Huskers Make Road Trip To Wisconsin

huskersoccerThe Nebraska soccer team (4-3-1) seeks its first Big Ten win of the season when the Huskers travel to Madison, Wis., for their game against Wisconsin on Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT).

The Huskers and Badgers are meeting for the seventh time in series history, with NU holding a 4-1-1 advantage. Each of the last two matches has gone extra time, but the Huskers ultimately claimed victory in both instances. Last season, NU notched a 2-1 triumph in double overtime.

Saturday night’s game will be streamed on BTN Plus. The game marks Nebraska’s first conference road game of the season and its second road game overall, as the Huskers came from behind to top Marquette on Aug. 31 by a 3-2 margin.

Last Time Out: Huskers Tie Big Ten Opener, Fall to Illinois on Sunday

Nebraska opened its Big Ten season with a pair of home matches on Thursday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 14. The Huskers tied Northwestern in the first game, 1-1, before dropping a 3-0 decision to Illinois.

Against the Wildcats, Northwestern’s Sami Schrakamp struck first in the 12th minute to put the Wildcats up 1-0. With time winding down in the game, Katie Kraeutner scored off an assist from Jaycie Johnson in the 88th minute to tie the game. Neither team scored in the extra time.

Against the Fighting Illini, the Huskers took six shots but failed to score in a 3-0 setback. Illinois’ Allison Stucky scored in the 40th minute, while Jannelle Flaws added two goals, scoring in the 71st and 80th minute.

Scouting the Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin is 7-1-0 on the season after suffering its first loss last weekend to Michigan on a last-second goal. Prior to the loss, the Badgers had outscored their opponents 19-2 in their first seven games. Wisconsin opened conference play with a 2-1 overtime victory on the road over Michigan State on Sept. 12.

Goalkeeper Genevieve Richard has compiled 20 saves over 641 minutes of play to lead the Badgers’ defense. Cara Walls (seven goals) and Kinley McNicoll (six goals) have led Wisconsin’s offense, while Kodee Williams, Becca Harrison and Marisa Kresge have each scored twice.

Huskers Showing Ability to Score Late

Nebraska has scored in the 75th minute or later in six of its eight games this season. This past weekend, Katie Kraeutner delivered in the 88th minute for the Huskers against Northwestern in their Big Ten opener. In addition to Kraeutner’s goal, Jaycie Johnson has scored twice in the 75th minute or later, while Courtney Claassen, Caroline Flynn and Sydney Miramontez have each added one during that time stretch.

The Huskers failed to score down the stretch against Illinois and Oklahoma, but made late goals in each of their first four games of the season. Overall, NU is 4-1-1 when scoring in the last 15 minutes. The Huskers are 0-2-0 when they don’t.

Schatz Filling Goalkeeper Role

Sophomore Kelly Schatz has started all eight games at goalkeeper for the Huskers this season, playing over 714 minutes. Schatz has 23 saves and has earned two complete game shutouts. She also contributed to a third NU shutout as she played the first 48 minutes against North Dakota. Schatz has given up 10 goals on the season, but holds a .697 save percentage.

Johnson Continues to Produce on Offense

Nebraska’s leading goal scorer from 2013, Jaycie Johnson, started 2014 where she left off from last season and has six goals through eight games.

Johnson scored two goals in each of the first three weekends, managing a pair of scores in both the Marquette and North Dakota matches. She scored once against SMU and once while facing DePaul.

A Lake Winnebago, Mo. native, Johnson has taken 35 shots this season, 24 of which have been on goal.

Huskers Respond to Double OT Heartbreaker with 4-0 Triumph

Nebraska went 1-1 at home in its third weekend of play, falling to No. 20 Oklahoma in double overtime on Friday, Sept. 5, before dominating North Dakota by a 4-0 margin on Sunday, Sept. 7.

Against the Sooners, Katie Kraeutner scored in the sixth minute to put NU up early, but Oklahoma tied the score 1-1 in the 71st minute with Ayana O’Neal’s goal. Despite Nebraska controlling on offense to start the second overtime, Oklahoma’s defense managed to withstand the pressure and scored in the 107th minute for the win.

On Sunday, the Huskers outshot North Dakota 32-2, as Jaycie Johnson scored twice, and Mayme Conroy and Courtney Claassen each added one goal in the 4-0 win.

Both of Johnson’s goals came in the first three minutes of the second half. Conroy scored NU’s first goal of the game in the ninth minute. Claassen scored off a rebound in the 76th minute for her first career goal. Caroline Flynn recorded two assists.

Huskers Sweep Butler, Marquette

Nebraska took down Butler, 1-0, on Friday, Aug. 29 at the Nebraska Soccer Field before defeating Marquette, 3-2, on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis.

