USA will face either host Italy or China on Sunday. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. (CT) and will be broadcast live online at UniversalSports.com and will be tape delayed on the Universal Sports channel on TV later in the afternoon.

Huskers Fight Past Spartans for 3-1 Win

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersEast Lansing, Mich. – The No. 8 Nebraska volleyball team battled in a difficult environment to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23) win over Michigan State at Jenison Field House on Friday night.

The Huskers improved to 10-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Big Ten with their third road win this season in as many tries. Michigan State dropped to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in Big Ten play.

The win was the 1,200th in school history for the Huskers and also snapped a two-match losing streak to the Spartans in East Lansing. Nebraska last won in East Lansing in 2011.

Kadie Rolfzen had her fourth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 12 digs. Alicia Ostrander added 12 kills, and Amber Rolfzen had 10 kills. Meghan Haggerty had five kills and four blocks, and Kira Larson had a career-high four kills and three blocks in her first career start. Mary Pollmiller had 43 assists, her most since Sept. 6 against Bakersfield, and Justine Wong-Orantes led four Huskers in double-digit digs with 19.

Nebraska hit .190 for the match but held Michigan State to a .152 clip. The Huskers outblocked the Spartans 8-6 and outdug them 66-61. The Huskers had eight service aces, their second-best output this season.

The Huskers fell behind 4-1 in set one and despite answering with three straight points were unable to grab an early lead. The Spartans extended the lead to 18-13 with a 6-2 spurt, as the Huskers suffered four service errors to that point. But then Nebraska got back-to-back kills from Ostrander before Michigan State hit long to cut it to 18-16. After Michigan State committed a net violation, Kadie Rolfzen killed and Alexa Ethridge continued her excellent serving run with an ace. Michigan State committed an attacking error, and Haggerty and Pollmiller stuffed the Spartans for a 21-18 lead before the Spartans misfired again, pushing the Nebraska run to 9-0 and the lead to 22-18. Michigan State cut the deficit in half with consecutive points, but that was the last time the Spartans would score in the set as the Huskers completed the comeback with a 25-20 win, ending the set on a 12-2 run.

In set two, the Huskers broke free from a 3-3 deadlock with a 4-0 run to go up 7-3, with two Kadie Rolfzen kills starting and finishing the run. Larson tallied a block with Pollmiller and a kill to give Nebraska an 11-6 advantage. Kadie Rolfzen’s seventh kill of the match pushed the NU lead to 15-8. A 4-0 run put Nebraska up 20-10 after another Kadie Rolfzen kill. An Ostrander kill gave the Huskers set point at 24-17 and NU finished things off at 25-18 on a Spartan error. The Huskers hit .351 in the second set with 16 kills and just three errors.

The Huskers led 6-4 in set three before Michigan State put together a 6-0 run for a 10-6 lead. But the Huskers didn’t go away, as Kadie Rolfzen and Ostrander posted kills, and Kadie Rolfzen served an ace to cut it to 10-9 and force a Spartan timeout. But out of the timeout, Michigan State scored five straight to go up 15-9 and cause NU to take a timeout. A service ace by Kristen Muir out of the timeout and a Husker attacking error continued the run at 7-0 though, as Nebraska fell down 17-9. The Huskers pulled within 22-20 on kills by Amber Rolfzen and Pollmiller before a Townsend service ace. But after a Spartan timeout, Townsend’s serve found the net and gave MSU a 23-20 lead. Kadie Rolfzen’s kill made it 23-21, but Michigan State closed out the 25-22 win.

The Huskers used a 4-0 spurt in set four to rally from a 10-8 deficit and go up 12-10, with Ethridge again on the service line. Michigan State reclaimed a 14-13 lead though before Haggerty killed to level the score. The Spartans stayed in front though at 17-15 before hitting wide twice to tie it at 17-17 again. Tied at 19-19, Sydney Townsend came up the most difficult of her career-high 11 digs to keep a play alive that resulted in a 20-19 Husker lead. Haggerty and Pollmiller thwarted a Spartan attack for a 21-19 lead. Later, Amber Rolfzen came up with a big kill to give Nebraska 23-21 lead, but the Huskers then hit long to make it 23-22. Kadie Rolfzen stepped up and recorded the final two points of the match for NU to give the Huskers a 25-23 fourth-set victory.

The Huskers finish their Michigan road trip in Ann Arbor against Michigan on Sunday at Noon (CT).

Day Suffers Season-Ending Knee Injury

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – University of Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles announced Thursday that freshman forward B.J. Day suffered season-ending injury to his left knee during practice this week.

The torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was revealed during an MRI examination Thursday, and men’s basketball athletic trainer R.J. Pietig said that surgery will be scheduled in the near future. Day will miss the 2014-15 season and will apply for a medical redshirt to have four years of eligibility remaining.

