He opened competition with nine points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of work a 99-63 win over Guyana on Tuesday and had eight points, four rebounds, four steals and a pair of blocked shots in 19 minutes in an 81-77 win over Barbados last night.

The British Virgin Islands will take on the Virgin Islands tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m. (CT) in a matchup of unbeaten teams in Group B, while both teams will advance to the semifinals as the top two finishers in the group.

The semifinals take place on Friday with the championship round set for Saturday.  Antigua, Bahamas, Cuba and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are the other nations in the eight-team event. The top three teams earn berths to Centrobasket Championship where they compete for spots in the FIBA Americas Championship, from which they can qualify for the FIBA World Cup/Championship or the Olympic Games.

Smith played a major role in the Huskers reaching the 2014 NCAA Tournament, as he played in all 32 games and averaged 5.4 points on a team-high 52 percent shooting and 4.8 rebounds per game to rank third on the team in rebounding. Despite making only one start, Smith led the Huskers with three double-doubles and ranked ninth among Big Ten played with five double-figure rebound efforts in 2013-14.

This is the second time he has played for the British Virgin Islands in International competition, as he played in five games in the 2009 Caribbean Basketball Championships for his native country.

Lady Huskers to Face Utah in Return to Devaney Center

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska women’s basketball team plans to honor its first NCAA Tournament team when the Huskers return to the Bob Devaney Sports Center to take on Utah on Sunday, Nov. 23.

The game, which was announced by Nebraska on June 25, will mark the Huskers’ first game at the Devaney Center since moving into their new home at Pinnacle Bank Arena for the start of the 2013-14 season.

The Devaney Center, which has been converted into the permanent home of the Nebraska volleyball team, has received extensive renovations with a new seating capacity of nearly 8,000. In NU’s final women’s basketball season at the Devaney Center in 2012-13, capacity was more than 13,000.

The event will be the first college basketball game back at the Devaney Center since the massive internal and external renovations. The Devaney Center did hold games in the 2014 boys and girls high school state tournaments.

The return to the Devaney Center for the contest with Utah was necessitated by a scheduling conflict with “Disney On Ice” at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Nebraska plans to make the day special by honoring the 1988 Big Eight champion Huskers, who went a perfect 13-0 at the Devaney Center on their way to the school’s first NCAA Tournament bid.

The 1988 team featured Big Eight Player of the Year Maurtice Ivy and All-Big Eight guard Amy Stephens, who has returned to Nebraska as an assistant coach for the 2014-15 season. Two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American Stephanie Bolli was also a major contributor for that Big Red team under Coach Angela Beck.

“We plan on making it a fun day for our fans to get back inside the Devaney Center and watch some great basketball,” Nebraska Executive Associate Athletic Director Marc Boehm said. “We are going to make the most of our one-game return this season by honoring our first NCAA Tournament team, and highlighting some of our great memories from our time at the Devaney Center.”

The battle between the Huskers and the Utes will be the second in a two-game series. Last season, Nebraska worked its way to a 75-69 victory over Utah at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City on Nov. 15, 2013. It was a breakout game for point guard Rachel Theriot, who erupted for 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists while playing the full 40 minutes for the first time in her career. Theriot went on to earn first-team All-Big Ten and conference tournament MVP honors before being named an honorable-mention Associated Press All-American as a sophomore in 2013-14.

Theriot is one of four starters back for the Big Red in 2014-15, joining senior second-team All-Big Ten selections Emily Cady and Tear’a Laudermill and senior Big Ten All-Defensive Team member Hailie Sample. Nebraska will also feature seven newcomers who have been ranked among the top 10 incoming classes in the nation by ESPN.

“We are expecting a great game from Utah,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “Rachel played a great second half to help us come back to win last year. We know Utah will be hungry for a win against us this year.”

