Ohio State Earns Return Trip to Big Ten Football Championship Game

Big-Ten-Championship-FootbaRosemont, Ill. – With victories on Saturday, Ohio State secured a berth in the fourth annual Big Ten Football Championship Game and also clinched at least a share of the Big Ten East Division title while Wisconsin earned at least a share of the Big Ten West Division crown.

Ohio State defeated Indiana today to secure at least a share of a third straight division title and will make a second consecutive title game appearance. The Buckeyes have won a Big Ten record 23 consecutive conference games and improved to 7-0 in the Big Ten and 10-1 overall. Michigan State earned a home win over Rutgers today to improve to 6-1 in conference and 9-2 overall and still maintains hopes for a share of the division title. But Ohio State clinched a berth in the championship game based on its victory over the Spartans on Nov. 8. Both teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 29, with Ohio State hosting Michigan and Michigan State playing at Penn State.

Wisconsin collected a road victory at Iowa today to earn at least a share of the division title, the program’s second division crown, and improved to 6-1 in the Big Ten and 9-2 overall. Minnesota posted a road triumph at Nebraska today to move to 5-2 in conference and 8-3 overall and still has an opportunity to secure a share of the division title and a trip to the Big Ten Football Championship Game. The Badgers host the Gophers next Saturday, Nov. 29, with the winner representing the West Division in the title game against the Buckeyes.

The 2014 Big Ten Football Championship Game will be played on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium and will be broadcast nationally on FOX with kickoff set for 8:17 p.m. ET. The winner will earn the Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Trophy and a chance to play in one of the six bowls that comprise the College Football Playoff, including the Rose Bowl Game.

Broncos Shuffle Backfield on Eve of Showdown

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have shuffled their thin backfield on the eve of their showdown with the Miami Dolphins. They promoted Jeremy Stewart from their practice squad and waived rookie Kapri Bibbs.

Stewart gives the Broncos’ backfield more experience with Ronnie Hillman (foot) and Montee Ball (groin) sidelined.

The other two running backs are second-year pro C.J. Anderson and rookie Juwan Thompson.

Stewart is a third-year pro from Cal who appeared in 17 games during his first two NFL seasons in Oakland. The Broncos signed him to their practice squad Oct. 8.

Stewart has one career TD run on 27 carries for 103 yards and 10 catches for 68 yards. He also plays special teams and owns a 17.3-yard average on eight kickoff returns.

Green Says He’s Ready to Return to Lineup

Virgil Green

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The tight end turnstile keeps spinning in Denver, where Julius Thomas is hurting but Virgil Green is on the mend.

Both are listed as questionable for Sunday’s showdown with the Miami Dolphins (6-4).

Thomas leads the league with a dozen TD catches but he was unable to practice Friday after showing up with helmet in hand and every intention of working through the sprained left ankle he sustained in St. Louis last week.

Green, the team’s best blocking tight end, expects to return to the lineup this weekend after missing three games with a strained right calf, which happens to coincide with the offensive line’s nosedive.

“My body feels as good as it’s felt since camp started,” said Green, who pulled up lame in practice earlier this month, re-injuring a calf that had bothered him in training camp.

“It wasn’t as bad as camp, but it just took a lot of time this time to heal up,” Green said. “Everything starts from down there. If it were a strained quad or a strained hamstring, you could put a sleeve on it and go. But all your power starts from your calf.”

Green said he started feeling better last week but the training staff suggested he needed another week to let it fully heal so it won’t be a lingering problem down the stretch.

He could have help shore up the run-blocking and blitz pickup that’s come under heavy criticism since the Broncos (7-3) made wholesale changes on their offensive line three weeks ago. They’ve gone 1-2 since and lost their air of Super Bowl favorite.

“Absolutely, I can help, not just protection-wise but in the run game. That’s something that I take a lot of pride in,” Green said. “It’s something I feed of off. I love to hit. I’m smiling right now — just the thought of hitting somebody is a great feeling.”

Green doesn’t just want to be known as a good blocker. He said if Thomas can’t play, he hopes the Broncos allow him to display his versatility as a pass-catcher and even runner at times.

While the Broncos will welcome Green’s blocking prowess up front, they’d sorely miss Thomas, who’s a matchup nightmare for defenses.

“Julius is the one player where you are able to get really unequal matchups,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase said. “He’s a tough matchup whether it’s a safety or linebacker. You saw against New England they put a corner on him. That just shows you how challenging it is for defenses to plan for him.”

In Green, the Broncos have a different style of tight end who’s valuable in other ways.

“I’d love for J.T. to play. I really don’t know where he’s at right now, but if he doesn’t go, I feel like it’s an opportunity for me to show that I’m not just a blocking tight end,” Green said. “I can catch. People know I can run the ball as well, so it’s an opportunity for me and I have to jump all over it.”

Green, a fourth-year tight end from Nevada, said he feels he can be a wild-card for the Broncos as they try to get back on that Super Bowl Express.