“It is difficult because B.J. has worked hard in the offseason to get ready for the start of practice,” Miles said. “We look forward to him beginning his rehab, and our goal is to have him ready for the start of next season.”

Day, who is the son of former Husker standout Bernard Day, played at Lincoln Southeast High School, averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season to earn second-team Class A all-state honors.

BTN to Debut New Film “Unbeaten: The Life of Brook Berringer”

Brook Berringer Nebraska Huskers UnbeatenCHICAGO – The story of Brook Berringer, a beloved University of Nebraska quarterback who is best remembered for his resilience and selflessness in the face of adversity and his tragic death two days before the NFL Draft, is legendary in the Cornhusker state.

On Oct. 18, viewers across the country will learn more about his life and enduring spirit when BTN Originals debuts Unbeaten: The Life of Brook Berringer, as told through the eyes of the producers who bring fans the BTN signature series The Journey and Tiebreaker, BTN’s first feature-length documentary.  The hour-long documentary, presented by Physicians Mutual, airs at approximately 10:30 PM ET, immediately following the Nebraska at Northwestern game on BTN/BTN2Go.

Bill Friedman, BTN’s coordinating producer for original programming, said Unbeaten is just not a sports story, but a story about human character. “Brook was way ahead of his time. He built a reputation for giving back, and he is beloved because so many think he represents what a Nebraskan should be. His life is a great college football story that happens to take place in Nebraska.”

Berringer began the 1994 season as the Huskers’ backup quarterback but was thrust into the starting role when Heisman Trophy candidate Tommie Frazier was diagnosed with blood clots. Berringer helped lead the team to seven straight wins and a berth in the Orange Bowl against Miami. While Frazier returned to start the game, Berringer entered in the second quarter and helped spark a comeback. The win capped off the undefeated season, and gave legendary Nebraska Head Coach Tom Osborne his first National Championship.

As the 1995 season dawned, Berringer and Frazier engaged in a spirited battle for the starting job – a job that Frazier eventually won by a narrow margin. Berringer selflessly accepted his backup role that season, as Frazier and the Huskers rolled to a second straight National Championship.

The following spring, two days prior to the 1996 NFL Draft, Berringer lost control of the two-seater plane he was piloting and died when the plane crashed. He was 22 years old.

Unbeaten features rare, archival footage of Berringer on camera, highlights of some key Nebraska games leading up to the National Championship and interviews with Frazier, Osborne, and Brook’s mother, Jan Berringer, who shares some of the thousands of letters she received in the wake of his passing.

The BTN Originals crew also was in Lincoln this September, when the 1994 championship team was honored prior to the Huskers’ game against Miami. The crew captured exclusive footage and an interview with Berringer’s teenage nephew, who walked onto the field wearing a No. 18 jersey in honor of the uncle he never met.

Unbeaten is directed by Matthew Engel and Kevin Shaw, who together also directed Tiebreaker, the story of the 1973 Ohio State-Michigan football game that ended in a 10-10 tie and its controversial aftermath.

The premiere of Unbeaten will have limited commercial interruptions.

Robert Kokesh

Senior 174-pounder Robert Kokesh will face Pittsburgh’s Tyler Wilps in the NWCA All-Star Classic at the Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Kokesh, a two-time All-American, will begin his senior season at the event, as he joins teammate James Green (157) at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Kokesh finished fourth at the 2014 NCAA Championships after capturing the 174-pound Big Ten title. The Wagner, S.D., native took third place in 2013, and holds a career record of 105-14 heading into his final season in a Husker singlet.

Kokesh squared off against Wilps in the consolation quarterfinals of last year’s national tournament, with Kokesh emerging victorious by a 2-1 decision in the first tiebreaker. Wilps notched a seventh-place finish, and holds a career record of 70-28, as he starts the 2014-15 season. Wilps, a two-time NCAA qualifier, captured the 174-pound ACC title in 2014, and will be a senior this season.

Kokesh compiled a 37-3 record last season, which included a perfect 14-0 dual record. He led the team in dual points (67) and pins (9), while adding five technical falls and 10 major decisions.

Kokesh and Green become the 30th and 31st Husker wrestlers to compete at the NWCA All-Star Classic and the first since 2009 when Jordan Burroughs, Stephen Dwyer and Craig Brester all competed.

The NWCA has already announced six other matches for this year’s event and will reveal three others over the coming weeks leading up to the competition.

The Huskers open the season by hosting their annual Intrasquad on Friday, Oct. 31 at the Devaney Center at 5 p.m. Nebraska’s first dual is set for Friday, Nov. 7 at Wyoming, starting at 4 p.m. (CT).
