Chargers Running Back Woodhead Out for Year

Danny Woodhead

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Chargers coach Mike McCoy says running back Danny Woodhead has a broken lower right leg and will miss the rest of the season.

Woodhead was hurt on the first drive of the Chargers’ 22-10 win at Buffalo. He was stopped after a 1-yard gain by diving defensive tackle Kyle Williams. Williams hit Woodhead directly in the right ankle, which appeared to twist underneath the player.

Woodhead has been a big contributor to the Chargers since he joined them before the 2013 season.

With Ryan Mathews out for several weeks with a knee injury, McCoy says he and general manager Tom Telesco will decide later Monday how to go about adding a running back. Donald Brown, who carried 31 times for 62 yards, and rookie Branden Oliver are the only healthy backs on the roster.

Nebraska’s Abdullah: Jameis Winston Must Grow Up

jameis-winston

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Ameer Abdullah says 2013 winner Jameis Winston of Florida State needs to clean up his act.

Abdullah and Winston both grew up in the Birmingham, Alabama, area and trained together at the same gym. He said he considers Winston a friend.

Abdullah says Winston lacks maturity and needs to understand that how he presents himself has consequences.

Winston was suspended for last Saturday’s game against Clemson after several students said he stood on campus last week and shouted an obscene phrase that may have derived from an internet meme. Last April, Winston was caught leaving a supermarket without paying for crab legs and crawfish and was ordered to perform community service.

Abdullah Named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week

Ameer Abdullah
Ameer Abdullah

Nebraska I-back Ameer Abdullah earned Big Ten weekly honors for the second time this season on Monday.

Abdullah shared Big Ten Offensive honors with Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon following Nebraska’s 41-31 win over Miami Saturday night. Abdullah totaled 313 all-purpose yards – an NCAA single-game high in 2014 – as he rushed for 229 yards on 35 carries and two scores and added a three-yard touchdown reception. He also had four kickoff returns for 81 yards in the win, as his all-purpose yard total was second in Nebraska school history. He moved from fifth to third on Nebraska’s career rushing list while also becoming the Huskers’ career all-purpose yards leader, passing College Football Hall of Famer Johnny Rodgers.

Abdullah also earned the weekly honor against Florida Atlantic in the season opener when he rushed for 232 yards. Abdullah is one of only two players in the country with multiple 200-yard rushing games in 2014. Nebraska has won at least one Big Ten weekly award in each of the first four weeks of the season.

The Big Ten honor was one of several for Abdullah, as he was also named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for the second this season on Monday and was chosen as the Athlon Sports Big Ten Player of the Week.

Seahawks hold off Broncos 26-20 in Overtime

DenverBroncosSEATTLE (AP) — Marshawn Lynch scored on a 6-yard TD run on the first possession of overtime and the Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos 26-20 on Sunday in a Super Bowl rematch that lived up to expectations.

Seattle (2-1) blew a 17-3 fourth-quarter lead, watching Denver tie the game at 20 on Peyton Manning’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Tamme with 18 seconds left in regulation and his 2-point conversion pass to Demaryius Thomas.

But Manning never saw the ball in overtime thanks to Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson. After nearly getting sacked for a safety and throwing an interception in the fourth quarter, Wilson was brilliant in overtime. Wilson rushed for 21 yards and was 4 of 6 passing in overtime. Lynch went the final 6 yards.

Manning led the rally for Denver (2-1) helped by a number of Seahawks mistakes.

Alex Smith Leads Chiefs past Dolphins 34-15

Kansas City Chiefs LogoMIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Alex Smith shook off five sacks to throw three touchdown passes and help the Kansas City Chiefs earn their first victory by beating the Miami Dolphins 34-15 on Sunday.

Smith led touchdown drives of 62, 76 and 66 yards in a span of four possessions as Kansas City took leads of 14-0 and 21-10.

The Chiefs improved to 1-2 and won for only the third time in their past 11 games, including postseason.

The Dolphins fell to 1-2, another wobbly start for a team that hasn’t won a postseason game since 2000.

Smith, who ranked 35th and last in the NFL in passing after two weeks, went 19 for 25 for 186 yards, with three of his incompletions dropped. He threw scoring passes of 11 and 4 yards to Joe McKnight, and 20 yards to Travis Kelce.

Chargers’ Danny Woodhead Carted Off Against Bills

NFL: San Diego Chargers-Training CampORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead has been carted off the field after hurting his right ankle early in the first quarter against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Woodhead was hurt on a 1-yard run, when he was stopped by diving defensive tackle Kyle Williams. Williams hit Woodhead directly in the right ankle, which appeared to twist underneath the player.

Woodhead was briefly treated on the field before being loaded into a cart.

The Chargers said his return was questionable.

The injury is the latest blow to hit the Chargers’ offensive backfield. Starter Ryan Mathews is out after spraining his right knee in a 30-21 win over Seattle last week.

Woodhead’s injury leaves San Diego with two running backs, Donald Brown and undrafted rookie Brenden Oliver.

Abdullah Key in No. 24 Neb’s 41-31 Win over Miami

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. — Ameer Abdullah ran for 229 yards to lead a punishing ground game, and No. 24 Nebraska celebrated the 20th anniversary of its 1994 national championship team with an emotional 41-31 victory over Miami on Saturday night.

The Cornhuskers (4-0) will start Big Ten play next week off a performance that drew a Memorial Stadium record crowd of 91,585 that came to see a meeting of programs that combined for eight national titles from 1983 to 2001.

Miami (2-2) got within three points in the third quarter, but its five personal fouls in the second half helped the Huskers pull away. Only the coaches and team captains shook hands after the game. Fans booed as Miami left the field.

Miami’s Brad Kaaya threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns but was intercepted twice, and Duke Johnson ran 18 times for 93 yards.

Chiefs’ Charles Questionable to Play vs Dolphins

Jamaal Charles
Jamaal Charles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jamaal Charles practiced in a limited capacity for the second straight day, raising hopes that the Chiefs’ Pro Bowl running back will be available for Sunday’s game in Miami.

Charles sustained a high ankle sprain in last week’s loss to Denver.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that Charles, who did not practice Wednesday, looked a little bit sore but did “OK” in the workout. Reid said that Charles’ ankle loosened up as practice went along and “we’ll just see how he does.”

If Charles is unable to go, Knile Davis would get the majority of carries for Kansas City.
