Huskers Collect Big Ten Honors

husker baseballLincoln – Eight members of the Nebraska baseball team were honored by the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday morning, including Pat Kelly, Michael Pritchard and Chance Sinclair who were each tabbed as first-team All-Big Ten performers by the league’s coaches. Blake Headley and Christian DeLeon were each second-team selections, while Zach Hirsch earned third-team honors. Ryan Boldt was one of 13 newcomers named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team and Ty Kildow was Nebraska’s Sportsmanship Award Winner.

Now a three-time All-Big Ten pick, Kelly earned first-team honors for the second straight season after also collecting second-team accolades as a freshman in 2012. Batting as NU’s cleanup hitter in 53 of his 55 starts this season, Kelly led the Huskers during the regular season in hits (68), multi-hit games (20), RBIs (51), multi-RBI games (15) and home runs (4), while ranking third on the team with a .319 average. His 68 hits were tied for fourth in the Big Ten overall and he was one of just two players in the league to top 50 RBIs on the season, with Kelly’s 51 RBIs ranking second to Big Ten Player-of-the-Year Sam Travis’s 53 RBIs. Kelly not only swung a hot stick all season for the Huskers, but he also flashed one of the best gloves in the county. He committed just three errors all season in 281 chances and played error-free baseball during Big Ten play.

Pritchard also earned his second first-team All-Big Ten honor on Tuesday and his third overall award. The senior from Omaha was a first-team pick in 2012 and collected second-team honors last season. One of the most prolific hitters in Nebraska history, Pritchard enters the Big Ten Tournament 10th in Nebraska history with 243 career hits. He hit .318 during the regular season and led all Big Ten outfielders with 42 RBIs. Pritchard’s 19 doubles were tied for second overall in the league and with one more double this season he’ll become the eighth player at Nebraska since 2000 to notch 20 or more doubles in a season.

A welcome addition to the Husker pitching staff in 2014, Sinclair become the first Husker since Johnny Dorn in 2008 to earn first-team all-conference honors. A unanimous first-team choice, Sinclair posted a 1.88 ERA and a 9-1 record on the year, including a 6-0 mark during conference play. His nine wins and 1.88 ERA both ranked second in the league to Big Ten Pitcher-of-the-Year Joey DeNato’s 11 wins and 1.83 ERA. Sinclair notched a career-best 10 strikeouts against Illinois last Thursday, it was the most by a Husker since Tyler Niederklein struck out 10 against Northern Colorado on March 22, 2011, and the most in a conference game by a Husker since Thad Weber sat down 11 against Kansas on March 18, 2008. A transfer from Neosho County CC, Sinclair has gone 6.0 or more innings in 12 of his 14 starts this season, including nine outings of at least 7.0 innings or more and a 9.0-inning complete game against Ohio State.

After collecting third-team honors at third base last season, Headley earned second-team honors at first base on Tuesday. A .331 hitter for the Huskers on the year, the Omaha native was even better during Big Ten play with a .341 average. Headley ranked second on the team with 19 multi-hit games and tied Pritchard for the team lead with six three-hit performances. Headley routinely delivered for the Huskers in crunch time, as he hit .380 with runners in scoring position and 16 of his 24 RBIs on the year came with two outs.

DeLeon was on his way to making a case for Big Ten Pitcher-of-the-Year honors, before an injury forced him to miss NU’s final three Big Ten series. DeLeon’s 1.34 ERA during league play was tops in the conference. Earlier this season, he tossed back-to-back complete games becoming the first Husker pitcher since Erik Bird in 2009 to throw consecutive complete games. DeLeon went on to throw 9.0 innings against Northwestern, but the game went to extra innings and he missed out on his third-straight complete game. Since joining the Huskers last season, DeLeon has made 25 starts, including 11 in 2014. He has gone at least 6.0 innings 21 times, at least 7.0 innings 14 times and 8.0 or more innings 10 times.

