Romero Allocated to Seattle Reign FC for 2014 Season

huskersoccerChicago – The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced the allocation of Nebraska soccer All-American Ari Romero to the Seattle Reign FC for the 2014 NWSL season. A total of 50 allocated National Team players will be participating in the upcoming season with 26 Americans, 16 Canadians and eight Mexicans.

Former NU soccer student-athletes Karina LeBlanc and Selenia Iacchelli were also allocated to the Portland Thorns FC and the Western New York Flash, respectively.

In 2013, Romero became the 12th Husker All-American and claimed Nebraska’s 18th NSCAA All-America award in school history after her senior season where NU collected a pair of Big Ten titles and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

From Jan. 3-6, the NWSL will have a league-wide “trade period” during which all NWSL teams may make trades throughout the four days. However, teams will not be allowed to waive players currently on their roster until after the NWSL Expansion Draft.

The Surprise, Ariz. native became a stalwart at center back for the Huskers throughout her career and flourished in her final season with the Scarlet and Cream. The NSCAA All-Region First Team honoree and Big Ten Defender of the Year displayed a tireless work ethic as she worked every second of the final 15 matches on her way to averaging more than 91 minutes per match in 2013.

U.S. Soccer is subsidizing the salaries of 26 players, while the Canadian Soccer Association and the Federation of Mexican Football will do the same for 16 and eight players, respectively.

No. 18 Nebraska Holds Off Northwestern 66-65

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Rachel Theriot hit the go-ahead jumper with 1:39 remaining, and finished with 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds to help No. 18 Nebraska outlast Northwestern 66-65 in a Big 10 Conference opener for both teams Thursday night.

After surrendering an 11-0 run to trail 65-61 with 2:52 remaining, the Cornhuskers (11-2, 1-0) wouldn’t go down as Tear’a Laudermill sank a 3-pointer. Theriot then drilled a jump-shot on the next possession to put Nebraska on top for the final margin.

Northwestern (10-4, 0-1) missed two potential go-ahead 3-pointers and committed a turnover in the final two minutes.

Laudermill scored 14 points and Jordan Hooper also had 14 with 10 rebounds. Emily Cady added 11 points and nine boards for the Cornhuskers.

Christen Inman led the Wildcats with 19 points and Nia Coffey had 16 with nine rebounds. Lauren Douglas scored 13 and Ashley Dearey had nine boards and seven assists.

Huskers Look to Knock off Unbeaten Buckeyes

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska basketball team looks to snap a two-game losing streak on Saturday, as the Huskers travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a matchup with No. 3 Ohio State.

Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. at Value City Arena and the game will be carried nationally on BTN (Ch. 610 on DirecTV, Chs. 439 and 9500 on Dish; Chs. 2, 1333 on Time Warner Cable) with Eric Collins and Jim Jackson on the call. The game will also be available online and on mobile devices on BTN2Go.

The Huskers (8-5, 0-1 B1G) enter Saturday’s game with an 8-5 record after dropping a 67-57 setback at No. 22 Iowa on Tuesday evening. In that game, the Huskers cut a 20-point deficit to 60-55 with under two minutes remaining, but Iowa hit enough free throws in the final minute to hold on. Nebraska, which was last in the Big Ten in rebounding, enjoyed a 44-42 advantage on the glass against Iowa, but could not overcome 30 percent shooting from the floor against the Hawkeyes.

If the Huskers are to pull their first upset against a top-five team away from Lincoln since 1994 on Saturday, the Huskers will need another strong rebounding effort and create some points against a Buckeye squad that leads the Big Ten in scoring defense at 55.1 points per game.

In the loss against Iowa, Nebraska put four players in double figures and received strong performances from sophomores Terran Petteway and Walter Pitchford. Petteway led all scorers with 20 points – his third straight 20-point game – and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds, while Pitchford put together his best game at Nebraska with 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Nebraska and Michigan State are the only Big Ten teams on the road twice during the opening week, and the Huskers will be tested by an Ohio State (14-0, 1-0 BIG) team which is one of the last eight remaining unbeaten teams in the country. LaQuinton Ross leads a balanced OSU attack with 13.8 points per game, while All-Big Ten guard Aaron Craft averages 9.4 points, 5.0 assists and a Big Ten-best 2.5 steals per game.

Huskers Open 2014 Slate with Wyoming

UNLThe No. 8 Nebraska wrestling team (5-0) resumes its dual season on Friday night by hosting Wyoming (1-3) in the Huskers’ first matchup of the new year at the Devaney Center at 7 p.m. CT.