The Huskers outshot the Bulldogs 17-2, but it wasn’t until Caroline Flynn’s goal in the 83rd minute that NU got on the scoreboard. Flynn scored from 30 yards out to the top left corner of the net from the right side of the field. Goalkeeper Kelly Schatz earned two saves during the shutout.

Against the Golden Eagles, Nebraska trailed 2-0 before scoring three goals in the final 26 minutes en route to a 3-2 triumph. Jaycie Johnson scored twice, making her first goal in the 65th minute before adding the game winner off an assist from Caroline Gray in the 83rd minute. Mayme Conroy added a goal for the Huskers in the 69th minute.

Huskers Split Opening Weekend Games

Nebraska opened the regular season on Friday, Aug. 22 with a 4-0 victory over SMU before falling to DePaul, 2-1, on Sunday, Aug. 24 at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

Against the Mustangs, goalkeeper Kelly Schatz earned a shutout in her first career start at the position. She compiled five saves, four of which came in the second half. Caroline Gray, Caroline Flynn, Jaycie Johnson and Sydney Miramontez each scored for the Huskers in the home opener.

Against the Blue Demons, Johnson scored the lone goal for the Huskers in the 89th minute off an assist from Flynn, but DePaul had already built a 2-0 lead. Elise Wyatt scored for the Blue Demons in the 16th minute before Abby Reed added a goal in the 85th minute.

Final Season at Nebraska Soccer Field

The Huskers are in their 10th and final season at the Nebraska Soccer Field before moving into the Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex next season. Since moving to campus in 2005, NU has compiled a 66-27-13 record and has five home games remaining in 2014.

2014 Season Outlook

Nebraska’s 2014 team includes five seniors in Head Coach John Walker’s 21st season at the helm of the school’s soccer program. The Huskers also welcomed back All-Big Ten second-team member Jaycie Johnson, who is a sophomore in 2014 after leading the team with 17 goals last season. The Huskers added 12 newcomers in the offseason in addition to their 12 returning letterwinners from 2013.

Huskers to Make Three BTN Appearances

Nebraska appeared on the Big Ten Network on Thursday, Sept. 11 and will make two more showings this season. The Huskers host Big Ten newcomer Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m., on BTN. The game was originally set for 1 p.m., but was changed for TV scheduling. NU’s final regular season appearance on the network comes at Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 2:30 p.m.

Huskers Rally for 3-1 Win Against Creighton

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLincoln – The No. 9 Nebraska volleyball team rallied from a slow start to defeat the Creighton Bluejays 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20) in the first meeting between the teams since 2011 before 8,060 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Wednesday night.

The Huskers improved to 6-2 with their sixth straight win. Creighton fell to 6-4. Kadie Rolfzen led the Huskers with a season-high 16 kills and added 10 digs and five blocks. Alicia Ostrander provided a big spark off the bench, coming on in the middle of the third set and finishing with seven kills and two blocks. She hit a career-best .353 and gave the Huskers a boost when they had just let Creighton back into set three.

Amber Rolfzen had seven kills and seven digs, and Kelsey Fien had six kills. Meghan Haggerty had five kills and six of Nebraska’s season-high-tying14 blocks. Mary Pollmiller had 39 assists and eight digs, and Justine Wong-Orantes had 18 digs.

The Huskers hit .134, the lowest they’ve hit in a match that they’ve won in the John Cook era (dating back to 2000). They were able to secure the win by holding the Bluejays to a .126 hitting percentage. Both teams had 31 attacking errors, but the Bluejays had 12 service errors to just four for the Huskers. Nebraska outdug Creighton 59-54, and blocks were nearly identical with Creighton holding a 14.5-14.0 advantage. Creighton’s Kelli Browning had 17 kills and hit .400 on the night.

The Huskers fell behind 6-3 in the first set but came back to tie it at 8-8 on Melanie Keil’s kill down the right side. Creighton went up 11-9, 13-11 and 14-12 before the Huskers rallied to tie the set each time. The Jays continued to fend off the Husker rallies, but with CU leading 19-17, the Bluejays served long and then tipped wide after a long rally to even the set again at 19-19. But out of a timeout, Lauren Smith killed the Husker momentum for a 20-19 lead, and Nebraska hit long to fall down 21-19. Kadie Rolfzen’s kill brought NU within 21-20, but Smith terminated at the middle of the net and the Bluejays blocked an NU attack to go up 23-20, and the Jays closed out the 25-21 win from there. NU hit .000 in the first set with nine attacking errors, while Creighton hit .135 with eight errors.

