Tri-City Earns Shootout Win In Sioux City

tcstormSIOUX CITY, Ia. – The shootout tandem of Chris Wilkie and Cody Milan propelled the Tri-City Storm (26-11-5) to a 3-2 win over the Sioux City Musketeers (28-11-4) on Saturday night at the Tyson Events Center.

Wilkie also scored his 24th goal of the season in the second period, while Garrett Gamez had a power play tally for his 11th of the year.

Storm netminder Jared Rutledge made 37 saves through regulation and overtime, before stopping both attempts he faced in the shootout to get the win.

The game was scoreless through the first 20 minutes, but Tri-City earned a power play with five seconds to go in the frame that carried over to the middle period.

Just 49 seconds into the second, Wilkie blasted a puck past Musketeers’ goalie Collin Olson to make it 1-0. It was the second power play goal of the weekend for Wilkie, who continues to lead the USHL with 13 goals on the man-advantage.

Sioux City tied the game 1-1 at 12:54 of the period with a power play goal of their own by Neal Pionk.

1:05 later, Gamez put the Storm in front 2-1 with another power play goal.

Tri-City forward Mason Appleton had the first assist on both tallies.

After Sioux City’s Joel Janatuinen hit the crossbar on a penalty shot at 16:06, the Musketeers re-tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Robert Carpenter at18:11.

In the second period there was a combined total of 14 penalties, including a double minor to Tri-City’s Joel Herbert for checking from behind, a major head contact penalty to Sioux City’s Jake Durflinger and a flight between Durflinger and Mattias Goransson.

The game stayed even through the third period and overtime and led to the Storm’s sixth shootout victory of the year.

Tri-City gained one point on the Musketeers in the Western Conference, and sits in second place with 57 total points. Sioux City is the top team in the USHL, earning 60 points in 43 games.

Next week the Storm will take on the Lincoln Stars in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday, before heading back to Sioux City for a Sundayafternoon battle. Friday and Saturday’s games start at 7:05 p.m., while Sunday’s contest gets underway at 3:05.

Iginla, Tanguay Score, Avalanche Beat Stars, 4-1

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Alex Tanguay had a goal and an assist, Semyon Varlamov stopped 24 shots and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Dallas Stars 4-1 on Saturday night.

Jarome Iginla and Nathan MacKinnon had goals for the Avalanche, who snapped a four-game skid.

Jason Spezza scored and goaltender Jhonas Enroth had 26 saves in his first start since being acquired from Buffalo on Wednesday.

Dallas came into the game short-handed. Leading scorer Tyler Seguin is out 3-6 weeks with a knee injury suffered in Friday night’s win over Florida, and Ales Hemskey and Patrick Eaves were also out.

The injuries are a big blow to the Stars’ playoff hopes. They came into the night three points out of the last wild card spot but have a tough schedule ahead.

Storm Win Big In Front Of Sell Out Crowd

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – In front of a sell out crowd of 4,256, the Tri-City Storm (25-11-5) scored three goals in the opening period and held on to defeat the Omaha Lancers (22-13-5) by a score of 5-1 on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center.

Forward Nick Master scored twice in the win, while captain Garrett Gamez had a goal and an assist and defenseman Bobby Nardella had three helpers.

Alec Dillon started the game between the pipes for the Storm, but was forced to leave midway through the second period due to injury. Jared Rutledge shut the door in relief, preserving the early Tri-City lead. Both netminders finished the game with 13 saves.

Storm forward Chris Wilkie opened the scoring at 7:08 of the first, scoring his 24th goal of the season on the power play with a shot through traffic that got by Omaha goalie Zach Driscoll. Assists on the tally went to Mason Appleton and Nardella.

Wilkie now leads the USHL with 12 power play goals on the season.

Omaha tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal of their own by Anthony Angello at 12:09, but it was the only offense the Lancers could muster on the night.

Tri-City took the lead when Master scored his first of the game just over two minutes after the Lancers had found the equalizer. The Broomall, Penn. native finished off a perfect passing play from Gamez and Nardella to make it 2-1 Storm.

Later in the period, Gamez scored his 10th goal of the year with assists from Appleton and Nardella. The defenseman started the play by intercepting a pass in neutral ice and moving into the Omaha zone. After finding Appleton, the Green Bay, Wis. native had room to shoot, but elected to pass down low to Gamez, who tapped the puck in for the score.

Master gave Tri-City insurance in the middle period, scoring his second of the night and 15th of the season unassisted on a breakaway.

Storm forward Kyle Eastman sealed the victory with an unassisted empty net goal late in the third period. The tally was the Angola, N.Y. native’s second of the season.

With the win, the Storm have a home record of 15-3-2 in 20 contests at the Viaero Event Center this season.

Tri-City still has hold of second place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 55 total points. They remain four points behind first-place Sioux City.