The Huskers look to collect their sixth dual victory of the season after competing in two tournaments in Nevada during December. NU earned runner-up honors at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational before capturing the team crown at the Reno Tournament of Champions.

The Huskers and Cowboys will meet for the 47th time in series history, with Nebraska holding a 32-14 advantage. Last season, NU won by a 22-15 margin in Laramie, Wyo. on Nov. 11, 2012.

Friday night’s dual can be watched online on the Big Ten Digital Network. Scoring will be provided on TrackWrestling.com and updates can be followed on Nebraska’s Twitter page @HuskerWrestling.

Nebraska is making its first dual appearance since the Stanford Duals on Nov. 30 in Stanford, Calif., where the Huskers went 3-0 against Utah Valley, Stanford and CSU-Bakersfield. Friday’s dual will be the first of a four-match home stand over the next three weekends at the Devaney Center for the Huskers. Next weekend, NU battles Indiana on Friday, Jan. 10 before hosting Penn on Saturday, Jan. 11. The homestand concludes on Jan. 18 against Big Ten foe Iowa at 4:30 p.m.

The Huskers could see multiple different lineups with two wrestlers projected at 125, 133, 174 and 184 pounds. At 133 pounds, Colton McCrystal and Ben Morgan are listed, while either No. 4 Robert Kokesh or Micah Barnes will see time at 174 pounds. At 184 pounds, Nebraska will start either TJ Dudley or Caleb Kolb, while Tim Lambert and Eric Coufal are each listed at 125 pounds.

Ranked wrestlers James Green (No. 4 at 157), Jake Sueflohn (No. 6 at 149) and Austin Wilson (No. 14 at 165) are projected to start for the Huskers after placing at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 22. Green and Sueflohn captured their respective weight class titles, while Wilson finished second.

Adam Joseph (141), Spencer Johnson (197) and Collin Jensen (HWT) are also probable starters for Nebraska this weekend.

Nebraska Beats No. 23 Georgia 24-19 in Gator Bowl

nebraska_helmetJACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Tommy Armstrong Jr. connected with Quincy Enunwa for two touchdowns, including a 99-yarder in the third quarter, and Nebraska held on to beat No. 23 Georgia 24-19 in the rain-soaked Gator Bowl on Wednesday.

Playing in their 50th bowl, the Cornhuskers (9-4) ended a four-game losing streak against teams from the Southeastern Conference. The streak included a 45-31 loss to Georgia in the Capital One Bowl last season.

The rematch was much different.

Nebraska did a solid job against running back Todd Gurley, who ran for 125 yards and a touchdown last year. Gurley finished with 86 yards on the ground.

Gurley was more effective in the passing game, catching seven passes for 97 yards and a score. His 25-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter cut Nebraska’s lead to 24-19.

But the Huskers stopped Georgia (8-5) twice on fourth down in the closing minutes.

No. 22 Iowa Beats Nebraska 67-57

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballIOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa looked shaky at times but Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery will take the win.

Devyn Marble had 15 points and eight rebounds and No. 22 Iowa opened its Big Ten season with a win for the first time since 2006 with a 67-57 victory over Nebraska on Tuesday night.

Aaron White scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half for the Hawkeyes (12-2, 1-0), who led by as many as 20 points in the second half.

For McCaffery, the late struggle doesn’t matter. Iowa preserved the win and he knows the Big Ten gauntlet continues on Sunday with No. 4 Wisconsin.

“You watch the Big Ten today and it’s just brutal,” McCaffery said. “I think you feel good about any Big Ten win. When you look at this league, there is no relief anywhere, there is just none. Whether you’re at home, no matter who you’re playing.”

Terran Petteway had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Nebraska (8-5, 0-1), which shot a season-low 29.9 percent from the field as it lost its 14th straight game to a ranked opponent.

White’s breakaway two-handed dunk put the Hawkeyes ahead 55-35 with 8:16 left — the biggest lead of the game.

Nebraska stormed back with a 20-5 run, capped off by Petteway’s 3-pointer with 1:45 left to cut the deficit to 60-55.

Nebraska got the ball back after an Iowa free throw, but Deverell Biggs’ pass deflected off the rim for a turnover.

The Hawkeyes — who missed 17 free throws in the game — hit 7 of 10 from the line in the final 2 minutes to secure the win.

Missed free throws are becoming a concern for McCaffery, even though the Hawkeyes rank in the middle of the Big Ten in free throw shooting.

Iowa has been inconsistent recently. The Hawkeyes missed late free throws in their losses to Villanova and Iowa State.

“They were going in and out,” said Marble, who made 7 of 11 against Nebraska. “All you can do is keep shooting them.”

