Huskers Battle Fighting Illini on Saturday

UNLNo. 8 Nebraska (10-1, 4-1 Big Ten) looks to continue its momentum from last weekend’s wins when the Huskers battle 17th-ranked Illinoison Saturday afternoon at Huff Hall in Champaign, Ill.

The dual between the Huskers and Fighting Illini is set for a 4 p.m. CT broadcast on the Big Ten Network. The commentary will be provided by Tim Johnson (play-by-play), Jim Gibbons (color analyst) and Shane Sparks (sideline reporter). The matchup can also be tracked on Twitter by following @HuskerWrestling, and scoring will be available on TrackWrestling.com.

The all-time series between the schools is tied at 3-3-0, with Nebraska posting the most recent victory in a thrilling 18-15 triumph over the Illini at the NU Coliseum last season. All five of Nebraska’s ranked wrestlers won their matches to spark the upset of then-No. 5 Illinois in front of 1,365 fans.

This season, Nebraska enters the matchup after knocking off a pair of ranked Big Ten foes on the road last weekend. On Friday, Jan. 24, the Huskers took down then-No. 11 Ohio State, 28-12, in Columbus, Ohio. Two days later, Nebraska cruised past then-No. 21 Purdue by a 28-9 margin in West Lafayette, Ind.

Tim Lambert (125), Shawn Nagel (133) and TJ Dudley (184) each earned pins over the weekend and are each projected to start on Saturday afternoon against Illinois. Lambert, the No. 9 wrestler by InterMat, will face defending national champion Jesse Delgado in Champaign.

Nagel, a senior, will also take on a ranked grappler as he takes the mat against No. 11 Zane Richards. No. 9 Dudley is set to face redshirt freshman Nikko Reyes.

Top-ranked 157-pounder James Green enters the weekend with a perfect 24-0 mark as he faces No. 13 Jackson Morse on Saturdayafternoon. Green leads a trio of Husker juniors in the top five who will compete this weekend.

No. 4 Robert Kokesh (174) wrestles Tony Dallago, while No. 5 Jake Sueflohn (149) grapples against Caleb Ervin. At 197 pounds, Nebraska could start either Caleb Kolb or Spencer Johnson. Additional Huskers scheduled to wrestle on Saturday include Colton McCrystal (141), Austin Wilson (165) and Collin Jensen (HWT).

Petteway hit 10-of-15 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, while also going 11-of-14 from the foul line. His 35-point night was the highest in conference action, while the Huskers’ 82 points were the most in a conference game since 2011.

Petteway has been one of the best newcomers in the Big Ten, as the 6-foot-6 guard/forward is third in the conference in scoring at 18.2 points per game and has reached double figures in each of the last 15 games. In Big Ten games, he has been even better, ranking second in scoring (19.2 ppg), eighth in rebounding (6.6 rpg) and 10th in field goal percentage (.495).

The Huskers have been tough in their new home, going 9-1 in the first season at Pinnacle Bank Arena with the only loss coming in a 71-70 setback to Michigan on Jan. 9.

Indiana (13-7, 3-4 Big Ten) comes to Lincoln after turning in one of its best defensive performances of the year, holding Illinois to 46 points in a 56-46 victory. Huskers to Honor Griffin Before Wednesday Clash with Michigan

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska women’s basketball team will honor Husker legend Kelsey Griffin Wednesday night in pregame ceremonies before the Big Red takes on Michigan in a key Big Ten battle.

Tip-off between the Huskers (13-5, 3-3 Big Ten) and Wolverines (14-6, 5-2 Big Ten) is set for 7 p.m. (CT) with live statewide television provided by NET. Larry Punteney and Brenda VanLengen will be on the call in a game that also will be streamed live by BTN.com All-Access.

Nebraska is coming off a 63-59 loss at Northwestern on Sunday that came down to the final seconds. It marked NU’s fourth Big Ten game decided by four points or less, including a 77-75 loss to nationally ranked Purdue in NU’s last game at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Jan. 19. The Huskers opened Big Ten play with a 66-65 victory over Northwestern and added an 88-85 overtime win over Minnesota on Jan. 16.

While the Huskers are hungry for a win to close January, the Wolverines will be looking to remain unbeaten in true road games this season while shooting for their fourth straight Big Ten road win. Michigan improved to 3-0 on the road in conference play with a 60-44 win at Wisconsin on Sunday.

Before the Huskers take aim at stopping Michigan’s road winning streak, Nebraska will take time out to honor Griffin. The 2010 first-team All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year will join Husker legends Karen Jennings and Maurtice Ivy in having her jersey retired. Griffin was Nebraska’s first-ever Senior CLASS Award winner across any sport and the 2010 Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She finished her illustrious college career with 2,033 points and 1,019 rebounds.

While Griffin will make history before the game, two-time All-American and first-team All-Big Ten forward Jordan Hooper could join her in a truly historic night. The 6-2 senior forward needs just five points to catch Griffin on NU’s all-time scoring list and 10 rebounds to join Griffin and Jennings as the only Huskers in history with 2,000 points and 1,000 boards.

Biggs Dismissed From Huskers Basketball Team

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – University of Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles made the following statement Tuesday morning on the status of Deverell Biggs.