Hirsch picked up his first career all-conference award following one of the top regular seasons by a Husker reliever in recent memory. The lefty has been nearly unhittable in his role at NU’s setup man, as he leads the team with a 1.24 ERA and opponents are hitting a paltry .183 off the St. Charles, Ill., native. Tabbed as one of the top 50 relievers in the nation on the NCBWA Mid-Season Stopper of the Year Award Watch List, Hirsch is tied for second on the team with 45 strikeouts, as he is averaging 1.03 strikeout per inning, while walking only 11 batters on the year. Over Hirsch’s last seven appearances entering the Big Ten Tournament, he has thrown 11.1 innings of scoreless relief on five hits and nine strikeouts. Hirsch has 18 appearances this season where he has thrown at least 1.0 inning of relief and hasn’t given up a run. In 10 of those appearances he hasn’t given up a hit.

A two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree in 2014, Boldt started in center field in 48 of NU’s 55 games and hit leadoff for the Huskers 22 times on the year, including the final 21 games of the regular season. NU posted a 18-4 record on the year with Boldt in the leadoff spot and he was one of four players on NU’s roster to top 60 hits during the regular season with 62 hits, including nine doubles, four triples and two homers. He has also driven in 27 runs on the year, with 18 RBIs coming with two outs, and ranks third on the team with 39 runs scored.

Kildow was selected as Nebraska’s Sportsmanship Award Winner because of his team-first mentality. The senior started his Husker career on the football field, but has spent the last three seasons on the baseball diamond. Kildow has played in 72 games during his career, including 16 starts this season, and has stolen 13 bases. He was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar last season and has twice earned academic All-Big Ten honors. Earlier this month, Kildow graduated with his degree in biological sciences.

The Huskers open postseason play tomorrow at TD Ameritrade Park, when they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at 1:05 p.m. There will be no TV coverage of the game, but Greg Sharpe and Ben McLaughlin will have the call on the Husker Sports Network.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln police ticketed Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles for negligent driving after he was involved in a three-vehicle accident.

Miles was driving in southwest Lincoln about 4 p.m. Friday when his Cadillac Escalade struck a Honda Pilot that had slowed in front of him. The impact pushed the Honda into the back of a stopped pickup.

According to the accident report, Miles told police he had taken his eyes off the road, and when he looked up he was unable to avoid hitting the Honda. The Honda’s driver said she went to a hospital to be examined for neck and back pain. There were no other injuries.

Estimated damage was $2,000 to Miles’ vehicle, $4,000 to the Honda and $500 to the pickup. Alcohol was not a factor.

Theft Charge against Nebraska’s Banderas Dismissed

Josh Banderas

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A felony theft charge against Nebraska linebacker Josh Banderas has been dismissed.

Lancaster County Attorney Joe Kelly said Monday night that Banderas will enter a pre-trial diversion program rather than face charges in the theft of seven bicycles last week. Banderas is eligible for diversion because he has no prior felony convictions.

Lincoln police on May 12 arrested Banderas and Nebraska track athlete Lucas Keifer in a pickup loaded with mountain bikes. A witness spotted them using bolt cutters to remove bikes from racks near university housing.

Banderas told police he and Keifer planned to sell the bikes. Each was charged with felony theft. The charge against Banderas can be re-instated if he fails to complete his diversion program. Keifer’s case remains open.

Football coach Bo Pelini has not commented.

No. 20 Nebraska Opens Big Ten Tournament with Ohio State

husker baseballAfter wrapping up the regular season with a 2-1 series win over the Illinois Fighting Illini, the No. 20 Nebraska baseball team (37-18, 18-6 Big Ten) enters the postseason as the No. 2 seed at the Big Ten Tournament.

The Huskers open tournament play on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. when they meet the No. 7 seed Ohio State Buckeyes (30-26, 10-14 Big Ten) at TD Ameritrade Park in downtown Omaha.

The Huskers and Buckeyes met earlier this season for a three-game series in Lincoln, with NU sweeping the series. All three games were close, as Nebraska posted three-straight comeback victories, including a pair of walk-off wins, while NU’s starting rotation of Christian DeLeon, Chance Sinclair and Aaron Bummer each threw complete games.

