Huskers Continue Preparing for Wyoming

Nebraska-Cornhuskers-Football-Blackshirts-HelmetsLincoln – The Nebraska football team continued its game-week preparations for Saturday’s season opener against Wyoming by practicing for a little over two hours in half pads on Tuesday inside the Hawks Championship Center and outdoors at the Gass Practice Fields.

With the season opener just four days away, second-year defensive coordinator John Papuchis said the Husker have made great progress in preparing for a productive Wyoming offense.

“Opening games, we usually get a bit of a jump (on opponent preparation),” Papuchis said. “On a Tuesday in a normal game week, today would be a big install day. Today was a little bit more of a review of the things we put in yesterday because we are a little bit ahead. I feel good about where we’re at. I like the way the guys approached today.”

Papuchis also offered some insight into players who could see significant playing time on Saturday, starting at safety, a position where Nebraska must replace both starters.

“I’m going to wait to say who we’re going to start, but I would imagine that (Corey) Cooper, Harvey (Jackson) and Andrew (Green) will all be playing a lot,” he said. “Charles (Jackson) is working hard. Charles is a talented kid.”

Papuchis then moved onto the linebackers, saying Nebraska’s rotation would depend largely on the type of offense Wyoming is running.

“This game is going to be a little bit unique in the fact that it’s going to be mostly spread stuff, at least that’s what we’re anticipating,” Papuchis said. “Our MIKE linebacker is going to be David Santos. We have a couple of guys that are working at that dime spot; Mo Seisay’s playing there, Nate Gerry’s playing there, Zaire Anderson’s playing there.

“It kind of depends on what we’re seeing. If there’s a tight end in the game for Wyoming, they’re going to see more true linebackers. If it’s four-wide, you’ll probably see more defensive backs.”

Finally, Papuchis was asked to breakdown the battle for starting positions on the defensive line.

“Up front, (defensive end) Jason Ankrah is going to start at one of the spots with (defensive tackle) Thad Randle. If we playedtomorrow, Vincent Valentine would start at the other tackle and the other end would be either (Avery) Moss or (Randy) Gregory.”

The Huskers are expected to feature plenty of younger defensive players on Saturday. All four of the linebackers Papuchis mentioned and two of the four defensive linemen are in their first or second year in the program. But while he’s anxious to see how the youngsters perform in a game, Papuchis said he’s more excited than anything at the arrival of the 2013 season.

“I’m excited for the season to be here,” he said. “Yes, I’m excited to see some of those young guys get their first opportunity to play, but in general, I’m just excited for the year to be here and to get it kicked off on Saturday.”

The Huskers will kick off their 124th season on Saturday from Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.

Most Big Ten Teams Returning a lot of Experience

Big-Ten-LogoLots of the names are the same around the Big Ten.

When it comes to quarterbacks, Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez and Illinois’ Nathan Scheelhaase are going into their fourth seasons as starters, Ohio State’s Braxton Miller is entering his third and Northwestern’s Kain Colter is heading into year three as a full- or part-time starter.

Eight teams return at least 16 starters. But Indiana, Wisconsin and Penn State are yet to name starting quarterbacks.

There are newcomers at other positions who could become well-known names by season’s end.

Huskers Set for 20 Games in First Season at Pinnacle Bank Arena

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – The Nebraska women’s basketball team will play a 20-game schedule loaded with NCAA Tournament-caliber competition, Coach Connie Yori and the Huskers announced on Tuesday.

Nebraska, which is coming off an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2013, will play the first exhibition game (Pittsburg State, Oct. 27, 2 p.m.) and the first regular-season basketball game (UCLA, Nov. 8, Noon) in the history of Pinnacle Bank Arena, which will hold its official ribbon cutting on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.

The $179 million arena will hold more than 15,000 fans for Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball and will give fans exciting new amenities throughout the arena, while the Huskers expect to provide top-notch competition on the court.

“From start to finish, our home schedule is going to challenge us and hopefully provide us the experience necessary to prepare for the postseason,” Yori said. “UCLA will test us right away and our team will be working hard to prepare for that first game. By the time we close our home regular-season schedule for Jordan Hooper’s Senior Night on Feb. 27, we will play 11 postseason tournament teams at home. That is a going to be a challenge.”

Overall, Nebraska will play at least 18 games against 2013 postseason squads, including at least 12 games against NCAA Tournament teams. Eleven of those 12 games will come against teams that advanced to the NCAA second round. The first of those 2013 NCAA second-round foes comes with UCLA on Friday, Nov. 8. The special noon tip time will be part of a historic day of basketball in the state of Nebraska, as the Husker men will face 2013 NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier Florida Gulf Coast later that evening.