“I do feel that way because a lot of people don’t know much about me. They just know that I can block,” Green said. “But people who do know about me know that I’m a very athletic guy. I just have to take advantage of the opportunities that the offense gives me and that Peyton Manning gives me.”

Chiefs Sign Veteran WR Avant, put Jenkins on IR

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have signed veteran Jason Avant to help a beleaguered and injury-prone group of wide receivers.

The move reunites Avant with Andy Reid, his longtime coach in Philadelphia. Kansas City cleared roster space by placing wide receiver A.J. Jenkins on injured reserve on Friday.

Avant was drafted by Reid’s Eagles and spent his first eight seasons there before signing with Carolina in the offseason. He was the Panthers’ third receiver and caught 21 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown before getting released this week.

Avant had criticized the Panthers for their offensive approach in last week’s loss to the Falcons, but coach Ron Rivera insisted that was not the reason for his release. Rivera said the Panthers were simply trying to get younger at wide receiver.

Nebraska Athletics to Host a Toys for Tots Drive

UNLAs a reminder the Nebraska Athletic Department will join the annual U.S. Marines Toys for Tots Drive on Saturday at home football and volleyball contests.

Husker fans are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to the game, and cash donations for the cause will also be accepted. The Marines will be stationed outside entrances to Memorial Stadium and the Bob Devaney Sports Center during both games to accept donations that will brighten the holiday season for needy children. The Husker football team will take on Minnesota at 11 a.m., with the volleyball team scheduled to play host to Michigan at 7 p.m.

Nebraska Athletics co-sponsored a Toys for Tots collection earlier this month at men’s and women’s basketball games.

Gophers Go to No. 21 Nebraska in Control of Fate

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Both teams are coming off losses, but the vibes around Nebraska and Minnesota couldn’t be more different.

The 21st-ranked Cornhuskers (8-2, 4-2 Big Ten) spent the week trying to come to grips with having allowed an FBS-record 408 yards rushing to Melvin Gordon in last week’s 59-24 meltdown at Wisconsin. The Gophers (7-3, 4-2) hung with Ohio State in a 31-24 loss in the snow and are excited about controlling their destiny in the Big Ten West.

Even if Nebraska beats Minnesota on Saturday, the Huskers would be out of the division race if Wisconsin wins at Iowa. The Gophers have a direct, albeit difficult, path to the Big Ten championship game. They must win their final two games, on the road against both Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Raiders Snap 16-Game Skid with 24-20 Win vs. KC

Kansas City Chiefs LogoOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Derek Carr threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to James Jones with 1:42 remaining and the Oakland Raiders snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 24-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Oakland’s Latavius Murray ran for two touchdowns on four carries before leaving the game with a concussion.

The Raiders (1-10) built a 14-point lead, but needed a 17-play, 80-yard drive led by Carr to secure its first win since beating Houston on Nov. 17, 2013.

Alex Smith threw two TD passes for the Chiefs (7-4), who had won five in a row. They fell a half-game behind Denver in the AFC West.

Huskers Focused on Senior Day Battle with Gophers

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team held its weekly walkthrough on Thursday for 45 minutes inside the Hawks Championship Center. Head Coach Bo Pelini spoke to the media afterwards.

“We finished it up,” Pelini said. “I think our guys are anxious to play. I know I’m anxious to get back out there. We had a good week of practice. Good attention to detail. I think our kids are anxious to play.”

Pelini also talked about Senior Day, and handling the emotions that surround it.

“I think it’s a mature group of guys,” Pelini said. “I’ve been there. I understand that it’s an emotional day for them. It’s the last time in the stadium for them in front of the fans knowing that your career is kind of wrapping up. It’s always emotional, but once you get into the game, usually you are able to get it under control and just are able to play ball.”

He added that he has the “utmost respect” for those seniors who haven’t played in a game, but continue to practice with the team.

“That’s what makes this program special,” Pelini said. “You don’t get that across the country. You just don’t. You don’t get guys that are willing to do what (they) did. We get a lot of guys who do that and really don’t blink an eye. They come out here every day and bust their butts and understand what their role is. And you have to give those guys a lot of credit.”

Pelini also said that he would bring those players into Saturday’s game “if the situation calls for it.” He added that quarterback Tommy Armstrong had a good week of practice.

“I told him the other day to go have fun,” Pelini said. “Relax and play. Just go out there and play. Hopefully that’s what he’s going to do. I think we will like the result.”

The No. 21 (AP) Huskers battle Minnesota in their final home game of the season on Saturday at 11 a.m. Senior Day ceremonies will be before the game, which will be televised on ESPN.

Nebraska senior I-back Ameer Abdullah has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2014 Doak Walker Award. The award is given annually to the nation’s top running back.

Abdullah has rushed for better than 200 yards four times during the 2014 season, tying a Nebraska school record. He has also produced a pair of games with better than 300 all-purpose yards, making him the only player in the nation with two games of 300-plus all-purpose yards. In the process, Abdullah has set a Nebraska school record for career all-purpose yards (6,700), while ranking second in Big Ten history in career all-purpose yardage.
