Huskers to Make Two Super Tuesday Appearances in 2014-15

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – Nebraska will make its first Super Tuesday appearance since 2011 this upcoming season, as ESPN and the Big Ten Conference announced its Super Tuesday schedule Wednesdayafternoon.

The Huskers, who return all five starters from a team that went 19-13 in 2013-14 including All-Big Ten performers Shavon Shields and Terran Petteway, will make a pair of Super Tuesdayappearances this season on ESPN. The nine-game schedule is traditionally one of ESPN’s highest-rated basketball series during the season.

Nebraska will travel to Ann Arbor to take on defending Big Ten regular-season champion Michigan on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. (central). On Tuesday, Feb. 10, Pinnacle Bank Arena will host its first Super Tuesday game when the Huskers welcome Final Four participant Wisconsin to town. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. (central).

The only Big Ten programs making more Super Tuesday appearances in 2014-15 are Wisconsin (four) and Michigan (three).  Nebraska’s only previous Super Tuesday appearance since joining the Big Ten came in 2011, when the Huskers played Wisconsin in their Big Ten debut at the Devaney Center.

Today’s games were the first announced regular-season Big Ten Conference games for the 2014-15 season. The full conference schedule will be announced later this summer.

Pelini Praises Spirited Competition

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team held the first of two Wednesday practices with a 90-minute morning practice at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields outside of the Hawks Championship Center.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media following practice, noting that he has been impressed with what he has seen so far out of the team.

“We have made good progress, and we have good competition going on,” Pelini said.

With the loss of sophomore linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey, there has been some shuffling in the linebacker corps. Redshirt freshmen Marcus Newby and Courtney Love both have impressed Pelini and will likely be contributors for the Blackshirt defense.

“Newby is playing the Buck linebacker and Love is playing the Will, Pelini said. “Both of those guys have made some good progress over the last few weeks. Those guys are getting better.”

Newby, a North Potomac, Md., native, was a highly touted linebacker out of Quince Orchard High School, the same high school that produced recent NU defensive end and current Houston Texan Jason Ankrah. Love is a Youngstown, Ohio, native and graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, Pelini’s alma mater.

Pelini also gave high praise to the Huskers’ depth at defensive line, noting that a few freshman have been impressive.

“There is a lot of good competition going on there as well,” Pelini said of the defensive line. “Those guys are getting better, (Joe) Keels, (A.J.) Natter, (Jack) Gangwish and some of the true freshmen,” Pelini said. “(Mick) Stoltenberg, he has not played a lot of defensive end and is a little behind but I think he is going to be good. (Peyton) Newell has also done a nice job over the last couple of days.”

Pelini noted that it has been highly competitive when the offense and defense have faced each other during practice.

“They have gone back-and-forth a lot,” he said. “I think a couple of days ago the offense really got after the defense and it was really vice-versa last night. It has been pretty spirited competition.

“The thing is, it is about executing both offensively and defensively. It is not about who wins and losses in a particular drill. We are looking at execution on both sides of the ball, guys doing the right thing. We are mixing a lot of things personnel wise, and I am seeing a lot of good things but I see we have a ways to go.”

Nebraska fans are reminded about their opportunity to be on hand at Memorial Stadium as the Huskers kick off the 2014 season. Fans can purchase the Cornhusker Kickoff Combo package for the Florida Atlantic game on Aug. 30 and the matchup with McNeese State on Sept. 6. The two-game package can be purchased at Huskers.com for $100. Fans can also purchase single-game tickets to all games other than the Miami and Minnesota games at Huskers.com.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. knows expectations for him will be higher this season.

Armstrong had never taken a meaningful snap when he was thrust into the starter’s job after Taylor Martinez was injured last year. Armstrong helped the Cornhuskers to a nine-win season that ended with a bowl victory over Georgia.

Armstrong says he feels more like a leader now.

Ameer Abdullah, the nation’s top returning rusher, remains the top offensive threat for seventh-year coach Bo Pelini.

The Huskers are playing in the new Big Ten West Division. They’re looking for their first conference title since 1999.

Their opener is Aug. 30 at home against Florida Atlantic.

Huskers Ranked Seventh in Preseason Poll, Tickets Go On Sale Aug. 20

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersThe Nebraska volleyball team came in at No. 7 in the preseason AVCA Coaches’ poll, released on Monday. The Huskers return all but one starter from last year’s team, which finished with a 26-7 record, a trip to the NCAA Regional Final and a No. 7 final ranking.

