Players Championship Changes to 3-Hole Playoff

PGA-LogoPONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The Players Championship is changing this year to a three-hole aggregate playoff involving the closing stretch at the TPC Sawgrass.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced the new format Wednesday.

The Players Championship previously was a sudden-death playoff that began on the par-3 17th hole, famous for having an island green. Starting this year, a playoff would take place on the par-5 16th hole, the 17th, and the par-4 18th. If players are still tied, it would go to sudden death starting on the 17th.

The Players Championship is May 8-11. It becomes the only regular PGA Tour event to use a playoff format that is not sudden death.

Bubba Watson Wins Another Green Jacket at Augusta

Bubba Watson Masters GolfAUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Bubba Watson has won the Masters for the second time in three years.

Watson claimed another green jacket by shooting a 3-under 69 in the final round Sunday, fending off Jordan Spieth’s bid to become the youngest major champion since 1931.

The 20-year-old Texan led by two shots heading to the eighth hole, but the tournament changed suddenly.

Watson made two straight birdies, Spieth took back-to-back bogeys — and just like that, Watson was up by two strokes at the turn.

The left-hander led the rest of the way, adding to the 2012 title he won in more spectacular fashion with a playoff victory. The winning score was 8-under 280.

Spieth finished with a 72, his worst score of the week. He was 283 overall, tied with Sweden’s Jonas Blixt.

Woods to Skip Match Play Championship in Arizona

Tiger Woods GolfJUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods is skipping the Match Play Championship in Arizona in two weeks.

Woods announced on his website Thursday that he wasn’t planning to compete in the first World Golf Championship. He says his plan was to attend the Sochi Olympics in Russia before his girlfriend and champion skier Lindsey Vonn got injured.

Instead, he will stay home and prepare for three tournaments in Florida. He’ll next play the Honda Classic on Feb. 27 followed by title defenses at Doral and Bay Hill.

This was the first time Woods has missed the Match Play Championship when healthy and the tournament was held in America.

This means the Match Play will be without three of the top players in the world —Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott.

Golf Rules Tweaked Over Use of Video Technology

PGA-LogoGolfers will no longer be penalized if their ball moves from a rest position without their knowledge under new rules next year by the sport’s governing bodies.

The U.S. Golf Association and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club addressed the issue of video technology while announcing several rule changes Tuesday.

In a joint statement, the organizations said that when “enhanced technological evidence” shows a ball has changed location, it “will not be deemed to have moved if that movement was not reasonably discernible to the naked eye at the time.”

The R&A and the USGA say improved technology has “brought a new level of scrutiny to rules issues arising in elite golf tournaments” and an “increasing number of inquiries to officials from television viewers and others.”

Dufner Beats Furyk at PGA for 1st Major Title

Jason-Dufner-Golf-PGAPITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Jason Dufner has won his first major title with a two-stroke victory over Jim Furyk at the PGA Championship.

Dufner bogeyed the final two holes Sunday for a 2-under 68 that was good enough to hold off the 2003 U.S. Open champion. The winning score was 10-under 270.

Henrik Stenson finished three shots back.

Dufner made up for the heartache of the 2011 PGA, when he went to the 15th tee with a four-stroke lead in Atlanta. He dunked that shot in the water, squandered the advantage and lost to Keegan Bradley in a playoff.

There was no such collapse on another warm, sunny day at Oak Hill.

From tee to green, Dufner was nearly perfect. If not for a bit of a shaky putter, the margin would’ve been even more.

Furyk has Lead Heading to Final Round of PGA

Jim-FurykPITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Jim Furyk has a one-stroke lead going to the final round of the PGA Championship.

Furyk shot a 2-under 68 on Saturday at Oak Hill, capped by an 18-foot birdie on the tough 17th hole and a clutch putt from the fringe to save par at No. 18.

The 43-year-old American pumped his fist emphatically and headed off to the clubhouse, out front heading to Sunday in a major for the first time since last year’s U.S. Open. At Olympic, he lost out on his second major title with two bogeys on the last three holes.

Furyk was at 9-under 201.

Jason Dufner, the 36-hole leader, followed a record-tying 63 with a 71 to drop a stroke back.

Henrik Stenson is two shots back, with fellow Swede Jonas Blixt another stroke behind.

Dufner Sets Course Record in Second Round

PGA-Championship-2013-Oak-HPITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Jason Dufner spent the afternoon attacking records at Oak Hill in the same manner the Chicago White Sox attacked records on Disco Demolition Night.

Dufner set one record and matched two others in taking the lead at the midway point of the PGA championship. He fired a 7-under-par 63 to break the Oak Hill course record and match the lowest round in a major tournament. He’s 9-under for the tourney, tying the 36-hole PGA scoring record held by six other players.

Dufner had a chance to shoot the first 62 in a major championship, but he left a 12-foot birdie putt short on 18, leaving him the 12th player to shoot 63 in the event. It’s also the 26th time a 63 had been shot in a major.

Matt Kuchar shot a 4-under 66 to grab a share of second with first-round co-leaders Jim Furyk (FYOOR’-ihk) and Adam Scott, two shots behind Dufner. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson are three strokes back and one ahead of Webb Simpson, Martin Kaymer, Charley Hoffman and Marcus Fraser.

Defending champ Rory McIlroy is even through 36. Tiger Woods is eight shots off the pace following an even-par 70. Phil Mickelson barely made the cut at plus-2, 11 shots back.

Scott, Furyk Top PGA Scoreboard in Ripe Conditions

golfPITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Adam Scott is off to another good start in a major, shooting a 5-under 65 that left him tied for the lead with Jim Furyk after the opening round of the PGA Championship on Thursday.

Scott won his first major title at the Masters, and he was out front on the final day of the British Open before fading.

The Aussie shot a 5-under 30 on the front nine at Oak Hill, taking advantage of a course softened by overnight rain and ripe for the taking. Scott got to 6 under after play resumed following a 71-minute delay while more storms passed.

Scott’s only stumble came at the 16th, where he missed a 5-footer to take his first bogey.

Tiger Woods shot 71 after making a double bogey on his final hole.

Woods Readies for PGA

golfPITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Golfers are making final preparations for the last major of the year. The PGA Championship begins tomorrow at Oak Hill in suburban Rochester, N.Y., with a number of interesting story lines. Not the least of which is Tiger Woods’ resurgence with five wins this year. He’s trying to break a five-year-plus winless drought in the majors.

Phil Mickelson is also drawing interest after capturing the British Open two weeks ago, following a win the previous week in the Scottish Open.

The defending champ is Rory McIlroy, whose game has fallen into disarray following his victory at Kiawah Island last year.

This is the third time Oak Hill has hosted PGA Championship. It’s also staged three U.S. Opens and a Ryder Cup.