Nebraska’s game with Utah will be part of an 18-game home schedule in 2014-15 that includes 17 games in the second season at Pinnacle Bank Arena. NU’s two exhibition games and 15 regular-season home games at Pinnacle Bank Arena will be part of a 17-game season ticket package that will be available to the public starting on Monday, July 28.

The game with Utah at the Devaney Center will be a separate, single-game ticket outside of that season ticket package. Tickets for the Utah game and advance parking for that game also will go on-sale to the public beginning on Monday, July 28.

Nebraska’s 2013-14 women’s basketball season ticket holders will have the first opportunity to renew their season tickets and purchase Utah tickets, beginning in mid-July.

Single-game tickets for the rest of Nebraska’s outstanding home schedule will not go on sale until late October or early November. The Big Red’s 2014-15 home schedule at Pinnacle Bank Arena will include showdowns with 2014 NCAA Women’s Final Four qualifier Maryland, Sweet 16 participant Penn State and NCAA second-round qualifiers Duke, Purdue and Iowa. All five of those teams finished the 2013-14 season ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation.

The Huskers also will face 2014 postseason qualifiers Minnesota and Michigan at the arena, along with Big Ten home games against Illinois, Ohio State and Wisconsin in Nebraska’s first-ever nine-game home conference schedule.

Nebraska’s non-conference home games include the season opener with Pepperdine on Saturday, Nov. 15, and contests with Alcorn State, Northern Colorado, Bakersfield and High Point, which went 22-11 and won the 2014 Big South regular-season title on its way to the Postseason WNIT.

Lincoln – Nebraska junior wing Terran Petteway was invited to participate in the Kevin Durant Skills Academy which takes place in Washington, D.C., this weekend.  The academy is for the top 30 high school and top 15 college wing players and is hosted by Oklahoma City Thunder forward and NBA MVP Kevin Durant.

“Getting invited to the camp is an honor, that you are considered to be among the top wing players in the country,” Petteway said. “I can’t wait to get there and play, as well as pick their minds and learn some insight to improve my game.”

Petteway, the first Husker player to attend the event which began in 2011, put together a strong sophomore season, as he averaged 18.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game to earn All-Big Ten honors.  The 6-foot-6 wing led the Big Ten in scoring average in 2013-14, becoming the first Husker to lead a conference in scoring in over 60 years. The Galveston, Texas, native reached double figures in 30 of 32 contests and had a pair of 30-point efforts on the year.

In Big Ten play, he also led the conference at 18.6 points per game, becoming the first Husker since Andre Smith in 1980-81 to accomplish the feat. He also was among the Big Ten leaders in rebounding (5.1, 19th), free throw percentage (.788, 12th), 3-pointers per game (1.6, 12th) and blocked shots (0.9, 12th) in conference games.

Petteway, who has spent the summer working on his ball handling and improving his shooting technique, will work with campers during the sessions and then go through sessions with the other college plays and pros running the camps

“I just have to keep doing what I’ve been doing all summer and go to the Kevin Durant camp and hopefully advance on to the Lebron James Skills Academy next month,” Petteway said.

Nebraska Athletics Reaches Unprecedented Milestone; First in the Big Ten Conference

UNLNebraska Athletics has reached an unprecedented milestone in athletic performance this season.  Nebraska became one of two NCAA institutions, and the first Big Ten program to qualify for a bowl game, plus NCAA postseason play in each of the following sports in the same calendar year— football, volleyball, and soccer in the fall; men’s basketball and women’s basketball in the winter; and baseball and softball in the spring.

Nebraska and Louisville were the only two schools to qualify for postseason play in those seven sports, and Nebraska was the only institution to win at least one game in six of those seven sports.  Even if soccer wasn’t included, only Texas and Arizona State would be the only two other institutions to join Nebraska and Louisville in this shared achievement.

Nebraska is the first and only school to accomplish this rare seven-sport feat among current Big Ten institutions, dating back to 1982, the year the NCAA launched postseason play in women’s basketball and softball.