The Huskers trailed 3-2 in the second set but went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-3 lead. The run began with a CU service error, kills by Amber Rolfzen, Kadie Rolfzen and two CU attacking errors, forcing a Bluejay timeout. The timeout didn’t stop NU this time though, as Haggerty thwarted a Creighton attack and Wong-Orantes served an ace for a 9-3 Husker lead. Creighton then hit wide again and trailed 10-3, and Kadie Rolfzen swung down from the outside to finish the 9-0 run. Creighton gradually crept back into the set and cut it to 18-17 on a back row kill from Melanie Jereb to force an NU timeout. Kadie Rolfzen hammered down a kill to put the Huskers up 19-17, and Pollmiller caught Creighton by surprise with a dump to the back row for a 20-17 lead. Haggerty’s fourth block of the match made it 21-17. The Jays got back within 23-22 to make it interesting, but Fien banged down her sixth kill of the match, and Pollmiller served up a clutch ace to end the set at 25-22. NU hit .200 in the second set with 14 kills and seven errors. Creighton actually hit better in the second set (.189) than it did the first, but the Jays committed three service errors and two receiving errors.

Cecilia Hall got NU off and running in set three with two blocks and a kill to help the Huskers build a 7-1 lead and force a Bluejay timeout. But Creighton rallied to tie the set at 11-11 and force an NU timeout. After a lengthy rally, CU hit long to give NU a 12-11 lead, and Ostrander provided a solo block immediately off the bench for a 13-11 lead. Ostrander, Kadie Rolfzen and Hall recorded consecutive kills to put NU up 16-12. Haggerty and Kadie Rolfzen teamed up for a block to make it 18-13, then Kadie Rolfzen caught Creighton off guard with a sneaky soft touch just over the net to make it 19-13. Ostrander continued to provide a spark off the bench in the third set with a kill to make it 22-16 and another for a 23-17 lead. Amber Rolfzen finished off the set with a kill to give the Huskers a 25-20 win and the 2-1 lead in the match.

The teams battled in the fourth set with neither grabbing more than a two-point lead until the Huskers went up 13-9 after consecutive kills by Ostrander. NU gained separation at 16-10 on a combined block from Hall and Kadie Rolfzen. Creighton got within three points on two occasions, but Nebraska held off the Jays for the 25-20 match-clinching win in set four.

Nebraska finishes non-conference play by hosting No. 2 Texas on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports center. The match will be broadcast on NET.

Miami, No. 24 Nebraska will Harken Glorious Pasts

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Miami will play at No. 24 Nebraska on Saturday in a meeting of programs that dominated college football in the 1980s and ’90s.

Four of the last five Miami-Nebraska games were in bowls, and the winner emerged as that year’s national champion.

The stakes will be considerably lower when they meet in Lincoln. Nebraska (3-0) hasn’t won a conference title since 1999 or played in a BCS game since it was a controversial pick to go to the 2002 Rose Bowl. The Hurricanes won the last of their five national titles at that matchup.

Unranked Miami (2-1) hasn’t won a conference championship or played in a BCS game since the 2003 season.

Tom Osborne won his first of three titles with Nebraska’s Orange Bowl victory over the Hurricanes in 1995.

Huskers Looking to Limit Big Plays

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team continued its preparations for their primetime showdown Saturday night with the Miami Hurricanes, as the Huskers conducted a 1-hour and 50-minute practice Tuesday afternoon inside of the Hawks Championship Center and outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields.

Defensive coordinator John Papuchis met with media members after practice, showing a great deal of respect to the athletic Hurricanes.

“They have a lot of weapons at every skilled position, they have guys that can take it to the house every time they touch the ball,” Papuchis said. “They are good upfront, so it is going to be a challenge, it is the best offense we have played this season.”

Miami will likely start a true freshman at quarterback. Brad Kaaya was named the starting quarterback by head coach Al Golden during fall camp and has started each of the Hurricanes first three games.

Kaaya is a native of West Hills, Calif., and a graduate of Chaminade High, where he was a teammate of current Husker sophomore running back Terrell Newby.

“He is efficient with the ball, he doesn’t look like a freshman out there playing. He doesn’t make a ton of mistakes, he does not look nervous or rattled in the pocket,” he said. “I have been impressed with him.”

Papuchis said what scares him the most about Miami’s offense is their big-play ability.

“They are athletic enough at every skill position that if you miss a tackle it could turn into a touchdown,” Papuchis said. “They have great speed at wideout, so I am concerned with balls being thrown over our head, but our guys are aware of it and we have to tackle well to limit explosive plays.”

The Nebraska football team will continue its week of preparation Wednesday as the Huskers prepare for their Saturday night showdown with the Miami Hurricanes. Kickoff between the two national powers will be nationally televised on ESPN2 at 7pm (CT).

