Abdullah, Nebraska Run Past Purdue 44-7

UNLWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Ameer Abdullah ran for 126 yards and a touchdown to help Nebraska defeat Purdue 44-7 on Saturday.

Terrell Newby ran for 61 yards and Imani Cross added 56 yards and two touchdowns for the Cornhuskers (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten).

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez sat out with a turf toe injury. Tommy Armstrong Jr. started and completed just 6 of 18 passes for 43 yards with three interceptions. Ron Kellogg III stepped in and completed 10 of 13 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown.

Nebraska held Purdue to 216 yards, and the Boilermakers didn’t score until the final minute of the game. Purdue ran for just 32 yards on 25 carries.

Danny Etling completed 14 of 35 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown in his first career start. DeAngelo Yancey caught five passes for 146 yards and a touchdown for the Boilermakers (1-5, 0-2).

Armstrong to Start vs. Purdue

UNLLincoln, Neb.-The Nebraska football team wrapped up its preparation for Saturday’s Big Ten conference road opener against Purdue on Thursday afternoon. The team practiced in helmets and shorts for 90 minutes inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields.

Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media after practice, noting that redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong Jr. will be making his third start Saturday versus Purdue.

“As of right now it is (going to be) just like we have been at the quarterback position.” Pelini said.

Pelini also added that senior Quarterback Taylor Martinez will still make the trip up to West Lafayette, but will not play.

“Like I said, Taylor is still day-to-day, and he is getting better. He is a lot better than he has been.”

Another injury concern that Husker fans have been monitoring has been junior wide receiver Jamal Turner’s hamstring injury. Pelini noted that Turner practiced today and will be ready to go for Saturday’s matchup against the Boilermakers.

Something Husker fans haven’t been accustomed seeing was missed extra points and missed field goals after last Saturday’s victory over Illinois. Pelini said that senior transfer Pat Smith will be the man NU relies on in their kicking game this upcoming Saturday.

“I saw improvement, which after last week isn’t saying a whole heckuva lot, but I thought Patrick had a really good week, so the guy you will see in there is Patrick Smith.” Pelini said.

With Danny Etling making his first career start Saturday at quarterback for Purdue, Pelini believes that the Boilermaker offense will have a little bit different of a look, but should be very similar to what they have ran up to this point of the season.

“I think somewhat they have to run what they have been doing, but they might lean to some different plays or different personal groupings.” Pelini said, “When he came into the game last week they slung the ball around, and did not run the ball much when he was in the game.”

Nebraska will conduct a walk-thru in Lincoln on Friday morning before departing for West Lafayette. NU will face the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The game will be televised nationally on Big Ten Network.

Husker Defense Ready for Road Test

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.-The Nebraska football team continued its preparation for Saturday’s Big Ten conference road opener against Purdue on Wednesday afternoon. The team practiced in shoulder pads and shorts for just over two hours inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields.

Defensive Coordinator John Papuchis met with media after practice, noting that the coaching staff has already had a good look at Purdue’s true freshman quarterback Danny Etling over the past few days. Etling, a Terre Haute, Ind., native will be making his first career start against the Blackshirt defense.

“First things first we went through and watched the snaps he played this year and then got online and started watching some of his high school stuff—just trying to get a feel of who he is and what he is about.” Papuchis said, “He is a big, strong-armed kid. He is a talented player. Obviously it is his first start so we will see, but we respect his arm and what he is about.”

When asked if there was any ‘fear of the unknown’ going into Saturday’s matchup with a first-time quarterback, Papuchis seemed quite confident fear would not be the word.

“We will have to see how it plays out. I don’t think fear would be the word, but we are going to have to evaluate what they are going to do different with him under center.” Papuchis said.

Papuchis also mentioned that Etling may not be appear to be a run threat, but he does have the ability to get out of the pocket if needed.

It has been well noted throughout the past years that the strong Nebraska football fan base travels well to road games, sometimes even outnumbering the opponent’s fans. Even with that possibility this weekend, Papuchis noted that it is important for the young group of Huskers be ready to compete at a high level for an early kickoff.

“This is our first road test obviously, it was helpful for us, as young as we are to have five home games to start the year.” Papuchis said, “We have to have great focus and great concentration and with the fact that it is an early game (11 a.m.) we need get ready and go play.”

