Dan Marino Files Concussion Lawsuit Against NFL

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino is among the latest group of football players to file a concussion-related lawsuit against the National Football League.

The 52-year-old former Miami Dolphins quarterback is one of 15 former players who filed a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia last week.

Marino and the other 14 plaintiffs join more than 4,800 others who have alleged the NFL misled players about the long-term dangers of concussions. The NFL has denied those claims.

The lawsuit doesn’t specify any medical problems suffered by the plaintiffs including Marino, who retired in 1999. It seeks unspecified damages and medical monitoring.

The NFL and the original group of players agreed on a $765 million settlement last August. But the settlement was rejected by a federal judge in January.

Lineman Returns to His Love: the Football Field

Derek-Wolfe-Denver-Broncos-ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The seizure, the weight loss, the false-start of a comeback. Derek Wolfe endured them all while always keeping one goal in mind: Getting back on the football field.

That the Broncos defensive lineman kept football on the front burner through the difficult times is a testament to the third-year veteran’s love of the game. This was not, by any means, your typical football injury.

Wolfe suffered a seizure during the bus ride to the airport for Denver’s flight to Kansas City last Nov. 29. He ended up in the hospital for several days, and was put in a medically induced coma while doctors performed procedures to rule out a brain tumor.

DENVER (AP) — Jack Elway, the son of Denver Broncos general manager John Elway, was arrested on assault charges after his girlfriend told police he pulled her out of a car by her hair.

Court documents obtained Monday show the woman told Denver police that 24-year-old John Albert Elway also pushed her to the ground when she tried to get back in the car, causing scrapes.

The documents say the incident happened early Saturday near a college campus in downtown Denver. Elway initially fled the scene.

Elway was released from jail on $550 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Thursday. He faces charges of assault and disturbing the peace.

Court records do not list an attorney. A Broncos spokesman says the case is a personal family matter.

DENVER (AP) — Jack Elway, the son of Denver Broncos executive John Elway, has been arrested on charges of assault and disturbing the peace.

According to jail records, 24-year-old John Albert Elway was booked into jail early Saturday morning for an incident that occurred near a college campus in downtown Denver. Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez says she can’t provide any details about what led to the arrest, other than the alleged victim was a female.

Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth says “this is a personal family matter and the Broncos will not have any additional comment on it.”

Elway has been released on $550 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday. Jail records do not indicate if he has an attorney.

Sanders Gets a New Opportunity with Broncos

Emmanuel Sanders

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The last time receiver Emmanuel Sanders spent the offseason aiming to get his team back to the Super Bowl, there was only so much he could do.

Surgery on his right foot, then his left foot, made him more of a bit player in Pittsburgh’s bid to repeat as AFC champion in 2011.

Playing for the Denver Broncos now, Sanders is back to full health and embracing his role in the sport more than ever.

The injuries taught him to appreciate football. And, he says, he figures the chance to play with Peyton Manning could give him a chance to finally realize his full potential.

Manning Signs Deal with Insurance Company

Peyton-ManningENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Quarterback. Pizza maker. Motivational speaker. And now, Peyton Manning is getting into the insurance business.

The Broncos quarterback signed an endorsement deal with Nationwide Insurance and will be featured in national advertising next season.

The insurance company also announced an expanded marketing deal with the Broncos.

Shortly after his move to Denver, Manning made a splash when he bought franchises of a national pizza chain and began starring in commercials for the company.

In addition to making speaking appearances and showing up on David Letterman during a busy offseason, Manning inked the deal with Nationwide.

At a news conference, Manning handed a company executive a No. 18 Broncos jersey with “Nationwide” sewed on the back.

“Don’t put it on eBay,” Manning said.

Bronco Back 6 Months After Emergency Surgery

Rahim Moore Denver BroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A year ago at this time, Denver Broncos safety Rahim Moore was dealing with the emotional scars of having allowed Jacoby Jones’ game-turning touchdown in the playoffs.

He used it as fodder for a spectacular 2013 season, one which ended in November with a rare muscle condition.

Now, it’s a physical scar that serves as his motivation.

Jagged and thick, it runs 13 inches down his left calf, a constant reminder of that night six months ago when his decision to go to the hospital in the middle of the night saved not only his NFL career but also his leg and potentially his life.

Flowers, Houston Absent as Chiefs Begin Workouts

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid downplayed the absences of cornerback Brandon Flowers and linebacker Justin Houston from the first week of voluntary, full-squad workouts.

That likely won’t do much to quell speculation about why they were missing on Thursday.

Flowers gradually lost playing time last season, and his bloated contract could mean that the Chiefs are trying to restructure the deal or trade him. It could also mean the Chiefs are thinking about cutting him to save valuable salary cap space.

As for Houston, he becomes a free agent after the upcoming season. The Chiefs have expressed interest in signing him to a long-term deal, but they are cash-strapped at present.

The Chiefs are also negotiating with quarterback Alex Smith, who is entering the final year of his contract.

Broncos Get Injured Players Back on Field

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The AFC champion Denver Broncos conducted their first practice of the offseason Wednesday with several new faces and a bunch of players who missed the Super Bowl.

Coming back from injuries that kept them on the sideline against Seattle were safeties Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter, pass-rusher Von Miller, defensive lineman Derek Wolfe and left tackle Ryan Clady.

Also, cornerback Chris Harris Jr. worked on the side with a strength and conditioning coach. Miller joined him for the second half of the workout while his teammates went through 11-on-11 drills.

The Broncos limped into the Super Bowl with just three opening day starters on defense: linebacker Danny Trevathan, lineman Terrance Knighton and cornerback Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie, who wasn’t re-signed.

Chiefs OLB Ford Looks Good at Rookie Minicamp

Dee Ford Kansas City ChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid says outside linebacker Dee Ford showed impressive athleticism during the team’s three-day rookie minicamp.

Kansas City selected Ford with the 23rd overall pick in this year’s draft. Ford played his college ball at Auburn, where he had 20½ sacks and 27½ tackles for loss in 52 games.

Ford is transitioning from defensive end with the Tigers to outside linebacker with the Chiefs. Reid says Ford has done a great job of learning the defense and his new position.

Ford gives Kansas City another pass rusher after the Chiefs had 47 sacks last season, tied for sixth in the NFL. Reid says Ford “brings a lot of energy.”

The rookie minicamp ended on Monday.