Three Huskers Earn Spots on Baseball America’s Top Prospects List

husker baseballLincoln – A total of three Huskers were named to Baseball America’s Top Prospect List from across 20 summer leagues and Team USA. Sophomore Ryan Boldt (Northwoods), senior pitcher Josh Roeder (Coastal Plains) and senior catcher Tanner Lubach (MINK) each earned a top-10 ranking in their respective league. A total of 238 players were ranked, as the publication ranked 30 prospects in the Cape Cod League, the top 23 prospects for Team USA and the top 10 prospects in 18 other summer college leagues.

Boldt was tabbed as the top prospect in the Northwoods League following a stellar freshman season for the Huskers in 2014 that saw him earn freshman All-America honors for three publications and he was invited to Team USA’s Collegiate National Team Training Camp.

A native of Red Wing, Minn., Boldt was an unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten Freshman team and a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree in 2014. He started in center field in 55 of NU’s 62 games and hit leadoff for the Huskers 29 times on the year, including the final 28 games of the season. NU posted a 22-7 record on the year with Boldt in the leadoff spot. Boldt finished the year third on the team with 74 hits, two shy of Pat Kelly’s team-high 76 hits. Boldt led NU in runs scored (47), triples (6) and stolen bases (7). He ranked second on the team with 12 doubles and notched 31 RBIs, including a team-high 20 RBIs with two outs.

After spending time with Team USA, Boldt returned to his native Minnesota and played for the Rochester Honkers. In 28 games he hit .333 with 37 hits, including five doubles, two triples and 11 RBIs. He struck out just 19 times, while walking 20 times, and stole 14 bases.

Roeder spent his summer in the Coastal Plain League playing for the Edenton Steamers and he was named the No. 2 prospect in the league behind Stanford sophomore Cal Quantrill. During the summer season, Roeder was named a league all-star and went on to earn Defensive Player of the Game honors at the game.

As a junior in 2014, Roeder posted 12 saves  to increase his career total to 18. He will enter the 2015 ranked second in school history in career saves, trailing school record holder Brett Jensen (31). On the year in 2014, Roeder tossed 20.1 inning over 22 appearances and notched 21 strikeouts to six walks.

During the summer Roeder ranked second in the Coastal Plain League with 14 saves, while notching a 1.71 ERA. He totaled 38 strikeouts to six walks in 21.0 innings of work.

Lubach was limited to just 26 at bats with the St. Joseph Mustangs this past summer, but was still ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the league. The Lincoln native has served as the Huskers’ primary catcher each of the past two seasons, starting 92 games since arriving on campus. The Lincoln native saw his average rise over 40 points from his sophomore to junior season, while also hitting more doubles and home runs.

Lubach was his best for the Mustangs during the NBC World Series in August. He hit .500 (5-for-10) in three games at the national tournament, including a 3-for-4 performance in the team’s opening win over the Fairbanks Goldpanners.

The BTN schedule includes 11 games aired on BTN and available nationally, including basic cable channels across the Big Ten region, and two games online on BTN Plus, which is a subscription-based service available on computers, smartphones and tablets as part of the BTN2Go app.

The Huskers’ first BTN appearance of the season will be on Sunday, Dec. 7, when Creighton makes its first visit to Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. central. The Huskers’ other non-conference appearance will be on Saturday, Dec. 13, when the Huskers host the Cincinnati Bearcats. Tipoff for that game is at 8 p.m. central.

During Big Ten play, the Huskers will make a minimum of nine BTN appearances, beginning with the Big Ten opener against Indiana on New Year’s Eve. Tipoff time for the only matchup between the Huskers and Hoosiers will be set in early December. Other BTN games include two contests against Illinois (Jan. 11 and March 4) and Minnesota (Jan. 20 and Jan. 31) as well as contests at Iowa (Jan. 5), vs. Northwestern (Feb. 3), at Purdue (Feb. 15) and at Maryland (Feb. 19).   In addition, other games could be selected by BTN during its Wildcard Weekends on Feb. 21-22 and March 8-9.  BTN is available in more than 60 million homes in the U.S. and Canada.

The two BTN Plus games, which are live games produced by students at Big Ten universities as part of its Student U initiative, will be the exhibition game against Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., and the season opener against Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Nov. 16.  The start time for the Nebraska-Northern Kentucky game will be announced at a later date.

Other previously announced conference games included the Super Tuesday games at Michigan (Jan. 27) and vs. Wisconsin (Feb. 10), while CBS and ESPN are expected to announce their selections in the near future.  The remainder of the television and internet packages by Big Ten television and Internet partners will be available in the coming day. All 18 Husker Big Ten conference games will be televised nationally on BTN or the Big Ten’s other television partners.
