filled talk during his final meeting with his players. The Omaha World-Herald on Wednesday reported that it obtained an audiotape of Pelini’s address to the players on Dec. 2 at a Lincoln high school.

The university said in a statement that if the audiotape is authentic, “it only reaffirms the decision that he should no longer be a leader of young men at Nebraska.”

The World-Herald reported that Pelini used two vulgarities for female genitalia in reference to Eichorst. There were other instances of profanity on the audio.

The Associated Press left messages for Pelini and Youngstown athletic director Ron Strollo.

Nebraksa Responds to Expletive-Laced Pelini Comments

The University of Nebraska has responded to comments made by former football coach Bo Pelini at the final meeting he had with players at Lincoln North Star High School on December 2. The statement fro NU can be seen below:

The University of Nebraska is in receipt of what appears to be a transcript of remarks delivered by former football coach Bo Pelini. These remarks to student-athletes were allegedly made during a non-official team meeting at a local high school, held two days after his termination. At this time, the University cannot authenticate the transcript nor do we have an audio version of the remarks.

If these comments were, indeed, spoken by Mr. Pelini, we are extremely disappointed, but it only reaffirms the decision that he should no longer be a leader of young men at Nebraska. His habitual use of inappropriate language, and his personal and professional attacks on administrators, are antithetical to the values of our university. His behavior is consistent with a pattern of unprofessional, disrespectful behavior directed by Mr. Pelini toward the passionate fans of Nebraska, employees of the university and, most concerning, our student-athletes. This behavior is not tolerated at the University of Nebraska and, among many other concerns, played a role in his dismissal.

Any assertions that the campus or athletics administration was not supportive of our student-athletes and our football program are flat-out false and are contradicted by the facts.

We are grateful that the new leadership in our football program is aligned with our values and will establish that you can be successful at Nebraska and that you can do it with integrity and class.

Broncos put Danny Trevathan on Injured Reserve

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have placed linebacker Danny Trevathan on injured reserve and waived tight end Dominique Jones.

Trevathan was Denver’s leading tackler last year but appeared in just three games this season because of a trio of injuries to his left knee.

He was originally hurt in a training camp practice on Aug. 12 and reinjured the leg Oct. 12. After spending eight weeks on the club’s recallable IR list, Trevathan dislocated his left kneecap Sunday against San Diego.

Jones played four snaps against the Chargers after being brought up from the club’s practice squad because of injuries at his position.

Huskers Continue Bowl Prep Through Finals Week

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team practiced for 90 minutes inside the Hawks Championship Center on Tuesday afternoon in preparation for the Holiday Bowl. Interim Head Coach Barney Cotton spoke to the media after practice.

“Defensively they are probably a little bit sharper than us,” Cotton said. “Offensively we kind of reversed roles, but it was still a good day. It’s just I think we were a little sharper offensively the first three days of last week. We’ll come back tomorrow and do a better job.”

Cotton also said that defensive end Randy Gregory is “fully cleared as of today” for the bowl game. Cotton added that the odd practice times were selected during Finals Week so that “hopefully we could get 90 percent of our guys here this week.”

Cotton also talked about the depth at center and said it was “going well.”

“Paul Thurston, who finished the game up at Iowa, right now would be the leading candidate to start,” Cotton said. “We are also looking at Zach Hannon. We’ve moved Dylan Utter there from the backup left guard spot to also playing center. They are all three getting pretty equal reps right now.”

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck also spoke to the media and talked about USC’s defense.

“They are pretty good up front, well coached, they run to the ball well and are good athletically in the back end,” Beck said. “They are different defensively than they have been, they are more of an odd team. They have done a nice job and are pretty salty.”

The Holiday Bowl between No. 25 Nebraska and No. 24 USC is set for Saturday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. (CT) on ESPN.

NFL Announces 32 Nominees for Walter Payton Award

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has announced the 32 players eligible for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

Among the nominees are Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, Dallas running back DeMarco Murray, San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers, Kansas City linebacker Tamba Hali and Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis, who was a finalist last year.

Named for the late Hall of Fame running back, the award recognizes a player’s community service and performance on the field.

Each team nominates a player, and the NFL Foundation donates $1,000 to a charity of his choice. The three finalists will receive an additional $5,000 contribution. They will be announced next month.

The winner will receive a $20,000 donation in his name to his favorite charity. The announcement will be made during the NFL Honors show Jan. 31, the night before the Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

Abdullah and Gregory Named AP All-Americans

Lincoln – Nebraska senior I-back Ameer Abdullah and junior defensive end Randy Gregory were each named Associated Press All-Americans on Tuesday, as Abdullah was a second-team pick and Gregory was a third-team selection.

The honor was Abdullah’s fourth over the last week, after also being named a second-team running back honoree by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, CBS Sports.com and Scout.com.

Gregory was tabbed as a third-team All-American after earning first-team All-Big Ten honors each of the past two seasons. An impressive feat considering Gregory missed nearly four games in 2014.

A senior from Homewood, Ala., Abdullah rushed for 1,523 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2014, including four 200-yard rushing games. Abdullah also became Nebraska’s all-time leader in all-purpose yards, while ranking second on the school’s career rushing yardage list.

Abdullah was one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Award, and has also received All-Big Ten honors for the past three seasons. Abdullah was a third-team AP All-American in 2013.

One of the most feared pass rushers in the Big Ten, Gregory had 50 total tackles, including seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss, while adding a team-high 16 quarterback hurries. He also blocked two field goals, broke up three passes and had an interception. Gregory is the first two-time all-conference honoree on the defensive line at Nebraska since Ndamukong Suh in 2008 and 2009.

Pelini Goes Home as Youngstown St Coach (Updated with Official Announcement)

Former Nebraska coach Bo Pelini has been hired to be the next coach at Youngstown State, an FCS school in his hometown.

The school announced the move on Tuesday.

The 47-year-old Pelini is a Youngstown, Ohio, native and graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School in the Northeast Ohio city.

He was fired last month after eight seasons at Nebraska. Pelini was 67-27 with the Cornhuskers, but never won a conference championship.

Jon Gruden Agrees to Contract Extension with ESPN

CHICAGO (AP) — Jon Gruden has agreed to a contract extension with ESPN through the 2021 NFL season.

ESPN announced the deal Monday night.

Frequently mentioned for vacant NFL and college coaching openings, the Super Bowl-winning coach joined ESPN in May 2009 as an analyst. He teams with play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico on “Monday Night Football” and appears on other ESPN programs.

“There’s no place I’d rather be,” Gruden said.

ESPN’s NFL rights deal also runs through 2021.

Gruden became the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl at 38 when he led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the title after the 2002 season. He also made a Super Bowl appearance with the Oakland Raiders.

Trevathan’s Season over after Latest Knee Injury

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan’s season is over after tests revealed a dislocated left kneecap.

It’s the third time since August that Trevathan has injured his left knee.

His latest injury occurred in the fourth quarter of Denver’s 22-10 win at San Diego. It was his first game since fracturing a bone under the kneecap against the New York Jets on Oct. 12. And that injury came two months after he originally fractured his left leg in training camp.

The news was better on linebacker Brandon Marshall, who sprained his right foot and is expected to be back for the playoffs.

Peyton Manning was still fighting off an illness and getting treatment for a strained quadriceps, which he blamed on dehydration Sunday.