Wednesday will be the fourth time in three years that the Huskers and Buckeyes have meet at the Big Ten Tournament.

At the 2012 tournament in Columbus, Ohio, the Buckeyes ended NU’s season with a 6-2 win in an elimination game. Last season in Minneapolis, the Buckeyes knocked the Huskers out of the winner’s bracket with a 3-2 win, before the Huskers eliminated the Buckeyes two days later, 5-0.

Nebraska Starter – Chance Sinclair

Chance Sinclair is scheduled to make his 15th start of the season on Wednesday, and will be in search of his 10 win of the year. The junior is 9-1 and ranks second in the Big Ten with a 1.88 ERA

Sinclair is coming  off his 12th start of at least 6.0 innings, following a 7.0-inning outing against Illinois.

Sinclair is one of three pitchers in the Big Ten with an ERA under 2.00, as Joey DeNato leads the league with a 1.83 ERA and DeNato’s teammate Christian Morris ranks third with a 1.99 ERA.

In Sinclair’s start against the Buckeyes on April 5, the junior gave up three runs (all unearned) on seven hits and no walks in his first career complete game.

Nebraska-Ohio State History

The Huskers lead the all-time series against the Buckeyes, 8-6, with NU also holding a 7-5 advantage since the Huskers joined the Big Ten Conference for the 2012 season.

The all-time series started in 1991 when the Buckeyes earned a 5-2 victory in Phoenix, Ariz. The Huskers evened the series in 2001 with a 10-5 victory at the Mardi Gras Ball in Lafayette, La.

Ohio State won the first ever conference meeting, 10-2, in April 13, 2012, but the Huskers won the series in Columbus two days later with a doubleheader sweep.

The Buckeyes eliminated the Huskers from the 2012 Big Ten Tournament with a 6-2 victory.

Last season the Huskers took the first game of a three-game set in Lincoln, but then the Buckeyes came back and won the next two games, including a 6-5 winning in 11 inningson Saturday.

OSU knocked the Huskers into the losers bracket at the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, but the Huskers got revenge two days later with a 5-0 victory that eliminated Ohio State from postseason play.

Saints Sign 2nd-Round Pick Jean-Baptiste

Stanley Jean-BaptisteNEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints signed second-round draft pick Stanley Jean-Baptiste to a four-year contract Saturday.

The 6-foot-3, 218-pound former Nebraska cornerback was selected 58th overall last week.

Jean-Baptiste was a second-team All-Big Ten selection as a senior last season, when he tied for a team-high four interceptions, one of which he returned 43 yards for a touchdown. He also was credited with 12 pass breakups and 41 total tackles, including four tackles for losses.

The 24-year-old Jean-Baptiste spent five years in college, starting at junior college in 2009 for academic reasons. However, he took a redshirt in his only year at Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College, where he was discovered by a Nebraska coach who had visited the school to see someone else. He transferred to Nebraska in 2010, where he was a receiver until a few games into the 2011 season, when he switched to defensive back.

Jean-Baptiste was among top performers in both the vertical jump and broad jump at the NFL scouting combine. His vertical jump of 41½ inches ranked first among cornerbacks, while his broad jump of 10-8 tied for third.

Big-Ten-LogoROSEMONT, Ill. – The conference office announced the 2014 Big Ten Baseball Tournament bracket on Saturday, with Indiana securing the top seed after winning the Big Ten Championship. This year’s tournament will feature an eight-team field for the first time and will be held May 21-25 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb., home of the College World Series.

The Hoosiers, making their 11th all-time appearance in the Big Ten Tournament, claimed the No. 1 seed for the second straight season after going 21-3 in Big Ten play, making their .875 conference winning percentage the highest since Ohio State’s .893 winning percentage (25-3) in 1999. Indiana opens play against No. 8 Iowa at 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday. The Hawkeyes ended the year with a 10-14 conference mark and earn their ninth Big Ten Tournament berth in program history.