2013-14 Postseason Recap for the Huskers

To recap postseason play for the Huskers:

  • The football team defeated Georgia in the Gator Bowl;
  • Volleyball advanced to the Elite Eight;
  • Soccer won the Big Ten regular-season title as well as the postseason tournament and defeated Southeastern Louisiana in hosting an NCAA Regional
  • Women’s basketball won the Big Ten Conference postseason tournament and for the second-straight year earned a win in the NCAA Tournament
  • Men’s basketball team made its first appearance in the Big Dance in 16 years
  • Softball tied for the Big Ten regular-season championship, won an NCAA Regional and advanced to a Super Regional for the second straight year, taking eventual national runner-up Alabama to the wire.
  • Baseball won one game in its Stillwater regional against Binghamton.

Overall, it was a productive season in more than just the seven sports listed above.  Seven other Husker sports competed in NCAA postseason action over this past year:

  • The women’s bowling team was the NCAA Championship runner up
  • The rifle team finished fifth at the NCAA Championships
  • Women’s gymnastics shared the Big Ten regular-season championship and made it to the Super Six
  • Men’s gymnastics placed eighth at the national meet
  • Wrestling finished 11th at NCAA Championships
  • Men’s track and field placed 17th indoors and 12th outdoors
  • Women’s track and field placed 19th last weekend at the NCAA Outdoor Championships

First for Husker Men’s Basketball and Baseball

This calendar year also brought about another Husker first. The 2013-14 season qualified as the first time in Nebraska Athletics history that our men’s basketball and baseball teams qualified for NCAA Tournaments in the same year. It was also just the third time that both the men’s and women’s programs qualified for the NCAA basketball tournament the same year and the first since 1998 (1993 was the first time).

Bill Scherr
Bill Scherr

Former Husker wrestler Bill Scherr earned USA Wrestling’s Myron Roderick Man-of-the-Year Award on Thursday, an accolade that recognizes an outstanding man for his contributions to the sport of wrestling.

In the position, Scherr developed the working structure of CPOW, ran weekly conference calls to help with CPOW’s strategy, oversaw the international relations area of CPOW and served as a spokesman for the organization.

Scherr has served on USA Wrestling’s Board of Directors and coached numerous teams, including the Women’s World Team. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1998 as a distinguished member after achieving success on the international level.

Scherr made one Olympic appearance, capturing the bronze medal at 220 pounds in 1988. At the FILA World Championships, Scherr earned four medals from 1985 to 1989. He took first place at 198 pounds in 1985, while earning runner-up finishes in 1986 and 1989, and a third-place result at the 1987 World Championships.

Husker Wrestling Adds Arthur for Upcoming Season

UNLThe Nebraska wrestling team announced the addition of 149-pounder Justin Arthur for the 2014-15 season on Wednesday.

“We’re very excited about Justin Arthur joining us,” Head Coach Mark Manning said. “Justin possesses the qualities we look for and demand from our student-athletes, and he was highly sought after the last couple weeks by some of the top teams in college wrestling. Justin competed as a true freshman and had a tremendous year. He expressed to us the need to become a national champion as well as being part of a program that can challenge for championships. We feel he is another piece to the puzzle that allows our program to move forward toward our goals.”

Arthur spent his first year of college wrestling at Clarion, where he compiled a 29-16 record at 149 pounds and narrowly missed the All-America podium at the 2014 NCAA Championships. After dropping his opening match at the national tournament, Arthur reeled off three consecutive wins in the consolation bracket before falling to fourth-seeded Kendric Maple of Oklahoma by a 7-4 decision. Arthur, a Huntington, W.V., native, earned a pin and major decision during his winning streak at the NCAA Championships.

Before Clarion, Arthur completed his high school career at Huntington under Coach Robbie Archer as a three-time West Virginia state champion with a career record of 142-15. As a senior, he was named West Virginia’s Most Valuable Wrestler when he went 30-2 and collected a state title at 145 pounds. Arthur added state crowns as a junior in 2012 at 138 pounds when he went 40-2, and in 2010, when he earned a 39-3 record at 119 pounds. In 2011, he finished third at 130 pounds with a season record of 33-8.

