Memorial Stadium Fan Experience Improvement Projects Coming this Fall

Memorial Stadium Scoreboard Design 2014
Memorial Stadium Scoreboard Design 2014

“Be Ready.”  Two words capture the excitement behind the upcoming University of Nebraska football season. The Nebraska Athletic Department wants Husker Nation to “Be Ready” to enjoy the enhanced fan experience in Memorial Stadium for the 125th season of Husker football which kicks off on August 30, 2014.

The $12.3 million Memorial Stadium Fan Experience Improvements project is underway and includes replacing the stadium’s existing sound system; installing a wireless network system to improve connectivity; creating a game-day smart phone application for all fans in Memorial Stadium; and the installation of an IPTV system.

“Each of these Memorial Stadium Fan Experience Improvements are designed to provide the best college football fans in America with the best game-day experience possible,” Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst said. “It is extremely important that we strive to improve our fan experience and our customer service in all of our athletic venues. These initiatives in Memorial Stadium are a big step in ensuring that there is no better place to be on college football game day than at Nebraska.”

New Sound System to Improve Quality Throughout Memorial Stadium

The previous sound system at Memorial Stadium was more than 20 years old, and while it was still functional, the normal life expectancy of such systems is 15 years. With installation underway, a new, single-point source system will replace the current speaker cluster inside the stadium.  It will use line array and beam focusing speaker technology that will provide consistent audio levels throughout the stadium.  Voice and music intelligibility will also be much improved and will allow fans, in all parts of the stadium, to enjoy the full Nebraska game-day experience.  In addition, all concourses, suites, and common areas will be driven by DSP (digital signal processing) technology.  The DSP system will also deliver sound to the PA speaker amplifiers.  Downs Electric has been awarded the contract for the installation of the new sound system with the assistance of BNT Productions and work began on April 14.  Additionally, as part of the improvement, a new scoreboard design will be incorporated into the overall sound system structure. The scoreboard will display a 25-foot illuminated Nebraska “N” and topped with a graphic of a football, visible from both inside and outside of Memorial Stadium.

New State-of-the-Art Wireless Network System will be Largest Collegiate Stadium Installation

The new wireless network system has many advantages and will allow fans better access to internet applications from their smartphones, regardless of carrier or location in the stadium, which will also relieve volume to cellular networks for voice calls and text messaging. The system installed in Memorial Stadium will be the largest collegiate and second-largest Cisco Connected Stadium deployment in North America.  Other stadiums with Cisco Connected Systems include Pinnacle Bank Arena, AT&T Stadium (home to the Dallas Cowboys and the largest Cisco Connected deployment in North America), Beaver Stadium (Penn State University), Stanford Stadium, Amon G. Carter Stadium (TCU), Yankee Stadium and Bank of America Stadium (Carolina Panthers).

Wireless coverage will also extend beyond the stadium to allow for an even greater area of connectivity, including the Hawks practice facility and practice fields, the Ed Weir Track, Champions Club (Surface Lot Only), parking garages 1 and 9, and parking surface lots 3, 4, 5, 8, and 12.  CDW has been awarded the contract for the installation of the new wireless system and work began on April 28.

Smartphone Application to Deliver Exclusive Game-Day Information and Video

Nebraska Athletics is extending its contract with NeuLion, a leading internet video technology provider for live and on-demand interactive content for any Internet-enabled device, to develop an innovative in-venue game-day experience.  Through a smartphone application, fans will be able to access in-depth information about the games, including exclusive streaming video content only available to those inside Memorial Stadium.  Also available will be rosters and player bios, real-time stats and venue maps with concession stands, restrooms, and emergency stations.  This experience will be added to the Official Nebraska Huskers App that is currently available to iOS and Android users.  NeuLion has broad experience delivering high quality sports video experiences on multiple devices, including work with the Big Ten Network on the BTN2Go app, the National Hockey League, Ultimate Fighting Championship, the National Basketball Association and more than 175 colleges.

When asked about the impact the improvements within Memorial Stadium will have on those in attendance, Husker Athletics Director of Digital Media Kelly Mosier said: “As technology continues to improve, fans are engaging with college sports across all platforms of social media during games.  Specifically addressing Nebraska football, we are excited that the added connectivity we are providing for the 2014 football season will give fans in Memorial Stadium greater access to engage in the conversations which are occurring online.”  The game-day application will be ready for use when the 2014 season begins.