“I’ve made the very difficult decision that Deverell Biggs will no longer be a part of our basketball program. We have consistently emphasized accountability for our student-athletes on the court, off the court and in the classroom. Individual accountability affects the entire group. As a basketball program, we are moving forward and perhaps a fresh start for Deverell may be beneficial to him as well.

Deverell will still have access to all of our academic resources to maintain his eligibility and progress toward graduation.  Deverell is good young man.  My hope is that he remains at Nebraska and finishes his classes this spring and finds another program where he can flourish.  We wish him all the best.”

Biggs appeared in 15 games for the Huskers this season, averaging 9.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest after redshirting in 2012-13.

Huskers to Honor Griffin with Jersey Retirement Wednesday Night

Kelsey Griffin Nebraska Huskers Jersey Retirement Basketball WNBALincoln – The Nebraska women’s basketball program is adding another name and number to its wall of honor inside the new Pinnacle Bank Arena – and this one is a legend.

Kelsey Griffin, one of the most accomplished Huskers both on and off the court in program history, will be honored by Nebraska with the retirement of her No. 23 jersey on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when the Huskers take on Michigan.

Tip time is set for 7 p.m., and fans are encouraged to arrive early for a pregame ceremony that will occur shortly after 6:30 p.m. Doors to Pinnacle Bank Arena open at 5:30. Tickets are available now at Huskers.com or by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED.

Prior to her jersey retirement ceremony on Wednesday night, Griffin will appear at Coach Connie Yori’s weekly press conference on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Griffin also will be on the air with the play-by-play voice of Nebraska women’s basketball Matt Coatney and Coach’s Yori on her weekly Husker Sports Network call-in show on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

While Griffin’s number No. 23 will be prominently displayed in Pinnacle Bank Arena, it will continue to be worn by current Husker junior Emily Cady.

Griffin will join 1993 Wade Trophy Winner and CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Famer Karen Jennings (No. 51) and 1988 Big Eight Player-of-the-Year Maurtice Ivy (No. 30) among Nebraska’s retired jersey honorees.

Griffin, who is traveling back to Nebraska on Monday from her second basketball season with the Bendigo Spirit in Australia, to receive the honor, said she was “blown away” by the news that her jersey was being retired.

“Having my jersey retired is such an incredible honor. It means so much to me, it is hard to put into words,” Griffin said.  There have been so many people along the way who have helped make this possible, and it means more because of who I was able to accomplish this with. Nebraska is such an incredible university and amazing place. It’s filled with great people, and it is because of all these attributes that makes my jersey retirement so special.”

Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said the time was right to honor Griffin.

“Kelsey Griffin is one of the greatest players and greatest people in the history of Nebraska women’s basketball,” Yori said. “You look at what she accomplished while she was here both on the court, in the classroom and in the community, then you look at what she has done in the WNBA and overseas, and it is pretty amazing. Those accomplishments probably only tell people a small part of the story of how tremendous a person Kelsey really is. I am so happy that we can honor her in this way, and I can’t wait to see her on January 29th.”

Griffin, a first-team All-American on the court and a national player-of-the-year finalist in 2010, became the face of Nebraska women’s basketball for five seasons (2006-10). The lightly recruited 6-2 forward from Eagle River, Alaska, powered Nebraska’s rise to national prominence by earning three first-team All-Big 12 Conference awards.

Griffin also led Nebraska to a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007, 2008 and 2010. Her final season as a Husker, she etched a permanent place in Husker history as part of a six-player senior class that led Nebraska to an unbeaten regular season (29-0), 30 consecutive victories, a Big 12 Conference regular-season title and Nebraska’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Sweet 16. She captured Big 12 Player-of-the-Year honors while leading NU to a 32-2 final record that included a 16-0 Big 12 mark.

She ranks No. 3 on Nebraska’s all-time scoring list with 2,033 points, while ranking No. 2 in the Husker record book with 1,019 career rebounds. She joins 1993 Wade Trophy winner and fellow first-team All-American Karen Jennings as the only players in Nebraska history with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Griffin also set Nebraska’s career record with 40 double-doubles in her four years on the court in Lincoln. Her 127 career starts rank No. 2 in school history. As a senior, Griffin averaged 20.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, including 20 double-doubles. She also earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team by notching 60 steals, 26 blocked shots and took a remarkable 29 charges on the year.

Her efforts as a senior earned her unanimous first-team All-America honors, and she was a finalist for every major national player-of-the-year award, including the Wade, Naismith and Wooden awards. While fueling Nebraska’s run to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, tournament became NU’s first-ever winner of the Senior CLASS Award, recognizing her achievements in the community and the classroom, while honoring her character and success in competition.

Griffin also was honored as Nebraska’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2009-10, before earning the No. 3 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft. Although drafted by the Minnesota Lynx, Griffin was quickly traded to the Connecticut Sun, where she earned a spot on the WNBA All-Rookie Team in 2010. She completed her fourth professional season with the Sun in 2013, starting all 34 games and averaging career bests of 8.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. In her four-year WNBA career, she has played in 133 games with 61 starts for Connecticut.

In addition to her WNBA career, Griffin has played professionally in Hungary, Israel and the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons with the Bendigo Spirit in Australia’s WNBL. In 2012-13, Griffin led the Spirit to the WNBL title and was named the MVP of the championship series. This season, she is averaging 12.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, while playing alongside former Husker teammate and 2012 Olympian Chelsea Aubry.