Nebraska is the No. 2 seed after finishing the season with an 18-6 mark in conference play. The Huskers have appeared in each of the last three Big Ten Tournaments. Nebraska will face No. 7 Ohio State at 1 p.m. CT on Wednesday. The Buckeyes finished the year with a 10-14 mark in conference play and rank second all-time with 27 Big Ten Tournament appearances. Illinois claims the tournament’s No. 3 seed after posting a 17-7 record in the Big Ten. The Illini make their 20th all-time appearance in the conference tournament. Illinois will face No. 6 Michigan State in the first game of the Big Ten Tournament at 9 a.m. CT on Wednesday. Illini Even Series with Huskers

husker baseballLincoln – Illinois’ pitching staff kept the No. 26 Nebraska baseball team (36-18, 17-6 Big Ten) off balance all night as Kevin Duchene and Ronnie Muck combined to allow one run on four hits in the 5-1 victory for the Fighting Illini (31-18, 17-6 Big Ten) on Friday night at Hawks Field in front of a crowd of 4,549.

The loss snapped Nebraska’s eight-game winning streak and it’s also the first loss in the month of May for the Huskers, who started the month 7-0.

Duchene, who was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a freshman All-American by multiple publications last season, found his rhythm after giving up a one-out home run to Blake Headley in the second that gave Nebraska a 1-0 lead. After the homer, the sophomore lefty retired 14 straight Huskers before Michael Pritchard and Pat Kelly opened the seventh with back-to-back singles. Duchene finished the night with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work and improved to 3-1 on the year.

Pritchard’s leadoff single was his 240th career base hit at Nebraska, moving him into a tie for 11th in school history with former Husker and current Kansas City Royal Alex Gordon.

Muck took the mound in the seventh after the consecutive singles and loaded the bases with a walk to Tanner Lubach. Down 5-1, the Huskers had their shot at a rally, but Muck dug in and struck out three straight Huskers to end the threat. Muck ended the game by retiring nine straight Huskers to earn his third save of the season.

Nebraska starter Aaron Bummer cruised through the first four innings, allowing no runs on four hits. The junior lefty was unable to work past the fifth though, when he gave up three runs on four hits, including a two-run homer by Adam Walton, who was 3-for-4 on the night with a single, double and home run.

The Illini added an insurance run in both the sixth and seventh innings on their way to evening the three-game series at a game apiece.

With the Huskers loss the Indiana Hoosiers are now locked into the No. 1 seed at next week’s Big Ten Tournament. The Huskers and Illini will battle tomorrow for the No. 2 seed at the tournament and the loser will be slotted as the No. 3 seed.

Tomorrow’s regular-season finale is slated for 1:05 p.m. and it will be Senior Day at Hawks Field. Greg Sharpe and Lane Grindle will have the call across the Husker Sports Network, while the Big Ten Network will televise the game on tape delay at 5 p.m.

Eagles Let Martinez Go Because of Failed Physical

Taylor Martinez

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez’s free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles has been voided because he failed a physical.

His father, Casey Martinez, wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Wednesday that Taylor continues to struggle with a left-foot injury that dates to early last season. Casey Martinez said the Eagles let Taylor go after evaluating his medical file from Nebraska and taking X-rays of the foot.

Taylor Martinez is considering surgery and hopes to get another opportunity with an NFL team.

The Eagles signed Martinez as an undrafted free agent Sunday. He played in only four games his senior season because of the injury. He left Nebraska as the program’s career leader in total offense, passing yards, career touchdown passes and starts by a quarterback.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska linebacker Josh Banderas and a member of the men’s track team face felony charges in connection with the thefts of seven bicycles on campus.

Sgt. Douglas Petersen said Tuesday that university police received a report of two individuals using bolt cutters to remove bikes from racks and loading the bikes into a pickup about 5 p.m. Monday. Lincoln police stopped the pickup near campus and arrested Banderas and Lucas Keifer.

Banderas and Keifer are charged with possession of burglary tools and theft by unlawful taking. Each was released on a $3,500 bond.

The athletic department said in a statement that administrators and coaches are aware of the incident and have no comment.

Petersen said Banderas and Keifer were cooperative, with one telling an officer stealing the bikes was “bone-headed.”