The preseason poll had a Big Ten flare, as seven conference teams earned a spot in the top 25, while Michigan was receiving votes. Six of the top 12 teams in the preseason poll were from the Big Ten Conference. Defending national champion Penn State was picked first, followed by Texas, Stanford, Washington and USC. Wisconsin, the 2013 national runner-up, came in one spot ahead of Nebraska at No. 6, while Purdue was ranked eighth. BYU and Florida, respectively, rounded out the top 10.

With the release of the first 2014 weekly poll, the Huskers have now been ranked in each of the AVCA’s 462 all-time polls, dating back to 1982. Nebraska has been ranked in the top 10 in 418 of those 462 polls, the highest total of any team in the country.

Nebraska’s ranking will be put to the test throughout this season. The Huskers will face a ranked opponent in 13 of their 29 matches this season, including six matchups with top-10 opponents. NU will face the top three teams in the preseason poll a total of four times, beginning with a contest against No. 3 Stanford in the second game of the season at the Devaney Center on Sunday, Aug. 31.

The Huskers open their season on Friday, Aug. 29, against 13th-ranked Florida State Seminoles. The back-to-back matchups with FSU and Stanford are part of the AVCA Showcase at the Devaney Center.

RB Adam Taylor Latest Neb Player Out with Injury

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska reserve running back Adam Taylor is out indefinitely with a broken ankle.

Coach Bo Pelini said Monday that Taylor was injured in practice Saturday. Taylor redshirted last season and was expected to compete for playing time behind Ameer Abdullah.

Offensive coordinator Tim Beck said Taylor followed up his strong spring with impressive work the first week of preseason practice. Taylor was competing with Imani Cross and Terrell Newby for carries.

The Cornhuskers also have lost nickel back Charles Jackson and linebacker Michael Rose to injuries the past week, and safety LeRoy Alexander was suspended for the season for an undisclosed reason.

Taylor starred at Katy (Texas) High, running for 2,754 yards and 45 touchdowns his senior season while leading his team to a state championship.

Beck Likes Overall QB Progression

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team began its second full week of fall camp Monday morning with a 90-minute practice at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields outside of the Hawks Championship Center.

Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck met with the media following practice, noting that he has really liked how the three NU quarterbacks have progressed so far this camp.

“I like it. I like the way they are improving—their decision making, getting rid of the ball on time,” Beck said. “I am really pleased. That is probably one of the groups that has made the biggest jump in the last three days.”

According to Beck, the quarterbacks are starting to grasp the offensive playbook much better, making more time for the players to review the plays, instead of learning the plays.

“I think they have, like anything, it’s hard, they have a lot of their plate and are a little bit rusty,” he said. “It is making more sense to them. We have been able to get everything in so you can see their development and growth now.”

After practice, Head Coach Bo Pelini announced that redshirt freshman running back Adam Taylor suffered a broken ankle Saturday, giving no timetable on his return. Beck mentioned that he feels bad for Taylor, and hopes that he will return even stronger than ever.

“I feel bad for Adam. He has had a great Spring and was really playing well this fall. My heart goes out for him. He has worked extremely hard, but on the same token, it is a very loaded position for us.”

A Husker newcomer that has been garnering a lot of attention at practice has been freshman wide receiver De’Mornay Pierson-El. An Alexandria, Va., native, Pierson-El’s has impressed the catching the coaching staff with his dynamic playmaking ability.

“He is a very electrifying player. I know special-teams wise we are looking at him as well,” Beck said. “He has helped us. He is a little overwhelmed as most freshmen are, but he’s coming.”

Nebraska will take a break before going back out on the practice field for their second practice of the day. The Huskers will be practicing ‘two-a-days’ for the remainder of the week.

Nebraska Loses Its 3rd Defensive Player in 3 Days

Michael Rose

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska middle linebacker Michael Rose will undergo knee surgery next week, making him the third key member of the defense in three days to be ruled out for the season.

Coach Bo Pelini said Saturday that Rose injured his knee in a non-contact drill Friday.

Pelini announced Thursday that the Cornhuskers had lost nickel back Charles Jackson to a knee injury, and on Friday the Athletic Department announced that safety LeRoy Alexander would be suspended for the season.

Pelini said he’s confident the defense “will be just fine” because of the quality of players competing for open positions.