The women’s game will include a special “Invest 2 Be the Best” life skills pep rally for middle school youth from Lincoln and surrounding communities. The pep rally and Nebraska’s record-setting season ticket sales promise record crowds for the men’s and women’s games.

“The excitement around basketball in the city of Lincoln and the state of Nebraska is probably at an all-time high right now, and we hope we can keep that growing,” Yori said. “The really exciting part about it is that we haven’t even played a game yet in the arena.”

Nebraska’s game with UCLA will follow a pair of exhibition games against Pittsburg State and Nebraska-Kearney (Nov. 3). The tickets for both of those exhibition games are included in the 20-game season ticket packages available through the Husker Athletic Ticket Office at Huskers.com/arena or 1-800-8-BIG-RED. NU fans can visit Huskers.com/arena and place a $25 deposit while selecting their seat for the upcoming season. A record number of season tickets (approximately 2,800) have been sold, but great seats in the lower bowl of the arena are still available. Reserved tickets in the lower bowl are available for just $160, while season GA seats are just $80.

Along with providing great value to the families of Husker fans, Nebraska expects to put an exciting and experienced team on the court again this season. The Huskers, who have advanced to back-to-back NCAA tournaments and made five NCAA trips in the past seven seasons, return four starters from a team that finished 25-9 overall in 2012-13. The returners, led by two-time All-American and first-team All-Big Ten choice Jordan Hooper, helped the Huskers finish second in the the 2013 regular-season Big Ten standings with a 12-4 record.

Hooper, a 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., is expected to challenge Nebraska career records for points, rebounds and three-pointers during her senior season. She will be joined for the third straight year in NU’s starting five by junior forwards Emily Cady and Hailie Sample. Sophomore point guard Rachel Theriot, who earned Big Ten All-Freshman honors a year ago, also returns to the starting lineup. Juniors Tear’a Laudermill and Brandi Jeffery bring more experience to the Husker backcourt, along with sophomore Sadie Murren, while junior Katie Simon bolsters an experienced front line. Allie Havers, a 6-5 freshman center, is hoping to help the Huskers inside, while freshmen guards Hannah Tvrdy and Esther Ramacieri provide depth in the backcourt.

Following the historic opener against UCLA, the Huskers conclude a two-game season-opening home stand against Alabama onMonday, Nov. 11. NU will hit the road for the first time when they battle 2013 WNIT runner-up Utah in Salt Lake City on Nov. 15.

After the road trip to Utah, the Huskers return to Pinnacle Bank Arena for a four-game home stretch that begins with Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday, Nov. 21 and concludes with a clash against NU’s second Pac-12 foe of the year, Washington State. The Huskers will face an up-and-coming Cougar club that returns 12 letterwinners and three starters on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Nebraska’s second non-conference road trip will feature traditional ACC power North Carolina in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge onThursday, Dec. 5 in Chapel Hill, N.C. UNC returns eight players, including two starters from a 2012-13 squad that finished 29-7 and advanced to the NCAA second round.

The Huskers then return to Lincoln for their longest home stretch since Yori’s first season at NU in 2002-03. The five-game home stand includes four non-conference foes that all advanced to the postseason in 2013, beginning with Utah State (Dec. 8), which went 18-14 overall, including 14-4 with a runner-up WAC finish last season. The stretch continues with 2013 NCAA second-round qualifier Creighton on Saturday, Dec. 14. Following Finals Week on campus, NU will continue the home stand against South Dakota, coached by former Husker Amy (Gusso) Williams. In Williams’ first season in 2012-13, the Coyotes won 19 games overall and finished third in the Summit League. The non-conference portion of the home stand concludes with 2013 NCAA qualifier and defending Southland Conference champion Oral Roberts on Sunday, Dec. 29.

The Huskers wrap up the five-game stand by tipping off Big Ten Conference play against Northwestern at Pinnacle Bank Arena onThursday, Jan. 2. Nebraska hits the road to face NCAA second-round qualifier Michigan State (Jan. 9), before closing the conference road swing at  2013 WNIT qualifier Illinois (Jan. 12).

NU returns home to face more postseason-caliber competition when the Huskers take on Minnesota (Jan. 16) and 2013 NCAA second-round qualifier and Big Ten Tournament champion Purdue (Jan. 19). A road game at Northwestern (Jan. 26) completes a home-and-home series with the Wildcats, before the Huskers return home to battle 2013 NCAA second-round qualifier Michigan (Jan. 29) .

