North Platte American Legion Baseball Announces the 2014 Hall of Fame Class

North Platte American Legion Baseball First NationalsThe North Platte American Legion Baseball program has announced that three individuals and a state championship winning team will be inducted into the program’s Hall of Fame in 2014.

This year’s class includes one player, one state championship team, and two individuals who donated countless hours to making North Platte American Legion Baseball what it has become.  This year’s class includes Jack Raetz (posthumously), Mick Hayes, Steve Gullion and the 1994 Midget Post 163 baseball team. They will be inducted during the North Platte American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame weekend, May 2-3.

The Hall of Fame weekend will begin at 4:30 pm Friday May 2nd at Bill Wood Field with an intra-squad scrimmage of the current Legion teams followed by an alumni vs alumni game at 7:30 pm.  In between innings they will honor the Hall of Fame inductees.  Admission is free.

Saturday May 3rd, the American Legion 4-person golf scramble will begin at Lake Maloney Golf course with a shotgun start at 12:30 pm.  Following the golf tournament, there will be a banquet honoring the 2014 North Platte Legion Baseball Hall of Fame inductees.  The golf tournament cost is $65.00 which includes the banquet. Tickets for the banquet only are $20.00.   All past Legion players are invited to come out and participate and the entire community is welcome as well.

North Platte American Legion Baseball has had a long and distinguished run in North Platte, with the program officially starting around 1960.  Hundreds of players and fans, along with dozens of coaches and others truly dedicated to the program have been involved in American Legion Baseball.  In 2013 the Board of Directors decided a Hall of Fame to honor these outstanding individuals should be started.  The inaugural class included two coaches, two players and two individual volunteers.

The First Nationals will start their regular season Sat May 17th when the Seniors travel to Scottsbluff. The Juniors host Scottsbluff at Bill Wood Field in North Platte at 1:00 pm.  The Juniors will be home over Memorial Day weekend and the Seniors will be home Monday May 26th. First pitch for the Seniors is at 2:00 pm.

Giants and Bills to Play in Hall of Fame Game

Pro Football Hall of FameNEW YORK (AP) — The Buffalo Bills and New York Giants will kick off the 2014 NFL preseason in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.

The league announced Thursday the matchup for the Aug. 3 game.

The contest will be played a day after the Hall of Fame inducts seven new members, including one each from the Bills and Giants.

Wide receiver Andre Reed played 15 of his 16 seasons with the Bills from 1985-1999. Defensive end Michael Strahan spent his 15-season career with the Giants from 1993-2007, winning a Super Bowl in his final season.

This is the first time the Bills and Giants will meet in the Hall of Fame Game.

NE High School Sports Hall of Fame Adds to its Staff

Nebraska High School Sports Hall of FameThe Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Foundation is pleased to announce that Mike Rasmussen of Lincoln, recently retired Assistant Athletic Director at Lincoln Southeast High School, has been appointed as Assistant to the Executive Director of the NHSSHOFF.  Mike’s primary responsibility will be in the supervision of the new Hall of Fame Exhibit Hall, which opened on December 9th, 2013.

Mike served as Assistant Athletic Director at LSE for 12 years.  Prior to that time he worked as a teacher and coach at Exeter, Centennial, and McCook High Schools, as well as Athletic Director at Plattsmouth High School.

The NHSSHOFF is also pleased to announce operating hours of the Exhibit Hall, located in the NSAA office building in Lincoln at 500 Charleston Street.  The hall will be open on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and will also be open from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. during the boys’ & girls’ state basketball tournaments.  Service clubs, schools, and other community organizations may make arrangements for special presentations by calling Larry Munksgaard at 402-432-8049, or emailing [email protected].

Chadron St.’s Marshall to Enter RMAC Hall of Fame

Chadron_collegeCHADRON, Neb. (AP) — The longtime director of information services and sports information at Chadron State College will be inducted into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

Con Marshall served as the western Nebraska college’s publicist for more than three decades. He retired in 2007 but has stayed involved in campus activities. The Chadron native also is one of the Panhandle’s prominent historians.

Former University of Nebraska at Kearney basketball player Eric Strand also will enter the hall.

The RMAC Hall of Fame induction ceremony is July 11 in Colorado Springs.