With a strong defensive performance last Saturday against Illinois, Papuchis believes that the Husker defense has built some confidence, and should continue to build and get better against Purdue Saturday.

“I thought confidence has to be earned, and I think our guys have practiced better this week, a little bit more confident like we wanted them to do.” Papuchis said, “To continue to build, we need to continue to play well Saturday.”

Nebraska will hit the practice field again on Thursday as the team moves closer to its sixth game of the season. NU will face the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The game will be televised nationally on Big Ten Network.

Huskers, Armstrong Ready for First Road Test

Tommy Armstrong Jr. Nebraska HuskersLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team continued its week of preparation for Saturday’s Big Ten Conference matchup at Purdue on Tuesday afternoon. The team practiced in full pads for just over two hours inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields.

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck addressed the media after practice, focusing on the Purdue defense the Huskers will faceon Saturday morning (11 a.m. CT start)

“Defensively, they play hard,” Beck said. “They run to the football. They tackle well, and they hit well. We have to come to play. They’re going to be fast, they’re going to play hard and they’re going to hit you.”

One area the Huskers will look to improve on against Purdue is the ability to finish drives late in the game. Although Nebraska outrushed Illinois 335-195 in Saturday’s Big Ten opener, the squad only scored three points in the final 17 minutes of the game. Coach Beck commented on his frustration and aims to improve that area this week against Purdue.

“We put in our plan today and there’s always a little bit of a learning curve when you first put stuff in,” Beck said. “We’re just trying to keep working to improve. Late in the last game, I thought we moved the ball okay, but we didn’t finish. We have to be better at finishing off those drives.”

A key to Nebraska’s success will once again be the play of quarterback Tommy Armstrong, as the redshirt freshman has thrown for 304 yards and three touchdowns this season, impressing Coach Beck with his composure.

“(Tommy Armstrong) has done a good job of being level-headed and staying poised,” Beck said. “I coached him pretty hard today, but I know that he’s the kind of guy that doesn’t let things get to him. He will need to do that on the road against a faster, more aggressive defensive football team.”

Husker fans should also be prepared to see Ron Kellogg III behind center on Saturday. According to Beck, Nebraska will use both quarterbacks in order to see who’s playing well and keep both ready in case of injury.

“You never know who’s got the hot hand,” Beck said. “You never know what’s going to happen. You better have guys ready to go in there and play. You have to play both (Tommy Armstrong) and (Ron Kellogg) so that if you have to go back to them later in the game, you aren’t going to a guy who hasn’t played at all.”

Nebraska will hit the practice field again on Wednesday as the team moves closer to its second conference game of the season. NU will face the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The game will be broadcast nationally on BTN.

Hooper Named to Preseason Wade Watch List

jordan-hooperLincoln – Two-time All-American Jordan Hooper earned a spot on the preseason Wade Watch List for the second consecutive year when the 25 candidates for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s National Player of the Year were announced on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Hooper, a 6-2 senior forward from Alliance, Neb., is a two-time WBCA and Associated Press honorable-mention All-American and a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection. She enters her senior season poised to become just the third player in Nebraska history to score 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in her career, joining 1993 Wade Trophy winner Karen Jennings and 2010 first-team WBCA All-American Kelsey Griffin.

Hooper, who has scored 1,685 points and pulled down 811 rebounds in starting the first 98 games of her Husker career, is also in position to shatter the school’s three-point record. She enters her senior season with 215 made three-pointers, just 52 shy of the school record held by three-time first-team All-Big 12 guard Kiera Hardy (2004-07). Hooper has averaged nearly 72 three-pointers per season at Nebraska, including 81 a year ago when she helped shoot the Huskers to the 2013 NCAA Sweet 16.

Over the summer, Hooper helped the USA Basketball Women’s World University Games Team to a gold medal in Kazan, Russia. In the championship game, Hooper earned a start and scored nine points while grabbing nine rebounds while going head-to-head against several members of Russia’s 2012 Olympic Team.

Five of Hooper’s World University Games teammates joined her on the Wade Watch List, including Baylor senior Odyssey Sims, Louisville senior Shoni Schimmel, Oklahoma senior Aaryn Ellenberg, Connecticut junior Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and LSU senior Theresa Plaisance.

Now in its 37th year, The Wade Trophy is named in honor of the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University coach, Lily Margaret Wade. Regarded as “The Heisman of Women’s Basketball,” the award is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA.