Iowa won despite making only one 3-pointer and being outrebounded.

Nebraska put up 19 more field goal attempts than the Hawkeyes behind a staggering 17 offensive rebounds. It didn’t help much as the Cornhuskers had only 15 second-chance points.

“We just missed too many inside shots,” Nebraska coach Tim Miles said. “I don’t know why. It’s going to make us sick watching that tape.”

Walter Pitchford scored 13 points for the Cornhuskers and Biggs added 12.

Iowa shut down Ray Gallegos, who hit a career-high seven 3-pointers against the Hawkeyes last season. Gallegos didn’t get off a shot attempt in 23 minutes.

The Hawkeyes led 30-23 after a tough first half where they went nearly 5½ minutes without a field goal.

White jolted Iowa and the fans inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena with another dunk — this time an impressive reverse slam in transition.

A couple of minutes later, White made two free throws to tie the game 22-22.

Then White hit a rare 3-pointer — only his third of the season — to put the Hawkeyes back in front. White scored two more baskets down the stretch to help Iowa end the half on a 12-1 run.

Iowa’s Jarrod Uthoff scored 11 points.

Hooper Claims Big Ten Weekly Award

jordan-hooperNebraska senior Jordan Hooper earned her first Big Ten Conference Women’s Basketball Player-of-the-Week award this season, sharing the honor with Minnesota’s Amanda Zahui B. on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Hooper erupted for 30 points and 11 rebounds in just 20 minutes in Nebraska’s win over Oral Roberts to close non-conference play. The 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., hit 11-of-15 shots from the field, including 4-of-8 three-pointers, and all four of her free throw attempts in the game. She added two assists, two steals and a blocked shot in an efficient all-around effort. Hooper scored 23 points and had eight rebounds in the first half, helping the Huskers produce a school-record 62 first-half points.

It was Hooper’s seventh career Big Ten Player-of-the-Week award.

Hooper and the Huskers open Big Ten Conference action against Northwestern on Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tip-off with the Wildcats is set for 8 p.m.

Huskers Host Talented Wildcats in Big Ten Opener

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe No. 18 Nebraska women’s basketball team will bid farewell to its five-game home stand by ushering in the New Year with its Big Ten Conference opener against Northwestern on Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Tip-off between the Huskers (10-2) and Wildcats (10-3) is set for 8 p.m. (CT), with tickets available now at Huskers.com. The game will be televised live nationally by the Big Ten Network with Kevin Kugler and Mary Murphy on the call.

Nebraska, which was the preseason pick of media and coaches to win the 2014 Big Ten title, closed non-conference play with a 10-2 record after rolling to an 89-53 win over Oral Roberts on Dec. 29. It was NU’s fourth straight win by 20 or more points during its current home stand.
The Big Red played one of the best halves of basketball in school history against ORU, erupting for a school-record 62 first-half points. Nebraska opened the game on a 24-0 run and built the lead to 35-2 in the first 10 minutes.

All-American Jordan Hooper unleashed the most productive and efficient game of her career with 30 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, a block and two steals in just 20 minutes. She hit 11-of-15 shots, including 4-of-8 threes, and all four of her free throws. The 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., also moved ahead of Kiera Hardy into No. 5 on Nebraska’s career scoring list. A two-time first-team All-Big Ten choice, Hooper enters her final Big Ten season with 1,933 points and 941 rebounds. Hooper is just 100 points and 78 rebounds shy of the career production of Nebraska’s 2010 first-team All-American Kelsey Griffin.

Coach Joe McKeown and Northwestern bring a young and athletic lineup to Lincoln. The Wildcats recently ran to an 84-54 win over ORU on Dec. 16.

Huskers Visit Jacksonville Hospital

nebraska_helmetJacksonville, Fla. – Following the Nebraska football team’s final practice in preparation of Wednesday’s Gator Bowl with the No. 23 Georgia Bulldogs, members of the team visited the Wolfson Children’s Hospital in downtown Jacksonville.

The visit provided an opportunity for the children in the hospital to meet role models and was an ideal way for the players from both Nebraska and Georgia to lift the spirits of local hospitalized children.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital is also the beneficiary of the Gator Bowl VyStar 5K Run that is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the Jacksonville Landing.

The Huskers will go through a final walkthrough tomorrow before meeting the Bulldogs at 11 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday, Jan. 1, at EverBank Field. The game is scheduled for a national-broadcast on ESPN2.

Check out the Huskers’ official FacebookTwitter and Instagram account for photos and videos throughout the Huskers stay in Jacksonville.
