tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm are recognizing former forwards Trevor Moore, Soren Jonzzon and Matt Johnson as their alumni of the month in February. Each month during the season, the team has selected a group of former players based on their contributions on the ice at the next level.

Through 29 games this season, Moore has 16 goals and 15 assists. In his career at Denver, the Thousand Oaks, Calif. native appeared in 71 games and has scored 30 goals and 33 assists. Moore’s 31 points has him 33rd among all Division I skaters. His goal total is also 21st.

Denver is ranked at No. 7 in the latest USCHO.com National Poll with an overall record of 18-10-2, while tied in third place in the highly competitive National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) standings with a mark at 11-8-1-1.

Jonzzon, who is in his junior season with Quinnipiac University, has appeared in 31 games for the Bobcats, already surpassing his previous career high.

The Mountain View, Calif. native has five goals and seven assists for 12 points this season after just five points combined in his freshman and sophomore years. On Feb. 13, Jonzzon recorded the first multi-point game of his collegiate career against St. Lawrence.

Quinnipiac has an overall record of 20-8-4 on the year, and have first place in the ECAC with a conference record of 15-2-3. The Bobcats are currently 10th in the USCHO.com Poll.

This season the forward has 17 points on 12 goals and five assists, while appearing in 25 games. The 17 points is already a career high for Johnson, who did not reach double-digit scoring totals in any of his first three seasons in Columbus.

Predators Beat Avalanche 5-2, Pad NHL’s Best Home Record

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Calle Jarnkrok, Craig Smith, Roman Josi and Filip Forsberg scored to help the Nashville Predators beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game homestand.

Pekka Rinne made 18 saves in his NHL-best 35th win, and the Predators padded their lead atop the NHL standings with 89 points. Nashville also clinched the season series with its Central Division rival at 3-1 with a game remaining.

Nathan MacKinnon and John Mitchell scored for Colorado, which had won two in a row.

Semyon Varlamov started his 17th straight game, but the Avalanche goalie didn’t finish. He was replaced by Reto Berra after giving up four goals on 29 shots.

Colorado coach Patrick Roy pulled Berra during a power play, and Eric Nystrom scored short-handed into an empty net at 8:28 of the third period to make it 5-1.

Tri-City Acquires Green Bay’s Brown In Trade

Chris Brown
Chris Brown

KEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm Head Coach Jim Hulton announced the acquisition of forward Christopher Brown from the Green Bay GamblersMonday along with a sixth round pick in Phase II of the 2015 USHL Phase II Draft in exchange for defenseman Gordi Myer and a player to be named later.

Brown, a sixth round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2014 NHL Draft last summer, is committed to play college hockey at Boston College and was the leading scorer on the Gamblers’ roster with 13 goals and 19 assists in 43 games.

The forward, a native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is in his first USHL season and just celebrated his 19th birthday on Sunday.

“All the reports that we got from the internal scouting we’ve done is that Chris Brown absolutely fits our mold,” said Hulton. “He’s a 200-foot player who is very responsible away from the puck, a front-line penalty killer and power play player, and a top face-off guy. He comes from a hockey pedigree and understands the intangibles that it takes to be a successful player and a successful team member.”

Hulton also said that the common denominator from all the reports he got was that Brown is a responsible player with the kind of character he was looking to add to the team.

“We’ve been looking all season for a bit of a puck distributor in the middle and we think with Chris we’ve achieved that without giving up anything from our identity,” Hulton said.

Myer will head to Green Bay after appearing in 32 games with Tri-City this season.

“It was a difficult decision,” Hulton said. “Any time you have to add, there’s a necessary deletion and there’s a cost to acquire a player of Chris’s ability. We think Gordi has an extremely bright future and is going to be a force to be reckoned with in this league. He was a great teammate, very coachable, and improved in leaps and bounds this season. We wish him all the best and thank him for his time as a member of the Storm.”

Brown is coming off a two-assist game against Youngstown on Sunday. During the 2013-14 season, he played for Cranbrook-Kingswood Upper School in Bloomfield Township, Mich.

“I think this helps us set up for the run to clinch a playoff spot and then hopefully to have success in the playoffs,” Hulton said.

This weekend Western Conference leading Sioux City will travel to Kearney for a two-game series. Friday’s contest begins at 7:30 p.m., whileSaturday’s gets underway at 7:05.

Pedrie’s First Goal Gives Tri-City Win Over Lincoln

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm got their revenge on the Lincoln Stars after Friday night’s shootout loss with a 3-1 win on Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center.

Vince Pedrie’s first Storm goal turned out to be the game-winner, while defenseman Kevin Kerr and forward Nick Master also contributed with tallies in the victory.

With the win, Tri-City improved their home record in Kearney to 16-3-2. The Storm now have 60 points, and are the second-best team in the USHL, two points behind Sioux City.

Goaltender Alec Dillon made 15 saves, allowing just one goal to pick up his 18th win of the season.

The Storm came out of the gate slowly and fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Biagio Lerario at 13:32 of the first period. Assists on the tally went to Chris Dodero and Miguel Fidler, and Tri-City took the deficit into the first intermission.

But the team came out firing in the middle frame, scoring twice while outshooting the Stars 20-2.

Kerr got Tri-City on the board with his fifth goal of the season at 13:31 of the period off a pass from forward Jake Wahlin. Team captain Garrett Gamez picked up the second assist on the tying goal.

Minutes later, Pedrie rocketed a shot past Lincoln netminder Cam Hackett and gave the Storm their first lead of the night at 2-1. Assists were credited to forwards Conner Valesano and Nolan Aibel.

Master gave the Storm the insurance goal they were looking for on the power play at 11:13 of the third period. The tally was the Broomall, Penn. native’s second man-advantage goal of the weekend, and came off a perfect passing play from Mason Appleton along with Gamez.

Both Master and Gamez reached the 30-point mark on the season, while Appleton is one shy with nine goals and 20 assists for 29 points.

Tri-City ended with 39 shots on net, while Lincoln only managed 16.

1980 US Olympic Hockey Team Reunites in Lake Placid

Miracle on Ice USA HockeyLAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — Thirty-five years after the U.S. Olympic hockey team’s stunning gold medal at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics, the once-fuzzy-faced heroes are being feted for their signature accomplishment.

Every surviving member of the hockey team is coming back for a “Relive the Miracle” reunion on Saturday night at Herb Brooks Arena, the hockey rink on Main Street they made famous with one of the most memorable upsets in sports history.

Missing will be Brooks, the Hall of Fame coach who was killed in a car accident in 2003, and rugged defenseman Bob Suter, who died at age 57 in September.

Festivities will include audio, video and still pictures, as well as a discussion of the game with the players. Suter’s jersey also will be raised to the rafters as a tribute.

NBC also plans to anchor its “Hockey Day in America” coverage from Lake Placid on Sunday and feature the team.

Storm Earn Point In Shootout Loss To Lincoln

tcstormLINCOLN, Neb. – A late comeback by the Lincoln Stars (14-23-5) resulted in a 3-2 shootout loss for the Tri-City Storm (26-11-6) at the Ice Box on Friday night.