In addition, Arthur was the NHSCA Senior Nationals runner-up and a two-time Fargo All-American.

Four Huskers Sign MLB Contracts

husker baseballLincoln – Since being drafted in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, three members of the 2014 Nebraska baseball team have signed professional contracts. Senior Zach Hirsch signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, while juniors Pat Kelly (Minnesota Twins) and Aaron Bummer (Chicago White Sox) each decided to forego their senior seasons and sign with their respective teams. Michael Pritchard was the fourth player from the 2014 squad to sign a contract, as he was picked up by the St. Louis Cardinals after not being drafted and signed with the Cardinals on Wednesday morning.

2014 marks the second time in Darin Erstad’s three-year tenure as head coach that the Huskers have lost a pair of juniors to the draft. Following the 2012 season, both Travis Huber and Richard Stock passed on their senior seasons.

“We are very excited for Zach, Michael, Pat and Aaron, to purse their dreams of being a Major League Baseball player,” Erstad said. “I can’t thank each of them enough for helping put Nebraska baseball back on the map and for helping cement our culture at Nebraska for years to come.”

Kelly was the first member of the 2014 team to get picked in the draft, going in the 12th round to the Twins. He was a three-time All-Big Ten performer and two-time first-team selection during his three seasons at Nebraska.

Kelly led the Huskers in hits each of the past two seasons and ended his career ranked 20th in school history with 212 career hits. Defensively, Kelly posted a .990 fielding percentage in 2014, as he committed just three errors, and he leaves Nebraska ranked seventh in school history with 468 assists.

Selected in the 19th round by the White Sox, Bummer worked as a reliever during his freshman season in 2012 and started in the bullpen as a sophomore before joining NU’s weekend rotation during Big Ten play in 2013. The 6-2 lefty worked exclusively as a starter in 2014, throwing 89.0 innings over 15 starts. He led the Huskers in 2014 in strikeouts with 56, including a team-best 16 strikeouts looking.

During his three years in Lincoln, Bummer posted an 11-6 record with a 3.06 ERA. He also tossed his first career complete game during the 2014 season, as he capped a series sweep of Ohio State at Hawks Field. The 2014 Draft marked the second time Bummer has been selected, as he was a 31st-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2011 out of high school, but instead chose to come to Nebraska.

After working as a starter during his sophomore season in 2012, Hirsch made the move to the bullpen in 2013 and was one of the top relief arms in the country in 2014. A third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2014, Hirsch was also one of 50 relievers nationally to be named to the Midseason Stopper-of-the-Year List. For his work in 2014, Hirsch was picked in the 19th round by Milwaukee.

Hirsch led the Huskers with a 1.72 ERA in 2014 and held opposing batters to a .193 average. The 6-4 lefty’s ERA is the second-lowest single-season ERA in school history, topped only by Bill McGuire’s 1.29 ERA in 1984. Hirsch’s 31 appearances in 2014 were the most by a Husker since Brett Jensen made 33 appearances in 2005.

A three-time All-Big Ten performer and 2012 All-American, Pritchard ended his four-year Husker career ranked fifth in school history with 251 career hits. A career .339 hitter, Pritchard’s 45 career doubles are tied for 10th in NU history.

A native of Omaha, Pritchard was selected to the 2014 NCAA Stillwater Regional All-Tournament team and was a first-team All-Big Ten pick for the second time in his career in 2014 after being a first-team selection in 2012. Pritchard earned second-team honors in 2013.

One of the most prolific hitters in Husker history, Pritchard strung together a 25-game hitting streak in 2012 to tie for the third-longest streak in school history. He added a 20-game hitting streak in 2013 to become the first player in school history with a pair of 20+ game hitting streaks. He also put together a 57-game on base streak that spanned the final 42 games of the 2013 season to the first 15 games of the 2014 season.