The Storm will finish their weekend with a game against the Musketeers at the Tyson Event Center on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

Hayes has 3 Points as Rangers beat Avalanche 6-3

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Kevin Hayes had a goal and two assists and the New York Rangers survived a third-period rally to beat the reeling Colorado Avalanche 6-3 on Thursday night.

Rick Nash scored his NHL-leading 34th goal and Cam Talbot stopped 26 shots for New York.

The Rangers have won four of their last six to move into third place in the Metropolitan Division. They are three points behind second-place Pittsburgh and have played one less game than the Penguins.

Jarome Iginla, Gabriel Landeskog and Jan Hejda scored for Colorado, which has lost four straight.

The Avalanche, a week ago sitting just outside the last playoff spot after winning three of four, have fallen into last place in the Central Division. Colorado is 12th in the Western Conference a season after having the second-best record in the West.

Storm Partner With Children’s Heart Foundation

Children's Heart Foundation Nebraska Chapter CHFKEARNEY, Neb. – On Friday night, the Children’s Heart Foundation and the Tri-City Storm are coming together to be part of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

Many families in the Tri-Cities have been affected by Congenital Heart Defects (CHD). The Children’s Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization solely focused on funding research for CHD.

Operated fully by volunteers, all funds raised will go towards the most promising research to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital heart defects.

“Congenital Heart Defect Awareness week is Feb. 7-14, but we need to remember these families that are affected every day of the year,” said Kristi Unick, President of the Nebraska Chapter of the Children’s Heart Foundation. “Creating awareness of CHD will in return assist us in raising funds for our research.”

The Children’s Heart Foundation is selling discounted adult tickets for $12 to Friday’s game with the Omaha Lancers, with the Storm providing a donation on each of the sold seats.

You can purchase your discounted tickets by calling 402.875.0231 or email chfne@childrensheartfoundation.org. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

“We saw this as a win-win project and an organization to align our brand,” said Storm President Greg Shea. “As a result, over 200 supporters will be in attendance on Fridaynight.”

One in 100 babies are born with a CHD, over 40,000 children per year. Congenital heart defects are common and deadly, yet CHD research is grossly under-funded relative to the prevalence of the disease. More than 50 percent of children born with a CHD will require at least one invasive surgery in their lifetime.

Storm netminder Alec Dillon made 21 stops for his squad in defeat, while Tri-City outshot the Black Hawks 34-24 in the contest.

tcstormWATERLOO, Ia. – After 62 minutes of scoreless hockey, Chris Wilkie gave the Tri-City Storm (24-10-5) their tenth consecutive victory with an overtime-winning goal at 2:13 of the extra frame. The 1-0 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks (14-21-4) was Tri-City’s first overtime win of the season and their first win at Young Arena since Feb. 18, 2008.

Dubnyk gets Another Shutout as Wild beat Avalanche 1-0

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Charlie Coyle scored and Devan Dubnyk stopped 18 shots for his fourth shutout in nine starts with Minnesota, leading the Wild to a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night for their fifth straight win.

With just over 5 minutes left in the third period, Dubnyk turned away five Colorado shots on a power play to preserve the lead as Wild fans chanted “Dooooob” for their recently-acquired goalie.

One of those five shots was a wrister by Matt Duchene that sneaked between Dubnyk’s legs, but Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin swiped it out before it crossed the line.

Since being acquired from Arizona rade from Arizona on Jan. 14, Dubnyk is 7-1 with a 1.30 goals-against average to help the Wild climb back into the playoff race.

Minnesota has won five straight in regulation for the first time since March 25, 2013.

Storm Extend Streak To 9 With 3-1 Win In Lincoln

tcstormLINCOLN, Neb. – Three second period goals propelled the Tri-City Storm (23-10-5) to a 3-1 win over the Lincoln Stars (13-20-5) on Friday night at the Ice Box for their ninth straight victory.

Storm captain Garrett Gamez had a goal and an assist in the win, while forward Matthew Freytag scored his 12th tally of the season to extend his current point streak to nine games.

Lincoln got out to a quick start and took an early 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Joe Lappin at 3:46.

The Stars had the first eight shots on net in the game, but Tri-City came alive in the second half of the period outshooting Lincoln 12-9 in the opening frame.

Tri-City then came out and dominated play during the second period, scoring three times and outshooting Lincoln 21-3.

Freytag tied the game up at 1-1 with a quick wrist shot that beat Lincoln goalie Cam Hackett to the top right corner of the net at 4:10. Nick Master picked up the first assist on the goal, while Gamez accounted for the other helper on the play.

The Storm took their first lead of the game on an unassisted short-handed tally by Dan Labosky at 9:50. While defenseman Mattias Goransson was in the box serving an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Labosky raced into the Lincoln end alone on a breakaway and converted to put his team up 2-1.

Labosky now has three total goals on the season, all of them coming while his team was short-handed.

Gamez got his ninth goal of the year to make it 3-1 at 13:43 from Master and defenseman Bobby Nardella. Master found the captain in front of the net for a tap-in.
