Huskers Fall to Michigan, 81-68

Lincoln – Andrew White III and Glynn Watson Jr. led four Huskers in double figures with 15 points apiece, but Nebraska’s second-half rally fell short, as the Huskers fell to Michigan 81-68 Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

White scored 13 points in the second half to total 15 for the game, while Watson also contributed 15 points for the Huskers (12-9, 4-4 Big Ten). Tai Webster pitched in 12 points, five rebounds and five steals, and Shavon Shields added 11 points. Ed Morrow Jr. led the Huskers on the glass with six rebounds. Huskers Outscore Michigan in Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor, Mich. – Jessica Shepard became the first player in Nebraska women’s basketball history to record a 30-point, 20-rebound game to power the Huskers to a 93-81 win at Michigan on Sunday.

Shepard, who tied her career high with 35 points and ripped down a career-high 20 rebounds, scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds in the second half alone to carry the Big Red to their fifth straight win. Huskers Hold off No. 11 Michigan State, 72-71

East Lansing, Mich. –Shavon Shields matched his season high with 28 points, including 19 in the second half, as Nebraska picked up its fourth straight win, a 72-71 win over No. 11 Michigan State at the Breslin Center Wednesday evening.

Shields was spectacular, hitting 12-of-20 shots from the field to lead three Huskers in double figures. Shields, who missed the final 4:24 minutes of the first half after landing on his back, hit 8 of 13 shots after returning to action, as three Huskers finished in double figures. Huskers Win With Defense at Purdue

West Lafayette, Ind. – Nebraska made a huge defensive stand in the final 13 seconds, holding Purdue without a clean shot attempt to escape from Mackey Arena with a 62-61 women’s basketball win on Wednesday night.

The Huskers, who improved to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten, notched their fourth consecutive victory while handing first-place Purdue its second straight loss. The Boilermakers slipped to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference. Continue reading “Huskers Win With Defense at Purdue”

Shepard, Romeo Earn Big Ten Honors

Jessica Shepard captured her seventh Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award of the season, while sophomore Natalie Romeo claimed her second spot on the Big Ten Player-of-the-Week Honor Roll this seen when the conference office announced its weekly awards on Monday.

Huskers Knock Off Illinois, 78-67

Champaign – Nebraska continued its winning ways, shooting 53.6 percent in posting a 78-67 win over Illinois Saturday afternoon.

The Huskers (11-8, 3-3 Big Ten) put four players in double figures, led by Andrew White III’s 21 points and 13 rebounds, as the Nebraska picked up its first win in Champaign since 1921.

Huskers Overcome Scarlet Knights

Lincoln – Jessica Shepard, Natalie Romeo and Rachel Theriot produced big nights, helping Nebraska outscore Rutgers 24-11 in the fourth quarter on the way to a 65-54 women’s basketball win on Saturday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Shepard, a 6-4 freshman forward from Fremont, Neb., put up a game-high 22 points while adding eight rebounds to help the Huskers complete a 2-0 week to improve to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten. University Park, Pa. – Natalie Romeo knocked down a school-record eight three-pointers on her way to a career-high 32 points, shooting Nebraska to its first road win of the year with an 83-78 victory at Penn State on Wednesday night.

Ex-NFL running back Lawrence Phillips found dead in prison

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California prison officials say former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips has been found dead in his prison cell, and they suspect suicide.

Officials say guards at Kern Valley State Prison found the 40-year-old Phillips unresponsive in his cell shortly after midnight Wednesday. He was pronounced dead about 1:30 a.m.

Huskers Top Gophers, 84-59

Lincoln – Shavon Shields’ 24 points and eight rebounds paced Nebraska to an 84-59 romp of Minnesota Tuesday evening.

Shields, who was making his 100th consecutive start for the Huskers, scored 19 of his points in the first half on 6-of-9 shooting, as the Huskers raced to a 21-point halftime lead.

Nebraska took control midway through the first half, using a 29-4 spurt to erase an early deficit, behind Shields, who scored nine points in the run to help NU take a 20-point lead in the first 14 minutes of the contest. Continue reading “Huskers Top Gophers, 84-59”