The exclusive video content will extend the HuskerVision experience beyond the existing big screens inside of Memorial Stadium and give fans control of their video experience on their own mobile devices. To meet this new avenue of engaging fan content, HuskerVision will expand its control room in a project that was awarded to Alpha Audio & Video.

IPTV System Brings Game Day Content into Memorial Stadium Concourses, Clubs and Suites

The Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is a system through which television services are delivered using the Internet protocol suite over a packet-switched network such as a LAN or the Internet, instead of being delivered through traditional terrestrial, satellite signal, and cable television formats.  IPTV deployments tightly manage network security and performance to ensure a superior entertainment experience, including the delivery of significantly more content and functionality. An IP-based platform also allows significant opportunities to make the TV viewing experience more interactive and personalized.  With the advancement of the IPTV system, every channel we provide to fans will be in HD. We are also able to ensure the ability to provide unique camera angles and live, in-game stats. IPTV is a component of the Cisco Connected Stadium solution and that is being installed by CDW.

West Stadium to Incorporate Brick Design Element

Memorial Stadium improvements also include the addition of brick on the base section of West Memorial Stadium. The brick has been donated by Endicott Clay Products Co. of Endicott, Nebraska, to match the brick they have provided for other parts of the stadium. With the addition of brick on the West Stadium side, the West, North, and East Stadiums will all feature brick as a cohesive design element.

Seat Yourself Program Concludes June 10

Nebraska Athletics was also pleased to introduce a new, online ticketing program earlier this spring for the upcoming football season called, Seat Yourself.  The Seat Yourself process was designed to help current and prospective Nebraska football season ticket holders who wished to explore the option of moving their season ticket(s) or acquire new seats.  The new system improved the ticketing process and included the ability to have a 3D view of Memorial Stadium, view available seats, and make changes to current seats or select additional seats. Donors, season ticket holders and those who placed their names on the initial Request List have been assisted with tickets and upgrades as part of Phase I, which ended on May 21.  It was an extremely successful launch and will expand to other Husker venues in the future.  Phase II will assist all those on the second Request List which began on April 1.

All fans interested in purchasing football season tickets for the 2014 football season can go to Huskers.com/memorialstadium to get on the Request List.  Season tickets are $56 per game, or $392 for the seven-game season package, a savings of $113 over single-game prices.  Beginning June 16, fans will be able to view remaining available seats and immediately purchase season tickets online at Huskers.com/memorialstadium with the Select Your Seat process.  Don’t miss the opportunity to be inside Memorial Stadium for the 125th season of Husker Football.

Lincoln – Nebraska freshman outfielder Ryan Boldt picked up another accolade on Wednesday, as he was named a 2014 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. The Red Wing, Minn., native is the 12th Husker freshman since 2000 to earn freshman All-America honors and the first do so since 2012 when Pat Kelly and Kyle Kubat were both tabbed as freshman All-Americans.

An unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten Freshman team and a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree in 2014, Boldt started in center field in 55 of NU’s 62 games. The freshman hit leadoff for the Huskers 29 times on the year, including the final 28 games of the season. NU posted a 22-7 record on the year with Boldt in the leadoff spot.

Boldt finished the year third on the team with 74 hits, two shy of Kelly’s team-high 76 hits. Boldt led NU in runs scored (47), triples (6) and stolen bases (7). He ranked second on the team with 12 doubles and notched 31 RBIs, including a team-high 20 RBIs with two outs.

Tabbed as the No. 2 freshman in the country prior to the 2014 season by Baseball American, Boldt excelled in the postseason with a .462 average. With the Huskers playing in their first NCAA Regional since 2008, Boldt led the team in hits (6) and runs (5). Half of his hits in NU’s three games in Stillwater were for extra bases, as he roped a pair of triples and notched a double.

Boldt was one of six freshman in the Big Ten Conference to earn freshman All-America honors on Wednesday. He was joined by Tanner Tully (Ohio State), Brett Adcock (Michigan), Adam Walton (Illinois), Ronnie Dawson (Ohio State) and Carmen Benedetti (Michigan).

