The Huskers held Penn State to 35 percent shooting and out-rebounded PSU, 40-35, but 14 turnovers – including three in the final stretch – led to 22 points, a deciding factor in Thursday’s loss.

Nebraska, which has played four of its first six Big Ten games on the road, caps a busy week with its third game since Monday when the Golden Gophers come to town. Minnesota is 15-5 on the year following an 81-68 win over No. 9 Wisconsin on Wednesday.

Huskers Open Practice at Hawks Field

husker baseballLincoln – The Nebraska baseball team opened the 2014 season on Friday, as the team had its first official practice of the season. The team was able to get outside at Hawks Field starting at 2:30 p.m., before later moving to the Alex Gordon Training Complex to hit.

Head Coach Darin Erstad and several players met with the media prior to practice to discuss the 2014 season.

“This is three years in a row we’ve been outside in January,” Erstad said. “Our guys have prepared well and put themselves in a situation and succeed.”

For the first time in a while the Huskers have a nucleus of starting pitchers returning in senior Christian DeLeon, junior Kyle Kubat and junior Aaron Bummer.

“If those three are healthy they’ve earned the right to thrown on the weekend,” Erstad said. “They’ve all worked hard to get better and it’s nice to have those guys available.”

The Huskers will continue to practice over the next three weeks, before playing their opening game of the 2014 season on Friday, Feb. 14, in Tempe, Ariz., against Pacific. The Huskers will play four games in three days at Tempe Diablo Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Following Friday’s game with the Tigers, the Huskers are scheduled to play a pair of games on Saturday against 2013 College World Series qualifier Oregon State at Noon and then against Gonzaga at 4 p.m. The Huskers and Zags wrap up the weekend on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Board of Regents Approves Memorial Stadium Fan Experience Improvements

Memorial-Stadium-Huskers-NeThe University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the project budget for Memorial Stadium Fan Experience Improvements at its Friday meeting. The $12.3 million project will replace the stadium’s existing sound system and install a wireless network system to improve connectivity.

“We are very appreciative of Chancellor Harvey Perlman’s support and The Board of Regents’ approval of the Memorial Stadium Fan Experience Improvement Project,” Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst said.  “This most important project will install a new sound system and wireless network inside Memorial Stadium.  These improvements are designed to provide the best college football fans in America with the best game-day experience possible.  It is important that we continually strive to improve our fan experience in each of our athletic venues and this project is a big step in that direction.”

The existing sound system at Memorial Stadium is more than 20 years old, and while still functional, the normal life expectancy of such systems is 15 years.  The project will replace the sound system with a new, single-point source sound system housed in the north end zone.  Initial design concepts for the sound system call for multiple speaker arrays and cabinets that will be attached to the top and sides of the HuskerVision screen on the roof of the Osborne Athletic Complex.

The new sound system will allow fans in all parts of the stadium to enjoy the full Nebraska football game-day experience, including HuskerVision features, public address announcements and other audio and video features.

Installation of a wireless network system (WiFi) at Memorial Stadium is the second component of the Memorial Stadium Fan Experience Improvement Project.  The explosive growth of smartphones, tablets and other wireless devices in the past decade has fueled demand for continuous connectivity.  In past years, connectivity and cell phone service at Memorial Stadium has been limited.

The new wireless network system will allow fans better access to Internet applications from their smartphones regardless of carrier or location, which should relieve stress to cellular networks for voice calls and text messaging.  Nebraska Athletics plans to develop a new, all-encompassing Memorial Stadium game-day smartphone application that will include video features, dynamic location-based services and an engaging mobile platform.

Additionally, this project will replace the existing flag poles atop North Stadium with taller, larger poles that accommodate larger display flags which will be more visible from both inside and outside the Stadium.

Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in March and conclude before the start of the 2014 season.  Funding for this project comes from premium seating contributions.  Nebraska opens the 2014 football season against Florida Atlantic on Aug. 30at Memorial Stadium.

Huskers Drop Heartbreaker at Penn State

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballState College, Pa.  – A late comeback by Penn State spoiled a golden opportunity for the Nebraska basketball team to capture a road win, as the Nittany Lions posted a 58-54 win Thursday evening.

Nebraska (9-9, 1-5 B1G) led 51-47 after a Deverell Biggs basket with 2:24 left, but Penn State closed the game on an 11-3 run to earn their first conference win and hand the Huskers a stinging defeat.

The Huskers clung to a 51-50 lead, but Tim Frazier stole the ball from Biggs and found D.J. Newbill for a basket, and he was fouled on the play. Newbill, who finished with a game-high 16 points, converted the 3-point play to make it 53-31. After an errant shot on Nebraska’s next possession, John Johnson’s 3-pointer with 18 seconds left gave the Nittany Lions (10-10, 1-6) a five-point lead.

Nebraska still had chances in the final seconds, as Terran Petteway’s 3-pointer with 12 seconds left pulled the Huskers within 56-54. On the inbounds, pass, the Huskers’ pressure forced a PSU turnover, giving the Nebraska one final opportunity. The Huskers were unable to get off a shot, as the 14thturnover of the evening gave the Nittany Lions the ball before Frazier was fouled. The fifth-year senior hit both free throws to ice PSU’s first Big Ten win, as he finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Ray Gallegos joined Petteway in double figures with 10 points, as Nebraska shot just 35.8 percent. PSU shoot just 35 percent and were out-rebounded 40-35, but turned the 14 Husker miscues into 22 points.