Nebraska’s final two-game road trip of the season comes with Big Ten single plays at 2013 NCAA second-round qualifier Iowa (Feb. 1) and Wisconsin (Feb. 5). The Huskers are a combined 10-0 against the Hawkeyes and Badgers in NU’s first two seasons in the Big Ten.

The Huskers complete their home-and-home series with Michigan State on Sunday, Feb. 9 at Pinnacle Bank Arena, before hitting the road to complete the season series with Michigan (Feb. 13). NU then plays host to Indiana (Feb. 16) before traveling to Ohio State (Feb. 19) in its only meetings with the Hoosiers and Buckeyes in 2013-14.

Nebraska wraps up its home regular-season schedule with back-to-back battles against defending Big Ten champion Penn State (Feb. 24) and Illinois (Feb. 27). The Huskers conclude the regular season on the road at Purdue (March 2), before heading back to Indiana for the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament March 6-9.

The announcement of the NCAA Tournament field will be made on Monday, March 17, with the NCAA Women’s Final Four to be held at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., April 6-8.

Huskers Start Preparations for Wyoming

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.-  The Nebraska football team started its game one preparations for Wyoming during a two and a half practice held inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields in half pads Monday evening.

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck met with media after practice, noting that he believes the team is ready to let the team bonding begin during the season, while also talking about the transition from fall camp to game one preparations.

“I think our guys have had a really competitive fall—and physical, and I think our guys are looking forward to having an opportunity to come together and bond.” Beck said.

As for starting Wyoming preparations, Beck mentioned that the Huskers are already full speed ahead in game one preparations for the Cowboys.

“I think they (Wyoming) play really hard, and all indications is that they switched the team around, so we are preparing for everything.” Beck said, “We want to make sure our guys go out there and play fast, and play hard.”

Watch out for Wyoming’s secondary, Beck believes that the Cowboys could wreak some havoc against the Husker high octane offense.

“I think that is where more of the veteran players are, you don’t know much about some of the lineman or the linebackers.” Beck said, “They play hard.”

Today marked the first day of fall semester classes at Nebraska, and according to Coach Beck, he believes practice today was one of the best practices he has been a part of on the first day of classes.

“Actually (today) might be one of the better ‘first day of school practices’ I have ever been a part of, I have been other places and we wouldn’t have practiced today, we would have practiced yesterday.” Beck said, “It’s such a crazy day, this first day, some of our guys handled themselves pretty well.”

Nebraska will continue preparations Tuesday as the team moves closer to its season opener. NU will face Wyoming on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network. Check back here at Huskers.com for updates revolving around Husker football.

Nebraska’s game with Penn State could have conference championship implications. The Huskers battled the Lady Lions in the final regular-season home game in the history of the Devaney Center last season with a share of the Big Ten title on the line. Penn State came away with the victory to secure sole possession of the regular-season title, while Nebraska finished as the Big Ten runner-up.

The Huskers went on to advance to their second NCAA Sweet 16 in the past four years, while Penn State was one of six Big Ten Conference women’s basketball teams to advance to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Nebraska, which produced the second-most victories in school history in 2012-13 by finishing with a 25-9 overall record, returns four starters from the team that finished 12-4 in the Big Ten. Two-time first-team All-Big Ten forward Jordan Hooper headlines the list of Nebraska’s returning players. The two-time honorable-mention All-American will be a contender for national player-of-the-year honors as a senior, while challenging Nebraska’s career scoring, rebounding and three-point records.

Hooper, a 6-2 senior forward from Alliance, Neb., led the USA Basketball Women’s World University Games team to a gold medal this summer in Russia.

Junior forwards Emily Cady (Seward, Neb.) and Hailie Sample (Flower Mound, Texas) have both joined Hooper in NU’s starting five for every game each of the past two seasons. Rachel Theriot, a Big Ten All-Freshman selection last season, also returns to Nebraska’s starting lineup. Juniors Tear’a Laudermill (Riverside, Calif.), Brandi Jeffery (Vacherie, La.) and Katie Simon (Roseville, Calif.) all add experience, along with sophomore Sadie Murren (Colon, Neb.) for reigning Big Ten Coach-of-the-Year Connie Yori’s squad.

Freshmen Allie Havers (Paw Paw, Mich.), Hannah Tvrdy (Seward, Neb.) and Esther Ramacieri (Repentigny, Quebec) add new faces to the 2013-14 Husker roster.