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska associate athletic director Paul Meyers has announced his resignation to pursue other opportunities.

Meyers had been head of athletic department development since 2005 and is credited with raising $250 million. He played an integral role in securing donations for a series of facilities upgrades in recent years.

Meyers said Wednesday night he’s proud of what he accomplished and that he’ll continue to support the Cornhuskers as a fan. He declined further comment.

Athletic director Shawn Eichorst said Meyers was a valuable member of the athletic department for many years and wished him the best.

Meyers was an All-America outfielder for the Huskers’ baseball team in 1986. He joined the athletic department as a development officer in 1994.

Lady Huskers to Host Duke in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – Big Ten power Nebraska and ACC power Duke will go head-to-head in one of the marquee matchups of the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Two of the nation’s premier conferences announced the eighth annual matchups for the series on Wednesday, June 4.

Coach Connie Yori’s Huskers will represent the Big Ten as the 2014 conference tournament champions. The Big Red finished with the second-most wins (26) and second-fewest losses (7) in school history in 2013-14. NU’s .788 winning percentage ranked No. 2 in program history, as the Huskers advanced to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament.

The 2013-14 Huskers finished No. 13 in the Associated Press Poll, No. 17 in the USA Today/Coaches Top 25 and No. 19 in the NCAA RPI. NU finished 12-4 in Big Ten regular-season play, before rolling to three straight wins as the No. 3 seed at the conference tournament in Indianapolis.

Nebraska, which has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all three of its seasons in the Big Ten, advanced to the NCAA second round with a 74-55 win over Fresno State at UCLA. It marked the first time in school history that the Big Red won at least one NCAA Tournament game in back-to-back seasons.

Yori, who has won back-to-back Big Ten Coach-of-the-Year honors, enters her 13th season at Nebraska as the school’s all-time winningest coach with 241 victories. Her Huskers return four All-Big Ten starters led by honorable-mention AP All-American and first-team All-Big Ten point guard Rachel Theriot. Senior forwards Emily Cady (Second Team All-Big Ten) and Hailie Sample (Big Ten All-Defensive) have joined each other in the starting five for 100 consecutive games, while fellow senior Tear’a Laudermill earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in her first year as a starter in 2013-14.

The 2014-15 Huskers will be bolstered by a seven-player class of incoming freshmen that was ranked No. 9 nationally by ESPN, as the Big Red shoot for an unprecedented fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2015.

The 2013 Huskers, which featured current returning starters Cady, Sample, Theriot and Laudermill, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, falling to Duke, 53-45, in the third round at Norfolk, Va.

Duke finished 28-7 overall in 2013-14, closing the regular season at No. 9 in the AP Poll, before finishing 13th in the USA Today/Coaches Top 25. The Blue Devils entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 4 RPI team in the nation.

Duke, finished second in the ACC, losing three of its seven games on the season to NCAA runner-up Notre Dame, the last time in the ACC Championship Game on March 9. In fact, four of Duke’s last eight losses have come to Notre Dame, which also knocked the Blue Devils out of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in the NCAA Elite Eight.

Duke cruised to a first-round NCAA win over Winthrop in 2014, before being upset by DePaul in the second round. DePaul advanced to the NCAA Lincoln Regional at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Duke had advanced to three consecutive NCAA Elite Eight appearances and won three consecutive ACC regular-season titles along with a pair of conference tournament titles prior to last season.

Coach Joanne P. McCallie enters her eighth season at Duke, where she owns a 202-42 record. The Blue Devils lose three senior starters from last year’s group, including first-round WNBA Draft picks Chelsea Gray and Tricia Liston, along with Haley Peters. Gray went with 11th overall pick to the Connecticut Sun despite missing the final 18 games of the 2014 season with an injury. Liston was selected with the next pick by the Minnesota Lynx, before Husker senior All-American Jordan Hooper was chosen with the 13th pick by the Tulsa Shock.

That Duke senior trio of Gray, Liston and Peters combined for nearly 42 points per game a year ago, while departing seniors Chloe Wells and Richa Jackson also played key roles.

All-America center Elizabeth Williams returns as a 2015 senior and national player-of-the-year candidate, along with junior guard Alexis Jones. Seniors Ka’lia Johnson and Jenna Frush will be expected to add leadership for a young Blue Devil squad that includes sophomores Oderah Chidom, Amber Henson and Kendall McCravey-Cooper.

