Dillon Colors Out Green Bay In 4-0 Win

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm (4-2-0) goaltender Alec Dillon made it two Friday night shutouts in a row, defeating the Green Bay Gamblers (2-3-0) 4-0 on Color Out Cancer Night at the Viaero Event Center Friday.

On an ice surface painted by fans, Dillon stopped all 25 shots that came his way to record his second shutout of the season. Tri-City got goals from four different players, including three power play tallies.

Garrett Gamez scored in the first period before Cody Milan, Chris Wilkie and Mason Appleton each netted power play goals in the second.

Gamez opened the scoring with his third goal of the year at 7:58 of the first period and the Storm went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Things were broken open in the second when Tri-City scored power play goals just a minute and four seconds apart from each other. First, Milan found a rebound in front and put it home for his first goal of the season. After another Green Bay penalty to Jake Kauppila for roughing, Jake Wahlin placed a pass right on Wilkie’s stick for the goal and a 3-0 lead. Wilkie now has four goals in the team’s first six games to lead the team.

Later in the middle period, Storm defenseman Bobby Nardella found Appleton in front for the team’s third power play goal of the period to make it 4-0. Appleton now has three goals in his first six USHL games.

Gamblers’ netminder Jared Rutledge made 30 stops for Green Bay in the loss. Tri-City outshot Green Bay 34-25 in the game.

The two teams will finish off their weekend series with an afternoon 3:05 p.m. start time on Saturday at the Viaero Event Center.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Aleksi Ainali, Nolan Aibel and Wade Allison, along with defenseman Jason Krych and goaltender Blake Weyrick…

MacArthur gets Winner as Senators Beat Avalanche

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoOTTAWA (AP) — Clarke MacArthur had the go-ahead score during Ottawa’s three-goal third period to give the Senators a 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.

Bobby Ryan, Zack Smith and David Legwand also scored to help the Senators win their home opener. Craig Anderson stopped 31 shots and Chris Neil had an empty-net goal with 1:22 to go.

Alex Tanguay, John Mitchell and Gabriel Landeskog scored for the Avalanche. Calvin Pickard stopped 23 shots in his NHL debut after replacing Reto Berra at 2:46 of the first period.

Berra left the game after he was knocked over by Ottawa’s Kyle Turris, who was pushed by Mitchell. Pickard was called up earlier in the day from Lake Erie of the AHL after the Avalanche placed Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve.

Avalanche Place Varlamov on Injured Reserve

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche have placed goaltender Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve with a groin ailment.

The move is retroactive to Tuesday, when the Russian goalie possibly tweaked his groin in a 3-2 overtime loss in Toronto.

Varlamov is 0-2-1 with a 3.80 goals-against average so far this season.

He shined last season with Patrick Roy behind the bench, leading the NHL with 41 wins. That mark also broke Roy’s franchise record for most victories in a single season.

Reto Berra will fill in until Varlamov returns to the net. The Avalanche play Thursday night at Ottawa and then finish up a four-game road swing Saturday in Montreal.

Maple Leafs Slip past Avalanche 3-2 in OT

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoTORONTO (AP) — Phil Kessel scored 34 seconds into overtime and the Toronto Maple Leafs earned a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.

James van Riemsdyk and Joffrey Lupul also scored for Toronto. Goaltender James Reimer, who took a delay of game penalty in the third period, made 22 saves to pick up another victory in his second straight start.

Ryan O’Reilly and Matt Duchene scored for Colorado. With a pair of assists, former Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla picked up his first two points with his new team.

Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov was sharp in making 37 saves.

Briere’s Goal Beats Clock; Avs Beat Bruins 2-1

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoBOSTON (AP) — Daniel Briere scored off a rebound with four-tenths of a second left in the third period to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Monday.

Jamie McGinn also scored for the Avalanche, who had opened the season with two shutout losses. Backup goaltender Reto Berra made 27 saves in his first start of the season.

Loui Eriksson had a power-play goal for the Bruins, who have lost three straight.

Boston backup goalie Niklas Svedberg played his first game of the season and made 28 saves.

The game appeared to be heading to overtime when Svedberg made a pair of stops in the closing minute.

Briere, at the edge of the crease, fired the puck over the sprawling goalie just before time expired after Jan Hejda’s shot from the point. The clock read 0.0, but replays showed the puck crossed the goal line before time expired.

It was Briere’s 300th career goal.

KEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm goalie Alec Dillon was named the USHL’s Goaltender of the Week by the league office Monday afternoon.

The Victoria, B.C. native made a total of 68 saves during the weekend, allowing just two goals as Tri-City split a two-game series with the Chicago Steel in Kearney at the Viaero Event Center.

Dillon recorded his first USHL shutout during Friday night’s game, stopping 39 shots in the process.

A 5th round draft pick of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, Dillon has had a great start to his first season in the league and currently has a 3-1-0 record with a 1.32 goals against average and a save percentage of .958.

Kuemper Bottles Up Avs as Wild Win, 3-0

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Darcy Kuemper stopped 30 shots for his second straight shutout of high-scoring Colorado and Jason Zucker scored his first goal since January, helping the Minnesota Wild beat the Avalanche 3-0 on Saturday night.

Charlie Coyle also scored and Zach Parise added an empty-netter for the Wild, who spoiled the Avalanche home opener two days after routing Colorado 5-0 in Minnesota.

The Avalanche were one of the top scoring teams in the league last season, but haven’t been able to get anything past Kuemper in six periods.

In back-to-back games against their Central Division rival, the Wild have outshot the Avs 82-46.

Zucker scored in the second period, his first goal since Jan. 16. He had surgery to fix a tendon in his quadriceps in March and missed the rest of the season.

Semyon Varlamov made 31 saves for the Avalanche.

Steel Use Power Play To Slip Past Storm

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Two power play goals in the third period propelled the Chicago Steel (2-2-1) to a 2-1 win over the Tri-City Storm (3-2-0) at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night.

The lone Tri-City goal was scored by forward Joel Herbert in the second period. For Herbert, the tally was his first in USHL play, and his first point in a Storm uniform.

Alec Dillon made 29 saves for the Storm in the loss, coming within minutes of his second consecutive shutout.

Tri-City was ahead 1-0 through two periods, but lost the lead after taking two consecutive bench minor penalties for too many men on the ice.

The Steel capitalized, scoring with the man advantage on both opportunities. Connor Murphy tallied the first goal of the weekend for Chicago and Robby Jackson followed it up with a second power play tally just over two minutes later.

Chicago netminder John Lethemon stopped 34 shots for the Steel to get the win.

Tri-City led the shot count in the game, 35-31.

The Storm are back at home next weekend, as the Green Bay Gamblers come to Kearney for a two-game series. Friday night’s game begins at 7:30, while Saturday’s starts at 3:05.

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Zach Parise scored one of Minnesota’s four goals in the second period and assisted on two others, helping the Wild overwhelm Semyon Varlamov and the Colorado Avalanche 5-0 in the season opener Thursday night.

Jason Pominville scored in the first period on one of Mikael Granlund’s two assists and helped set up a goal by Jared Spurgeon in the second.