Penn State finished with a 26-6 overall record that included a 14-2 Big Ten mark last season. The Lady Lions will be led by returning Big Ten Player-of-the-Year Maggie Lucas. She will be joined by seniors Dara Taylor, Ariel Edwards and Talia East.

Fans can reserve their spots and select their seats for season tickets right now by visiting Huskers.com/arena. The Nebraska women’s basketball team will play 18 regular-season home games and a pair of exhibition games at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Season ticket prices are just $160 for the lower bowl of the arena.

Huskers’ Pelini Expecting Wyoming to Test Defense

Nebraska-Cornhuskers-Football-Blackshirts-HelmetsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Bo Pelini expects Wyoming’s spread offense to offer a good test for the 18th-ranked Cornhuskers’ young defense on Saturday night.

Wyoming third-year starting quarterback Brett Smith is one of the nation’s top returning passers. He averaged 308 yards in total offense and threw 27 touchdown passes against six interceptions last season.

Two years ago, Smith threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-14 loss to ninth-ranked Nebraska in Laramie, Wyo.

The Huskers’ biggest question marks are on the line and at linebacker. Coaches plan to rotate players in and out.

Huskers Come Alive in Second Half to Down Bearcats

huskersoccerLincoln – The Nebraska soccer team, which moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2005, used three goals in a 15-minute span to take control of the match and defeat the Cincinnati Bearcats by a 4-1 margin on a warm Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

The Huskers fell behind early, as Cincinnati struck first at the 12:59 mark of the first half when Mackenzie Grause picked up a favorable bounce off a deflection and beat NU goalkeeper Emma Stevens one-on-one from the top of the box. That would be the only goal Stevens allowed, as Nebraska allowed only two shots on goal in posting the victory.

Nebraska fired 14 shots in the first half, including five on goal but were unable to enter the scoring column. The Huskers would continue to put pressure on Cincinnati (0-2) in the second half. NU got its offense rolling in the 54th minute when senior Stacy Bartels received a through ball pass from Caroline Flynn to score from 12 yards out, knotting up the contest at 1-1.

Nine minutes later, freshman Sydney Miramontez earned her first career goal as a Husker after settling a cross from Jaycie Johnson to give NU its first lead of the match with 62:28 on the clock.

Johnson, who had a hand in two of NU’s four second half goals, made it three goals in 15 minutes for the Huskers when she was awarded a penalty shot after a mistimed tackle by the Bearcat defender. Johnson beat Cincinnati goalkeeper Kristina Utley to the left side giving NU a 3-1 advantage with 22 minutes remaining. The goal was Johnson’s third of the year in just her second collegiate match.

In the 86th minute of action, Katie Kraeutner helped finish off the scoring with a nicely-executed deep crossing pass from the left side to Sam Areman, who headed the ball in from close range for the 4-1 lead.

Nebraska recorded 30 shot attempts and 14 shots on goal for the second consecutive match, while the Bearcats had 11 shots, but just two on goal.  Seven different Huskers recorded shots on goal in the contest, including Jordan Jackson who led with six, while Johnson posted three on net.

John Walker’s squad will hit the road starting next weekend with a match-up against BYU, an Elite Eight qualifier from 2012. The Huskers and Cougars will meet at 8 p.m. (Central) on Saturday, Aug. 31 in Provo.

Huskers Battle Alumni in Devaney Center Debut

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLincoln, Neb. – The 10th-ranked Nebraska volleyball team held its annual Red/White Match on Saturday evening at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in front of a sellout crowd of 8,243 fans. The Nebraska alumni team, led by Olympians Jordan Larson and Nancy Metcalf, took the match 2-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-22) on the historic night at the Devaney.

Kelsey Fien and Morgan Broekhuis led the Huskers on the night with 12 kills each. Broekhuis tallied a .357 hitting percentage, while Fien notched a clip of .280. Husker setters Kelly Hunter and Mary Pollmiller both saw playing time during the match, with Pollmiller notching 24 assists and Hunter with seven assists. Justine Wong-Orantes had 12 digs.

The Huskers started the match fighting point-for-point with the alumni. A kill by Broekhuis gave NU the lead at 5-4, but the alumni would come back to take a 15-9 lead after a kill by Metcalf and a hitting error by the Huskers. A kill by Fien would cut the alumni lead to 17-13, but it would not be enough as they would go on to take the first set 25-19.

