Nebraska has 1,000 of 8,500 Student Tickets Left

Memorial-Stadium-Huskers-NeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — With less than a month until the season opener, Nebraska still has 1,000 of its 8,500 student football tickets for sale.

Athletic department spokeswoman Chris Anderson said Friday the school expects to sell out of student tickets. All remaining tickets are for seats in the south end zone.

Anderson said several promotions are planned for students. Among them are pregame festivities, a student rewards program and the ability to purchase guest tickets.

Anderson said August traditionally is a strong month for student ticket sales because of the arrival of freshmen.

Student sales have lagged nationally in recent years. According to media reports, Michigan expects to sell 12,000 to 13,000, down from 19,000 last season. Iowa has seen its sales drop from about 10,000 to 7,000 the past two years.

Commings Out After Surgery for Fractured Fibula

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs received good news on the injury to All-Pro safety Eric Berry.

Berry, who left Thursday’s training camp practice with what the team said was a sore ankle, has a right heel injury according to team spokesman Ted Crews.

Berry did not practice Friday, but was observed walking without a noticeable limp.

“There’s just letting him have a few days just to let that relax,” Crews said.

The news, however, isn’t as good surrounding second-year defensive back Sanders Commings.

“He had very similar to a high ankle sprain, but to the extreme where he needed surgery to repair that high ankle sprain,” Chiefs head athletic training Rick Burkholder said.

“As his foot externally rotated on the play, he fractured his fibula.”

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Eric Berry left Chiefs practice on Thursday after hurting his lower right leg, the second injury that the Pro Bowl safety has sustained so far in training camp.

Berry missed some time earlier with a dislocated finger.

It was unclear what happened to Berry during one of the early sessions of practice at Missouri Western. He was checked by trainers in the injury tent next to the field, then talked with other team officials on the sideline before leaving the field on a cart.

Berry was able to put weight on the leg, but was noticeably limping. Chiefs coach Andy Reid was expected to discuss the nature and severity of the injury after practice.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Lions running back Joique Bell says a lot of people counted him out when he was undrafted out of Wayne State.

Four years later, Bell has established himself as player valued enough to get a multimillion-dollar contract.

Bell was back on his college field Wednesday night with his NFL teammates for a public practice.

He won the Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II Player of the Year in 2009, but no one drafted him.

Buffalo, Philadelphia, Indianapolis and New Orleans gave him chances over his first two years in the league. Bell played in every game the previous two seasons for the Lions, putting him in a position to get a $9.3 million, three-year deal in March.

NFL Retirees Lose Round in Concussion Settlement

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal judge has rejected an attempt by seven former professional football players to intervene in a tentative class action settlement of concussion claims that would cost the NFL at least $765 million.

Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody issued an order in Philadelphia late Tuesday denying the NFL retirees’ motion to intervene in the case.

The players object to the settlement, calling it a “lousy deal” for ex-players whose symptoms don’t qualify them for compensation. Brody’s order said that players who object to the deal can raise their concerns at a fairness hearing scheduled for Nov. 19, or opt out of the settlement.

Brody gave preliminary approval to the settlement earlier this month.

The group includes 2008 Pro Bowl player Sean Morey, now Princeton University’s sprint football coach.
