‘Firewater’ Remark Draws Ire of American Indian Team’s Fans

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An owner of a sports website apologized Thursday after one of its commentators used the term “firewater” in describing how supporters of an American Indian boys high school basketball team would celebrate its first-round victory at the state tournament.

WahooSportsOnline.com co-owner Bryce Cook said the comment was made by a volunteer who was assisting Cook and Kevin Stuhr as the site streamed the game online. Cook said the volunteer would not work for the site again.

The comment was made near the end of Winnebago High School’s 66-50 win over Wahoo in the Class C1 tournament Thursday.

Lance Morgan, president and CEO of the economic development corporation owned by the Winnebago Tribe, said the term “firewater” is upsetting because it refers to the stereotype of American Indians drinking to excess.

Millard West Player Statuses in Question after MIP Citations

Millard West Wildcats LogoOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Millard West could be without one or more of its varsity basketball players when it plays in the state basketball tournament in Lincoln this week.

One 18-year-old member of the team was among some 70 people cited by police for minor in possession at a party in west Omaha on Saturday night. Police did not identify all of the people ticketed.

Millard West plays Omaha Creighton Prep on Thursday. Millard Public Schools policy calls for a student to be held out of extracurricular activities for 19 days when he or she commits an offense off school grounds.

Millard West athletic director Chris Loofe would not say Tuesday how many players, if any, would be suspended. Loofe said that “will be answered Thursday night when the team takes the floor.”

Houston-Area Voters Approve $58M High School Football Stadium

fox-footballKATY, Texas (AP) — Houston-area voters have approved a whopping bond package that includes $58 million to build a 12,000-seat high school football stadium.

The $748 million bond approved by voters in the Katy school district will pay for new schools and includes money for the stadium.

A year ago, voters rejected plans for a stadium that would have seated 14,000 and cost more than $69 million.

The stadium approved Tuesday will certainly be one of the most expensive in Texas history, but its price tag falls just short of the $60 million the Dallas suburb of Allen spent for its stadium.

The Allen facility, built two years ago, was closed earlier this year after structural flaws were found. The Allen Eagles play their football games elsewhere.

High School Cancels Football Season over Bullying

fox-footballPARLIN, N.J. (AP) — A central New Jersey town is reeling after its high school football season was cut short by allegations of bullying and harassment among players.

Sayreville War Memorial High has been a powerhouse, winning three sectional titles in the last four years.

On Monday night, school district officials canceled the rest of the season after speaking with the county prosecutor’s office, which is conducting an investigation into the bullying allegations.

The prosecutor’s office hasn’t released any details and didn’t respond to a message seeking comment Tuesday.

The school superintendent says there was evidence of pervasive harassment, intimidation and bullying.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

Officials at a central New Jersey high school that has won three sectional titles over the past four years canceled the football season amid allegations of harassment, intimidation and bullying among players.

Sayreville school officials made the announcement Monday night during a meeting with the players’ parents. The district already had canceled and forfeited a game that was scheduled last Thursday between Sayreville War Memorial and South Brunswick, and announced that the Middlesex County prosecutor’s office was investigating the allegations.

“There was enough evidence that there were incidents of harassment, of intimidation and bullying that took place on a pervasive level, on a wide-scale level and at a level at which the players knew, tolerated and generally accepted,” Superintendent Richard Labbe told reporters Monday night. “Based upon what has been substantiated to have occurred, we have canceled the remainder of the football season.”

Labbe said he could not discuss the investigation, and the prosecutor’s office has declined to release any details. No charges have been filed. Labbe said Prosecutor Andrew Carey told him there is credible evidence to back up the allegations of bullying and harassment within the program.

Also last week, an assistant football coach at the high school resigned amid allegations that he possessed steroids. Labbe said at the time that the allegations against the former defensive coordinator were the focus of a separate investigation and were not related to the cancellation of last week’s game.