The Blue Devil program has made 21 trips to the NCAA Tournament and ranks sixth in history with 53 all-time NCAA Tournament wins.

The 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge will feature 14 games, including eight games on Wednesday, Dec. 3 and six games onThursday, Dec. 4.

husker baseballSTILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Taylor Bryant came home with the go-ahead run when Nebraska’s Bob Greco balked in the seventh inning and Cal State Fullerton eliminated the Cornhuskers 4-3 in the NCAA regionals Sunday.

Cal State Fullerton (34-23) advanced to Sunday night’s regional final against top-seeded Oklahoma State, for a rematch of the previous night’s 13-7 loss.

Down 3-2 in the seventh, Fullerton scored twice without registering a hit. Jared Deacon was hit by a pitch and moved to second when Bryant reached on an error by Nebraska starting pitcher Aaron Bummer. One out later, Cornhusker shortstop Steven Reveles could not come up with Keegan Dale’s sharp grounder, allowing Deacon to score and advancing Bryant to third.

Blake Headley’s RBI single in the sixth gave Nebraska (41-21) a 3-2 lead.

Nebraska Rallies in 9th to Beat Binghamton 8-6

husker baseballSTILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Steven Reveles laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt, bringing home Jake Placzek from third with the winning run, as Nebraska rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to escape with a 8-6 victory over Binghamton on Saturday in an elimination game in NCAA regional play.

Nebraska (41-20) squandered leads of 4-0 and 5-3 and entered the ninth down 6-5. With one out, Ben Miller walked and, after Placzek singled, came home on Ryan Boldt’s high-chopper ground ball that bounced over Binghamton second baseman Daniel Nevares into right field, to tie it.

Reveles, who already had two hits and an RBI, followed with the bunt to make it 7-6. Michael Pritchard then delivered another run-scoring single to score Boldt.

The Cornhuskers, who lost 5-1 to Cal State Fullerton on Friday, survived to play again Sunday, while Binghamton (25-27), which won four consecutive elimination games last week just to qualify for the NCAA tournament, was eliminated.

Down 5-3, Binghamton answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs to take its first lead of the contest, going ahead on Bill Bereszniewicz’s two-out single to left.

Huskers Fall to Titans in NCAA Opener

husker baseballStillwater, Okla. – Playing in a NCAA Regional for the first time since 2008, the Nebraska baseball team (40-20) dropped a 5-1 decision to the Cal State Fullerton Titans (33-22)on Friday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The game was a pitcher’s duel for most of the day, with four of the game’s six runs coming in the eighth inning. With the game tied 1-1 and the bases empty with two outs in the top of the eighth, the Titans loaded the bases and their No. 3 hitter J.D. Davis smashed a grand slam well over the left-field fence to put the Titans on top 5-1.

Both starters went 6.1 innings and put together strong outings, but neither factored into the decision. NU’s Chance Sinclair allowed just one unearned run on two hits, a walk and four strikeouts, while CSF’s Thomas Eshelman gave up one run on seven hits and a walk, while striking out five.

After being tabbed as a third-team All-American on Thursday morning, Sinclair showed why he deserved the national honor. The junior took a no hitter into the seventh, when Davis broke it up with a line-drive single to left field. Sinclair retired the first 14 batters he faced before he issued a two-out walk in the fifth. On the day, Sinclair retired the Titans in order five times.

Nebraska entered the day 31-1 on the year when outhitting their opponent, with the only loss coming in the second game of the season against Oregon State. NU’s record dropped to 31-2 after outhitting the Titans, 9-5. Eight of Nebraska’s starters notched a hit on the afternoon, including a pair of hits by freshman Ryan Bolt.

Nebraska was in position to scores the game’s first run in the bottom of the third when Austin Christensen led off with a single and Steven Reveles laid down a sacrifice bunt that put Christensen in scoring position for the top of NU’s lineup with one out. Eshelman didn’t let Christensen advance any farther though, as the sophomore righty got Boldt and Austin Darby each to pop out to end the third.

Sinclair was perfect through 4.2 innings, as he retired the first 14 Titan batters he faced. The Titans got their first base runner of the game when Tanner Pinkston worked a four-pitch walk. Sinclair went right back to work and got Austin Diemer to pop out for the final out of the CSF fifth.