In the first half, the Huskers did an excellent job defensively, holding the Nittany Lions to 24 percent shooting in building a 29-22 halftime lead. Early on, Ray Gallegos got the Huskers going, hitting a pair of 3-pointers to give the Huskers an early 9-8 lead. The teams would trade baskets until Nebraska took control late in the half with a 10-2 spurt. Walter Pitchford’s dunk got the spurt going, while Petteway added five points in the run before Deverell Biggs’ 3-pointer gave the Huskers a 26-17 lead with 4:38 left in the half.

Penn State would fight back behind Johnson, who had 10 points off the bench for the hosts in the first half, as he scored five straight to cut the lead to 26-22, but Pitchford, who finished with eight points and seven rebounds, closed the half with a big 3-pointer to beat the buzzer.

Pitchford hit his second 3-pointer of the game to extend the Husker lead to 32-24, but Penn Stare would respond with a 7-0 run to pull within 32-31 after a Newbill jumper. The Huskers would come back with a 6-0 run of their own, as Shields’ 3-pointer – his first shot attempt of the day – ended the run, and Nebraska pushed the lead to 38-31 after a Smith tip-in with 12:28 left.

Gallegos with a jumper to extend the lead to 45-39 with 6:44 left, but Penn State would run off the next eight points, tying the score at 45 after a Taylor putback with 5:16 left and taking the lead for the first time this half on a Newbill drive with 4:19 left.

Once again, it was Shields with the big shot, as the sophomore’s 3-pointer from the corner neded the run and gave Nebraska a 48-47 lead. The Huskers pushed the lead to 51-47 after a Biggs bucket, but could not put Penn State away

Huskers Face Buckeyes, Boilermakers Over Weekend

UNLThe No. 10 Nebraska wrestling team (8-1, 2-1 Big Ten) looks to rebound following its first loss of the season when the Huskers visit Ohio State and Purdue this weekend.

The Huskers travel to Columbus, Ohio, on Friday to face the No. 11 Buckeyes at 6 p.m. CT. On Sunday, NU squares off with No. 21 Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., starting at noon. Ohio State enters the weekend with a 7-2 record, while the Boilermakers take a 5-4 mark into their matchup with Nebraska.

Both duals will be streamed on the Big Ten Digital Network and can also be followed on Twitter via the @HuskerWrestling account.

Nebraska is making its first road dual start since November and looks to get back to its winning ways after suffering a loss to then-No. 3 Iowa at home last weekend. Despite the 22-9 setback, however, 157-pounder James Green led a trio of ranked Huskers to victories over the Hawkeyes. Green took down then-No. 1 Derek St. John, 9-7, while Robert Kokesh (174) and Jake Sueflohn (149) each notched victories over ranked opponents.

As a result of Green’s victory, he claimed the top spot in the national rankings and heads into this weekend with a perfect 22-0 record.

The Huskers faced both Ohio State and Purdue in 2012 during Nebraska’s first year as a member of the Big Ten Conference. NU knocked off Ohio State on Jan. 6, 2012 at home, 18-16, before falling to the Buckeyes at the National Duals in Stillwater, Okla. Nebraska won by a 24-9 margin over Purdue at home on Jan. 22.

The game can also be heard on Huskers.com and is available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as Sirius and XM Radio.

The Huskers (9-8, 1-4 B1G) came through with a strong performance against the Buckeyes, shooting 50 percent from the field against an Ohio State team which was seventh nationally in scoring defense and 22nd nationally in field goal defense. The Huskers, who picked up their first win over a ranked opponent in two years, became only the second team to shoot 50 percent against the Buckeyes this season. Nebraska also did a strong job on the glass, out-rebounding Ohio State, 33-27 and forced 13 turnovers which led to 21 Husker points.

For the Huskers, sophomore Shavon Shields enjoyed a breakout game, as he had been bothered by a knee bruise suffered earlier in the month.  The 6-foot-7 sophomore had 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, and nine rebounds against the Buckeyes to lead three Huskers in double figures. Fellow sophomore Terran Petteway had 18 points and five rebounds, while Deverell Biggs came off the bench with 11 points and three assists.

Petteway leads three Huskers in double figures at 17.4 points per game to rank fifth in the Big Ten in scoring. The sophomore has reached double figures in 16 of 17 games, including each of the last 14 contests. Of Nebraska’s seven top scorers, only Shields (11.4 ppg) and senior Ray Gallegos (7.9 ppg) were in the rotation last season.

Penn State (9-10, 0-6 B1G) comes into Thursday’s game looking to snap a six-game losing streak following an excruciating 65-64 loss at Purdue on Saturday. PSU had a three-point lead with 16 seconds left, only to see the Boilermakers rally for the win. It is one of three conference losses by three points or less over the last four contests.

Huskers to Have Bone Marrow Donation Awareness as Part of Suits and Sneakers Weekend

BTN Live Big 10Lincoln – The Nebraska basketball program is teaming up with the American Cancer Society, as part of the NABC Suits and Sneakers Weekend. The Huskers host Minnesota on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 5 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Fans and students can help the Huskers in a couple of ways to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
