AP Source: Broncos Expected to Release Bailey

Champ-Bailey-Denver-BroncosDENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos are expected to release perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday night.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was made.

By releasing Bailey, the Broncos would open up cap space with the 12-time Pro Bowl player scheduled to make around $10 million next season.

Bailey was sidelined most of the season by a nagging left foot sprain. The 35-year-old shutdown corner returned late in the season to help the Broncos advance to the Super Bowl, where they lost 43-8 to Seattle.

Bailey was acquired in 2004 by the Broncos in a deal that sent running back Clinton Portis to the Washington Redskins.

A message was left with Bailey’s agent.

10-Second Rule Withdrawn by NCAA Rules Committee

NCAA-Football-CollegeNEW YORK (AP) — The NCAA football rules committee tabled a proposal Wednesday that would have penalized offenses for snapping the ball before 10 seconds had run off the 40-second play clock.

After a conference call, the panel agreed not to send the so-called 10-second rule to the playing rules oversight panel for approval Thursday.

NCAA national coordinator of officials Rogers Redding says withdrawing the proposal allows “time to gather more information from the medical community and allow time for a broader discussion of the implications of that change.”

The proposal, touted as a move to protect players by slowing fast-break offenses, infuriated many coaches.

Redding also says a new proposal was passed to expand roughing the passer to include “forcible” hits to the knees or below.

10-Second Rule to Go Up for NCAA Approval Thursday

NCAA-Football-CollegeNEW YORK (AP) — A proposed rule change that would penalize college football offenses for snapping the ball before 10 seconds had run off the 40-second play clock is scheduled to be reviewed one last time by an NCAA committee on Wednesday.

The conference call by the football rules committee is a routine step in the process, but also the last opportunity for the proposal to be withdrawn before it goes to the playing rules oversight panel on Thursday.

If the panel approves the proposal, the rule would go into effect next season.

The proposed change was made to address player-safety concerns held by some coaches who say hurry up, no-huddle offenses that increase the number of plays in games and limit defensive substitutions put players at greater risk for injuries.

NFL Salary Cap Set at Record $133 Million

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — The NFL’s salary cap for this season has been set at $133 million, the highest amount in league history.

Each team must be compliant with the cap number by March 11, when the league’s free agency period begins. The cap amount announced Friday, which applies to active players’ salaries, is up from $123 million last season and surpasses the previous high of $127,997,000 in 2009.

NFL teams can carry over unused salary cap room from the previous league year, and the NFLPA says in a release Friday that the average carryover for those teams that elected to do so was $6.1 million.

The league’s salary cap is calculated by taking a percentage of all projected NFL revenues, subtracting projected benefits for the season, and dividing by 32 teams.

Nebraska Coach Pelini Goes Over $3 Million in Pay

bo peliniLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini is crossing the $3 million threshold in annual salary.

According to terms of Pelini’s contract signed in 2012, he’ll receive a $100,000 raise on Saturday. That will take his annual salary from $2.975 million to $3.075 million.

Pelini is 57-24 in six seasons at Nebraska. Former athletic director Tom Osborne extended Pelini’s contract through February 2018 before he retired in December 2012.

Raises were announced for two other Big Ten football coaches this week. Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio will earn $3.64 million in annual compensation under a new six-year contract after being paid $1.99 million last year. Minnesota’s Jerry Kill is making $2.1 million, up from $1.2 million, after having his contract extended a year.

Giants and Bills to Play in Hall of Fame Game

Pro Football Hall of FameNEW YORK (AP) — The Buffalo Bills and New York Giants will kick off the 2014 NFL preseason in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.

The league announced Thursday the matchup for the Aug. 3 game.

The contest will be played a day after the Hall of Fame inducts seven new members, including one each from the Bills and Giants.

Wide receiver Andre Reed played 15 of his 16 seasons with the Bills from 1985-1999. Defensive end Michael Strahan spent his 15-season career with the Giants from 1993-2007, winning a Super Bowl in his final season.

This is the first time the Bills and Giants will meet in the Hall of Fame Game.

Cleaning up Language Could be Part of NFL Changes

nfl_logo2011-medINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NFL competition committee may attempt to clean up the language on the field next season.

Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, one of the committee members, told reporters Saturday the league is looking at ways to reduce the use of racial and gender-related slurs sometimes used during games. Newsome is in Indianapolis for the NFL’s scouting combine.

No votes will be held on any potential rules changes until next month’s owners meetings in Orlando, Fla.

Newsome noted the concerns of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, a group of minority coaches and front-office, scouting and game-day NFL officials. He also said game officials told the committee what they sometimes hear on the field and that microphones around the field often capture what is being said.

Study: Football Participation Rebounded in ’13

fox-footballINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — More young children played football last year than was recorded in 2012, according to a report set for release Friday.

The Sports and Fitness Industry Association study showed the number of children age 8 or younger playing football increased by 10.2 percent in 2013.

Five-year trends show overall participation in baseball, basketball and soccer and tackle football still declining. Soccer and baseball participation dropped by more than 7 percent and basketball by 8.3 percent from 2008 to 2012. Football, however, saw a 5.4 percent decline.

High school football continues to be the only boys sport with more than 1 million players.

USA Football, which commissioned the report, said 64 percent of parents of flag football players expect their child to play tackle football.

Chiefs’ Dorsey Says Franchise Tag Use Unlikely

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs general manager John Dorsey says he does not anticipate using the franchise tag to keep one of the team’s free agents, something they’ve done each of the past three seasons.

After speaking at the NFL’s annual scouting combine in Indianapolis, Dorsey addressed the Chiefs’ tentative plans with a small group of local reporters.

The Chiefs are poised to lose several key players, including Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert and Pro Bowl punt returner Dexter McCluster. Also scheduled to become unrestricted free agents are starting safety Kendrick Lewis, starting defensive end Tyson Jackson and part-time starting offensive linemen Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz.

Dorsey did say that he’s having “ongoing conversations” with representatives of all of the Chiefs’ free agents. The free agency period begins March 11.

Man Charged in Death of Fan at Arrowhead Stadium

Kansas_City_Arrowhead_StadiumKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a Kansas City Chiefs fan in an Arrowhead Stadium parking lot.

Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced the charge Friday against 23-year-old Joshua T. Bradley of Independence. He was arrested early Friday and is being held on $75,000 bond.

Smithville resident Kyle Van Winkle died after being confronted by a group of fans Dec. 1 when he was found in the wrong vehicle in the parking lot. Police say the Jeep looked like one that Van Winkle rode in to the game.

Peters Baker said Friday that Bradley hit Van Winkle more than once during the confrontation.

An autopsy found that Van Winkle died from a blow to the head.