Boldt nearly untied the scoreless game with one swing to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but the fly ball hit the wall in right-center field and the freshman had to settle for a leadoff triple, his fifth of the season. Two pitches later Darby delivered a RBI groundout to second base that put the Huskers ahead 1-0. With one down, Michael Pritchard and Pat Kelly notched consecutive line-drive singles, but Eshelman kept the damage to one run with a strikeout and a fly out.

The Titans evened the game, 1-1, in the top of the seventh on an unearned run. Keegan Dale led off the frame with a ground ball to Christensen at first, but Christensen bobbled the ball and Dale reached on the error that would prove costly. Davis then broke up Sinclair’s no hitter with a single to left that put Dale in scoring position. Sinclair got a pop out for the first out of the inning, but David Olemdo-Barrera came through with a RBI single up the middle that tied the game 1-1. With the go-ahead run at second base with one out, Nebraska went to senior Zach Hirsch. The lefty calmed the waters and kept the game tied 1-1, as he got pinch-hitter Greg Velazquez to bounce into a 5-3 inning-ending double play.

Nebraska was in business in the bottom of the seventh after Reveles executed a hit-and-run and put runners on the corners with one down. Boldt then worked a four-pitch walk that loaded the bases for NU’s 2-3-4 hitters. CSF reliever Koby Gauna was able to escape the jam by getting Darby to pop up and Pritchard to fly out.

The Titans then loaded the bases in the top of the eight with two outs and Nebraska’s pitching staff was unable to what CSF’s bullpen. After Hirsch gave up a full-count walk to Dale that loaded the bases, NU brought in Josh Roeder to face Davis, a right-handed batter. The CSF right fielder blew the game open for the Titans when he blasted a 1-1 offering from Roeder for a grand slam to left field.

The Huskers got one hit over their final two at-bats, and were unable to put together a late rally like they have done so many times this year.

The Huskers fall to the loser’s bracket and will play tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. (CT) against the loser of tonight’s game between Oklahoma State and Binghamton. TV coverage fortomorrow is yet to be announced.

Sinclair Named Third-Team Louisville Slugger All-American

Chance Sinclair Nebraska Huskers
Chance Sinclair

Lincoln – After earning unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honors last week, Nebraska junior pitcher Chance Sinclair was tabbed for a national honor on Thursday morning as he was named a third-team Louisville Slugger All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

Sinclair is the first Husker to earn All-American honors since Michael Pritchard was a third-team pick by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 2012. Johnny Dorn was the last NU pitcher to earn All-American honors, selected as a third-team honoree by the NCBWA in 2008.

Following two seasons at Neosho County CC where he set multiple school records, Sinclair transfer to Nebraska and has been part of NU’s weekend rotation all season in 2014. The Spring Hill, Kan., native leads the Huskers with a 9-1 record, while also posting a 2.29 ERA. During Big Ten play, Sinclair was a perfect 6-0 in eight starts with a 2.10 ERA, including a 10-strikeout performance in his final home start of the year against Illinois on May 15. It was the most strikeouts in a conference game by a Husker since Thad Weber sat down 11 against Kansas on March 18, 2008.

On the year, Sinclair has gone 6.0 or more innings in 12 of his 15 starts, including nine outings of at least 7.0 innings or more and a 9.0-inning complete game against Ohio State on April 5. Sinclair’s complete game against Ohio State was one of three by the Husker pitching staff that weekend, as Christian DeLeon and Aaron Bummer also tossed complete games. No other staff in the country threw three 9.0-inning complete games in a weekend series during the 2014 season.

Sinclair was one of five Big Ten players honored on Thursday, with conference regular-season and tournament champion Indiana claiming the other four spots. Catcher Kyle Schwarber and first baseman Sam Travis were both second-team picks, while pitcher Joey DeNato and third baseman Dustin DeMuth were named to the third team along with Sinclair.

Nebraska opens NCAA Tournament play on Friday at 12:05 p.m. and Sinclair is scheduled to start NU’s first tournament game since 2008. The No. 2 seed Huskers will play No. 3 seed Cal State Fullerton in the Stillwater Regional and the game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