Fien led the Huskers in the first set with five kills, while Pollmiller tallied five assists and Hunter had four assists. The Huskers also notched 11 team digs and two team blocks.

NU came out to a 5-3 lead in the second set on a kill by Amber Rolfzen. Nebraska went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a kill by Broekhuis to extend its lead to 14-8. The Huskers then strung together another 5-0 run to make it 21-12. NU would go on to win the second set 25-17 and even the match at one set apiece.

Meghan Haggerty and Broekhuis each had four kills in the second set, while Fien notched three. Pollmiller paced the offense with 11 assists. The Huskers recorded a .344 team hitting percentage of the set.

Nebraska opened the third set down 6-2 on a hitting error, but came back to cut it as close as 12-10 on a kill by Fien. The Huskers then cut it 17-16 on a kill by Ostrander, but the alumni pulled ahead 23-18 and went on to take the third set 25-22.

Haggerty and Broekhuis both had four kills in the third set, while Pollmiller tallied 11 assists. Nebraska posted 15 team digs and three team blocks in the set.

The Huskers open the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Billiken Invitational hosted by the University of Saint Louis. Nebraska will face Louisiana-Monroe on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and will take on Auburn on Saturday at 10 a.m., before a match-up with Saint Louis at 7 p.m.

Seven Husker Walk-Ons Earn Scholarships

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.-Nebraska wrapped up preseason camp on Saturday morning with a light workout inside Memorial Stadium. The Huskers practiced in helmets and shorts, wrapping up three weeks of intense work, as Nebraska now turns its attention to game preparation with the season opener with Wyoming a week away.

Following Saturday’s practice, Head Coach Bo Pelini announced that seven Husker players who originally joined the program as walk-ons will be on scholarship for the 2013 season.

The group includes three 2013 seniors who were on scholarship during the spring semester and will remain on scholarship for their final season as Huskers. That trio includes quarterback Ron Kellogg III, tight end Jake Long and safety Wil Richards.

Kellogg III served as Nebraska’s No. 2 quarterback last season and is a prime candidate for that role again this fall. Long was part of Nebraska’s regular rotation at tight end the past two seasons and is the likely starter at the position in 2013. Jake Long joins his twin brother, Spencer, as walk-ons who have went on to earn a scholarship as Spencer Long received the honor last fall. Richards has been a key member of the Nebraska special teams the past two years.

Four additional Huskers have been placed on scholarship for the first time including senior defensive tackle Brodrick Nickens, senior linebacker Colby Starkebaum, junior center Mark Pelini and sophomore fullback Andy Janovich.

Nickens made the move from offensive line to defensive tackle in the spring, and is in line for playing time this fall. Starkebaum is a second-generation Husker, following in the footsteps of his father, John, who lettered for NU from 1972-74. The younger Starkebaum has been a reserve linebacker and key scout team performer throughout his career.

Pelini is in a battle for the starting center position after serving as the backup at the spot last season. Janovich played as a true freshman at fullback last season and is expected to share playing time with the top unit at that spot in 2013. Janovich earned a scholarship in just his second season in the program, the quickest any player has moved from walk-on to scholarship under Pelini.

Overall, the group of new scholarship recipients includes four native Nebraskans in Kellogg, Long, Janovich and Nickens. Richards joined the NU program from Lee’s Summit, Mo., Pelini is a Youngstown, Ohio native, while Starkebaum joined the NU program from Sterling, Colo.

Saturday’s announcement continues a long Husker tradition of walk-ons earning scholarships during their career at Nebraska. In fact, Pelini has now placed 26 former walk-ons on scholarship during his six seasons as Nebraska’s head coach.

When asked if this was one of his favorite parts of the job, Pelini quickly responded affirmatively.

“Absolutely, they put in such hard work and obviously they don’t have all the luxuries or the advantages being on scholarship financially, and obviously they are on the football team and have the same requirements as kids on scholarship.” Pelini said, “That’s what makes this program special and different, the walk-on tradition continues and it will continue forever.”

Pelini took a wait and see approach on where he thinks the team is at going into game week, saying, “Well we will find next week, I like our camp, I think we got a lot done and a lot accomplished.”

Pelini also noted that incoming freshman linebacker Marcus Newby is on campus and will join the football team next week. Newby was a top 150 prospect according to multiple recruiting services and joins a young NU linebacker corps.

Nebraska will return to the practice field on Monday afternoon as the Huskers get ready for their prime-time matchup with Wyoming next Saturday. Monday will also mark the first day of the fall semester on the UNL campus.