The preseason list is composed of top NCAA Division I women’s basketball players who best embody Wade’s spirit from 18 institutions and seven conferences. A committee of coaches, administrators and media from across the United States compiled the list using the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team, and overall playing ability.

Hooper was one of three players from the Big Ten Conference to earn mention on the preseason Wade Watch List, joining Penn State’s Maggie Lucas and Minnesota’s Rachel Banham.

Hooper will make her first appearance with the Huskers of the 2013-14 season, when the women’s basketball team hosts Big Red Tip-OffTuesday on Oct. 15 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The event, which begins at 5 p.m., will include a sneak peek at a portion of Nebraska’s practice, introductions of the 2013-14 Huskers by Coach Connie Yori, an opportunity for fans to select their seats for season tickets, and autographs with the 2013-14 Huskers.

Nebraska tips off exhibition play in its first season at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday, Oct. 27, against Pittsburg State at 2 p.m.

Huskers Finally go on Road after 5 in a Row at Home

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — It’s the second week of October, and Nebraska is finally preparing for its first road game.

The Cornhuskers (4-1, 1-0) visit Purdue (1-4, 0-1) on Saturday after playing their first five in Lincoln. Coach Bo Pelini said Monday the schedule has been a blessing for a young defense that has had lots of kinks to work out.

Fellow Big Ten member Indiana is the only other FBS team that played five in a row at home to start the season. Baylor of the Big 12 will go on the road for the first time this week after opening with four home games.

Receiver Kenny Bell says he’s taking the same attitude to Purdue that he would if the Huskers were going on the road to Michigan’s Big House.

Three Huskers Honored with Big Ten Weekly Awards

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersThe Nebraska volleyball team had three players honored by the Big Ten Conference on Monday as Kelsey Robinson was named the league’s Co-Player of the Week, Meghan Haggerty earned Defensive Player of the Week honors and Amber Rolfzen was selected as the Freshman of the Week.

The last time Nebraska had three players selected for weekly conference awards was on Oct. 27, 2008 when Jordan Larson (offensive player), Amanda Gates (defensive player) and Sydney Anderson (rookie) were all honored by the Big 12 Conference.

Robinson led the Huskers to wins over No. 8 Minnesota (3-0) and No. 23 Wisconsin (3-2) over the weekend. She averaged 6.3 kills per set and posted a .417 hitting percentage. She recorded a double-double against the Badgers, tallying a career-high 29 kills and a team-high 22 digs. Robinson posted 29 digs on the weekend, averaging 3.6 digs per set. She shares this week’s accolade with Lauren Wicinski of Michigan State. The honor marks her first Big Ten weekly award. The last Husker to earn Big Ten Player of the Week accolades was Lauren Cook on Aug. 27, 2012.

Haggerty also helped the Huskers post a 2-0 record on the weekend with 12 total blocks and an average of 1.5 blocks per set. She recorded a season-high 13 kills against Wisconsin and posted a .389 hitting percentage on the weekend. The honor marks her fifth career Big Ten weekly award and her first Defensive Player of the Week honor. The last Husker to earn Defensive Player of the Week accolades was Hayley Thramer on Nov. 12, 2012.

Amber Rolfzen tallied 12 total blocks on the weekend and averaged 1.5 blocks per set in helping Nebraska take down Minnesota and Wisconsin. She recorded a team-high eight blocks against the Badgers and added 20 digs and 11 kills on the weekend. Rolfzen collects her second Freshman of the Week honor as she last earned the award on Sept. 16, 2013.

Nebraska Dad Optimistic about Son’s Cancer News

Jack-Hoffman-Nebraska-Football-ESPYOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The father of Jack Hoffman says the family will continue raising money for cancer research while reveling in the good news about the 8-year-old Nebraska boy.

Andy Hoffman said Monday that his family has been thankful and cautiously excited since learning last week that Jack’s brain cancer is in remission.

Jack captured the hearts of Nebraska football fans when, with the help of the players, he ran for a touchdown during an intrasquad game that ended spring football practice earlier this year. The scoring scamper has been replayed on national TV and viewed nearly 8.4 million times on YouTube.

Hoffman said doctors are encouraging but mindful of the reality that more than half the children in Jack’s situation have relapses.
