Huskers Turn Attention to Gophers

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team continued preparations for its Big Ten West showdown with the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Tuesdayafternoon, as the Huskers practiced for nearly two hours inside of the Hawks Championship Center and outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields.

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck spoke with the media following practice. Beck said the Huskers will have their hands full offensively Saturday, as the Gophers have been very stingy on defense this season.

“They are well-coached defensive team. They are very active up front, and they play the ball well in the secondary—a lot of man-to-man stuff,” Beck said. “They play their system, they have recruited to it and they coach them with good technique, and they do a good job. They are rarely out of position.”

Beck added that Minnesota’s defensive line is very active, pushing opposing offenses into third-and-long situations.

They are active, they use their hands really well and get you into third-down situations. Obviously all offenses want to stay out of those situations,” Beck said. “They are really good in those situations, so you want to do everything you can to keep yourself out of third-and-long.”

Beck noted that it was good for the players to get back to work on the field, including sophomore quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr.

He had a good day today,” Beck said of Armstrong. “He threw the ball well. I think it was good for the guys to get back on the field and get to work. (Tommy) is getting better. He will continue to grow. He is a young guy and it means a lot to him.”

Nebraska will practice again on Wednesday afternoon. Saturday’s Big Ten conference clash between Nebraska and Minnesota will be nationally televised on ESPN at 11:00 a.m. (Central).

Bailey became the Broncos’ most decorated defensive player and helped them reach the Super Bowl last season.

Coach Who Quit Accused of Punching Girl in Omaha

creighton-prepOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The head coach who resigned just days before a state championship football game is accused of punching a girl in Omaha.

Police say Chris Nizzi has been cited for misdemeanor assault. The 51-year-old quit as coach and as a counselor at Omaha Creighton Prep over the weekend. Nizzi declined to comment to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old girl told police that she and Nizzi’s 16-year-old son were parked near the Nizzi home about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when Nizzi arrived home and soon confronted her about hanging out with his son. She told officers that Nizzi then used a fist to strike her face. The report says Nizzi told officers he backhanded the girl.

Creighton Prep plays Omaha North for the state Class A title on Monday.

Huskers Turn Focus to Minnesota

nebraska_helmetLincoln – Coach Bo Pelini and Nebraska football student-athletes discussed this Saturday’s Senior Day showdown against Minnesota at Memorial Stadium with media members Monday.

Kickoff between the No. 21 Huskers (8-2, 4-2 Big Ten) and the Gophers (7-3, 4-2 Big Ten) is set for 11 a.m., with live national television coverage provided by ESPN.

The Huskers and Gophers are still in the hunt for the Big Ten West Division title, but both teams will be looking to regroup following losses over the weekend. Nebraska will try to bounce back from a 59-24 setback at No. 22 Wisconsin, while Minnesota will attempt to recover from a 31-24 loss to a top-10 Ohio State squad.

The Big Red should have plenty of motivation on Saturday. Not only will the Huskers be looking to avenge last year’s road loss at Minnesota, they also have the chance to send a group of 13 active seniors out with a victory in their final home games at Memorial Stadium.

Nebraska also has a chance to complete a perfect home season in the 340th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium. A win would also give the Big Red their seventh consecutive nine-win season under Coach Bo Pelini.

Pelini: Nebraska Moving in Right Direction

Bo-Pelini-Nebraska-HuskersLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says he has nothing to apologize for and that his program has not hit a ceiling in his seventh year on the job.

Pelini defended his program Monday in the wake of Saturday’s 59-24 loss at Wisconsin. The Badgers’ Melvin Gordon set an FBS single-game record with 408 yards rushing.

Pelini says the Cornhuskers have been consistent and that a lot of other programs “would have died to have won the amount of football games we’ve won.”

Pelini is 66-26 at Nebraska but hasn’t lost fewer than four games in a season. Pelini said he came to Nebraska to win championships and that he still thinks he can get it done. The Huskers dropped from No. 11 to No. 21 after Saturday’s loss.

Creighton Prep Coach Resigns Before Title Game

creighton-prepOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton Prep High School’s head coach has resigned suddenly just before the team will play in the state championship game.

The Omaha school’s principal and acting president John Naatz said Sunday that Chris Nizzi had resigned his jobs as coach and counselor immediately.

Naatz said in a statement that Nizzi’s resignation was made for personal reasons that he declined to elaborate on.

Nizzi declined to discuss his resignation with WOWT television.

Creighton Prep is 11-1 and will play undefeated Omaha North (12-0) in Lincoln on Nov. 24 for the state title.

Creighton Prep said Andy Yost will serve as head football coach.

Rams Surprise Manning, Broncos 22-7

DenverBroncosST. LOUIS (AP) — Shaun Hill was effective in his first start since regaining the quarterback job and the St. Louis Rams defense made life miserable for Peyton Manning in a 22-7 victory over the AFC West-leading Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Rookie Tre Mason had 29 carries for 113 yards, the most allowed by the Broncos’ top-ranked run defense.

Kenny Britt had four catches for 128 yards with a 63-yard score and Greg Zuerlein was a career-best 5 for 5 on field goals for the Rams (4-6).

Manning was 34 for 54 for 389 yards with two interceptions, but was held to a 42-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Sanders, ending a streak of 15 consecutive games with at least two touchdown passes.

The Broncos (7-3) were held to 28 yards rushing and failed twice on fourth down deep in St. Louis territory.

Manning threw incomplete from the 37 in the first quarter and rookie Aaron Donald’s sack ended a drive in the fourth quarter on fourth-and-4 from the 28.
